C'MON, BRATWURST!  DADDY NEEDS A NEW PAIR OF SHOES!

Ahem.  Here's your regularly scheduled open thread for Friday evening.  There's playoff baseball, college football (Fresno State-Boise State), and whatever else you care to watch on a Friday night.  The usual rules of open threading apply: no illegal online streams, no porn, no inflammatory political/religious talk, no slurs, etc.  Keep the douchebaggery to a minimum and everything will be kosher.

How does one deal

with going into a game where he honestly believes the team he supports is probably better and playing at home, but expects a loss anyway, but thinks that’s kind of OK because he believes in the moral greatness and artistic merit of the opponent?

The answer: 114 proof bourbon

seems likely

i bet on kellen moore before the season to win the heisman at 16/1. he’s now 7/1, which is good, but i feel like he’s got almost no shot because boise has so few marquee opponents left. he’s going to put up insane numbers and get invited to nyc but can’t win unless there are no other good candidates.

by Loretta8 on Oct 7, 2011 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, for him, it's not going to matter what the numbers are. They're expected to be great.

He’ll need EVERY OTHER marquee name to fall on their face, maybe twice.

Whatever

When it’s a fight between San Diego State, Georgia, TCU, and Toledo as to who the best team on your schedule is, you don’t deserve MNC consideration unless every Big Ten, SEC, and Big 12 school has 3 losses.

My rule is this: if the 6th best Big Ten team would be 7+ point favorites against everyone on your schedule, you do not deserve MNC consideration.

just got back from Carver (my first time since the gussying-up)

…where Iowa just squeaked by IU in a matchup of co-last place volleyball teams.

The new “club seats” they put in look kinda nice. Black, padded seats. I’m not sold on the curtains they’re using for the smaller sports. Maybe with women’s bball it’ll feel better since there will be more people, but with 1,300 people for vball, it still feels pretty empty. Mediacom court, of course, is Mediacom-tastic.

Oh by the way, did anyone see American Horror Story on Wednesday?
More sex than scary, but lots of sex. I can’t believe they get away with the shit they were showing.

by hawk4trees on Oct 7, 2011 10:18 PM CDT reply actions

It was good.

Nothing really mind-blowing, but it looks like it’s going to go into a Rosemary’s Baby direction. The most sexually charged part has to do with the main male character sees the maid, who is surely a ghost, as this REALLY REALLY HOT maid, and his wife sees her as a old haggard house keeper. And this is where the sucks comes in…If she’s doing somthing really sexy, and the wife walks in…It ends badly for my mental state.

It wouldn’t take much to make it really awesome (and there are about a dozen plots/characters they could /should crib from the comic…), but I fear they’re going to keep heading down the dumb route they headed down for too much of S1.

I would argue that '98 was worse.

We’re used to it now, but the sight of ISU celebrating on our field after a lifetime having having failed to do so was pretty traumatic. Add to that the general hopelessness surrounding the team, the awful loss to Minnesota in the finale and the sad, unceremonious retirement of Hayden (followed by a Hell of a lot of anger by the coaching search results), and it pretty much made for my most miserable season as a Hawkeye. The next year was simply a start-from-scratch scenario.

Or if it’s partially because he’s had great ideas that were stolen from him. Walt is sick of not getting credit for his genius and he’s embraced his inner-Honey Badger. He just doesn’t give a fuck anymore and he’s not letting some karaoke loving geek take credit for his formula. I love Walt in his current form, but there’s no denying that he’s become an evil motherfucker.

by GuttedSnowBird on Oct 7, 2011 11:20 PM CDT reply actions

He is very good and I think that's a good comparison

But I still don’t think Moore has the arm strength to play in the NFL. Brees has a stronger arm, and he was no world-beater until he got in Payton’s system in New Orleans. Moore reminds me more of Danny Wuerffel. Not to say he’ll never be any good but his options will consists of about 2 or 3 teams that will have the system to match him.

by jebushchrist on Oct 8, 2011 7:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Arm strength just doesn't matter much anymore

From the 1950s until the mid 80s, it did. Michael Bishop and JaMarcus Russel have to rue the fact that they weren’t born 40 years earlier. Jim Plunkett and Joe Namath had better be glad they played when they did.

Quick reads, a quick release, and accuracy within 30 yards are all that matters anymore. As the BHGP cliche goes, there were many factors that went into this: more rules protecting QBs, a sleeker football, smaller pads, more strict pass interference rules, the invention / adoption of the zone blitz, faster CBs…they all played a part in making passing easier to do, passing efficiency more important, and the ability to make big plays with the QB’s arm less so.

Does the NFL completely realize this? No, I don’t think so, but for the most part they do. Can Moore be a good NFL QB? Give him a decent O-line and a couple guys with good hands, sure. Barring that, no. This goes for pretty much every NFL QB.

