BLACK HEART GOLD PODCAST 48: HOOPS

Yes, there are fires in Ann Arbor and State College, and yes, there was football still being played in New Orleans, but for the sake of Iowa athletics, this is the first week of Big Ten basketball.  And with Jacobi out sick, I talked with the only man who talks to fast for two hosts, our old friend Justin VanLaere of Hawkeye Nation and Storminspank's Hawkeye Ramblings.  There wasn't any real form to this -- like just about every other podcast we've ever done -- so it sounds a bit random.  But I think it's all in there.

I think much needs to be said about

Iowa’s effort and ability to be in a position to WIN against #2 OSU last night. Without that 13-0 run OSU went on. Iowa was playing very well. Much in part to the efforts of the Basa-viour! Great game. Watched a lot of it while flipping between the Sugar bowl. If we play like we did last night in the majority of Big10 games…we will come away winners more often than not. Sullinger is an exceptional player and not every team in the B10 has a player like him. Cannot say enough about Basabe though. double double AND 6 blocks. So nice to see REAL hope back in Iowa basketball.

Aside from the whole not winning thing,

I couldn’t be happier with last night’s game. No Eric May, gossamer-thin depth at PG, and against a very, very good great team. Regardless of final W-L record, this is going to be a fun season.

Been out of the loop a bit.

What does the “fires” line refer to? I get the RichRod firing (assumed that’s what you meant for Ann Arbor, but what about State College (do you mean people freaking about JoePa?)?
Those are my guesses. Correct me if I’m wrong, please.

The only big news out of State College is the possible transfer of Rob Bolden.

There are, of course, lots of people acting like it’s just another sign of the apocalypse.

And JoePa's refusal to grant his release.

Or has that changed? Or was it just #TwitterRumors bullshit to begin with?

No, it seems pretty accurate.

Had heard about the transfer and the coach thing...

…but I hadn’t heard about the refusal. That’s funny. The transfer thing has been getting out of control for a little while now. It’s like these college kids think they’re free agents of something (the one thing keeping me watching college sports is the lack of free movement between teams- – I hate free agency in the pros, and I hate not knowing who will be on your team next month… like when the homerun hero from last week switches teams mid-season, for more money, and then you have to cheer against him- – it just sucks).
And often these kids leave thinking they need to. Sometimes not being released can be the best thing for a(n) 18/19 year old. I bet Brinson would have liked to have his decision back about mid-october (FWIW, I don’t know everything that went into his decision- – he mentioned family, so maybe it isn’t a great example, but you get the idea). These kids, and what they think they need, or have been told they need, can be their own worst enemies.

Not to mention Cato & Coleman & Moses &...

That's possible.

But it’s also looking at it from a slightly selfish, Iowa-fan perspective where playing time was the only thing that mattered in their decisions.

I think most kids leave for reasons beyond playing time.

Or where playing time is at least just one part of the situation.

And, frankly, maybe one kid out of twenty whose release is denied is going to wind up changing his mind and realize he was making a rash decision and that staying is the best idea. It’s not as if there’s no consequence to transferring for the kids — they have to uproot themselves, move away from friends/teammates, lose a year of eligibility (which can be mitigated in some cases by a redshirt year, but not always). I don’t think this is something they decide to do over one bad weekend. If a kid wants to leave and you decide to deny his release to try and keep him, more often than not it’s going to end badly.

Well, that...

and rumors of mass transfers and the possible departure of several coaches if Tom Bradley gets the Pitt or UConn jobs. Is it all overblown and hyperbolic? Sure. Will the reality probably amount to far less drama? Yeah, probably. But that’s the nature of the beast. Iowa fans are well-versed in mass hysteria that turns out to be excessive. But it doesn’t make the mass hysteria part any crazier — or less real in the moment.

Because Penn State has always run basketball on the cheap. “They make a profit, we’re in Central Pennsylvania, who cares.” There are boosters to pay for Cael Sanderson. There aren’t any for basketball.

Ed has improved the program from the horrible depths of despair under Jerry Dunn, but the team still sucks and we’re never going to make the tournament under his reign.

P.S. In 1993, when Penn State began playing basketball in the Big Ten, our head coach was Bruce Parkhill. His assistants were Ed DeChellis and Jerry Dunn. That’s all you really need to know about Penn State basketball.

It seems like PSU is wasting talent

They are the most veteran team in the Big Ten (per KenPom), with one of the most talented PGs in the Big Ten. Yet Dechelis gets nothing out of them.

Interesting that Iowa is the only school that scout.com says hasn't offered Carter

http://iowa.scout.com/a.z?s=8&p=8&c=1&nid=5135930

The game last night was just awesome to watch.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

Did Iowa show him early interest?

From an article I just read, he seems to have a TON of buzz right now, and if Iowa wasn’t in on the ground floor (like with Marcus Coker), it seems hard to imagine them as favorites.

Speaking of: last night, watching, I couldn’t help but think, “Wow, could you imagine this coaching staff with just plain better players and better athletes?” Carter is that. That’s scary.

Whoever said, I agree about Marble. He has a legitimate shot at an "All Big Ten" honor somewhere down the line.

Before last night, I questioned Basabe’s ultimate potential because, at times, he just looks really awkward (when he runs, when he shoots those floaters). But he definitely showed really good potential. I’d say his ceiling is as an NBA prospect. Whether he gets there…

Right now, Marble is good at a lot of things, but he doesn’t seem to stand out at anything (except not turning it over). But he seems slow and deliberate. If Iowa actually had a second PG, I’d love to see a starting line up of Cartwright, Gatens, Marble, Basabe, Cole with saidPG, May, McCabe and Brommer off the bench. They could still run that, but meh. If he can improve everything, or make something else stand out completely, he’s a legitimate prospect.

Damn, I’m impressed with how well Cole has played lately. His rebounds have been great since Northern Iowa and he’s now scored double figures 3 straight games. 14 against Sullinger and Lauderdale, HUGE size, is a great sign to me. It’s sorta interesting because nothing in the builds (or “names”) of Cole or Basabe scream “awesome front court guy”, but together, they’ve started to put together a legitimate frontcourt.

Ken Pomeroy's metics have Iowa ranked 63rd.

That seems about how they’re playing right now. Considering they were… I think, in the 80’s a couple of weeks, showing improvement is good.

They were 72 before the Ohio State game

Nothing like moving up 9 spots after a home loss.

booo...

that deflates my “steady improvement” theory. but yeah, losing closely to the “number 1” team will always make your metric ratings better.

I still agree with your premise

The team is getting better each time out. There’s no doubt about it.

Iowa was at 120 earlier in the year… although KenPom is sort of thwarted early on too.

You right, though, Iowa is on the rebound. Improving.

Excellent point about big men developing positively at Iowa for the first time in over a decade

And with the demographics of our Upper Midwest stomping grounds, this would be excellent for our recruiting in the future. Looking forward to a team that has effective big men, I miss me some Jess Settles and Greg Brunner action.

It's going to be key

If Iowa lands someone like Woodbury, the staff will need to work with him a lot. Ton of potential, but will need a staff that can develop.

Alford/Noodles did a pretty decent job getting Erek Hansen developed and Reiner was on his way until he was injured his senior year. Other than that, it’s been tough sledding for bigs.
