“Who hates Iowa? We hate Iowa”
by hawk6894 on Oct 29, 2011 6:28 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
I don't hate Iowa.
But the scales have fallen from my eyes. This team isn’t good anywhere. The O is inconsistent, Marvin disappears sometimes, the D I don’t want to talk about, and giving up that onside kick proved that our special teams are short bus special. I’m not going going to root for Iowa State. I still hate OMHR. But this Iowa team isn’t ‘02. It’s not ‘09. I hope to hell it’s also not ‘07. But they’re not the teams we’re used to seeing, likely because we’ve replaced all the good players on the D line (and they were very good), the linebackers are safety sized (see D-line), the o-line is only intermittently good, and the QB can’t seem to recognize pressure from the edge. Time goes on things change. I can’t hump hills for 20 miles with a metric shit ton of gear on my back and then drink beer either. Seasons, bro.

I'm not gonna let my frustration get past this post since pro sports are going so well for me but:
How is Kirk Ferentz so risk averse that his own risk averseness keeps him from looking at ways not to be risk averse (i.e.: how other coaches coach)?
Fucking ridiculous.
"...take it to Hamsterdam."
If he was as risk averse as you imply
He would have had the kick return team ready for the onside. “Went for it on fourth? Obviously considers this to be end game scenario. Stand by for onside kick.” At least that’s how it went in my head before it went down.
by Norm Parker's Amputated Toes on Oct 29, 2011 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions
That's the point
He’s so conservative that he can’t even fathom that another coach might try something like that so he runs the regular kick coverage. Minny would have been dumb to not try that. It would have been Coked up Werewolf straight down yo motha fuckin throat on that drive.
by Quinn Early: Motivational Speaker on Oct 29, 2011 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions
I think you have it backwards.
If he was that risk averse, he would always line up in onside recover, out of fear that the other team would try an onside.

So easy, even a caveman can do it.
Thaw the bird overnight in cold water in the sink. Go to butterball.com and get the cooking time for your size bird. Disposable aluminum foil pan, and Reynolds oven bag. Rub inside of bird with Kosher salt. Equal parts carrots, celery, and onion inside the bird, don’t compact them though. Cook however long butterball says. Best stuff ever. That’s it. Fuck all the spices. Fix the stuffing as dressing with Pepperidge Farms Herbed Stuffing using a package of sausage, 1 small can mushrooms, and 2 stalks celery. You’ll be a hero.

Yeah, we don't do "stuffing" in my family.
We do a “dressing” which is a dry, herb-laden concoction that acts as a perfect foil to a moist bird and a wet mess o’gravy.

I thought I hated stuffing for over 30 years, before I stumbled upon what I typed out for you. Once you get the hang of turkey broth(from the pan)/bread crumb sausage mixture you’ll have the perfect balance of slightly crisp top layer and nice and moist bottom layer for your dressing.

I was tryin to pay attention, but work got the best of me, and I couldn’t really follow. All I know that is that it seemed like Iowa was cruising to a win (although not many points) and they lost. Any explanations?

I don't mind so much that Iowa lost
I think we all knew this was a 6-6 team, and we’d be lucky to go 7-5 this year.
I mind losing to Minnesota. Greatly. The loss to Iowa State stings less than losing to the dumpster fire of a football team that is the Minnesota Golden Gophers right now. And I say that with some affection, I have a personal connection to one of Minnesota’s starters. But Minnesota is horrible, horrible, horrible, in every way that a team can be horrible.
I can stomach losses to Penn State, Michigan State, Nebraska. But …. Minnesota? I mean. This team needs 2 more wins to get to a bowl game. I know we’re eligible with 1 more win but realistically, we need 2 more, and I don’t see two wins on the schedule.
At BEST, we beat one of the Michigans and Purdue. The Minnesota win was a critical piece, and given how this team has played on the road, I think we can probably flush Purdue and Nebraska.
Ugh!
A man may leave Iowa, but Iowa never leaves a man.

