Hamsterdam Has Mini-Madness

Well, that got rather chatty last night.  (You can still access last night's H'dam post through that link or through the Archives link up top; the only reason I took it off the front page was to avoid having it shove other posts farther down the front page.)

So here's your new Hamsterdam post for the weekend.  There's soccer galore (EPL, Real Madrid v. Barcelona tomorrow), preseason NFL, baseball, and whatever else you care to watch.  The rules are here; play nice.

Who do people pull for in the EPL?

I need to get into following the league, but have no dog in the fight. Who’s the most Iowa of EPL squads?

Yeah, Fulham's been the US "foster" team for a while now.

Carlos Bocanegra started the trend and Dempsey’s been there for a while. McBride finished his EPL career there as well.

I'm in the same boat. Love Dempsey...

But in my fandom, I need people to root against as much as people to root for. Thus, I need a team and need to know that I can hate everyone else.

Well, Fulham is a London team

so you can hate Arsenal, Tottenham, QPR and pretty much anyone else from the capital. However, I think their traditional rival is Millwall (known for having the most vile fans in England) who haven’t been in the top flight since Teddy Sheringham had his final hurrah.

I’d like to have one club team that I pull for. One of my friends is a fan of Liverpool though

by iowaChemE on Aug 13, 2011 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Go outside of the Big 6 (Man U., Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham).

Fulham is always a good choice. Or you could adopt a newly-promoted team and really root for the underdog. Queens Park Rangers haven’t been in the Premiership for nearly 25 years so they’d be a fun pick, especially since they were a stalwart of the top for a generation. Just don’t pick a team from the Midlands. Seriously, just fuck that place.

In fairness, it's really the West Midlands that suck.

The East Midlands fit in more with the demographics of Southern England. Plus, Nottingham Forrest is there (smallest club to have ever won a major European trophy).

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Aug 13, 2011 9:34 AM CDT up reply actions

I definitely want to stay out of the Big 6

I’m thinking a club that won’t have to really worry about being relegated, but is also not a douchey big 6 club

by iowaChemE on Aug 13, 2011 9:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, consider this:

if you don’t fall in that top group you essentially have no shot at the league. Believe it or not, the relegation battle can be just as thrilling as the championship. There have been many a stunning escape made in the final game(s) of the season that make for truly compelling drama.

I’m going to go with Everton. They seem like they could challenge for a top spot. And I agree, watching teams last year try to avoid relegation was intense, but Everton does have Howard and had Donovan a couple years ago so for now, I’m gonna stick with them

I don't really have a fave,

So I’ll just try to characterize some of the teams:

Man U is kind of like the Yankees, maybe with a bit less history, so I guess that makes Man City kind of like the Mets without any world series titles.

Liverpool is like the Red Sox, only with more success.

Newcastle United are a bit like the Raiders.

Chelsea is like the Cowboys if they hand done all their high level success in the last ten or twelve years.

Arsenal is kind of like the Oakland Athletics if they had won some recent world series titles.

Tottenham are supposed to have funny, dedicated fans, but haven’t won big in quite awhile. Maybe like a more successful version of the Cleveland Browns.

Everton has USA goalkeeper Tim Howard, so I kind of want them to do well.

We will become more intensity!!! --What Reading Rambler thinks Tom Brands should do.

Good morning Chazz.

One request: my computer is officially a piece of shit, so please keep pics & gifs to a minimum today because I’d really like to hand around for a while.

And, no, Chelsea is not like the Cowboys. If anything, Man U. is closer to that description if anything because they’re more of a Pan-English team. Man City, on the other hand, has arguably fiercer loyalty within the city of Manchester proper.

However, your description of my Gunners is just about perfect.

here is the linky and the paragraph for the logo
Known as Omini, is a silhouette of a man (left) and woman (right) sitting back to back in the nude. It was created in 1969 by mere accident. After a photo shoot for a bathing suit advertisement, a man and a woman were sitting back-to-back, naked, with the outlines of their bodies traced by the back lighting. The photographers knew they had something, and the idea grew into what is now the logo for Robe di Kappa, or the Kappa brand, which was later attributed to the active and sportswear. Symbolizes the mutual support between man and woman, and their completion

The SEC is an entirely national league in terms of their television contracts: ESPN & CBS. They’re the closest thing college football has to a “pro league” in terms of universal appeal. They could give two shits about St. Louis because they’re already on there.

I'm not even counting ESPN

I’m counting the best winning percentage in the modern era of football against the likes of equally impressive Nebraska, Texas and Arkansas (remember when they were great? The 70’s do). I’m counting National Championships in five different decades since the end of the war. There isn’t a cluster of Oklahoma success the way there is at many “great” programs, the success is pretty much constant.

