They did it near the student section

I guess the BTN is opposed to publishing awesome stuff near drunjs.

Alvis stepped up

and the d-line played very well. But for god’s sake Norm, can we get a &^%! blitz once in a while?!! They just laid back and let them have that last TD…

Lots of poor tackling

that Coulter-option play worked EVERY TIME. But the contain was amazing today. Especially given Alvis’ prior, um, deficiencies in that area

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

Somehow, three jNW fans (looked like students, too),

scalped tickets to get three rows in front of me.

One of them wore a tan baseball cap that had, embroidered on it, a picture of a green tractor and said “I love farming.”

I’m sure he meant it in a mocking fashion. And yes, if we ever do this again, our athletic department should keep in mind not to put an important part of the card stunt right where they know opposing fans/students will be.

I was pretty resigned to us losing when they tied the game up at 17.

Our defense couldn’t get off the field and we just couldn’t get anything going on offense. It had the earmarks of all the problems we’ve had so far this year/the past few games against Northwestern.

But holy shit they just flipped the switch and started making plays after that.

The best part of that race was following two, um, attractive women for most of the 6 miles

I wasn’t stalking them or anything… probably Vet students, but we were running the same pace… the shorts were um, rather short…

I’m running 10 miles in the morning. Decided to not do the marathon in early December, I really needed another three months of run base totals of at least 25 miles per week before even ramping into a 16 week marathon training schedule… so I signed up for another half on October 30th.

Just back from the game

Great atmosphere, not overly cold.

Best surprise was the flashing TigerHawk on the water tower—anyone know if that is an official thing, or just some guy on the parking ramp being the most awesome dude ever?

Funny thing, crowd really out of the game in the 3rd quarter, just waiting for the Hawks to blow it. Didn’t happen, though, and the crowd was right back in it in the 4th.

Card stunts pretty neat, stripes better than last year, but I’m not sure there’s anything more to be done gimmick-wise next year, though.

Scoreboard made notice of a few recruits in the crowd—just identified by name, though I assume they were recruits—could they have SEEN a cooler game? Can’t imagine it didn’t make an impression.

Finally, loved the bootleg call for Vandy, flashback to Chuck Long against Spartans in 1985. That play ALWAYS works, surprised it’s not run more often.

Anyway, back to my beer. GREAT win, and screw you Fitz.

Donatell played okay, considering how much actual game experience he has, but they picked on him some. It did seem that after he got beat a few times they brought in another DB more often

It looked to me....

….that Iowa came out in a nickel defense, and stayed there most of the game. Castillo was even out there for quite a few plays when, I suspect, they went to dime. I can’t recall seeing three LB’s out there at all tonight, though I could be wrong.

I’m not sure, I guess.

For a 50+ year old man to say “I love Marcus Coker”. I mean, he really took the Penn St. game on his shoulders. And he was amazing tonight. He really ran with anger and energy. I know it’s JNW, but I know good running when I see it.

And yes, it is creepy.

Also, I was very happy to see him run the ball tonight with aggression. He ran with one hand on the ball for the first time since the opener when he fumbled. We need him to be himself.

He really improved over the course of the game

early on, was running well, but looked incredibly tentative. In the 2nd half, when we finally started handing him the ball, ran with some authority. Was great to see.

Also, was rather impressed with De’Andre Johnson late in the game.

My dad is an Iowa alum and every picture of my sister and I as kids involves Hawkeye stuff. We had Hawkeye coats, hats, scarves, gloves, sweaters, sweatshirts, pajamas. Everything else in the house was Hawkeye stuff, too, down to the black and gold-handled kitchen knives and shot glasses.

I’m carrying on that tradition, we dress all four of our kids in Hawkeye garb every Saturday during football season. I hang a 3×5′ flag up out front, etc. It’s gloriously obnoxious. The Penn State fans across the street get it.

How awesome would any corner be after playing three years in a system like Iowa’s, and then suddenly be surrounded by a defense that is quite lack-luster? With two new safeties, two new LBs, and a D-Line that is pretty ineffective more often than not.

Prater is doing fine. Let’s hope he turns it up a little when we hit the “tough spot” in our Big Ten schedule (November).

And with their current schedule, they’ve only got 3 winnable games in my book (Indiana, Rice, Minnesota), which would put them at 5-7 at best….meaning NO bowl.

Now, considering a lot of people had jNWestern going what..8-4 this year or better…a lot people expect the Wiz to get jNwestern to the next step…but it appears its a HUGE step backwards.