Hey Brock, you just made me realize that our ability to finish games is a problem that keeps moving
It used to be that we didn’t have enough offense to win games… now we appear to have adequate offense, but the defense isn’t finishing games. In other words, that persistent inability to close out games we should win has continued to be a problem – its just manifesting itself in different ways.
And I’m unfortunately coming to the conclusion, stated by another poster today, that perhaps we are seeing a decline similar to that which occurred towards the end of Hayden’s career at Iowa. The talent isn’t there, and everyone has figured out how to beat us…

The whole fucking league - particularly after today's game - is schizo this year
One thing that really bothers me about Kirk’s teams, though, is we really have a fucking hard time winning on the road most of the time, except when we are a huge underdog against a good team. Then we somehow seem to pull a win out of our ass.
But you really don’t know this year in the B1G what team is going to show up regardless of the matchup. Although it sure looks like Illinois is going into classic Zookering right now.
I’ll tell you this – other than the conference champion and maybe the top 1-2 teams after that, I’m not sure I’d want ANY B1G eligible bowl team actually in a bowl – except that its probably going to be a win for the opposition.
What also concerned me today is Vandenberg is demonstrating a tendency to be unable to win on the road. Honestly, if Rudock is coming on strong now and will be the solid # 2 next year, I think Vandenberg might lose his job if he doesn’t start winning on the road. Although if we’d simply kept handing the ball to Coker we would have won today.
Never *question* Bruce Dickinson!
http://www.thebirdcult.net
by The Bird Cult on Oct 29, 2011 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions
How much do you want from Coker?
I’ll admit, Vandy needs to do a better job on pressure from the edge. But the real problem with this team is on the lines. The D absolutely requires pressure from the front 4 as a scheme. The O absolutely requires being able to block 5-7 from the line. They can’t do that.
by Norm Parker's Amputated Toes on Oct 29, 2011 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions
The staff needs to teach Vandy to recognize the blitz better
If he’s going to have as much control out there as they say he has, then the game plan has to be designed to figure that in road games the other team is going to blitz Vandy until we figure out a way to make the other team pay.
I don’t have an easy answer to that, and honestly, I think Coker is probably doing as much as he can with getting injured in the process, but when you’re getting almost 10 yards a pop, keep running.
Those two missed FGs changed the whole tone of the game, too – we piled up a lot of offense and got nothing out of it. But again, this is symptomatic of our inability under this staff to FINISH GAMES, and I think that stems from their inability to adjust on the fly – there’s too much of the “execute better and you’ll beat the other guy” attitude. This is why Bo S. had to retire – everyone started to figure out towards the end that they knew WTF Michigan was doing and would shut it down.
The same thing is happening to us.

And I’m not saying that anyone could’ve done to GT what we did, but… the option is one of those offenses that when you have a month to prepare for the game you SHOULD be able to shut it down. The defense is weak, but the coaching staff leans on them like they are the 2009 NFL-bound squad. Open the playbook up, be aggressive, score a shit ton of points, and give them a little breathing room. When you have the best WR in the big 10, a running back that goes for 250, and a QB that (we think) can deliver, this isn’t too much to ask.
The offense had 5 fourth quarter yards. That ain’t gonna do it.

And I think its legit for the press and fans to question KF about the road problems
I mean, obviously, Kinnick is a huge advantage for us. That said, why is our team always a fucking dumpster fire on the road, other than recent history?
Kirk is paid way too well to lose must win games on the road, as well as losing the ISU game. When is his contract up, because if this continues, I say there needs to be a clause built in that when he loses road games against opponents we should beat, he – AND the staff – lose salary.
In fact, if the state is going to insist that we play ISU, it should cost at least 250K from salary when the ISU game is lost.

I do think we have a coaching breakdown in several areas
1) special teams not good for going on three years
2) 4th quarter meltdown going on two years (lack of in game adjustments on defense)
3) 2-minute drill at high school level (largely due to lack of using it in myriad opportunities)
4) trickery works EVERY FUCKING TIME against us
Am I upset at KOK for not running it more? Not really. We ran it for over 250 yards thru 3 quarters and scored all of 14 points against one of America’s worst teams. So the people wishing we ran it more need to reconcile that wish with the lack of SCORING. I don’t think we are a poised team. I don’t think we have the fire in the belly of previous teams.
But I am really concerned with relying so heavily on a defense that only works with a good pass rush from the D-line. We did some blitzing but we rarely do what won the game for Minny, which is bring several blitzers.
Bottom line, we are an underachieving team now. That’s who we are. We’ve lost four straight road games when we were a favorite and should have lost five (Indiana from last year).

