Here's your open thread for the evening: Iowa-ISU hoops, UNI-Montana football on ESPN, whatever.

Are you fucking kidding me?
Ugh. No, it’ll probably just get sent back to me. The fucking Chicago postal service simply mailed me H.E.C.‘s and Rocky’s instead of sending it to the “To”. When it makes its miserable return to me I’ll just FedEx it to you. What a joke.

What possible reason could there be

So, I am a political science major, and I interned with a certain Iowa senator last spring. We got a ton of calls, emails, and faxes from people who were concerned that their local post office would be closing. We literally got NO letters about it.
LOL
In fairness, to the younger generations, we’d find a way to live with the nearest post office being 15 or 20 miles away.
But, to the elderly, it is a big deal. My grandparents live in a tiny town in NW Iowa. Even going downtown and getting their mail from a box is something they really do need and look forward to. It is how they get their newspapers. I’m sure mail is how they get and pay any of their bills. They don’t have a computer, and my grandmother would never make the effort to learn internet basics even if they had one.
So, while I like to make jokes, there is still a need for the postal service. Many elderly people have medical supplies or prescriptions sent to them by mail.
Sorry I got serious on you. I envy you. Poli-sci has always interested me (I majored in history, but got an all-social-science teaching endorsement.) I am usually quite fascinated with history, politics, government, economics, psychology, sociology, etc. I’ll bet you have a ton of great stories from your internship. Feel free to share them anytime, as I’m sure plenty of other BHGP-ers would like to hear them, too.

on this topic
I feel shutting down Saturday service the stupidest option ever. Why not shut down, say Wednesday instead. This keeps the lag down to one day incraments. It also give the majority of people that work M-F a chance to actually go to the post office. Even still, some PO need to be shut down…hell, there are 3 within 4 mi from me in boise.
That aside, they need to find a way to make more money while losing first class letters, or they a doomed.
Please don't tell me how you hate BSU or their turf...I know all too well and keep my toliet water blue for a reason.
by BoiseHawk on Dec 9, 2011 11:32 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Not a problem
We all understood what closing a post office could do to a small town, and how people, my grandparents included, really do look forward to going to the post office. But it was still pretty ironic. I am not exaggerating at all when I say that we got 0 letters on the issue. Expressing your concerns in a way that helps the USPS stay profitable and gets more mail volume for your local post office, apparently, did not occur to any one.
I'm way late to the game
Nobody will probably read this, but I’m going to type it anyways.
The post office’s problem is probably most due to them operating as a government service rather than a for profit business.
There is absolutely no incentive for the carriers to do their jobs better. If the carriers were to actually do their routes in a timely manner, they are only rewarded with more mail. If they come back from their routes to early, it is deemed their route is to short and management may try to lengthen their routes. So why in the world would they want to do anything in a timely manner? They aren’t going to be paid anymore or any less for the job they do.
While I could go into more detail, I feel it may border on the line of politics. I shall stop here and this post will probably fall into oblivion and on nobody’s ears or eyes.
by RH's Bookie on Dec 10, 2011 11:37 AM CST up reply actions
I read it.
I think many postal carriers work harder than what you make it sound like there. But I’m also sure there are plenty of lazy ones, too.

i forgot to mention
I did 3 years of duty at 2 Iowa locations during college. Yes a few carriers do work hard, but a majority of the ones I saw had posh assignments and went out of their way to ensure it did not change. The clerks and behind the scenes sorters did not always have it easy. This is only what I saw, I’m not saying it happens everywhere.
by RH's Bookie on Dec 10, 2011 12:42 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
I'm certainly no expert.
I had a third cousin that worked as a sorter. From what I heard, and from what I know about her and her siblings, I’m kind of assuming she worked pretty hard.
I have a friend of a friend who seems like a good guy who would not loaf too much. He is younger (35 or younger?) and just started as a postal worker within the last few years, so he probably doesn’t have a super-easy route.
Then, there is a father of a friend of mine. He has to be 45 or older, and I think he’s worked as a postal carrier for years. I’m assuming he probably has an easy route, but I don’t really know.

I think a HUGE problem for this team is that this isn't a true leader on this team.
I like Gatens, clearly more than Vint if you are following Twitter, and I don’t blame him for the teams issues but he isn’t a true leader. May CLEARLY isn’t since he disappears for stretches of the season. The rest of the team is sophomores and freshman. I don’t know if Marble, McCabe or Basabe will step up and do it next season. Marble is probably the closest.

Otherwise, not really, assuming Marble is going to continue to be able to get into the lane like this. It’s hard to judge Bryce on this year, he’s been hurt or sick pretty much all season

Marble still has major weaknesses as a defender. Then again, maybe Bryce isn’t that much better. haven’t been able to watch him as much as I’d like yet this year.

So, if $25 a fifth is right for you, and you're planning on drinking Gin and Tonics,
then go with Tanqueray or Bombay Saphire. Both are very good gins for mixing and adequate for Martinis unless you’re a Gin snob.
If taste isn’t so important to you, but you want something at least palatable, go with Beefeaters ($20/bottle). If you get something cheaper than that in a gin, you’re looking at a taste experience like Hawkeye vodka.
Between Bombay and Tanqueray, my personal preference is for Tanqueray as a mixing gin.

I need to try Bombay Sapphire one of these days.
The only gin I’ve drank was some awful cheap shit back when I was 21 or 22.
I used to make large screwdrivers in plastic stadium cups with OJ, gin, and vodka.
One night, I made the mistake of having a big spaghetti dinner, and then putting down two or three of those huge screwdrivers. I have not consumed gin since then, but the taste-memory is probably far back enough (about 9 years ago) that perhaps I could tolerate some gin again.

Scary thought of the night
What happens if the ISU fans start to procreate with their New Jersey counterparts at the Pinstripe Bowl?
A guy asked that to me today and I have been trying to drink the image out of my head for two hours now.
http://victorypolka.blogspot.com/
They have already procreated,
did you not get their Christmas card last year?

I just have this eerie picture
of guys with ridiculous spray tans, gelled hair and gold chains driving tractors with sheep tied to the back down !-35 and every time someone passes them and flips them off they just yell “it’s a cyclone thing”.
Clearly beer is not working, switching to bourbon.

That guy (Jezmez)
has a profile where it says he is a fan of “Stewart Payne’s Flying Coffin.”
But the golfer who died in the plane crash was Payne Stewart, not Stewart Payne.
Is Jezmez so dumb as to not even get a crass joke right? Because I’ve done that, but I’m just wondering.

what will be over? Your posting on BHGP? ISU’s run at cold weather bowls? Pawl Roads’ pride?
Please be concise. Thx.

So, we need a love story, a traumatic event to overcome, some intense competition, cocky attitudes, and an enemy to fight at the end.
Tom Cruise already found the love of his life in the last movie so maybe they will go all Die Hard and give him relational problems or make him divorced with some stuck-up kid a la DH4.
My guess: Tom is now a Top Gun instructor breaking in some new hot-shot kid. Either he or the new guy are trying to overcome some past traumatic experience from “the war.” Perhaps a little like The Guardian. Oh, and they will have to fight either the Chinese or the North Koreans.
The important question here is
Will Kelly McGillis finally return to the big screen? The rest of it my 9 year old could plot out fairly accurately.
