Click this subject line to minimize if you don't want to read about the Civil War. This is really just for Lycurgus anyway.

Continued from prior thread because this is what Hamsterdam is for.

All in all, there were and always will be some rational folks down there. The secessionists were in the minority all through the Mid-South and even in some parts of the Deep South (And of the original Deep South states who first seceded, many had incredibly fraudulent, On The Waterfront-style votes, Georgia especially) until the CSA government attacked Sumter because they knew that that was their only way to get Tennessee, North Carolina, and, most importantly, Virginia to their sides. It was a risk, but a calculated one, and it worked for them in the short term.

Here’s some virtual graveyard created a descendant of Deep South bluecoats.

And, here, this is for you. A quote from Governor Pickens of South Carolina, one month before Lincoln was inaugurated. This was after the Southerners seized many Federal installations (Check the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion for more details) the South Carolinians fired upon the Star of the West (Anderson did not return fire) and after the South Carolinians accidentally fired upon Fort Sumter (Anderson did not return fire and the greycoats formally apologized for the incident), so on and so forth. Man, I really had Mike in that disjointed debate, I just didn’t know it. Civil War Talk has been great for my learning, and I want to thank the gentlemen who have taken the time to post so many choice pre-war letters from the Official Records.

If peace can be secured, it will be by the prompt use of the occasion, when the forces of the United States are withheld from our harbor. If war can be averted, it will be by making the capture of Fort Sumter a fact accomplished during the continuance of the present administration, and leaving to the incoming administration the question of an open declaration of war. Such a declaration, separated, as it will be, from any present act of hostilities during Mr. Lincoln’s administration, may become to him a matter requiring consideration. That consideration will not be expected of him, if the attack on the fort is made during his administration, and becomes, therefore, as to him, an act of present hostility. Mr. Buchanan cannot resist, because he has not the power. Mr. Lincoln may not attack, because the cause of the quarrel will have been, or may be, considered by him as past.

But Lincoln totally started it, dude!

I especially enjoyed the part where the Twins announcer bitched for the entire at bat

about how the national media spooged all over themselves to cover Jeter’s 3000th hit and you don’t hear a peep about Thome’s 600th hr, which is a much more rare feat. You know that several producers at ESPN were sitting there with pissed off looks on their face just glad that no one is actually watching baseball right now.

It does clear some of the logjam out of the outfield.

With Morneau back and Mauer dabbling at first, you have to have somewhere to put Cuddyer, too. 5 outfielders isn’t ideal.

To be honest, I was a fan of trading him before the deadline and rolling the dice on Span and Kubel’s health.

by MNWildcat on Aug 15, 2011 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Or Revere Span Cuddyer.

Revere doesn’t have the arm to consistently play CF. Twins might have to deal with Plouffe, Revere, Kubel OF for a while if Cuddy continues to have neck problems and Span suffers from Sidney Crosby Syndrome.

George Brett Shit His Pants (my fantasy baseball team) just got a sneaky good deal in picking up Justin Morneau from free agency. Also, GBSHP has been streaking lately from 9th (last place) all the way to 3rd.

Terrible deal. For that, just release him after the season.

That said, I’m thrilled I don’t have to watch him try and play left field anymore. What a butcher.

he wants more than any non-QB (and maybe DE) before ending his holdout.

Once you get high enough in Coach Confidence, you can change the play and get some more passes on stupid times to run.

I can just see KOK on the sideline “Hmm… 3rd and long with 1 minute left in the game, down by a TD with 60 yards to go. HB Power O”

I had the same problem.

What I did to over come that problem, was get my QB up in coach trust (or whatever the fuck they call it) to the point where I could audible to a pass play. My poor running back rarely got the ball as I was intent on setting new records for passing yds and passing TD’s. My TE loved it as they set receiving yds records for Iowa and the NCAA.

Anywho, that is how you can overcome that.

The same goes for RB’s get to the point of where you can choose the play or another thing you can do is once a play is called that you like (run vs pass) then just do a no huddle and keep runnig the play.

What do you think about this?