What's interesting about your four points
In my view is that it shows there’s wayyyyy too much focus on a plodding style of football – maybe I don’t have the right words to describe this, but “execution” football for lack of a better word… rather than focusing on ALL aspects of the game – particularly the parts of the game that we continue to suck at…
Perhaps focus is a better word. I honestly don’t know.

i agree with everything you wrote
except giving up on the run which was unstoppable and also chewing up clock. This was where KOK or KF failed, not running it at opportune times like say on 4th and goal on the four yard line. If we score it shows them we’re out to win and we’re gonna keep rammin it down their throat. If we don’t they’re pinned deep in their own territory. Or again with 2:30 on the clock and needing chunks of yardage to get within field goal range

I think the issues are deeper than calling more run plays...much deeper.
I think this Rhabdo aftermath might be worse than I thought. I think KF has stripped the program of youthful, buoyant energy by being such a organizational freak. We seriously lack enthusiasm.
He eschews two minute offenses, he refuses to be an in-game tactician, he is repeatedly caught off guard by bold play calls by his opponent…and maybe today he ran it too little. But, we lost today because of special teams and defense and lack of a killer instinct.

We've lost other games because of
lack of good-to-great special teams, or lack of killer instinct.
I’m not sure excellent coaching always overcomes those.
I don’t think we’ve lost all our buoyant energy. I think Prater and McNutt still have some. Some of the other guys just seem like usually-quiet hard-workers (Vandy, Coker, Hyde, Morris, JFerentz, Reiff, Kirksey?) Perhaps an answer to that would be to let Daniels, Binns, Bernstine, KMM, Rogers, a healthy KDavis, and a few others “take the reins” and fire up the boys.

I'm fine with it when the team is right
KF’s level-headedness pays of big time during games. I remember watching Brian Kelley lose his shit weeks 1-3 while his team just broke under the weight of a psychotic coach who lost faith in them. When Iowa came back against Pitt a friend noted to me that Kirk’s demeanor and focus on winning never ends up in that shit happening.
The fire has traditionally come from the team. Angerer is a legendary locker room force (who once punched a complaining underclassmen in the face during a team meeting and asked, “does anyone else want to complain?”), and certainly countless others precede him. Maybe there is a leadership problem with the team. I dunno.

Sometimes, getting that killer instinct means living with players that might embarrass you
Off the field. I think if you suppress these young guys too much, its going to pop out in unhealthy, unproductive ways (like arrests and drug use). Who knows – perhaps DJK doesn’t end up hooked on drugs and in trouble at the end of his career – as well as guys who have left the program recently – if KF wasn’t such a control freak.
This goes back to how badly Iowa handles things like the internet and press conferences, too. Iowa isn’t an isolated place anymore, the entire world is open and moving a lot faster than KF would like… and if he doesn’t adapt, he will be out of job much sooner than later.

Iowa runs a clean program and they pay for it.
Sure, things happen with our players that are unfortunate (accused rape, credit card defrauding, etc…) but KF takes care of that shit fast. And those guys never set foot in the facility after that comes to light. KF will never, unlike Dantonio at MSU, allow a Chris L. Rucker to be reinstated the day after getting out of Prison to play in a big game (which was us, and we annihilated them: glory!), or initiate an “investigation” when a D-Lineman plays dirty with an opposing QB. He shouldn’t, either.

Vandenberg's status is not in trouble
He is not a big time QB as of yet. He freaks out at pressure, particularly on the road, but he will get better. I am seeing our problems as being not one unit. We have breakdowns all over the place, all game long. Defense stands out though…they can be awful.

Team cohesion, in other words?
I’m starting to think that all the player defections have had a much greater impact than any of us realize… which is why I would – as an armchair guy here – put someone – who doesn’t have other duties – in charge of whatever it takes, legally and within the NCAA rules, to teach our players to keep their shit together and to stay on the team.
Look at all the problems we’ve had at RB, for example, beyond just injury related… if ARob and Wegher had kept their shit together, there’s not question that this would be a much better team than simply relying on Coker – good at he is – to keep running the ball for us…

We lack depth, which hurts everything...practicing, injuries, etc.
but we also lack certain kinds of players that often help a team rise above their ability. We don’t have emotional clubhouse leaders. Ferentz has been elevating the choir boys and demonizing the edgy players. Perhaps he’s stripped the team of any edge. Turned us into IBM circa 1980, while Apple-type teams are just laughing at us now.
I don’t know. I have to process it. But, today, for me, is one of the lowest points of the KF era.

We’re two years removed from Pat Angerer. I’d love to say those type of players are on every team but they just aren’t. You’re lucky when you find one. That’s the amazing thing about the internet age: everything is so instant-analysis. Do you know how many of Hayden’s teams would have been crucified in the internet age? His teams consistently got beaten soundly by the big boys in the league. Where were his “attitude” guys then? Get some perspective. And I don’t mean compare us to Oklahoma and Alabama and USC. Perhaps you’ve been away too long.

