Per the Cornnation commentariat

Bo Must Go.

I’ve come to the conclusion that under Bo Pelini, we’ll continue to be mediocre and win 9 or 10 games, nothing of too much importance or note worthy.

by kythom on Nov 19, 2011 6:49 PM CST reply actions

Ummm

Don’t see how they can pair ‘mediocre’ with ‘win 9 or 10 games’. Welcome to the B1G, Husker Nation.

They have higher expectations than Hawkeye fans.

9 or 10 wins every year for Alabama, LSU, Florida, tOSU, etc. is mediocre.

Right, which is why heartburn and suicides are on the rise in the state.

But they are unsatisified with it, and I don’t know if that’s good or bad. They will continue to search until they get a coach that can make them that again. Or they’ll go another 10-15 years in the Iowa-category and eventually be resigned to their fate.

They wer in the Nat’l Championship game 10 years ago, though, even if it was a flaw in the system. Even still, since Ferentz took over, the Hakweyes have won 9 or more games five times, the Huskers eight times. They are still on a level above Iowa. They are hovering, in my opinion, between that top tier and middle tier.

Recruiting talk...

Best realistically possible commits?
QB – Siebenshuh or Steve Donatell (Tom’s younger brother) or Mollberg or Lommen or Northern*
RB – Greg Garmon
OL – Jordan Diamond and Alex Kozan
DL – Nate Lohn and Faith Ekakitie
LB – Quanzell Lambert
DB – Ka’Ra Stewart and Anthony Morgan

That would be nine. They are 12 and Ferentz said 8-10. Take out one of the DB’s. Anywho, I think that would be a very Iowa-like class but one that also has real talent and fills needs. Getting Lohn and Ekakitie with the already-committed Jaleel Johnson and then Cooper from last year would really, really go a long way in making this D-line great again. Three Top-20 DT’s in two years would be awesome. Then throw in Nico Law, Lomax, Lile and those two DB’s with Alston, Collins, Fisher, Taylor and Lambert, and the defense looks like it would have a good chance to rebound in the coming years.

*I still want Kyle Brown because he reminds me of a bigger Drew Tate.

USC beating Oregon is karma

for Oregon going for 2 every chance they get and basically running up the score all year. Them and Wisky both have major negative karma points.

Hard to give karma points to USC

between Kiffin himself and his tendency to randomly go for 2 (although in all fairness, it’s not because he’s mean, it’s because he thinks it’s a video game), I think USC burned through any residual good karma a long time ago. If they had any to begin with. And they didn’t

So without a Pac-12 school in the title game are we a little out-matched in the Rose Bowl?

Pending Standford wins out they would be the highest ranked Pac-12 team. I’d actually like to see them vs. Wisky. MSU….not so much.

Oregon - MSU is a bloodbath

MSU players are fainting in the 2nd quarter. But Wisconsin might be able to hold their own if they don’t get stupid. Run the ball the entire game.

What is it with Iowa and Baylor slinging the ball around in the 4th quarter with leads?

Both teams preserved clock for their opponents and gave the ball back with way more time left than they would have had to running it. Plus on the previous drive Griffin III was snapping with over 15 secs left on a running game clock. Maybe while the players are in class the coaches should be playing Madden to learn some game management skills.

I don't frequent the downtown area as much as I'd like, so I wouldn't have the answer.

I love going to live music shows, but just don’t get a lot of time to do so in Houston. I’m hardly ever there.

Oh yeah.

The port of Houston is pretty cool too. I haven’t been on a tour yet, but I’d like to go some weekend when I’m free. NASA is also not too far away (just a nice drive down 45). Galveston is just another 30 minutes past NASA.

Thanks for all the info.

I did think about NASA when I was looking at that hotel website the other day. I wonder if/how much tours of NASA facilities might be less enjoyable considering they have curtailed the Shuttle program for the next few years.

They still have tons of cooooool stuff there.

Also – if you haven’t been to Houston before, check a google maps of Houston and do a search for the museum district (Right next to the Medical Center) and it will show you a BUNCH of museums. Also, you can see where the sporting centers are in relation to each other. Just make sure you stay away from the railyards you see in Northwest Houston. That’s the bad part of town.

by EnergizerHawk on Nov 19, 2011 11:43 PM CST up reply actions

Now that I look at the map, there aren't even any decent hotels in that area, so you should be good.

I live on the Northwest side of Houston and it takes me a good 40 minutes to get to Reliant. Hopefully I can be in town for that one if Iowa makes it there.

Thanks.

I usually go into a bowl trip without a ton of planning for sight-seeing.