You’re putting waaaay too much stock in recent history. LSU was one of the country’s most middling teams since 1960 until the time Nick Saban arrived. Fuck, Gerry DiNardo was their coach not long ago. Florida is clearly an elite if not THE elite CFB program right now, but we’re talking very modern history relatively speaking. And even Tennessee (I shouldn’t have thrown that out there) has not place amongst the other schools on the list. Even Penn State’s place on the list is well behind OU.

Clearly we’re not going to agree here but I feel like I’ve made a pretty strong argument.

I agree

you have made a strong case for OU, but when you say to look at the the total package, not just the past not just the present, but everything, ND is, in my opinion, the best program.

If it wasn’t for ND, college football would not be what it is today. They haven’t been that dominant program in the last 10 to 15 years but they have the history.
ND put college football on the forefront of American athletics, before them there was baseball, boxing and horse racing.

I guess that our definitions of prestigious are different

I don’t look at just championships. I like to look at several factors. Also it is hard for me to pick them as one of the elite when they have a history of being a dirty program in the 80’s. I remember them being hit pretty hard by the NCAA for some pretty serious violations.

Remember, OU was dealt pretty stiff penalties in the 80’s for major violations. Programs that have that kind of problems, can’t be the most elite.

That's pretty much true of any major city, however

If you look at the major U.S. metropolitan areas (off the top of my head: NYC, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston; hell, even Cleveland, Detroit, San Francisco, Miami, Pittsburgh) all have always been primarily a pro town, with college football ranking way behind a number of other franchises (except in the case of LA, who will only root for whoever is winning right now).

by HoyaGoon on Aug 14, 2011 2:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Part of this is that the colleges and universities

where college football really got huge (in the early part of the 1900s) tend not to be in the biggest cities.

Sure, some grew in or near big cities (U of Chicago, Harvard and Yale* [how good was U of Pennsylvania?] back in the day. Miami FL, UCLA, USC, Pitt, Arizona St, Georgia Tech are all in large cities. (Yes, I know Yale isn’t actually in NYC, but I’m guessing its always been pretty easy to hop a quick train to get there.)

Otherwise, it is difficult to think of very many “major football programs” in the biggest cities. Then, pro football and hoops grew and eventually settled in those cities (where baseball was already king and pro hockey had a few established markets).

I'm sure the kids say I'm not very strict.

I try to keep them in line without making them hate school and me.

When a kid makes a minor mistake, I usually politely tell them to not do it again, and I don’t always write a referral/detention on the first mistake. However, if I feel like I’ve given them too many warnings, then I’ll be a little quicker on the discipline trigger.

I try to make my classes slightly fun, and informative, but not super-difficult. My more gifted students definitely get bored, but I usually have some students with learning disabilities, so I don’t like to leave them behind, either.

Many of my students are very good kids, so while I’m definitely hitting that “possible burned out” point in my teaching career, I don’t think I should blame it on them. Now, the politics amongst the adults, that might be a good thing to blame.

In 09, Mizzou was 8-5, losing to a good Texas team (12 wins), a possibly good Nebby (10 wins), a questionable Ok St (9 wins), a bad Baylor (4 wins) and a bowl game to Navy (10 wins). They even only beat Bowling Green by 7 points, and beat Kansas (5 wins) by 2 points in KC. I’d say the Tigers lose at least 3 or 4 games in SEC play, maybe more.

In 08, they were 10-4. They scored a lot of points, but they lost to Ok State (9 wins) at home, they lost to a good Texas (12 wins), lost in KC to KU (8 wins), and lost to a good OU (12 wins) in the B12 title game. They beat a 9-wins NW in the Alamo bowl by only 7 points. They won at a 4-win Baylor by only 3 pts. I’d guess the Tigers lose two or three games in SEC play.

SEC East & West.

What gets glossed over in the whole “SEC is King” yammering is that through the cycles of competitiveness in that league, it would seem largely that one half is significantly down while the other half is way up.

When that conference began with 12 it was Bama & Terry Bowden’s sanctioned but unbeatable Auburn who were killers. Then the East sucked up pretty much all the glory for a loooong stretch while Tennessee, UF & Georgia did most of the heavy lifting. The West was bad during this stretch. I mentioned further up the thread that seemingly everyone has forgotten what a crap program LSU was from 1959-1999, especially Tigers fans.

