I'm not going to lie.

I definitely said it was 2, and then when I saw people say it was 288, I began to doubt myself. I mean, there are 6 or 7 people on the front page alone that are saying 288. And 50 million Elvis fans can’t be wrong, right?

But seriously, the answer is 2, right? Right? RIGHT? Help me, please!?

Think of it this way

48
-
2 * (9+3)

You do the bottom part first, then divide 48 by it.

Brunettes not fighter jets

by rockyh on Apr 9, 2011 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

No, Swarley has it right

It is 48/2 x (9+3). Or 48/2 × 12. Parentheses, then the division and multiplication from left to right

by HoyaGoon on Apr 10, 2011 2:49 AM CDT up reply actions

rockyh is correct. Parentheses first, then multiplication, then division, then addition/subtraction

by therealCatnuts on Apr 10, 2011 4:03 AM CDT up reply actions

NO

it is definitely 288. Multiplication and Division are on the exact same level and can be done in either order. PEMDAS is merely to help people remember the order, in fact division is just multiplying by the inverse. Plus, the 2 is not part of the parentheses and you could add in a multiplication if you insist. HoyaGoon and swarley are right on this one. Excel has 288, oh I dont know maybe because it is right just like every calculator and math teacher will tell you.

Yes, I realized I was probably wrong because Excel had it the other way

People that write it as

48/2(9+3) and not (48/2) * (9+3) or are just trolls.

Brunettes not fighter jets

by rockyh on Apr 11, 2011 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

In other words

It’s not incorrect to interpret the “/” as a solidus, where everything to the left is the numerator and everything to the right is the denominator (as many calculators do unless instructed otherwise). The equation is intentionally ambiguous to troll people; there are a dozen ways to write it that are less ambiguous.

by HoyaGoon on Apr 11, 2011 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

48/2(9+3)

first the parentheses
48/2(12)
then left to right because division and multiplication are the same level
24(12) = 288
i thought it was 2 at first, but realized there was only the one set of parentheses.

obviously this is just a ploy to splinter fan bases. it’s a borderline trick question so either answer is understandable.

by BoilerHawk on Apr 10, 2011 11:51 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

Coming from a math teacher

Boilerhawk is correct, the problem mixes notation. In algebra, division is usually represented by fractions not a division symbol. If it were written algebraically, the 2 would be under the fraction, eliminating confusion. If it were written arithmetically, there would be a multiplication X to help eliminate confusion.

If it helps, my Casio graphing calculator says the answer is 288 with a multiplication symbol (the correct answer) but 2 without. One more reason to upgrade to a TI.

by justsomehawkeyefan on Apr 10, 2011 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm hoping that over half my Algebra II kids would get

But in a test situation, it would depend on the topic. If it was on order of operations, they would lose two out of five for making a significant mistake. If it was on solving a quadratic equation, only one point for making a minor arithmetic mistake.

Do you ever read anything nonfiction books about math?

I read a pretty darn good book about Archimedes “Eureka Man”. Some pretty interesting stuff. Not real mathy, but it gave me some historical perspective on some mathematical concepts.

I will add that to my summer reading list.
One of my books talks about the high suicide rate of mathematicians (luckily, not math teachers).
I did give this to my Alg II students in a bell-ringer today, they nearly rioted.

A brief history of mathematical expression notation

Up until the advent of programming languages handling complex mathematical expressions in a single operation, the above notation for “forty eight divided by two, times the sum of nine and three” was almost unheard of. A forward slash in a pre-programming language context would be used as a solidus, a notation that, although less-common, was sometimes used to denote fractions (e.g. ¼ ). Everything to the left of the solidus (and in most cases, in superscript) is part of the numerator, and everything to the right of it is part of the denominator. A few programming languages and pocket calculators still use it as such. In this context, the correct answer is 2.

However the slash can also be interpreted as a division symbol, ÷, in which case the expression is evaluated from left to right and gives the answer 288.

No mathematician would ever use this sort of notation, and its interpretation in a computer program or calculator would entirely depend on an arbitrary choice made by the designer of that instrument. And working in the academic assessment industry, I can unequivocally state that this expression would never, ever make it onto a test that was measuring a student’s ability to do math.

TL;DR: “/” is ambiguous as mathematical notation. Both 2 and 288 can be correct depending on context.

Mathematica: 288

by Ferentzfever on Apr 14, 2011 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Of course... doesn't everyone?

Seriously though, it’s because of the research project I assist on. We have some legacy CFD code that works (F77) and we are working on porting it to F95 to allow:
A: Multi-threading (just got our CUDA GeForce GPU today!!)
B: Mesh skewing
the latter of which is really giving us problems. We gotta apply a finite difference method to the vorticity equation for unequal spacing of the data points. If we are unable to do that, we’ll take the easy way out and apply a conformal mapping to our computational space.

Eventually, we hope to be up on BOINC so that we can be massively parallel, internally and externally!
