Women's Basketball

As so written by my friend SallyMason on the Men's Basketball post, I think the Women's Basketball team deserves more recognition than they receive. Here are just a few things from Hawkeye Sports:

Kamille Wahlin: now junior, believed to be the first Hawkeye freshman to ever record a double-double in her first career start (14 points, 10 assists vs. Michigan on Jan. 26, 2009)

Jaime Printy: now sophomore, Big Ten Freshman of the Year; shattered Iowa freshman records in scoring (501), three-pointers made (82) and assists (99); led Big Ten freshmen in scoring, three-pointers made and free throw percentage

Kash Alexander: now senior and bad ass, became the first Big Ten women's basketball player to record two triple-doubles in the same season when she accomplished the feat as a sophomore; scored 1000th career point in game vs. Penn State on Feb. 6, 2011

Of course they can't do it alone. The rest of team really pulls out the muscle and seriously fight, fight fight, until the game is won. We have a really young team that's really good now and will be a lot of fun to watch in the years to come.

AND of course no team can be complete with their coach. To me, Lisa Bluder is the Shangri-la of what Iowa Coaching should be about. Don't get me wrong, Kirk does well, and Fran is making leaps and bounds with his team... but the woman's on and off court accomplishments are astounding. It also reflects on the caliber of her team.

Lisa Bluder: coach, three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year (2001, 2008 and 2010) and two-time WBCA Regional Coach of the Year (2001 and 2008); advanced to nine postseason appearances (seven NCAA and two WNIT), including NCAA Tournament berths in each of the last three seasons; a 189-123 (.606) record at Iowa and her 26-year record stands at 545-265 (.673); 189 wins at Iowa are the second-most of any Hawkeye women's basketball coach, behind Hall of Famer C. Vivian Stringer (269 wins)

and c'mon, everyone knows who Vivian Stringer is... which also reminds me... I was at the wrestling meet on Friday and over heard someone say "Who's head are they holding up?" Someone else answers, "Dan Gable." Answer: "Who's that?"

Palm face.

But I digress. Please come out for the few remaining home games at Carver. Ready?

February 10 at 8:00pm vs. Minnesota

February 16 at 7:00pm vs. Wisconsin

February 24 at 7:30pm vs. Illinois

Ok. If you come to the games, come say hi to the pep band too :) we enjoy company!
