It's been a while since I posted, but after today's game I felt like I needed to vent a little. And by vent, I mean give my view on how the season is going and tell everyone else why their view is completely wrong.
First of all, this has been one of the most interesting years in recent memory. In fact, recent memory is confused beyond belief right now. Iowa beat Iowa State and Penn State 3 years straight from 2008-2010 and lost to Northwestern 3 times in that same stretch. This year, none of those apply. For the second straight year, we have lost to a Minnesota team that had more losses than we had wins. We beat Pitt in the biggest comeback in Hawkeye history. Then after thinking the season was all but lost after a 5-3 start, we beat 7-1 #15 Michigan.
Now, let's rewind and go to last week. ALL over the internet, I heard, "get Ferentz out of here". To me, that was ridiculous. You are going to blame Ferentz for this? I will admit, I was epically pissed after the Iowa State game and thought Ferentz had lost his mind, but he recovered in the win over Pitt. Then after Minnesota, all hell broke loose. But no one was complaining about KOK. Nobody had Norm's head on the chopping block, even though this is arguably the worst defense the Hawkeyes have put on the field since maybe 2006 (and that might be generous).
This isn't about Kirk Ferentz. This is about the team going out and finishing games. And when you think about the losses, maybe we are being a bit too critical. Iowa State? They are a 5-4 team with 3 losses against ranked opponents, with a win over a ranked opponent and a FCS powerhouse in UNI (you can make fun all you want, but Appalachian State can make their argument that FCS isn't always an easy win). Penn State is the only undefeated team in B1G play, and have an incredibly solid 8-1 record. Minnesota may have been a bad loss, but they also lost games against USC and Michigan State in the 4th quarter, so although the 2-7 record may not look so good, when Minnesota is clicking, there isn't much stopping them. Not to mention, all 3 of those games were on the road. Not easy to do.
I believe I read an article on here last week after the loss saying it would be tough to make it to a bowl game now. I mean, seriously? Between unproven Michigan, a sub-.500 Purdue, a suddenly-questionable Michigan State, and a defensively underperforming Nebraska team, you thought we would lose all? I tried finding the pessimist in me, and I still found a win against Purdue and one "upset" against the Michigans and Nebraska. And so far, we are bowl eligible with a favored game against Purdue in two weeks.
And wasn't this supposed to be a bit of a rebuilding year? I mean, come on, we lost quite a bit of talent. They showed they can win tough games, and after the Nebraska loss to Northwestern and some awfully shaky play by Michigan State the last few weeks, if Iowa catches some luck there is a possibility of winning out. Now, that's a lot of luck to count on, but it's not out of the question.
And how about our offense? This may be the most talented offense Iowa has had in... ever. James Vandenberg won't be a Heisman candidate, but put him on your radar for next season. Same with Marcus Coker. 250 yards in one game? Six 100-yard games and 4 consecutive games of 120+ yards? He may have started off slow, but holy shit...
And Marvin McNutt. What do you even say? He didn't even have a touchdown against Michigan, yet he made a ton of noise with a career high 9 catches and 101 yards. That happens to be his 6th 100-yard game of the year also, with 3 consecutive. For an Iowa receiver. Yeah.
So maybe these Hawkeyes aren't so bad? Maybe they are the Hawkeyes we should have expected. Maybe, just maybe, we could end up 9-3 by the end of this season. More than likely, we will have more than 6 wins. And this high-powered offense just now seems to be clicking with Marcus Coker finding himself in the last few weeks. This team seems to be performing to it's full potential, and I'm sick of the whiners. Lighten up BHGP.