The Big Ten’s bowl record against that league over the last decade or so is a perfect illustration of this; the top of the SEC consistently beats the top of the Big Ten while the opposite is true for the middle of the pack. The SEC isn’t nearly as deep as they’d like you to believe.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Aug 14, 2011 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

What’s amusing is the constant recalibration of the argument for SEC superiority that must be undertaken. In 2008 and 2009 when Floribama was absolutely steamrolling the conference and faced no significant opposition, it was a testament to the SEC’s dominance that these two teams were so superior (and not that the rest of the conference was a gooey candy middle). In 2007, the SEC was so “tough” that it was impossible for anyone to emerge unscathed thus it is perfectly acceptable to have a 2-loss LSU team in the title game.

We will become more intensity!!! --What Reading Rambler thinks Tom Brands should do.

by WaterlooChazz on Aug 14, 2011 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Right.

I have no doubt (well, except last year) that the SEC has had the best team the last 5 years. What is irritating is that people seemingly have a tough time wrapping their head around the idea that a team wins a championship, not a conference. Nobody was arguing how good the Pac 10 was while USC was running roughshod over everyone. People seem to forget that the same year an SEC school was winning it all, Ole Miss was losing at home to an FCS school. How is one an indication of greatness while the other isn’t an indication of feebleness?

It would stand to reason that the best team would go undefeated in any conference. That the best team has come from the same league each of the past five years is miraculous, but it’s not the pros; the former NCs don’t get to keep their players. Florida of last year wasn’t the Florida of the year before. It was popular to say Alabama was disinterested in being at the Sugar Bowl the year they got smacked around by Utah, but it seems just as firm an argument that they were a 2nd place team, not a 1B.

For those paying attention, it has actually been a steady if ever so slight decline for the SEC over the last few seasons.

I think VT knows they are pretty fortunate to be able to "dominate" the ACC.

And they only had a few “seasons of consequence” in the Big East in the late 90s.

In terms of on-field competition, I can’t say for sure how well VT does against the SEC in the future. Something tells me that SEC offenses would give them more problems (SPEED!) than they’ve dealt with in the past (outside of Miami FL and maybe FSU. VT is 8-7 against those two teams over the past decade. I think that’s slightly impressive, even though FSU hasn’t been a national power in that time, and Miami started hot and declined some).

VT is “only” 2-4 against current SEC teams over the past decade.

by WaterlooChazz on Aug 14, 2011 7:54 AM CDT up reply actions

I still don't buy this in the least.

This seems entirely like last year’s sort of over-aggressive reporter conjecture. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State would make far more sense for the SEC than Clemson or Missouri. Plus, it would allow them to shift the leagues toward having more of an emphasis on the “old” schools playing in the same division with more of the former SWCers (A&M, OK, OK St. & Arkansas) out west. The only way the SEC isn’t in talks with the Oklahomas is if those two already have assurances from the Pac 12.

Like I said to The Mexican’t on the twitters the only thing MU has in common w/ the SEC teams is that all of the schools are in what were once slave states.

Again, I’m not believing MU to the SEC until Mike Slive is announcing it or Paul Finebaum is ranting about how much better they are than Ohio State.

A&M to the SEC? Not so fast, maybe...
The official said there was a 30 to 40 percent chance that the presidents could vote against Texas A&M’s membership. He also said there was the issue of which university would become the 14th team, something many in college sports will monitor.

Also:

The SEC official said he wondered if the SEC presidents would vote for A&M only if they were assured that a team from within one of their states — Florida State, Clemson or Georgia Tech, for example — would not be added.

"I’m going to try and say, don’t bring it up now," the SEC official said. "That shouldn’t be a condition or part of the negotiation for this next issue. But it could."

So I just got done reading a bunch of game threads/post game threads over at Arrowhead Pride.

The general consensus seems to be that they were impressed with what they saw out of Stanzi last night. A lot of them think Palko gets cut, or at least should get cut. Lolz.

I’m still too scared to post there, though. Ahaha.

Hopefully Stanzi gets to play a lot more in the next game, maybe with some better guys protecting him.

Also there was this awesome pic:

Exactly. It is a radically different lifestyle/culture.

It is rare to see business open past 8 PM. Nothing is open on Sunday’s besides gas stations and boat marinas. In the time I worked at this factory. 30 people hired on, 15 fired/quit after one paycheck. It was a great place to work and very very very competitive wages compared to any other factory. People just like to collect a single paycheck and see where it takes them. It’s crazy.

by KirksGumInHaydensStas on Aug 13, 2011 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

In fairness,

I am starting to question how much companies really value hard work from their labor force.

Considering that they try to cut your health insurance, or your hours (at times), or other things.

