Talked with a kid on the wrestling team yesterday and he had this to share:
-McDonough weighed in around 130 this week. He's not looking to switch to 133.
-Mike Kelly (157/165 last year) is attempting to drop weight to contend for 149 this year.
-Nate Moore will be shooting for 165
-Mike Evans (174 last year) is attempting to drop to 165
What this means... Well, as previously stated, McDonough will be at 125 this year. There were certainly a few questions about whether he'll make the jump to 133. As it stands, though, he's far and away the preseason favorite at 125. It also sounds like we've got guys who are willing to cut weight (and lots of it) to make the lineup. 149 will probably be a battle between Carew and Mike Kelly. 157 is all but St. John's. 165 will likely be between Nate Moore and Mike Evans (if he can make weight). This implies that 174 has been locked up by Ethan Lofthouse, which is good to hear. He had ups and downs last year - maybe he's finally starting to make solid gains and improve his consistency.
In other news - open practice on Saturday at 10:30 in the wrestling room. Be there. Get sweaty watching others sweat. It's free, and the football game doesn't start until the evening.
Iowa is ranked #2 in the preseason Intermat polls. Whoop-de-doo. Preseason polls mean nothing.
