And I think I’m an unique case in people with cochlear implants in that I actually enjoy music. by Kyle McCann't on Aug 19, 2011 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Market Days was an absolute blast

This year it coincided with my better half’s birthday. Saturday we played Lisa Frank Beer Pong (which is exactly what it sounds like…a bunch of queers making a frat game as faggy as humanly possible). My roommate and I dominated. One of my girlfriends was questioning how I could be so good at Beer Pong…one of my friends said, and I quote: “Duh. He went to Iowa.”

The festival was fun, but we only went on Sunday because of the shitty weather on Saturday. It was nice, but it was incredibly packed. The highlight was definitely Lisa Lisa (I know, from Carmina Burana to Lisa Lisa…).

I do need to get out more. I haven’t been out of the state in more than two years.

That is a tough question about getting Directv

I was a Directv owner for 7 years. I cancelled my subscription because we moved and we are temporarily in an apartment.

The Sunday Ticket is good, but only if you are determined to watch all season long, if you don’t then every Sunday where you are not watching 3 to 5 games you think to yourself that you spent all this money for games you are not watching.

Directv’s customer service is for shit. They suck and Directv raises their prices every six months to a year.

So with that, think about it before you make the decision.

Let me tell you a little something about Uverse.

I signed up for it tonight and it will be 2 1/2 weeks until my appointment. I have to cancel my Time Warner by Thursday or be locked in for a year. For those playing along at home that means 2 weeks w/o cable or internet. HUH!?!? Not okay.

Oh and did I mention that the guy offered me an additional $50 promo card b/c the wait is so long but my chat got cut off b/4 it was put on my account? Yeah, that happened.

No, that is actually the good thing.

The plan I chose is $43 off/month for the first 6 months and you can cancel at any time. I also get 3 months of HBO/Skinamax for free which I can cancel at any time. Plus a $100 promo card. It is a good deal. Overall it is about $200 cheaper for the year than TW and if there is a better deal after 6 months I can get that. TW doesn’t let you do that.

Many Scorcese films may be over-rated,

But few of his films that I’ve seen have sucked. Goodfellas is good-to-great, but it does drag a bit when it becomes only about Liotta and DeNiro.

Casino and the Departed are decent, maybe not awesome. Gangs of NY would have been better as two movies, but I still like it I like the Aviator. Taxi Driver was interesting but too slow for me (partly because I’m only 30 years old), and I don’t think I’ve seen his other stuff.

Being in Omaha, he is disappointed that das Huskers get so much media coverage both in Omaha and Lincoln. He would like to read about the Hawkeyes, I guess, every day, even if there’s nothing truly interesting-even if he doesn’t learn anything.

I suggested the East Iowa papers and even DMR, but he said, a) the DMR thinks they’re a state-wide paper so they don’t focus on Iowa any more than anyone else, and b) the East Iowa papers (I guess generally lumped together) don’t really have that great of writing on a consistent basis.

I find all I need to know here, so I have never searched diligently. Apparently, he doesn’t want to wait for INPIYL2I every day and would just rather search/browse himself. Can the BHGP community help out and give me some good links to papers and/or blogs and/or whatever else he should go to?

Thank you.

Far be it from me to question 3-time Coach of the Year Andy Reid

But was it really such a great move to trade Kolb for a nickel back? I mean they’re not even going to start Rodgers-Cromartie. The 2nd rd pick is whatever. Also, they went out and gave Vince Young like $5million (which he quickly rewarded them by calling the Eagles the Dream Team and multiplying the hate and expectations by 100) to be their back-up. Am I just overthinking this? To me it’s a stupid move.

Twitter

by jebushchrist on Aug 20, 2011 4:12 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think it was necessarily an "upgrade in talent" move.

More that they knew it unlikely they would re-sign him next year unless Vick got hurt, and they wanted to get something for him. I also think a 2nd round pick from the Cardinals is pretty good. The best values in football (at least pre-CBA) was in the 20s and 30s and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s where the Cardinals end up. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rodgers-Cromartie ends up with near the same snaps as Samuel. DRC is also 24 while the two other corners are 30.

I think it is sorta dumb because I don’t think Vick will be near as good as he was last year, and they’ll miss Kolb. But if you (as the Eagles are) are convinced that Vick is legitimate and that Kolb will bolt after this year, I think it makes some sense. Still not a great trade, but decent. In their mind, I’m sure they’re thinking they got a great Nickel guy and a 2nd rounder only for a “slight” downgrade in a back-up (in their mind, not mine) QB and a couple million dollars. If they see it as that, meh. But I do disagree with them in their premise.

by tyger1147 on Aug 20, 2011 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Vick is going to be a little like Favre with Minnesota

From treasure to trash. The book is out on this guy, as it was with Atlanta. He’ll be a good fantasy player but I don’t see him leading a team.

