Oregon, Auburn both lost money on their trip to the MNCG
We saw this with UConn, as well as others. The bowl system may start to collapse under its own weight before a playoff gets here. At some point, the cost to the school for the lessor games is going to stop schools from accepting, or there are at least going to be radical changes to the number of hangers on that are allowed to go just to cover the cost of "guaranteed" tickets.

Not Oregon
IF (and that’s a big if) it ends up that they paid for players, they got two for under 30k. Compare that to Auburn, which allegedly spent more than 180k for ONE player. You’d think with Uncle Phil’s money that they could at least pay top dollar to those recruiters.
This resolves itself instantly
when schools take the money made at these bowls instead of Bowl Committees. It will happen sooner than you think.
I spent half my life's earnings on wine, women & song. The other half I wasted.
Ok, after reading the story, they didn't really lose money
Since their share of the conference bowl pie will cover their losses.
It just sounds better to say they lost money.
Remember, sensationalist stories sell.
Think of me like Yoda. But instead of being little and green, I wear suits and I'm awesome. I'm your bro- I'm Broda!
the takeaway points are
1) the schools take too many people to bowl games and
2) unsold tickets at full crazy prices (or tickets that they give away and don’t recoup the cost, see point 1) are a massive cost to schools.
It never gets to be easy.
Why the fuck doesn't it ever get to be easy?

Plus, do they REALLY need to be in the city of the game for over a week?
I can see going in a couple of days early, but you can’t tell me that paying hotel bills for probably 200 players, coaches, trainers, not to mention cheerleaders, bands and the fringe people is cheap. And those people have to eat. You’re not gonna be able to feed a defensive lineman on $25/day!

I wonder if they take the bands a full week early.
As far as the players, I think a week or more is a good idea for many teams. If B1G team is playing in a warmer climate it makes sense to get them there early and let them acclimate to the extent possible. Games in domes though? Probably not so much.
As far as Iowa goes,
I can say that Band/cheer/fringe people head down about 2 or 3 days before the game. It depends of what kind of events there would be (pep rallies, parades, etc.) but 3 days would probably be the earliest on that usually.