I get that

But jNW is really one of the worst programs in the B1G to recruit in, mainly because of their epically bad fan base. He has made them an entertaining team to watch in a market that has a lot of viewing options.. He is smart and really cares about the program. I would bet the odds are great that they would race right to the bottom if he left. I get that they suck this year but I bet he brings them back. Short version, he’s a coach that knows what he’s doing.

by Corncob Justice on Oct 15, 2011 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions

A fanbase is towards the bottom of factors for recruits.

What are the coaches like?
What is campus life like?
What are your odds at getting to the next level?

And at the end of the day, the caliber of student Northwestern is trying to recruit would find it tough to resist the pull of playing in Evanston when put up against Stanford (who is more attractive), Duke, Vanderbilt or Rice (who aren’t more attractive). With the right coach (and Fitz is that) Northwestern can do very well for themselves given their limitations.

but they have limited scholarships just like everyone else who doesn’t play in the SEC. Northwestern can do very well for themselves all things considered. Palo Alto is also more isolated from their nearest city than NU is from theirs. That’s important to some kids.

Stanford is a fantastic school in a great location. They are also limited in the number of spots available. Northwestern has an advantageous position in many respect amongst student athletes of a certain profile.

by The Bird Cult on Oct 15, 2011 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions

A tradition of winning?

They haven’t won with any sort of consistency since John Ralston left in the early 70’s. They had all of 3 winning seasons from 2000-10. Northwestern at their worst was far worse, but from the perspective of current recruits, they’ve been every bit as competitive a program during their lifetimes.

No and No

Do you really think that Iowa didn’t get some recruits tonight? Most athletes do not want to perform in front of a lackadaisical fan base. When you make a great play, you want the fans roaring for you at the top of their lungs. This is what gives Iowa a great recruiting advantage over Northwestern. The reason Fitzgerald has won so many games against Iowa is that he’s a really good coach. And yes JNW has the academic recruiting advantage, but that’s not enough amongst athletes who want to go to the NFL.

He did OK.

He won 8 games a couple times, but Arizona is a a place that was 12-1 as late as 1998.

He did make three bowls (a Las Vegas, a Holiday, and an Alamo), but only won one. He had a losing overall and league record after 7 and a half years. He never won even a share of a league title, never finished the year ranked, and the program was on a downswing from 09 to now. Also, he was a caricature because of his “artery-explosion-in-waiting” anger.

I don’t hate Mike Stoops, but I think I like most of our current defensive assistants better as an Iowa DC than I would Mike Stoops.

What I’d really like to see, is if Bob Sanders is done as a player, that we try to bring him in as a grad assistant or something. I’d love to see Bob Sanders as Iowa DC in 10 or 15 years.

by Ratface McDougal on Oct 15, 2011 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Not entirely true.

First of all, Wisconsin’s offense comes straight from “Coaching Jr. High Football for Dummies” with college athletes who know their jobs very well.

Secondly, while Wisconsin’s offense is checkers, Saban is playing Global Thermonuclear War Games. And LSU may have better athletes then them, but aren’t as disciplined. And they have Les Miles.

I can’t believe Iowa didn’t run the ball even more than they did, but I won’t complain about 41 points.

I really wanted JVB to take a knee after his bootleg (which was definitely not a TD) was called back, just to fuck with Fitz and eat more clock.

I think they tried.

They put three different DBs (Castillo, Lowery, and Donatell I think) on him throughout the game. He also kept lining up in the slot so he was always available on the 5 yard slant. He just knew exactly where to sit down in the zone and it was nearly impossible to stop him. IIRC, at one point he was basically wearing Neilsen as a cape and still converted.

That was breaking a rule at the time though?

They didn’t necessarily get caught (although even that’s not true, since they were on probation for a big chunk the 90s), but that doesn’t mean they weren’t breaking rules.

Not that any of this makes them less awesome.

by mikjones24 on Oct 16, 2011 1:10 AM CDT up reply actions

I think they did plenty wrong.

But the NCAA isn’t (and wasn’t) very good at catching these behemoth football programs at cheating/buying/whoring/drugging/whatever.

The main reason SMU got the death penalty was because they were dumb, repetitive, and pretty overt.