I used to work in a kitchen at a nursing home. Money was decent, for food-service. But, there came a point where you just didn’t want to sign up for extra hours (especially on weekends) because it was a huge pain in the ass. Others would call in or show up late or hung-over.

If the workers make a habit of going above and beyond, then soon, the company or the supervisors expect it. And before you know it, you are being yelled at because you didn’t do the work of 2 people.

Sorry I pissed you off.

But I have yet to have a job with an actual organization, where I didn’t feel like I was underpaid or overworked.

Hard work is OK, as long as you get respect and maybe a small piece of the rewards. I just don’t see many companies today who give that to their “lower-level” workers.

I realize that some people think unions have over-reached. But, when you get to the point where an organization limits their hiring and assignment of hours just to keep from even having to contribute any benefits (not necessarily pay all the health insurance, but maybe some), I think that’s rather shitty.

playing around with the Super Conference stuff

a 1st attempt.

Pac12 takes Boise, BYU and the Oklahomas
Texas A&M is followed to the SEC by Texas and Missouri. TCU joins when the Big East dies.
B1G murders the Big East taking ND, Pitt, Rutgers and UConn.
The ACC rescues Cincinnati, Louisville and West Virginia from the wreckage of the Big East and takes Kansas for lulz and basketball.

Kansas St., Baylor, Iowa St., Texas Tech, Syracuse, and South Florida are no longer BCS conf schools.

Yeah, I can't see a lot of this happening.

I know Florida won’t stand for it, but how about inviting both FSU and Miami (completely locking down the state for the SEC)?

That would then allow the Big Ten to take BC if it really wanted a NE school. Also, that would be encouraging for ND. Then they can pick up Syracuse and Rutgers (or somebody else like VT, Maryland, et al) to get up to 16.

The Big East would like split up (the 16 team basketball conference) between football and non-football and join the rest of the ACC.

As for what happens west of the Mississippi, who knows? Complete CHAOS.

What I don't understand is the anti-FSU movement.

Sure, if it were a South Florida or Central Florida it would make sense. But it’s not as though Georgia, Florida and Alabama haven’t been competing against Florida State for top recruits for the better part of 3 decades. I don’t see how this would change a thing.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Aug 14, 2011 12:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Simple

Why throw your competitor a lifeline when their going down? It is because those schools already have to compete with FSU for top-level talent that they won’t bring it into the SEC, why give FSU the prestige boost?

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

by HoyaGoon on Aug 14, 2011 2:49 AM CDT up reply actions

FSU has one less MNC than Florida over the last 20 years.

They have the same number as Alabama over that span and two more than Georgia. I don’t think they need any sort of prestige boost.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Aug 14, 2011 2:56 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't necessarily disagree

but looking at it from the viewpoint of the SEC schools mentioned, there is a sense that FSU is a johnny-come-lately that is already in decline so why give the Noles an out when it is unnecessary to do so.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

by HoyaGoon on Aug 14, 2011 3:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Also,

while FSU plays Miami in conference every year, Florida can stumble against FSU in the non-conference, and still win their division or conference. UF probably says “the SEC is tough enough, why had a big rival to that minefield.”

And Georgia and Alabama can choose whether to play FSU or not. I’m sure they like that. It’s kind of like how Texas may want to play one good non-con opponent each year, but they might not want to play LSU and Arkansas every single year as part of a “tough” conference schedule.

Also, why give a nearby recruiting competitor a metric to say whether they are better than you?

The only thing that has me not buying into this

is the SEC teams seem to love the idea of their league being so tough that there’s a belief that even someone with multiple losses should be considered from the MNC. This would only solidify this belief on their part.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Aug 14, 2011 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

At this point, I'm not sure how much the addition

of TAMU, FSU, Clemson, and Mizzou really does to solidify that belief.

It would probably take about 10 Big Ten national titles in a row to knock SEC fans and the national media from the belief that SEC is the toughest/greatest in college football. And even then, the story will be “The SEC is Back This Year!”

Widmer is probably better from the tap, but could be decent in the bottle.

I like regular ShockTop (has a slight orange flavor) better than the raspberry.

On many beers, look for directions on how to pour it on the bottle. Some, you are supposed to let the bottom just stay in the bottle, some you are supposed to take the last part and swirl it a bit and then pour.

why is Florida so afraid of in state competition? Memories of being the 3rd best team still burn in their head or something?

in fact, why is the SEC itself so afraid of in state competition. Are Clemson and Georgia Tech really that scary?

They are afraid of the possibility of competition. Especially recruiting competition. They hate the idea of having to split up the south east more than 12 ways. Then they might actually not stockpile kids as well as they do now.

I forgot

that Long had at least two brushes with the law at Iowa State and was dismissed.

