Everything That Is Right About Hawkeye Hoops
(Well this should certainly be bumped. Great win, great moment of celebration. -- Ross)
We were all pretty excited about the Indiana win, and rightly so. It was a helluva game to watch. But I think it finally showed us Fran is the man, no doubt about it. His heart, tenacity, and winning mentality shows in his team. This short clip from the locker room, especially, shows me that. The players love Fran, Fran loves the players, and it's pretty damn sweet to see him jumping around with them after a big win.

Yep. Funny, the video coordinator sits directly behind the bench during games.
One wouldn’t think that, but you know….
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.
Awesome
That is some fantastic awkward white man jumping. In all seriousness, though, I’m very happy for those guys.

The real gold of that video is Speraw chest-bumping everyon right behind the Franimal.
I believe this video gives us a taste of what is yet to come
from a sport we have mourned for many years and left for dead since the late 90’s. You can feel a sense of closure of the old and a rebirth of the new. Still in its infancy, you can see the symbolic passing of the torch and the awakening of a sleeping giant.

Historically, Big Ten coaches don't go to other conferences unless they failed on a certain level in the Big Ten
although, Iowa is one historic exception as Lute Olsen left for Arizona and George Raveling left for USC. Alford took a small step down, although he would never admit that playing Air Force & Colorado St. as conference foes is inferior to playing Illinois and Wisconsin.
There just are not a lot of great jobs out there in college basketball that can just walk in and cherry pick Fran out of Iowa City. I would guess one might be Notre Dame and two others might be Villanova, Pitt and those kinds of programs. But if he figures it out here and makes himself a hot commodity I would expect he would double his salary, have kids in high school and be a state hero.
"I wish you luck with a capital 'F'" - The Real Elvis.
I agree your last sentence
KF went through that same process. He was greeted by a frustrated fan base because he wasn’t Bob Stoops. He kept his head down and got to work. Started to win a couple of games and compete in others. Then the hard work turned into success and he became a hero.
I think Fran has an easier job with the fans because we want to be basketball fans, its just been a rough decade. The only thing that worries me is the “fishbowl.” KF has seen the full effect of it in recent months. I obviously don’t know Fran beyond the press conferences and videos like the one above, but not very many people love being under that kind of scrutiny ALL THE TIME. This is professional sports to Iowans. We have nothing else to follow.
But to your point, how many of the “big-time” programs get less scrutiny than IC. I would guess not many. So my point might be for naught.

Outside of UCLA, Kentucky, etc.
basketball is a tamer lifestyle, coaching-wise, than football. I would think Fran stepped into a perfect situation. He succeeding Lickliter, not Hayden Fry. Long. long leash at this point. though I don’t think he will need it.
"I wish you luck with a capital 'F'" - The Real Elvis.
I don't think basketball coaching is much tamer.
the season is still 5 to 6 months long. Even close road trips are a grind. And I have to think that recruiting still takes its toll.
The football team usually still gets more spotlight, but there is still plenty for the basketball coach, especially from mid-January and forward.
While I hope and think Fran is skilled enough to make it somewhat positive or at least somewhat neutral for him, the spotlight of Iowa has really seemed to wear on our last few coaches: (Lick nearly let the stress kill him, Redacted had the infidelity rumors and the Pierce backlash, Davis was under-appreciated out of his job, Raveling couldn’t get in tune with the culture here or vice versa, and Olson left).
Like I said, I think Fran may be one of our more skilled coaches in knowing how to get along with and “use” the media. But, if they ever turn on him, or if they ever get overbearing on his family, it will be a travesty. And then, I could see him jumping to a similar or better program. I wonder how much of a chance he had at the St. John’s job (even though it is an over-rated job)? If he had a legit shot at that, and chose Iowa instead, then I’d say that bodes well for us keeping him at Iowa.

I'm not sure I agree
with the whole basketball is a tamer lifestyle. There are few players to manage but also fewer coaches with which to manage them. Also your playing over 2 times more games that have to be scouted and prepared for. Football you have a week to get ready.. always. Basketball is sometimes less than 24 hour turn around to prepare for an opponent.

Great points, OH.
While your examples are excellent, I’d just like to say that I’m not sure an OSU to Maryland move back then was a huge step up. Illinois to KU is a step up.
Outside of jNW and PSU, I’m not sure the Big Ten is more comfortable with losing in basketball, but many do give you a year or three (rather than a game or three in the ACC or the elite programs) to prove yourself.
Really, if I was a jNW alum, I’d be kind of embarrassed by how little they expect from basketball. I know they can’t expect an NCAA tourney every other year, but to never have made it?
I think PSU’s issue may be apathy about basketball. When I watched Iowa at PSU a week or two ago, it was kind of refreshing to see an Iowa game where the opponent had what appeared to be way less fans than we get at Carver.

