Clayborn vs. Stanzi/Moeaki?

At this point, Ricky probably is QB2,

but be very skeptical of those ESPN depth charts. It seems like there are times when they don’t get updated for a long time.

Depends if Oklahoma bounces, too.

I think they can survive in this bastardized form w/o A&M if they have Texas and Oklahoma. If Oklahoma skedaddles, though…

by chitownhawkeye on Aug 12, 2011 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I actually don't think so.

Oklahoma already had the door opened for them by the Pac 10/12. Granted, this was largely contingent on Texas coming along for the ride, but if they had offered it once, I wouldn’t be stunned to see a Pac 14 with the Okies on board in the near future. Texas seems Hell bent on independence with the ACC ready to have to weather the next round of conference cannibalism.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Aug 12, 2011 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions

The Texas AD

has said that their future lies in a conference. Which could be BS, but I don’t think it is.

by chitownhawkeye on Aug 12, 2011 7:29 PM CDT up reply actions

but of course

The next few weeks could get pretty interesting. If TAMU bolts, that could lead Florida State to the SEC and trigger the one thing I don’t want, 16 team conferences.

"If you need a rah-rah speech at halftime, you’re playing the wrong sport." - Pat Angerer

by Flakbait on Aug 12, 2011 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly.

FSU leaving the ACC opens a whole can of worms. The ACC is full of new blood and old blood irritated with the state of the league (read: basketball). Their are no sacred cows in that conference at this point. Despite no legal union, I consider Duke and UNC bound at this point but after that all bets are off.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Aug 12, 2011 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions

It's not his call.

If Oklahoma and Oklahoma State get a deal and the Big East reaches out to schools like Kansas and K-State (they’ve firmly been established as a package deal by that state’s legislature) then what does Texas have left?

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Aug 12, 2011 7:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Wherever they want to go

B1G or PAC will take them in a second. So would the SEC. Texas could say “only if Iowa State comes too!” and they could STILL get into any conference.

"If you need a rah-rah speech at halftime, you’re playing the wrong sport." - Pat Angerer

by Flakbait on Aug 12, 2011 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

There's no question.

But the SEC and Big Ten won’t let Texas have their new shiny plaything (LHN) and I don’t think UT’s ready to give that up without some milage.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Aug 12, 2011 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I think they would

They wouldn’t be happy about it, but being able to add Texas road games for bball and football to the network is money. And I think Texas would change their mind when they figure out they would get more money being a part of BTN

"If you need a rah-rah speech at halftime, you’re playing the wrong sport." - Pat Angerer

by Flakbait on Aug 12, 2011 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure they would

Yes, it’s money, and lots of it, but to have a conference tv network, and letting 1 school keep their own deal doesn’t seem like something the conference presidents would agree to.

It never gets to be easy.
Why the fuck doesn't it ever get to be easy?

by chitownhawkeye on Aug 12, 2011 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

But Texas has already been down this road.

They’ve seen options that would leave them ultimately richer by jumping leagues, but they seem to prefer being more wealthy in comparison to their conference mates than those in other leagues. Their hubris is at a make-or-break stage right now; they either go it alone and enter a Notre Dame-esque golden age or they swallow their pride, abandon their sense of superiority and join a league like the SEC, Big Ten or Pac 12 on equal standing. Only the last one of those would even consider making exceptions.

I think that was the wedge ruling

The “wedge breaker” was at a higher risk of concussion. Are there that many concussion on returns for the other positions? I thought the concern was all of the unusual angles and running lanes that don’t happen on a regular play.

So here's the fun thing.

Post-A&M speculation. Let’s say Oklahoma sticks with Texas. Now you’ve got a league with Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Missouri at the top. Think about Kansas and Kansas State in this scenario. They’ve essentially got no shot at anything on the gridiron since they’ve got to play a true round robin every season. If they look East to TCU’s example of jumping clear across the country for a better opportunity…who’s going to get in their way? TCU, sure, they’re great, but after that? West Virginia? Surely K-State & Kanas have to like their chances against the likes of UConn, Pitt and Syracuse. And all of a sudden they’d both be in a league that emphasizes their sport of choice. If the Big 12 dips below 7 member schools everything falls apart.

by justsomehawkeyefan on Aug 12, 2011 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions

But they don't have a choice.

The two Kansas’ have been established as a package deal. The other side of it is this; the old guard of the Big East actually wants to get bigger because it would allow for a division of the basketball conference into old and new. The two sides would actually never meet except for in their conference tourney which is exactly what Boeheim, Thompson Jr. & Calhoun want. They’re not happy with the state of things. This would enhance the already strong brand and give everyone what they want.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Aug 12, 2011 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions

A package deal? that sucks for Kansas

it would be interesting, and im sure the Big East is really interested in it if what your saying is true.

In Fact, it could end up that the Big East just takes all the northern teams in the Big 12. including Missouri and Iowa State, because why not?