And I thought Kolb was locked up for a few more years under contract with the Eagles… if not the trade makes a little more sense but I still don’t see letting a “+” QB go for a nickel back and a future pick.

Kola is unproven.

Philly probably realizes they are close enough to a super bowl appearance that they can gamble a bit on backups if it means locking down the opponents’ passing game.

The part I don’t like is that they brought in VY. They probably have Vick at the point where he won’t embarrass them off the field, only to bring in a guy who showed a possible suicidal mind frame in Nashville. What happens if VY is forced to start and has a couple bad games?

Then again, my Niners have Alex Smith, Kaepernick, and some guy who never even played a full season at Sacramento State, so who am I to judge?

But, yes, hopefully Tottenham or Arsenal can steal some points off ’em.

Gervinho will have to be on point for the Gunners to take points from ManU.

Losing that kid to a second yellow today is going to hurt, especially if Nasri is shipped to ManCity by next week.

by The Mexican't on Aug 20, 2011 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Gervinho is still suspended.

Van Persie needs to remember that he’s very good. I’m more concerned about the bare bones backline and midfield that they’ll be fielding. But, hell, Man U beat them in the FA Cup last year with a lineup of kids, so…

Unless Wenger actually spends some moneHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Sorry, I briefly lost my mind there.

They've been a feeder team for all of Europe since Wenger got there.

Outside of Bergkamp (who took paycuts out of his love for Arsenal) they’ve sold almost every top-flight player they’ve had over the last 13 years. They’ve done it to invest in younger talent but apparently all the young talent they invest in is made of glass.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Aug 20, 2011 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

The idea of investing in young talent is brilliant.

Except that the kids don’t seem to respect the club enough to play out their primes at Arsenal.

by The Mexican't on Aug 20, 2011 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Playing out their primes has never been the plan.

They’ve never tried to “invest” so much as use Wenger’s scouting talents (which is unrivaled in all of Europe, I will fight you to the death on this) and raise the profile of the kid enough to sell him for a song after just a few years. In theory, even with only a few years, the talent is so good it should still translate into wins. However, think about all the time over the past few seasons where Van Persie, Fabergas, Thomas Rosicky, et.al have been injured. They certainly suffer from putting all their eggs in one basket.

They're striking while the iron is hot on Cesc and Nasri.

Stadium debts are a bitch, though. If Emirates is really what’s killing Wenger’s budget, then I hope that Liverpool’s new owners just commit to Anfield and write off thoughts of a new stadium.

by The Mexican't on Aug 20, 2011 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Disagree.

The blew it with Fabergas. Last season was the year; Barca would have killed for him and he wanted to go. They held out hoping to get more and he ended up having the worst year of his career since his first season. They still made a ton off of him but it would have been more a year ago.

I'm still not that impressed by Carroll.

Big guy, but… eh.

Also, between Suarez, Kuyt, and Meireles, there are some ugly bastards on that team.

Carroll's "goal" last week was great.

I think he’s looked a bit lost because they’ve had to play boom ball. Once he gets some help up top he should net 10+

Without Gerrard running the midfield, Suarez is the only real shot Liverpool has at holding the ball up top.

Rob is so scary

That I’m convinced he really is just Rex in disguise. No one man can be all that scary.

It could be Rex in a fright wig.

Although the J-E-T-S are playing right now, so that would be some trick…

Rambler

Do you have a good website for searching Civil War unit rosters. My great aunt just sent my mom a story about 4 of my great, great, great uncles who were at Shiloh. She didn’t know what unit they were in.

How bad is it when Shonn Greene is my backup #1 pick

I have the same fashion sense as Tom Arnold.

Anyone have a good dictionary or source for Colonial-era English vernacular?

I've seen the beginning

I turned it off because I had to go somewhere and never ended up watching the rest. Looked interesting though. I should get back to it sometime.

Man, I hope those Ole Miss players are better guests

than the Hoyas were in China.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

SYLLABUS WEEK!!!

and, these comments are ridiculous. someone want to give me the abbreviated version? I’m very curious about the uniforms up there

and that's another Hawkeye first down... EHAWW!!

From a strictly culinary standpoint

the above comments would indicate comediennes are savory, just not palatable.

The two things from today

going to Menard’s is always a scavenger hunt, I love seeing what they’ll give me for free, and damn I hate Mariokart Wii compared to DS