Fran began his head coaching career in his late 20s and has walked the sidelines for 14 years
at schools that are NCAA tournament afterthoughts, at three schools that collectively spend less on basketball than Iowa so you KNOW he’s having the time of his life having nearly every game televised, even nationally on ESPN, playing games in a 15K+ seat arena that even when poorly attended has far has more fans than any of his former multi-use gyms ever had even if packed to the gills, an office he doesn’t share with the swim coach, a video coordinator who played in the NBA for years and so forth. I’m sure he feels like he’s hit the jackpot. This is no spoiled coach. He probably thinks his cup overfloweth with resources and now he’s winning games against teams that are basketball royalty (current and historic) and he’s barely begun the rebuilding process.
I totally believe in the dude.

Did we just see the video of "the moment?"
Is this going to be looked at in 2-4 years as the moment the return worked started to pay off and Fran is truly the man?
Last night on BTN some show was talking about how no team wants to go to Iowa City right now to play. The point was made that tOSU was the cream of the conference but there just isn’t that much difference between 2 and 11.
Very promising signs.

I think that is a very good point...
part of the return to prominence is managing your home court, playing tough teams tough, being dangerous in other words. I think Iowa is as dangerous as they have been in four years…we had some nice wins in the past three/four years but the perception was those were surprise attacks. Now I think teams realize they have to bring it to Iowa City and I think you will see less and less of the “that was a surprise” analysis when Iowa wins a game many think they should not.
I think the next step is to get a win in the opening round game of the B1G tourney.
"I wish you luck with a capital 'F'" - The Real Elvis.
Yep.
I think the next step is to get a win in the opening round game of the B1G tourney.
This. Absolutely this. I mean, obviously a single BTT win is not the height of my ambition, but before we can run we have to learn how to walk, or some such cliche. We haven’t won a BTT game in (I believe) at least four years and recently we’ve been absolutely massacred in those games, despite not playing high-level competition.
I’m also very curious to see if we can steal one of the home games this week against Wisco and Minny.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
I think Minny is ripe for the taking.
Also, could Wisky be looking ahead to their match up this weekend with OSU? Not holding my breath for a sweep, but we’ll take one of these games this week.
Minny definitely looks vulnerable.
But I’m leery of the matchups inside and of Hoffarber going off like so many three-point shooters have done against us.
I agree that Wisco could be looking ahead to their big OSU game (they actually still have a shot at the Big Ten title if they can beat OSU twice and get someone else to knock off the Buckeyes too), although I’m sure our two-game winning streak will help them be wary of us.
But we are at home and we’re coming off the two best games we’ve played back-to-back, which is encouraging. I believe we can get one of them.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
Yeah, I think Minny is a bad match-up for us
unless we play lights out from the FT line and 3-point line, I can’t see us beating them. They could fall apart, but I don’t like the match-up. As for Wisconsin, I love that match-up. They are more solid and will not beat themselves, but we can guard them and play them. Of course, we need to grow even more to win games like these. This isn’t Indiana, these are tournaments teams beginning their stretch drives. A win in either is a clear sign of progress…major progress…in-season progress. Big stuff.
"I wish you luck with a capital 'F'" - The Real Elvis.
Minnesota is in a tailspin right now
Yes, they have 3 bigs, but aside from Mbakwe, their bigs are no more talented than Brommer. Hoffarber can’t be the surprise shooter from the arc when he’s stuck trying to be a point guard.
We HAVE to beat Minnesota at home. In my eyes, and given the direction/momentum the two teams have, that would be a let-down loss.

In MN's plastering by tOSU
tOSU had 22 offensive rebounds, Minny had 24 defensive rebounds. I know they have three big guys but they haven’t been playing very big. When OSU puts up a shot it should be much better than a 52% proposition the defense comes away with misses even with the studs OSU has.
You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning
by The Bacon Explosion on Feb 8, 2011 10:56 AM CST up reply actions
I actually think we could beat Minny.
We played them well (in the 2nd half, anyway) at their place. They looked really sloppy against OSU and Indiana recently. I think they were a bit overrated and are starting to come down. Hoff going off from 3 is a big concern though and our defense will have to be up to the task.
I dunno, man.
Minnesota seems to fall apart every year. From what I’ve seen, unless things have changed, Hoffarber will have a more difficult time going crazy since he has to manage the offense (Their other PGs are either with another school or injured). On the other hand, I think Leuer and Taylor are both more dynamic than Minnesota’s guys.
Of course, Penn State did beat Wisconsin, so maybe they’re crap. Who knows? Conference play is weird.