This is what's wrong
You can’t win big if you don’t go big.
You CAN be a big time winner at Iowa, but you’ve got to take the right attitude, and saying “oh we just need to work harder” is not cutting the mustard. In fact, when that phrase is uttered and its obvious that a program is tanking – like ours – it should be a warning flag for the AD to start putting together a short list of replacement coaches.
If we do not see improvement the rest of the season, I think Barta should seriously consider firing Kirk, or demanding wholesale changes in coordinators – the stuff we are talking about has been a consistent problem since 2002.

Do you understand what a red flag it would be for "serious" football coaches
to fire Ferentz right now? He’s won in a manner at a place that by rights he shouldn’t be able to. And you can give me this poormouth, thinking small crap all you want but the reality is that few outside of Iowa fans consider Iowa prime destination. You live a thousands of miles away. I live in the heart of Big Ten country (quite literally, Chicago) and Iowa is about the 6th or 7th school people around here think about.
UCLA, Arizona State, Washington, Florida State, Texas A&M, Georgia, Pitt…those are just a few of the schools where it should be far easier to win consistently given the resources and recruiting available and yet Ferentz has then all trumped over the last decade. Guys like Stoops and the like don’t come to Iowa just because they don’t pay as well or have the facilities or whatever. They don’t come because they know it’s harder here than many other places. And yet Ferentz’ curse is that he’s had such great success that we put him under the microscope each time he fails to deliver a Big Ten Championship caliber team.
Yes, he has several glaring flaws. But I’m challenging you to find me more than a half dozen nation-wide who aren’t already at destination jobs who don’t. Hell, even Les Miles has some huuuuge flaws and he may very well win his second MNC there this season.

Honestly, Kyle, in California, outside of their fans, college football is not a big deal here
No one gives a shit about Cal, USC, Stanford other than their graduates and fan bases. There’s too many other things to do in a state of 50 million people that has the 9th largest economy in the world. The only reason Stanford and USC get so much press is because of their geographic location in large media-saavy cities; although if the 49ners and Raiders hadn’t been big in pro football I kind of doubt that Stanford would be as desirable as it is today.
UCLA has been in the dumper a relatively long time now, and outside of LA, no one gives a fuck about whether UCLA wins a football game, particularly if the surf is up. :)
In Les Miles’ case, he’s got the advantage that no one in SEC country gives a shit whether these guys graduate with a degree or not LOL

Not meaning to talk down to you at all!
California is not necessarily better than anywhere else, but dude, after having lived here almost five years – and California really is different. Really different.
You’re in Chicagoland, if I recall correctly… there’s no comparison between California and Chicago – although I would equate Chicago being much more like SF than LA if you want to compare metropolises… except Chicago doesn’t have the hippie influence. The thing is, the weather makes a huge difference in attitudes. In the Midwest, particularly in winter, you’re just trapped inside, so this tends to create an environment more favorable to breeding rabid sports fans than out here, where its nice almost all the time… and if your team loses, well, hey, the weather’s nice and you can go do something else to forget it, rather than being trapped inside in the ice and snow…
Believe me when I say, though, that I get tired of it being sunny all the time and being hot most of the year. It does get old after a while…

I was quite pissed earlier today.
But, this may be Iowa’s worst game of the year (maybe tied with the PSU game). I’m not SURE we win another game, but I bet we play better than today for most or all of them.
The coaches definitely need to clean up plenty of issues. And grow some balls. But, the players deserve some of the blame, and it was a losing effort in all three phases (4 if we include coaching) today.
And, after watching the evening games, maybe the Big Ten is just a more difficult league than we think. Certainly, no excuse to lose to Minny, but nobody is dominant. Everyone can drop a game (including PSU).
If I combined the standings, here’s what we get:
1) PSU
2) Michigan
3) Nebby
4) MSU
5) Wisky
6) OSU
7) Iowa
8) Illinois
9) Purdue
10) jNW
11) Minny
12) IU
(I fudged jNW, Illinois, and Purdue a bit).
If you really believe our coaches should be fired, I can’t change your mind. But acting like we have any control over that is absurd. And, I’d say it would be unwise and stupid for anyone to set up a “fireKF.net” website. Boycott with your money, and politely make your opinion known on these boards, but don’t be an ass and act like you will get Barta to do your bidding.
If KF and staff take us into a tailspin for 3 or 4 years, we’ll know I’m wrong. But history has shown that won’t happen. We will grow a defense that isn’t young and underperforming. We will grow an offense that doesn’t wet its pants for every road game. I can’t make promises about special teams.
We will make a bowl game and win it, this year or next. I think our road to a conference title is more difficult with a championship game, but OSU and Wisky don’t look like goliaths anymore, so maybe we can get one.
Right now, we focus, we rebuild, we do what Iowans do. We don’t panic, we don’t fire everyone in sight, and we don’t set this program back a decade or two (that’s the shit Jamie Pollard would do). Floyd and the Cy-Hawk will return home. It will just have to be 2012 instead.

