BLACK HEART GOLD PODCAST 71: THE OTHER ELEVEN O'CLOCK KICKOFF

Spartydog_medium

Obviously, in the grand scheme of Big Ten football-related events, this weekend's Iowa-Michigan State game falls right around whether Velveeta shells and cheese is really better than Kraft.  We're still an Iowa blog, though, and so we push ahead into Sparty Week with Pete Rossman, longtime writer at SB Nation MSU blog The Only Colors.  Enjoy.

No over-the-top poormouthing by PodCast guest blogger = I like Hawkeyes' chances.

Seems that the results this year have been inversely proportional to PodCast guests’ expectations of their own teams.

So: yay for Iowa.

RE: The spread offense

Someone needs to tell Pete that both NW and Purdue were early pioneers of the modern spread offense that has dominated CFB over the last decade. NW of the zone read running version and Purdue the 5 wide passing version.

I just wanna see Kirk Ferentz cry.

Whoops

Right you are. Mea culpa. Sometimes recent memory tends to stick out more than the past.

Really, the tackles are what you're worried about?

I think the interior of the line is where we’ve had most of our trouble this year. Tobin and Scherff have both been turnstiles, especially last week (though granted some of that is Mike Martin being really good).

And now they get to try to block Jerel Worthy...

Scherff in particular had a bad game last week

But he was a rFR going up against a very good SR. Not unexpected.

I just wanna see Kirk Ferentz cry.

This is true I suppose

On the other hand it is not exactly encouraging from our supposed Left Tackle of the Future.

Sparty

Ok, non-footbal question (kind of). How does the kid inside the costume see out? Is it some kind of Jedi trick where you perform your mascot duties better by not being able to see?

We're gonna need a montage. Ooh, it takes a montage.

WHOA

What do you mean, kid inside a costume?

Sparty is the man! Haven’t you seen the preview for his biopic??

That was good.

Did you watch ISU’s Cy?

Indeed!

Fixed

Velveeta is just a lump of salty delicious goo.

Not to say it tops Kraft Mac’n Cheese, it is nonetheless high in the pantheon of completely artificial dip accompaniments

Michigan State's offense is awful on the road. Awful. There's no other word for it.

GO IOWA AWESOME, now and forever, unless PSU sees them in the B1G CG

Yeah

If this game were in East Lansing, I wouldn’t be optimistic. As is, I think Iowa wins with relative ease.

That's very relative with this team.

Uh, yeah.

Mas Casa’s prediction seems way too reasonable to disagree with.

How rockstar of Jacobi and Vint

to appear on the Chris Farley Show years after his passing.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

Nah, I'm having fun with you

and your writing is top-notch, which is really the point of blogging.

Also, I enjoyed the audible change in tone once Spartan basketball was brought up.

Once basketball was brought up,

I was hoping for some situation to come up that would end with a player, coach or ref ending up in the water and sharks being brought up. I guess it’s too soon for that sort of stuff. That’s the stuff for Marchifornication.