We will become more intensity!!! --What Reading Rambler thinks Tom Brands should do.

by WaterlooChazz on Oct 16, 2011 1:13 AM CDT up reply actions

NO, it's not the main reason

it’s the fact that SMU, while on probation for paying it’s players, continued to pay the exact same players. It truly boggles my mind how so many people watched the exact same documentary about SMU, and STILL don’t understand just how so dick-slap-in-the-face egregious SMU’s actions were. NO OTHER SCHOOL EVER, has EVER been so blatant about their abuses and to claim that Miami, or anyone else is in the same league as SMU is the worst kind moral equivocation.

Me too.

It’s weird about Marvin. He’s going to hold some of the career WR records, but aside from 7 got 6 at MSU, I feel a bit like he has underperformed over his time at IA. I realize how absurd that sounds, but it just seems that way to me.

That's an interesting situation

I’m not sure Georgia is as desirable of a job anymore as it was 10-15 years ago. You think about it – they really haven’t had a big-time player since Walker in the 80s… and they’ve been riding off of that ever since. Its weird – as close as they are to ATL you’d think they’d be more of a powerhouse program than they are.

You may be right about it not being the job it once was.

But they have had some awesome players in the last decade and a half. AJ Green. Hines Ward. Knowshon Moreno. Champ Bailey. Charles Johnson. Randy McMichael. Richard Seymour. Matthew Stafford. Marcus Stroud.

They have a nice stadium and a “good” fanbase. I don’t see a reason why they shouldn’t come very close to a conference title once every four or five years.

I’m not sure what the key to that job is: keeping the Florida schools and the SEC/ACC from poaching your in-state talent, or poaching plenty of talent from Florida.

KF and Co. just have no answer for a Fitzgerald coached Northwestern team. Or maybe, there is no answer for a Fitzgerald coached Northwestern team, when it comes to Iowa.

But I couldn’t go to bed. I kept thinking of that fucking Northwestern Wildcat program and what a pain they’ve been. I thought about how in 2007, one of our worst teams of the decade lost to PSU and ISU, but beat Northwestern. So I got back out of bed, and watched…and watched….and watched.

I am here to say that I was wrong. I didn’t think these guys could do it (coaches to the players) against a team that has caused us so much heartache. But they did. They had a Pittsburgh-esque 4th quarter. Again.

Now I’m going back to bed. I’ve been up for pretty much 24 hours and I’m tired and a little drunk. I think. I don’t know. I may have dozed off for a bit here and there.

But don’t start criticizing just for its own sake. I don’t think I did that (in a smug or self-satisfied way). I just said that Ole Miss isn’t very good, and that while Richardson is good, he may not be Ricky-Williams-reincarnate.

Ok

(1) Yes, Trent Richardson is good. Incredibly good. He was arguably Alabama’s best RB last year, and that was with the reigning Heisman winner on the team

(2) Ole Miss’ defense is not good, probably not even decent. But neither is ours. Well, ours maybe has the possibility of becoming decent, but we’re not there yet, after all we made Steele Jantz look like a good QB. So perhaps you shouldn’t be so quick to jump down the throats off other teams’ shortcomings.

(3) You’re really going to make the argument that there’s no smugness in the following?

I get the feeling Ole Miss would have trouble tackling drunk, hot chicks who were saying "Rebs rule!"

I suspect both of you have a broken smug muffler

But so do I. Why fight about it?

I spent half my life's earnings on wine, women & song. The other half I wasted.

Oh, I'll freely admit that I am too often a smug, condescending son-of-a-bitch

Big whoop, want to fight about it?

You're right, I should have called it a smug catalytic converter

It’s on, Patty Tanninger! (sp?)

I was kind of trying to be absurdly funny.

But it may have come off as smug. Or dumb.

My bad.

Can we talk about how seriously DRUNJ Bernie Kosar was for those interviews?

Shocking that the U never hired him to coach.

To anyone still here,

that was reading the game thread here at BHGP,

how much was the new “tigerhawk bat-signal on the water tower” discussed?

Congrats on the Win!!

That was one hell of a 4th Q effort! Wish us PSU’ers some luck against them next week too!

What makes me even happier is that they made SURE he was healthy before letting him play

And that he IS healthy. Its great that he can play football, but I would rather see the kid go on to have a long, happy, healthy life if his heart issue had been such that he should not be out there.

Polish Hat

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but one thing I noticed was that CJ was in an awful lot later in the game (before it was decided) as a TE. Don’t know if this means his blocking has improved enough or the coaches just said “fuck it, he gives us an option none of the other TEs do”, but it was nice to see him in the game. More so because he was able to make some blocks