"Your spelling and grammar errors belie a seriously skilled thought process"- therealCatnuts

by justsomehawkeyefan on Aug 12, 2011 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I think they would consider Missouri

but not Iowa State. I think Iowa State, Baylor and Texas Tech would end up being likely members of the Mountain West. While a blow to their prestige and and hurdle towards automatic qualification, the three may actually benefit long-term from such a deal. Temple improved leaps and bounds after they left the Big East. Yes, it was against MAC competition but sometimes you have to experience a culture of success on any level before you’re able to rise up.

Which I don't understand. Presumably, the bowl tie-ins for a 7-team league of Texas, Oklahoma

and a pile of shit would likely resemble…a pile of shit with cotton on top. Iowa State could stand to make hay in a conference with a genuine national name (Boise, it pains me to type that) and a bunch of team that they could stand a chance of beating. Plus, they’d be expanding into rapidly growing states (Colorado, Nevada and nobody would cry to recruit in California). Their long-term health could be much better out there.

It's been established that expansion is all about football.

But what if the potential existed to land the best of the best in basketball? Duke and Carolina would be nothing short of dead weight in football, but consider that 80% of ESPN’s current basketball programming revolves around those two schools. Can you convince me there’s not wads of cash to be made from advertising in a basketball league that will almost always have UNC, Duke, Michigan State and potentially a rejuvenated Indiana in prime-time. If we’re talking a 16 team league, then those two with a Mizzou and Maryland or ND would be a coup.

The presidents wouldn't like this

they would fall all over themselves to make it a reality, especially after the AAU-decertification by Nebraska. Those two are academic powerhouses and, from a markets standpoint, North Carolina is the rare boom state outside of the West. Plus, and this has been joked about plenty but it largely rings true, if you want the NYC/NJ market you know who brings it every bit as much as Rutgers football? Duke.

about how we’re currently the only conference who really cares about “footprint” or “market” because of the BTN, and someone responded about how St. Louis already has BTN on their basic package. Is this true, and what about KC? If both cities already have it, then money wise Mizzou gains us nothing. If neither, then the market alone may make them attractive enoug

How would that breakdown work?

Like this?

Old: G’town, St Johns, Syracuse, Providence, Rutgers, UConn, Seton Hall, Villanova, WVU.

New: Pitt, Marquette, L’ville, USF, Cincy, DePaul, Notre Dame, KU, KSU.

To me, that seems very eastern-heavy for hoops, although I realize that is probably not a deciding factor in this.

And with “only” ten football teams, they would probably not have football divisions, right?

I think it really depends on who the SEC gets for their 14th member

We have to assume they’re raiding either the Big East or ACC unless they want to jump to 16, then the Big 12 is back in play (I don’t think they’d want Tech)
So they need a team, and as a result, another conference may be looking to plug a hole. Then it’s just musical chairs to see who’s sitting where when it ends

All signs are (bizarrely) pointing to Florida State.

While FSU would almost certainly welcome the move, one would think UF would do everything in their power to block it. If the ACC moves to 11, look for the exact same situation to unfold that already exists in the Big XII; their are a lot of unhappy campers in that conference on the basketball side of things who feel their brand has been debased by the emphasis on incoming football schools. There is actually a scenario that could see the Big East getting better from all of this…weird.

yeah, the rosters are nearly double

and it’s normal for teams to carry 9 or 10, so the 15 for 3 full strings of OLs is definitely there.

I wonder

how much footage the U of I has? It seems like there are plenty of hoops, football, (and obviously wrestling) from the past that you never even see highlights of, much less the entire game.

Obviously, I’d bet they have a copy of everything since 1995 or 2000, but I’d think they could make some money if they started selling DVDs or online versions (ITunes) of old stuff. I’d probably buy a 1997 Hawkeye football video from ITunes if it were offered for less than $20.

I’d forgotten all about the Slaton pin until then. God, that was brutal. Surprised there was no Hendricks-Perry… THAT was fucking epic.

The Brands, McIlravy shots were neat. I popped for the Bubba celebration.

And ending the video with that Gable shot was tremendous.

So around 437 BC

An Etruscan Kind named Tolumnius killed four Roman envoys and invaded Roman Territory prompting the Romans to designate a dictator and march to war. During the battle a cavalry officer named Aulus Cornelius Cossus saw King Tolumnius on the field of battle and said the following: “So this is he who broke the comparct of man with mman and violated the law of nations! If it is God’s will that there should be anything sacred in this world, I will appease with his blood the ghosts of the men he murdered!”. Livy goes on the say, “Putting spurs to his horse he rode at the enemy with levelled spear. The blow struck home and Tolumnius fell; instantly, Cossus dismounted and as Tolumnius struggled to rise struck him down again with the boss of his shield and with repeated thrusts of his spear finally pinned him to the ground. Then he stripped the lifeless body of its armor, cut off its head and, sticking it on the point of the lance, returned to the fight with his spoils.”

I love Livy and I am counting on James Morris to do something similar to Martinez this year when we play Nebraska.