Sometimes, I still have a darn-good time (a Sugar Bowl, an Alamo Bowl, an Outback Bowl). Sometimes, the trip seems pretty quick and not very eventful (Orange Bowl, Insight Bowl). Obviously, it does help if the Hawks win.

"the game"

assuming Iowa ends up here. It’s really too bad the B1G is no longer affiliated with the Alamo bowl because San Antonio is probably the nicest Texas city to visit for a weekend and there are a shit-ton of good hotels near the stadium, which is right downtown.

by kingsbury_from_deep on Nov 19, 2011 11:21 PM CST up reply actions

Well, the Cotton Bowl is close to downtown, but

you wouldn’t stay by Fair Park itself. Sketchy would be generous. There’s a lot of decent hotels within 10 miles, and I can’t imagine that would be tough if they play here. I’d rather Reliant though. It has a roof

by txhawkeye on Nov 19, 2011 11:24 PM CST up reply actions

Yes.

I made it to the Alamo Bowl a the end of the 01 season (Ferentz’s first bowl).

I saw the Alamo from a ways away, but it was jammed full of people.

Most of Riverwalk was nice, but if you weren’t in the mood to eat or spend money shopping, it was kind of boring. I wish I had known about/had more time for some “free or low-cost” diversions there, like museums or a good bar (except, I was under 21, so maybe a bar wouldn’t have been great fun).

I thought it was the Texas Bowl... Hmmm...

I’ll have to see if I can try to get back in town for that day, just in case if Iowa goes to that game.

Houston's best win

was nearly losing to UCLA.

Enjoyable potential BCS scenario: Three SEC teams, Michigan State, UCLA, Virginia, Rutgers, Kansas State, Houston, Penn State.

this is theoretically possible.

by Loretta8 on Nov 19, 2011 11:34 PM CST reply actions

Wow. What a shit salad.

But, I do sometimes whine about how the same teams have a deathgrip on the top of college football.

I think I’d prefer those teams were matched up against traditional powers, with plenty of upsets happening.

Finally, I don’t want UCLA there, as I don’t want Neuheisal to keep his job. I’d like to see them fire him and try to hire Peterson away from Boise.

I want good games. I wouldn't mind seeing Bill Snyder play in one of these.

I don’t want Michigan State to get in though. Why? Fuck them, that’s why.

Wait, wait, wait

I though the rule for only 2 from a conference was still in effect?

"'Contrariwise,' continued Tweedledee, 'If it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; as it isn't, it ain't. That's logic." - Lewis Caroll, Alice Through the Looking Glass

by chitownhawkeye on Nov 20, 2011 7:57 AM CST up reply actions

It does...mostly

There’s a loophole, where if #1 and #2 aren’t conference champions, then the conference champion still gets a bid. So, if UGA can pull an upset and the voters are still convinced that LSU/Ark/Bama are the top 2 teams…

Doc had an article about it

by rupertj on Nov 20, 2011 8:24 AM CST up reply actions

That may be tough to keep the top 2 after a loss to georgia

Especially because a loss by say LSU hurts previous teams losses to LSU, the again maybe not because georgia has won 9 in a row now.

about the ISU victory was that Rhoads plagiarized his “I am so proud!” speech in the locker room last night.

Maybe.

I’d like to think Rhoads could invent a new catch phrase for the biggest win in program history.

Perhaps something like “We’re going to WallyWorld!!!!!!”

by hawk4trees on Nov 20, 2011 12:21 AM CST up reply actions

I'd just bring beer and watch you.

Despite my scotch quote from Anchorman above, I’m not a huge liquor fan. I’ve had a glass of Templeton once, and I thought I would only enjoy it if I could cut it with a soda or cola. And I realize this is close to sacrilege, as Templeton is very smooth.

I just tried some Jack Daniels’s Tennessee Honey about a week ago. It is good, but I felt it would be better with some 7Up or Sprite or something.

My POV...

…the economy is questionable enough, lets not add to the unemployment role.

by hawk4trees on Nov 20, 2011 12:20 AM CST up reply actions

The main problem I have with the theory of

firing KF or our coordinators, is that I think we better find someone that is proven and is better.

If you can’t pry Bob Stoops or Chris Peterson or someone else excellent away, then why risk what we have now? We did that once with hoops, and we’ve been paying for it for the last decade or so.

But in all seriousness.

I think that this season is a great opportunity for Norm to retire. Not be forced out, to retire. Not that he is not an amazing coordinator. Just that he’s in bad enough shape physically that I feel guilty wanting him to keep coaching.
