OFFICIAL NCAA FOOTBALL '12 THREAD

To consolidate things and make information easy to find, here's a thread to discuss all sorts of odds and ends about NCAA Football '12.

Want to exchange gamertags or set up online dynasties for PS3 or Xbox 360?  Go to town.

Want to provide information about roster files or tips and tricks or just get an answer to a question about something?  Go for it.

Want to gloat about that awesome game-winning touchdown pass you made?  Why not.

Want to tell us all how excited you are that you can now play as Virtual Norm Parker in the game?  Sure.

Want to mock EA's default roster file or grouse that the swarm is still not a part of the pre-game presentation?  OK.

Basically, you should consider this your catch-all place to discuss NCAA Football '12.

(NOTE: If a few people could rec this a few times so it stays near the top of the FanPosts for a while, that would be great.  Thanks.)

So far, I prefer RTG to Dynasty

But I’ve only just begun to an online dynasty so maybe that will change.

by The Mexican't on Jul 19, 2011 12:52 PM CDT reply actions

Yes, it will

RTG is better than in past years, but it still runs out of steam. Making it to your favorite school is fun (Iowa high school football!) and then getting the starting job and the hang of that is fine, but at most it takes two seasons to really have success. And then you just do the same thing for two more seasons. It’s fine, just a little repetitive.

Online dynasty has continuous payoff because of (1) recruiting (2) job changes (if applicable) and above all (3) PVP, which gives you a meaningful yardstick. Which is why we gotta get some BHGP leagues going.

I just completed my freshman year

It took me two games to become the starter. I will proudly state that Iowa defeated Nebraska 42-0 in Memorial Stadium. My player, a quarterback, threw 3 touchdowns and threw for over 340 yds with no interceptions and ran for a score with a total of 50 yds rushing.

I would be a go for a BHGP’s league on the PS3.

I'm having a hell of a time...

I can’t defend the pass to save my life. I held ISU to -7 rushing in an online dynasty game, but they passed for like 340. I tried different formations, switching coverages, you name it. The secondary is completely out of position most of the time. They’ll quick pass until I press, then they just throw over the middle and no one shows up.

by fastfred on Jul 19, 2011 6:09 PM CDT reply actions

You and me both.

I played an online game against some Michigan Douchebag and I destroyed his running game, but he beat me 30-27 solely passing over the middle. I just can’t stop it.

by Snacks on Jul 19, 2011 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions

control a guy in the middle and wait

thats what i do, its the only way to really defend the middle

by justsomehawkeyefan on Jul 19, 2011 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I run a lot of Cover 2

and controlling Morris helps over the middle. I find that blitzing with this Iowa team is pretty useless since we have no speed. Every once in a while sending a CB out of dime does the trick especially out of zone coverage when your opponent needs 10 or more. It is pretty much easy to know what people are going to run in the 2nd half of games. If they are down by a TD get ready for lots of pass. They need less than ten yards and in 3rd quarter = cover 2, need less than ten 4th quarter = cover 3. Need more than 10 = cover 3. Down by more than 7 = cover 3 and throw in CB blitz everyonce in a while to catch them off guard. Always stay comitted to the run in pro style offenses and shift blocking assignments when the blitz is coming, the computer won’t bail you out anymore.

"I don't believe in quotes" - Karl Klug

by Nature Boy on Jul 20, 2011 7:59 AM CDT up reply actions

That was pretty much my strategy...

but the crossing routes started torching the zone coverages, so I had to keep it real now and then with a little man coverage. That CB blitz is my favorite. I was once lucky enough to have the CPU throw a screen pass right at the blitzing corner. TD, Iowa.