Do you think in today’s atmosphere of uber political correctness that Fry would be hired today? I don’t.
You have to be bold in football to win – bold in the same way that Gable was and Brands is now. Why is wrong for us to have a fiery coach with emotion and that encourages his players to play with emotion like Brands, like Fran appears to have done so far…
Control freaks don’t seem to do well at Iowa – look at how Name Redacted and Lick ended up. Ferentz has been more successful but his overtly cautious and stubborn nature may be catching up with him…

they scoffed at Apple and other innovative, energetic high tech companies and within 10 years they were half the company they were.
Right now, we need an infusion of something. That people see coaching as a starting place is very understandable. Because, for example, the talent differential between us and Minnesota was stark. They are fucking awful. But coaching and enthusiasm won them this game. Kill is going to get better recruits and when he does where does that leave us. Gonna disagree there.
They have a few recruits that could have played for almost anyone, but Brewster didn’t develop them at all. Plus there are huge disciplinary and toughness(metal and physical) problems that were created by Brewster basically letting the inmates run the asylum during his tenure.
Also, Brewster just went after all the top recruits according to rivals, etc. There is no uniting scheme to the recruits Minnesota has and the pieces don’t fit together.
Basically SMA is right, I think only Royston and possibly Tinsley or Rallis would be starting on our team.

Iowa is a safe, boring, vanilla place - which is what makes the schools good
And there’s tradition with education that has been there since it became a US state, UI, as the first school to admit women.
Chazz, I think the reason kids learn in Iowa is because they don’t have to worry about some classmate pouring lighter fluid on them and setting them on fire because they “snitched” about some kid stealing a bicycle.
Yes, there are gangs in Iowa too – but its not the scale that it is in other places.

There's probably more networking involved in creative activities than most other professions
All of the musicians I know are constantly trying to make their network bigger to a) get gigs and b) get better which = c) more gigs.
I have friends who are media (painting for example) artists and its just a lot of hard work meeting people to get your art out there and sold. It takes time. One of my oldest friends lives in KC and works for a grocery chain as a store manager but he spends almost all of the rest of his time painting on the side and going to shows. That’s what he’d rather be doing, but painting isn’t bring bringing in enough to pay the bills, raise his daughter, etc.

I actually don't think very much of the Writer's Workshop
Way overhyped… and I have a degree in English and took a lot of writing classes. The WR teaches people to write the “perfect novel as defined by MFAs” not necessarily a book you’d want to read that’s GOOD and that sells a lot of copies.
They’ve graduated a lot of MFAs who are teaching writing around the country, and the vast majority of the grads don’t sell a fraction of the books over an entire career that a bestselling author like King does in a week.
Most of your best selling authors didn’t go to a MFA program, they sat down and learned to write stuff that sells.

But I’m not unhappy. Here’s an example why – I was at a meeting last week with some fairly high up people, and there’s a guy at the meeting who is my age, well respected – and – dying from cancer. He has less than 3 months left to live, he’s got kids in high school, yet he was there, cheerful, looking worse than Jobs did in his last few pictures, with his chemo bag with him (and I’m guessing morphine too).

Its really hard being 2,000+ miles from my kids
Its a little easier since they’re old enough to use Skype and we do talk frequently on the phone, I get some email, but I am missing out on them growing up.
OTOH, their mother and I hate each other, and if we were in the same town it would be constant war. I can see it being OK if I were a couple of hours away. I did have an opportunity to interview for a job in Philly last fall but turned it down because nearly everyone I talked to said “don’t go there – that place SUCKS” and these were well traveled people who had worked in a lot of places.
A couple of years ago, I could have been a lock for a job in Providence, RI that I passed on. Big mistake – but, at that time, my kids were living with their mom and grandparents in Savannah, GA and their mother swore up and down that she wasn’t moving to the NE to be closer to her BF.
Two weeks after that job closed, she calls me and tells me she’s transferring to Hartford… that “this opportunity had just come up”. Um, she works for a large airline, there’s no such things as “sudden opportunities”