I was going to say that maybe they suspend him until this rape case is resolved, but if a guy makes this many mistakes, I think you have to completely dismiss him.

Not to get into a whole Cael harangue

but Long was offered a way back onto the team at ISU. It was much like the route Marion had to take at Iowa. He was supposed to attend an alcohol abuse and do other things showing a willingness to reform. Long wasn’t all that interested in doing that work and then Cael swooped in and gave the kid an easy out. In the end, it probably wasn’t in Long’s best interest to skip out on the tough work of cleaning himself up.

Im not going to call Cael dirty yet

but if Long somehow makes it back on the roster, i just might. no way does he deserve another shot, hes had alota chances.

I will say that Long’s transfer to PSU was a cynical win-at-all-costs move and to allow the kid on your team without any requirement of treatment was a mistake, made all the more clear by this incident. Long’s latest transgression just shows how ridiculous were the assertions of PSU fans that Cael only had Andrew’s best interests at heart. KJ comes out of this looking much better.

Well, if thats really Caels character

PSU doesn’t seem like the type of school who would just ignore it.

Did Iowa originally go for Long back when he was being recruited?

I’m not sure if Iowa went after Long.

This is a terrible situation. I just think if you give a kid, who assaulted a police officer, a third chance, then you need to keep a very short leash on him. As it was, Long, and his serious alcohol problem, was a ticking time bomb.

The SEC might just be waiting.

I think the Texas politicians are starting to get involved.

The SEC and Slive might not want to look like instigators.

I think the SEC

doesn’t want to get bigger than 12. Unless they have to. That’s certainly what they were saying publicly last year. If Super Conferences do happen, it will be Larry Scott of the PAC that kicks it off.

The Big 12 will probably rumble quite a bit, but nobody has a better place to go so, it should be around for awhile.

I was just thinking earlier today

that, in the off chance that A&M didn’t get an invite, things could get really bad for A&M. When you make a bold move, only to get swatted away, it really hurts your prestige.

Or, to put it another way, when you play the game of thrones conference realignment, you either win or you die.

What do you think the odds are that the PAC looks to get A&M?

someone is going to mercy kill the B12

Very likely either the SEC or Pac12 since the only team the B1G would really want to add is Texas and as long as the Big12 lives they are sitting pretty there.

It wont be the SEC

The only way the SEC or Big Ten make moves is if the Pac, ACC or Big East makes moves (or ND decides they have had a change of heart and want into the BIG). the SEC made that pretty clear.

Like what happened to MU last year?

Didn’t seem too hurt them much other than make them look like fools. If A&M was going to move they should have done it last year. Furthermore, I don’t understand why A&M has any prestige at all. Then again, I’m still pissed at the guy w/ the A&M hat who stole the ball Andruw Jones threw me at the Braves/Astros game in 1999. But I don’t really think that is clouding my judgement.

by Carfino'sWay on Aug 14, 2011 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I can't help but think A&M's attempted move was simply so much more cynical than Mizzou's

Mizzou was (and continues to be) one of the Big XII “have nots”, their desire to improve their situation was at least understandable. A&M was already one of the Big XII “haves” and was only made even more equal than the others with the new contract – remember it was A&M that has been the most strident in demanding the penalty payments from Nebraska/Colorado and the special one-time payments from the Big XII little sisters of the poor. Nothing much has really changed, Texas starting the LHN was known last summer when A&M decided to stay in the fold, and their rationale this year – the high school games – was shown to be nothing more than a pretext when the NCAA ruled the LHN wouldn’t be allowed to show the games and A&M still went ahead with leaving.

On the one hand, I can’t fault A&M for wanting to get out from under Texas’ shadow. On the other, they’ve done it in such a piss-poor fashion that they look weak, ineffectual and (worst of all from their point of view) undesirable

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

by HoyaGoon on Aug 14, 2011 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Also

all this has done is strengthen Texas’ hand. Now UT knows that A&M doesn’t have as many options as it thought it does, thus any A&M demands/threats can be given even that much less consideration.

I don't think it's over.

aTm was turned down now, but the SEC will look to them for expansion come February. The presidents just wanted to press pause so that the season doesn’t get overshadowed.

by The Mexican't on Aug 14, 2011 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe

But I’m beginning to think that Slive, much like Delany, doesn’t really want to be cause of the 16-team super conference. I think the SEC and B1G both want someone else to do the heavy-lifting on that front, then swoop in to pluck the crown jewels when it becomes inevitable.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

I think A&M thinks they are more important than they actually are

but if they were replaced by TCU or BYU, it wouldnt be a step backwards.