It seems like even when I know exactly what is going to happen, someone is out of position. I’m sure I’ll figure it out, and I’m still having a lot of fun.

by fastfred on Jul 20, 2011 11:11 AM CDT up reply actions

I only play against online opponents

so it usually takes them time to figure out to throw crossing routes. That and the fact that I feel like I am the only one online willing to take advantage of tight ends. Cover two man works great if you can get a little pressure from your front four, if not spreading the LB’s presnap works to prematurely cover flats and will usually help in taking away crossers. The MLB is usually enough deterrent after the crossing is complete and OLB’s breaking in from outside can buy enough time to flush a qb out of the pocket. Tough to run for your life and find the TE breaking into an open zone on the opposite side of the field.

Teams

You can create a conference for online dynasty, but I’m not sure that makes picking teams any easier (although it make renaming the B1G divisions easy).

Is dividing up the Big Ten the way to go, or wouldn’t it be better to make everyone start at a 1 star as a coordinator and work their way up the Coaching Carousel? That way whoever gets to Iowa/the Big Ten would deserve it.

Is this also the thread where we can bitch about paying $60 every year for little to no value added?

$120 if you’re the type that buys Madden too. These games are a ridiculous cash grab every year that now other franchises are trying to emulate (Call of Duty, Guitar Hero before it failed, Assassin’s Creed, etc..). I would probably pay a fairly hefty price for a DLC package that just upgraded the rosters, but don’t make me buy a new disk every year that includes maybe 1 or 2 frilly features that could easily be delivered as DLC as well! Charge around $20 to $30 to download new rosters and other BS, and EA avoids having to print, package, ship, and promote a brand new box.

And before someone says “not everyone has their console connected to the internet” – fuck that guy, why did you buy a computer if you’re not going to hook it up to the Web? Because your kids play it? Well your kids are dumb.

about MLB 10 The Show and MLB 11 The Show.

I have my character in MLB 10 up and getting close to some records. I spent some money on getting his attributes up to be competitive right away. I can see my self spending another $60 on the newest game. I will probably by MLB 12 but we will see.

BTW, if you have never played MLB (put in your own year) The Show, it is THE best baseball game out there. I highly recommend it. The fact that you can play Road to the Show (RTTS) mode is great. You create your character, pick a position and then set the settings to “only play the plays your character is involved in” and the game goes much faster . Just a great game.

this year I downloaded the demo, played one full game, said “meh”, realized I have 5 games on my shelf I haven’t finished, and haven’t thought about it since.

I had an every other year rule, but finding those games for cheap at a gamestop plus the jump from PS2 to PS3 pretty much killed it. Now I’m back on track.

Difficulty settings

I don’t understand how on the new NCAA 12 game, as well as every NCAA game in the last five years, on the Varsity setting I can be ahead 35-0 at the half, while on All-American it is the exact opposite, with more interceptions than points and single-digit rushing yards.

And I know you can go in and adjust the setting of every single component individually, but that’s not the point. How can there be such a massive difference in one difficulty setting? I can’t even imagine the Heisman setting.

by Luke SkyRecker on Jul 20, 2011 11:14 AM CDT reply actions

I am in the exact same boat.

Why is there not a “Conference First-Teamer” setting? I crush everybody on Varsity, and lose my shirt to directional Michigan on “All-American.”

But, I usually like to beat other teams while running the ball a lot, so I tend to stick to Varsity.

by WaterlooChazz on Jul 20, 2011 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Mix up what you are doing

There are plays that are automatic first downs on Varsity and INTs on All America. The problem is that if you don’t move up quickly enough the game reinforces all your bad habits. You don’t learn how to make the right reads on AA/Heisman by making the wrong reads over and over on Varsity, so it is difficult to make the move.

That said, the guidebook and any number of strategy/FAQ sites will give you a buttload of go-to techniques for any given offense. It can be overwhelming at first, but if you just pick one or two plays and practice them on a difficult level until you know all the decision making principles inside and out and then repeat with a few different kinds of plays, you’ll be competitive in no time.

In the meantime, three common mistakes that come to mind for people struggling on AA are: (1) throwing into coverage (a completion on Varsity might be an INT on AA), (2) sprinting directly into the line on running plays instead of reading your blocks and saving the turbo for after you make your cut, (3) using too many juke/spin/jump/dive moves or none at all when running with the ball, (4) sprinting for the corner or trying to scramble when the ball carrier is slower than the opposition and/or has a terrible angle.