I am teaching a class centered on a departmental seminar this semester and I need to come up with assignments. It is a one credit hour class that is also writing intensive (witness the ridiculousness of TTU). We meet each wednesday when an invited guest speaker gives a professional scientific talk. My thoughts are the following:

Each week at the beginning of class, two well crafted questions based on the speakers papers, website, and/or talk title are to be turned into me. (3 pts each)

Each week the student is to write a 750 word essay discussing some aspect (concept in discussion, method, etc.) of the talk. During the first three weeks these essays will graded leniently and feedback will be given. After the third week any spelling, grammatical, and structural errors will be cause for lost points. (15 pts each)

Twice during the semester the students will submit a 3-5 page paper describing a study from a scientific paper, critiquing the study, and describing a follow-up study that could test assertions made in the discussion of the original paper. This assignment will be critiqued, returned to the student, revised, and resubmitted as a final draft. (45 pts each: rough draft = 15 pts, final draft = 30 pts.)

What do you guys think?

It is a departmental seminar, so I don’t need to line up the speakers. They have been invited by the department.

I am also going to outlaw laptops in the seminar. I wouldn’t have a problem in a lecture setting, but these seminars are professional settings and it doesn’t look good for a speaker to look up and see the backs of computer screens.

not the gophers. They couldn’t afford a new football stadium, and nobody really cared. So they ended up in the dumpty dome.

Had they had an on-campus stadium that team would be immensely more popular right now.

In 10 years they’ll be on their way to the type of program that the only D1 school in a fairly sizable state with a pretty solid base of in-state football recruits every year should be. Minnesota is to football what Iowa is to basketball, lots of good in-state recruits populating other schools rosters.

A lot depends on the Vikings. If they stick around they’ll be like Rutgers, if they have a good season, everybody will be fans. If not, nobody will care.

I don't think

NFL teams care much at where they went to college. They’re looking for talent. Iowa apparently has a good rep for preparing guys in a professional way and those players not being knuckleheads, but that’s just a small part of it.

Everybody should have known that Sanders would be injury prone, he’s a smallish guy who flys around like a madman. They don’t last.

He was asked what guys in the Hall think about juicers being admitted and he said they are all against it. Asked if that would allow people w/ stats that aren’t as good in he said the juicer’s stats don’t count b/c they are inflated so the guys that didn’t juice are even more deserving.

but people aren’t looking at this stuff that way anymore. It’s a perversion of womens lib that has been counterproductive. Slowly, things are moving the way of Idiocracy, where guys only worth is their MURDERDEATHKILL in whatever form that takes, and girls seem to only be worth SEXSEXSEX. And parents are teaching this to kids in myriad ways, but the kids are mopping it up and using it to (what they seem to see as) their advantage.
Meanwhile, the fat, ugly, old guard Masters Of The Universe light cigars with $100 bills (metaphorically, just for a change of pace) that they “earned” by exploiting everyone else.

It worked for her. What is the last race Danica won? What’s the last commercial you saw her in? Since I already know the answer, I’ll mention that in today’s business environment she is ripe for more adverts as a result of you knowing about her previous one. Regardless of how she got there, it made her money, and she’s in line for even more money just by being in one (or several) of those stupid, whorish commercials.

There was the recent one that involved one of the coaches and there was one from a few years ago which is described above. It’s a pattern of behavior among our program. My friend who used to be in the program said that there was an unspoken competition to see who could show up to suit and tie events with the most backwoods get-up. They would literally wear Carhartts to black tie dinners.

It’s an attitude thing, not a home state thing.

It’s never enough. You want more and more and more and more and you’re not satisfied with anything. You want more domination, more pins, more scoring, more offense, more crying opponents, more Minnesotans who are literally panting like a dog while being TFed by one of your wrestlers (Poor Matt Mincey), more 42-3 scores against Ohio State, more wins.

Wins. Fight. Try. Intense. Go. I’m not serious with a lot of this, but I am deadly serious about one thing: the nature of this sport, for me, is such that I wouldn’t be satisfied with anything except pure perfection. I love it. I absolutely love it. It’s remarkably addicting, more-so than even football, my first love.

Gable, Brands (Obvious desire to win), and Sanderson (Quiet desire to win) may seem like madmen to some. I am not part of that “some”, no, sir.

I will say that I enjoy having another rival added to the Big Ten pot at Penn State but that absolutely does not mean that I have one single ounce of respect for Cael Sanderson.

Yeah, I could tell.

I don’t really care.

but that absolutely does not mean that I have one single ounce of respect for Cael Sanderson.

He has to earn respect from opposing fans (I, for instance, have much respect for Brands and much, much more than simple respect for Dan the Man). And I think he’s going to. But hatred is hatred, and I won’t clamor for respect. You do what feels right, no matter what. That’s what makes it fun.

Not as bad as they Raiders.

Instead of deferring they told the refs that they “wanted to kick off” so they kicked off and then the cards chose to receive the next half. So the Raiders kicked off twice.
