Colts release Bob Sanders
Sad news from Indy where it appears that the Colts have released the greatest defensive player to ever play the game, Bob Sanders. Not terribly surprising in light of his injury history; will be interesting to see if he signs on elsewhere in light of that propensity to find himsel on the IR. But still, a sad development for one of everyone's favorite players.

Didn't see this until after I had posted the link
But most of the commenters at KSK need to get fucked in the ass by a snowplow.
I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.
Well it's an NFL blog so most of them don't follow college football.
There’s no denying that Sanders is great when he’s healthy, but we’ve also got very little evidence to that fact during his time in the NFL. If not for his ties to Iowa, I’d probably mock the guy as well.

Actually
I think the biggest strike against him at KSK is the fact that Peter King has praised him and there is nothing they hate more than Peter King and those things Peter King likes (not that they’re wrong about PK being a huge, long-winded DB gasbag).

Can't really blame them.
Someone of his stature was bound to have a brief (albeit brilliant) career. He gave everything on every play, that’s all he need think about.
Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.
I'm not sure I believe his stature has anything to do with it.
It’s more his style. Hard-hitting safeties are often hurt.
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.
Niners should give him vet min and sign him
we oculd use the help. especially if by some miracle. he stays healthy. Love me some Bob Sanders.

I was just thinking about that
he would definitely fit Fangio’s aggressive approach to defense. However, with the way he plays, I’m not sure how many years he has left in the tank.
You may call me Don Diddles.
As a fellow Niner fan,
I’m fine with it. Just don’t get your hopes up that he’ll stay healthy for more than 8 games at a time, and I’m also curious to see what kind of game he still brings.
I love the idea of Cam Newton getting sacked from two directions by Patrick Willis and Bob, though.

Cam?
I would love to see him get destroyed by PW, you think the cards will pick him up?
You may call me Don Diddles.
I have a feeling that Newton goes late first round at best,
and possibly later on. That means that almost any team could take him. I think there are a few we can rule out (Patriots, Packers, Colts, Broncos, and anyone else who has two or three decent-to-good QBs already).
I pray that the Niners don’t take him, because even though I feel we have to get a QB, I’d like to watch the Niners out of love and not hate.

Green Bay might be just about in the market for another backup
I think Flynn has shown enough potential that he could Schaub or Hasselbeck his way into a starting spot via trade or free agency soon. But I don’t see Thompson using anything higher than 3rd or 4th round for a QB (Stanzi, please let it be Stanzi).
haha
I want Stanzi in SF. Get him in a late round.

I'd also like that.
Just don’t make him start behind the crappy line (Ricky is not real mobile, he’d get killed). Give him a year or two to grow into a possible starter.

I really don't want Cam on the 49ers
I would rather not talk myself down, from slitting my wrists, every time they throw a touchdown pass.
You may call me Don Diddles.
Not surprised
But I wish him the best of luck.

Anyone who can sign him, should.
The problem is he was making 7.5 million per. As great as Bob is (was?), you can’t pay a nearly always injured safety that kind of coin.
I’d wager if he’s willing to take the vet minimum or anything remotely close to it, there are 32 teams that would line up to sign him.
Please note that the internet does not, as of yet, have a sarcasm font.

Matt Bowen seems to think he still has some value.
He wrote a pretty good piece about Bob’s strengths and concerns today.
I wouldn’t mind seeing him in a Packers’ uniform, expecting him to play maybe 20-35% of snaps over the course of the season at the vet min.
A good safety can hang on for a long time.
It’s more instincts and knowledge than sheer athleticism at that position. Guys like Darren Sharper and Ronnie Lott played well past where a cornerback would have had to hang up the cleats.
I really hope he can stay healthy, if so he’ll easily get on a roster. Staying healthy may be nearly impossible with his style of play, but I’ll continue to hope because I love me some Bobby in my life.

I think the days of him being a base package safety are over
I also think he’s such a consummate football player that he would take vet min or close to it to be a situational guy and make the most out of it just to stay in the league. I don’t see him holding out for big money and a starting spot. I could be wrong though.
He was the last player to sign in his draft class
I don’t see him holding out for big money and a starting spot
So he may not make the process easy.
Also, he’s still young, so I don’t think he’s at the stage where you need to consider him a situational player. He’s a ball hawk, just like Sharper. He’ll be very good for whoever picks him up. Until he gets hurt.

I'm thinking about durability.
I think with the injury concerns some teams may look at him as a situational player to try and keep him healthy. And sadly, 30 is not young in the NFL Given his injury history, I could imagine many GMs as seeing him on the downward part of his career.
But I did misjudge his willingness to sign quickly. I’d forgotten him holding out after the draft.
Also, I like to imagine him as a situational player because the Packers don't really need a starting safety
so there is that homeristic wishful thinking.
He's better than both the Pack's safeties.
For 2 games a year that he plays, that is.

Oh snap!
Too bad Lombardi Trophies aren’t won in 2 games early in the season. Although we did do okay with all of the injuries this year.
/Okay, enough with my douchieness for now.
He's a young 30
Not a lot of miles on his body because of all the injury time outs. I’m not entirely sure of this, but IIRC most of his injuries were of the variety where there’s a fully healed outcome (broken bones instead of ACL tears). He should still be at nearly full speed at only 30, and will have several teams making offers. No need to be looking at part-time offers.
He’ll be a monster pickup for somebody if he can just stay healthy. But that’s a big if. Some team is definitely going to take that gamble, especially now that he’s only going to cost a mil a year instead of 7.

So he’ll be making $3-4Mill and playing 3 games next year for the Raiders? Or will Jehreh beat Al to the punch and make him an offer in Dallas? Nevermind, he wouldn’t generate enough headlines by acting out to fit in with Jehreh’s need to be in the headlines.
I don't think he's getting 3-4 mil a year.
Even Al is not that dumb. He’ll be playing for a mil or so and hoping he stays healthy enough to land one last contract.

Oh, his injuries are joint related
Knee swelling throughout his career after an injury his rookie year, high ankle sprain, torn biceps tendon, elbow injury. I don’t think anything requiring surgeries, but it’s like AIRBHG is just fucking with his tendons and ligaments or something because he gets bored on Sundays.
hmmm, those are slightly worse than I expected
Not terrible, but worse nonetheless. Very possible he’s lost a step. I’ll concede that point.

I would HATE seeing him in green and yellow!
He’d look great in orange and blue, though! We have a need and he already knows at least 90% of our defensive calls.
Oh, and Ricky to GB? I would be physically ill!!
Here's something pretty interesting.
I don’t always agree with Mike Florio, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis:

So this is all just one quick move...
so that the colts can draft Sash AND Greenwood this year right?
That really wouldn't shock me.
Although, I think Sash might have to wait awhile to play at Indy, and Greenwood seems like reserve material. Then again, I wouldn’t have thought Angerer would get as much time as he did, so who knows?
