Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Will Never Top Michael Jordan

Iowa played -- and won -- their first game open to the public earlier this afternoon. Unless you were in CHA, the only way to see it was to watch the online stream on video.btn.com. I did watch it, although not with my full attention. They seemed to play OK in general; if anyone who watched it more closely (or was in attendance) wants to chime in, please do so.

The first proper game is Friday against Chicago State; we'll try to have better game thread coverage for that.

I watched.

As I did last year, I am keeping my expectations in check. I am hoping for a .500 season with a few big upsets along the way.

Here are a few observations

~We looked weak on the boards. Really going to miss Cole.
~Oglesby and White played great for their first collegiate game. Didn’t look lost and the team seems to have good chemistry.
~Everyone seems to be much more comfortable.
~May is going to do some outrageously athletic things this year.
~Basabe looked very unimpressive.
~Cartwright is good

GO HAWKS!

This seems about right

Although of course you left out the most important news, which was B-STUBBS getting some playing time towards the end. Hopefully the coaching staff realizes what they have this year and starts giving him heavy minutes.

Basabe was really bad. He didn’t do anything on offense, and played his usual terrible defense. Fran seemed like he spent half the game screaming at him.

It was not pretty to watch

I was really hoping to see him take control of a game like this.

I really wish Cole had somehow got an extra year of eligibility.

He was so good at times last year, and I can’t imagine Brommer or Archie having games or the impact or the leadership he provided.

meh

I thought in the first half White didn't seem too comfortable, but he seemed to settle down in the 2nd.

~0-2 in dunks for May.
~Tons of fouls, but I don’t recall the first “and-1” until midway through the second half when Gatens took one down the lane
~speaking of that, Gatens drove a few times nicely. The “Lick” might be gone from him
~Fran got mad again a few nice, of course
~I think we’ll need Brommer to get back and be improved. That experience will really be handy inside.

Gatens drove plenty last year, especially at the start of the season

He’s just really bad at it, and got swatted at the rim almost every time he tried. In theory he should be getting to the basket more because it increases his chances of going to the line, but in practice he just winds up getting stuffed over and over because he’s not very athletic.

So according to the new ESPN Magazine I just got in the mail...

Iowa is projected to be 58th overall, and 10th in the Big Ten. Also, Chicago State ranked last in their rankings of all D1 teams.

Basabe was really bad

He didn’t do anything on offense and played his usual terrible defense. Fran was yelling at him a lot.

Gatens and especially Cartwright looked pretty good, and I was impressed by Oglesby and White. Oglesby has a really pretty jumper.

But, most important B-STUBBS got to play some towards the end. Hopefully they will realize what they have and begin giving him heavy minutes soon.

whoops meant to cancle this post

I realized that it was repeating a lot of what was said a few posts above and tried to made it a reply instead, then went back to cancel the original one and hit “post” instead.

Legitimately my favorite player

I want a jersey that says “B-Stubbs” on the back, but I’m afraid they wouldn’t sell it to me because it has part of a player’s name on it.

Basabe, our best player, had a terrible game

and the rebounding was weak this game. but overall, i hear there were alot of reasons to be positive, like Archie and the free throws

A few more points

-Gatens looked like a complete player
-Our free throw shooting was very good
-Our three point shooting was better than last year
- White is a very good ballhandler for his height, and had a sick baseline dribble and dunk
- McCabe used his new weight and strength nicely
- The Big O only played five minutes and didn’t do much