To continue Ross’ analogy, they were laying there like blobs, now learning to roll over. Will learn to crawl, stand up, walk, run. This gives indications of going the right direction, and it’s good to be mad again, because at least I care. I have no illusions about the difficulty of the task ahead. On one hand, we’re not tOSU. On the other, Fran isn’t going to get the one and done guys for some time, so he can build a team. The public signs we see point to his guys liking him, and he liking his guys. That, and that they are (mostly) watchable, are remarkable in year 1.
The elder statesmen on our team
need to relearn how to win and how to hate losing with a passion. I think the new guys are still fresh from winning HS programs but Gatens, Cole and Brommer have grown accustomed to losing. That is a tough one to unlearn sometimes.

Same here.
I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.

I hope you aren't surprised by this.
I had a pretty good feeling that they would be all over this video.
Tell me why I'm wrong:
The consensus here really seems to be against me, which probably means that I’m missing something.
To me, this seems like it would have been a perfect celebration . . . if we’d held on against Ohio State. But this was a narrow (road) win against the second-worst team in the Big 10. We just had a more-impressive victory against a once-highly ranked Michigan State team.
I get that this was our first Big Ten streak in awhile. I get that this was our first Big Ten road win in awhile. I get that it was probably emotionally exciting to pull of a comeback and win a close one for a program that hadn’t done those things in awhile.
But these guys are jumping up and down like they just won a championship. Is this how locker rooms are after every win? Were they performing for the camera?
Will they have anything left in the tank when they’ve done something of even more significance? Are they going to have to blow something up if they make the NCAA tourney next year?
Seriously, I must be missing something here. Educate me.
Looking at the team in terms of a progression where......
1) Learn to be competitive with the worst teams.
2) Beat the bottom teams and be competitive with the average teams at home and be competitive with the bottom teams on the road.
3) Beat the average teams at home and be competitive with the top teams at home; beat the bottom teams, and be competitive with the average teams on the road.
4) Beat the top teams at home; beat the average teams and be competitive with the top teams on the road .
5) B10 title contender.
Iowa has taken or is taking the step from two to three above. That is worth celebrating. Step four is where we need to get IMO before we continue playing in March but I don’t think we have been above step 2 for a number of years.

Very concise and clearly worded. Better than I could do!
We are improving. Let’s hope we don’t backslide after 2 big games last week.
I mean, it is a little ridiculous.
but nebraska did everything they could do to lose that game (7 turnovers I think) and ISU barely held on…
Here, they came back from 10 down, on the road, in a mildly hostile environment. so, i’m fine with it. they’re a tight-knit group and it’s good to see the chemistry so high. which is all this video really shows me. and that is what is exciting about mccaffery and this/future iowa teams.
When was the last time they won on the road in the B1G?
When was the last time they had a 1 point win?
When was the last time they came back from 10 (or more) down to win
I know you basically said this, but stop for a second and really ask yourself these questions.
I think you have to cut them some slack. Anyone on this team who isn’t a freshman or transfer doesn’t know how to win anymore. They know losing. All of them have been beaten down to an extent this year, and it has to be frustrating.
Frans not excited about a win. He knows winning. He knows this isn’t technically a big win, but look at those 3 questions again, and ask yourself, isn’t he excited because they’re learning how to win?
Aren’t you excited by that? I am. It’s still a tough road, and it’s going to take time, but you have to celebrate the steps.
Also, remember, the guys are 20ish. I celebrated far dumber things at that age than this.
It never gets to be easy.
Why the fuck doesn't it ever get to be easy?

Oh, I'm super-excited. I guess I just thought MSU was a much better win, though without the come-frome behind thing playing in.
I actually think you’re spot on with regard to some fo teh guys on that team never having had an experience of coming-from-behind like that.

I think you got why they thought it was big, but you just don't agree with them.
I get that this was our first Big Ten streak inawhilethese player’s careers. I get that this was our first Big Ten road win in awhile. I get that it was probably emotionally exciting to pull of a comeback and win a close one for a program that hadn’t done those things in awhile
I’m sure that the adrenaline of the last minute of game time and Indiana getting the last shot all factored into that celebration. I don’t think locker room celebrations occur in a realm of rational reflection. There is no putting the achievement into context, it is a pure expression of being so in the moment that all perspective and rationality is irrelevant. Transcendental on some levels.
This is a good way of saying it:

But I just can’t get over my nagging feeling that we’d all be lambasting the Cyclones for a similar celebration.

"I'm so proud to be your coach?"
Yeah, that gets mixed reviews on here. On one hand, any sports fan should be able to appreciate what Rhoads and his team was going through. On the other, when it’s somebody you dislike you’re always going to view their actions through a filter. Sports fans may be some of the most egregious perpetrators of relativism around.
I see what you’re getting at though. I know that at least pain_in_the_sash appreciates the Rhoads moment, and I love it as a sports fan, even as I mock it as a Hawk fan.
