NCAA Tournament Open Thread: Thursday Night Sweet 16 Action

(via FunnyorDie)

Hey, the NCAA Tournament's back!  No more pretending to care about NIT games for you!  On tap tonight:

* 6:15pm: #2 San Diego State vs. #3 Connecticut; CBS; Verne Lundquist and Bill Raftery
* 6:27pm: #2 Florida vs. #3 BYU; TBS; Gus Johnson and Len Elmore
* 8:45pm: #1 Duke vs. #5 Arizona; CBS; Verne Lundquist and Bill Raftery
* 8:57pm: #4 Wisconsin vs. #8 Butler; TBS; Gus Johnson and Len Elmore

Gus and JIMMER seems like a potential match made in sports broadcasting heaven.  The Gus crew also gets Butler, who played two of the most exciting games of the first two rounds, with two of the most balls-out insane finishes of the tournament.  Hopefully the Law of Gus inspires a third-straight wacky finish for the Bulldogs.  Other than that, we've got the other one-name wunderkind of the tournament (Kemba) taking on the highest-seeded mid-major left standing (SDSU), plus: DOOK DOOK DOOK.  Kyle Singler has the most punchable face left in the tournament, so if all hell breaks loose and Derrick Williams smacks him in the face, well, he probably couldn't have helped himself.

The usual rules of open threading apply: no porn, no illegal online streams, no slurs, no politics, no religion, yadda yadda yadda.  OHHHH!  THEY'RE IN THE HORSE!

really?

So they could fellate the Big East? I like the CBS networks and most of their announcers. No way ESPN could have as much widely available coverage. Not without sticking shit on ESPNU or ESPN3.com. I’m glad that ESPN doesn’t have March Madness.

by PackerHawk on Mar 24, 2011 8:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Is ESPNU/Classic really much less available than truTV?

ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 is a wash with CBS/TNT/TBS, I’d say.

On the other hand, no ESPN means no Vitale or Mike Patrick, which is a plus.

or maybe that was because he looked like a freakin’ expert compared to Pitino and Martelli in the next couple days of that weekend.

Uconn seems poised for a run

Been under the radar all year but are athletic enough to take care of who is in front if them.
Im from there and this is the first time in my 40 year old life I’ve ever written something positive about them.
Of course I’m stuck in Bugahaw (Omaha in case that doesn’t translate) so my vision is jaded at the moment….. There’s no place like home….

I get that the media hype is excessive.

But from a player standpoint, Jimmer is just fun to watch. Anyone who loved watching Chris Kingsbury should be able to dig up a little fondness for watching Jimmer on offense.

"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"

by RossWB on Mar 24, 2011 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions

He's certainly a good player

But he bears the burden of receiving Tebow-esque and probably excessive hype all year. I, for one, just find it amusing that a Florida team has to face that player for a change.

by brock_tune on Mar 24, 2011 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't really hate Jimmer,

but he has gotten way to much hype.

Kingsbury was awesome in that “young-gunslinger-like-Favre” way, but he didn’t have to carry those Iowa teams and they never seemed to be so desperate to get Kingsbury the ball. Jimmer is just a good all-around scorer, but sometimes I almost think the team is working too hard to get him the ball (I know, it sounds like the lamest theory ever).

The fact that Chizik was able to parlay two years of failure at ISU to a job like Auburn was bizarre.

Usually, guys who use a place as a stepping-stone actually WIN games at that place before they leave. I wouldn’t be crazy about seeing Iowa used as a stepping-stone, but wins are wins and it’s important to re-establish Iowa as a place where you CAN win.

In an ideal world, Fran does just that and stays for a long, long time of course.

As young as Butler's coach is, he looks like a class act. Several coaches could take lessons from him.

Think of me like Yoda. But instead of being little and green, I wear suits and I'm awesome. I'm your bro- I'm Broda!

Not sure what that means.

I don’t follow the NBA and only know who popovich is, nothing about his personality

LOL. That's pretty good.

I’ve read the Shelby Foote books and a bunch of other books. But I never would have pulled that.

To be fair,

I just checked out a Civil War generals site that had a lot of pics, and chose the best match.

Not rooting for it

But it sure looks like the assistant was much better than the head coach who got hired to the big time job. Just like Boise.

by Ratface McDougal on Mar 24, 2011 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.

I’m just hoping Iowa now has the coach to turn it around. That is why I was talking about CO becoming a power (so that Iowa does, too).

I think we are on the right track. The sport played in CHA this year actually resembled basketball. Which is a huge step.