He'll be back for Penn State and Michigan

But this hurts OSU big time. He was the one player they had out that I thought could really make that team better. Boom Herron is a talented back, but consistent goodness has never been his thing; he’s arguably only the 3rd best back on the team. Adding a solid O-lineman will help, but as Penn State has ably demonstrated, and not in a good way, over the years, a less talented offensive line with no weak links >>> a talented offensive line with one or two duds. Ohio State will still be starting a couple bad lineman.

Much as I mock OSU’s QB situation, and deservedly so (they won’t admit to it, but they would trade for McGloin in a heartbeat), Bauserman has chemistry with Posey. They play well together. This is mildly frightening.

Tony LaRussa is a surly prick

but I have nothing but the most sincere admiration for his abilities as a manager. I don’t think people realize that he may be one of the 3-5 greatest coaching minds in any sport over the last 50 years. That may seem like a bold statement but go back and think about it.

The “Go-Go” White Sox weren’t particularly talented but he squeezed every ounce out of them. He built the A’s into a juggernaut (albeit one that underachieved) and then took control of a foundering Cardinals franchise and turned them into a maddeningly consistent squad despite a thoroughly average payroll (competing in a division against a top-5 payroll).

Back in ‘06 The Onion ran hilarious capsules on each of the playoff teams’ chances. They were full of pithy remarks about Jim Leyland’s smoking and Omar Minaya’s social habits and whatnot. Under the Cardinals entry it simply read “nope”. And then they won. And here they are again, the afterthought of baseball’s postseason, having just unseated what is possibly the best pitching staff I’ve seen in my quarter century of baseball viewership.

I think that's an oversimplification.

I think their responsibilities are totally different. Baseball managers, more than in just about any other profession, have to play amateur psychologist on a daily/hourly basis. Few things are as vulnerable as a professional baseball player’s psyche and the ability to tweak or nurture them in just the right way is a delicate science.

by rupertj on Oct 8, 2011 9:29 AM CDT reply actions

It can be profitable

I just think ESPN is really overestimating the state of Texas’ interest in the Longhorns when Texas is meh or worse (not to mention if that coincides with decency by A&M), and overestimating interest in Texas east of the Mississippi, west of the Rockies, or north of Kansas.

The same was said about the Big Ten Network, so I guess there’s a chance, but the Big Ten had 3 teams that are consistently in the top 10, if not top 5, in TV ratings, even when they suck. Now it has 4. That doesn’t even consider Indiana basketball, which is also a highly TV-rated program, even when they suck.

Talking out of turn... That's a paddlin’. Looking out the window... That's a paddlin’. Staring at my sandals... That's a paddling. Paddling the school canoe...ooh, you better believe that's a paddlin’.

I did.

I never watched much Ren and Stimpy, but I knew enough to get the reference.

THRILLHO

I spent half my life's earnings on wine, women & song. The other half I wasted.

I'd love to see OSU beat Nebbie today.

Mostly because I’m fairly certain that OSU will lose to Illinois, WIsconsin, and probably Michigan and I like the idea that Nebraska could be out of the B1GCG before November.

I'd love to see monkeys flying out of someone's butt.

Which I feel is slightly more likely than seeing o$u win today.

And I would like to see Nebraska eliminated from the CCG on Nov 25.

Nebraska probably has just one more loss on their schedule before Iowa.

I think it’ll be more fun to see them struggle this year just to keep them humble

Herbie and Corso both just picked Iowa over PSU.

Guest picker Blake Griffin picked PSU with a decidedly slack-jawed look on his face.

Anyone else play FIFA 12?

My issue was the giant difference in difficulty between semi-pro and professional.

I was slaughtering teams at semi-pro and couldn’t score in professional. It was stupid and I lost interest quickly. Can only win 7-0 so many times.

by The Mexican't on Oct 8, 2011 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes, I finally got used to professional

and don’t mind the higher difficulty, except that it seems artificial.

The AI for the player-controlled team is infinitely dumber than the CPU. And a computer player with 72 speed (with the ball) should not out-run a defender with 80 speed 100% of the time. Collision detection seems to affect the user-controlled players much, much worse as well. Etc., etc., etc.

So, yeah, the difficulty comes from stacking the deck against the player instead of the more organic and subtle increases in competition in past years.

Exactly.

And the player’s AI teammates are idiots at the professional difficulty. Luis Suarez isn’t going to dribble the ball around the 18, and yet he refused to put the ball on target unless my player is telling him to fire away. I have my own responsibilities, I shouldn’t have to tell my star striker when to fire.

Oh, the number of times I've just sat there waiting for a teammate to make a run . . .

I won the MLS Cup this morning. But that was more a function of getting used to the stupid quirks over time than anything else. It’s not as fun as FIFA 10, which is the last version I bought.

I’ll know not to trust the reviews next year, at least.

(And yes, I’m playing an MLS career)

So Texas was unranked in the AP preseason poll

but now they are nearly in the top 10 after beating Rice, BYU, UCLA, and Iowa State (collectively 8-10)?