On defense I think the most common errors are just whiffing on tackles and giving up huge plays. Which is super frustrating, but no one made you take control of the DB!

but i am sure you knew what I meant. jNW means so little to me that I don’t care about the town name as long as it is close.

Joined an online dynasty with some friends, decided to try Super Sim for week 1 since it was a patsy.

I enjoyed it. Recruiting takes a bit longer if done online because there’s no “quick call” option, but it’s nice to be able to keep up from a computer if the console isn’t an option.

Snacks and I started the PS3 NCAA 12 League last night

Better get on it soon.

Snacks is taking Miami (OH) and I have Ball State.

Miami (OH) beat #23 Missouri by a romp, I believe the score was 42 – 7
Ball State beat Indiania by the score of 27 -17.

Could be a great year in the MAC conference in the BHGP Dynasty.

Hope more of you join as there are still 9 spots open in the BHGP Dynasty.

I'm the Offensive Coordinator

of THE Ohio Bobcats. Man, I wanna play FCS schools the whole season. We beat FCS Midwestern(I think…) 74-14. It was so bad they took my HB out of the game because he’d already rushed for 263 yards and 5 td’s in the beginning of the 3rd.

Clearly I’m pitching Conference Prestige and Championship Contendor while recruiting. Which is a completely painful process for this school.

Oh, and my biggest complaint about Online Dynasty. How in the hell do they give Ferentz a C in Coach Loyalty? If anything, he should be an A+. Thanks for adding me guys, it’s been fun so far.

I don't know if this has been touched on (giggity)...

but it now seems that every quarterback is Denard Robinson. I’m playing a dynasty as a DC, and the quarterbacks are running all over the place. I started playing DT and just spying to contain it.

That being said, Vandenberg is an absolute stud when he runs between the tackles.

In other news, the CPU still takes 3 seconds between plays, and was throwing the ball like we were down by fifty when I had a three-score lead on #2 Michigan.

by fastfred on Jul 23, 2011 8:56 AM CDT reply actions

fully agree

also running spread and sprinting for the sidelines to break up the play only to pass all the way across field to a receiver who is no longer covered is cheap.

Yes.

I have a friend, and I used to play NCAA against him (in person). Son of a bitch would run with the QB at least once per set of downs, and lateral all over hell. And because I suck at defense, he’d usually complete about 3 out every 4 laterals.

I’d sort of understand it if he was doing so with Nebraska or an old Oklahoma team, but he was doing so with Miami FL or some other team where every skill-player has 85 or 90+ speed.

We will become more intensity!!! --What Reading Rambler thinks Tom Brands should do.

Due to some absolute ownage in our PS3 Dynasty

I’ve readjusted the sliders a bit. Being able to beat teams so badly (which all except one of us did) isn’t really that fun. These new sliders should make for much closer games, but still allow for us to be able to play the game. Most of us aren’t the greatest gamers.

oh my god

conference play in the MAC is AWESOME! I’m probably going to get rolled by the user teams, but the other teams are straight laughable compared to the POWERHOUSE that is THE Ohio Bobcats. I get my starting HB and Qb injured for a portion of every game. Sad part is…I can’t tell the difference between them and the backups. If I’m lucky, I’ll be signing a few 3 star recruits(!!!!!) and I was in the top 5 for a 5 star QB(so close…guess Auburn had a little more “prestige” than I did). Also, sitting at 3rd and 24 after a couple of offensive line fails and running the EXACT same 5 WR play to get aboot 30 yards(like clockwork) is pretty great.

I officially started one...

I tiered all of the teams into the different conferences based on prestige and will do relegation/promotion before the beginning of each season. There are 4 16-team super conferences and the top one has 10 teams so they can play round robin. I’m hoping this will work out as well as I hope.
