Everyone agrees that Legends and Leaders was a misguided attempt to name our beloved Big10 divisions. Hopefully Delaney will follow through with his promised reconsideration after this season.
A Simple Plan: After this year, whichever division's team wins the championship game, becomes 1st Division. The loser's division becomes 2nd Division. This would be decided annually. It would give fans something additional to obsess and cheer about, even if their team wasn't in the championship game.
This division plan is a few things that I deem necessary for any naming convention:
- Doesn't favor two schools' histories like some have called for naming them after coaches
- Doesn't try to squeeze geographical labels where they don't fit (we already can't count)
- Would be entirely unique to the Big10
The only minor drawback would be the record books which might get a little confusing.
In the future, if the Big10 expands again to something around 16 teams, then I would also be a backer of Euro soccer's relegation. While the idea of it spreading to the rest of the NCAA would be interesting, it is pretty difficult to do logistically. However, inside the Big10 it might be feasible and would give Division 2 teams something to fight for.
