Wegher headed to Oklahoma

[Ed. Note: Once again, please do not copy and paste the ENTIRE TEXT of an article.  That's plagiarism and we don't allow it.  If there isn't enough text for a proper FanPost, make it a FanShot. -- Ross]

It was only a matter of time before he found a new home.  Apparently he will be facing Iowa State again next year, but wearing a new uniform:

Dakota Dunes, S.D. - Former Iowa running back Brandon Wegher is set to enroll at the University of Oklahoma.

Fuck him?

I mean, I don’t really dislike the guy, but I created (probably falsely) a soft spot in my heart. I thought he would have been smart to stay in school and deal with his family issues while getting a free education at a good school, but I respected his decision, thinking it was based on wanting to be closer to his girlfriend and his kid.

Since that doesn’t seem to be case, fuck it.

I distance myself from the personal stories of pro athletes because… well, I’ve learned not to make them personal heroes. It’s always given me more satisfaction, though, to follow the growth of adolescents, remembering my own days in those struggles. Still, boooooo.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

There's your problem.
thinking it was based on wanting to be closer to his girlfriend and his kid.

Again, we never really knew what his issues were, nor why exactly he wanted to transfer away. There have been lots (and lots) of rumors (and, no, we’re not going to dredge them up now).

It didn’t work out for him at Iowa and that’s a shame. It’s a little unfortunate that he kind of left the team in the lurch during fall practice, but I obviously don’t know the details of his situation so I’m not going to judge him too harshly.

And I certainly don’t know why he sat out and then transferred. But something about his going to Oklahoma just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Wegher is now rated a unanimous 5 stars no matter where he plays for Oklahoma. Yup, he’s even a 5 star kicker now that he left Iowa.

by Eyeheartfreedumb on Jan 14, 2011 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

He can't play against ISU next year.

He has to sit out a year due to transfer rules. So by the time he’s eligible to play (in 2012), it will have been two years since he last played a snap.

It's time enrolled full-time at a university.

Time playing football doesn’t matter.

I would almost guarantee he would be going to Nebraska if they weren’t moving to the Big Tweleven.

Pretty sure that doesn't matter.

The clock on the transfer year sit-out starts when you transfer and go to your new school, not before.

He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining when he’s able to play in 2012. He can use a redshirt year for 2010 or 2011 (doesn’t really matter which one), but hes going to lose a year of eligibility no matter what.

I should say, I dont' know for sure as my transfer situations were different.

I think it’s from when he was released from his scholarship of his last team. Not when he starts at the new one. Like, he could go to a community college/JUCO for a year and not have to sit out another year at UO. I’m guessing he was still on scholarship this past semester, but of course, I don’t know that for sure.

Yes, he could do that. You never have to sit out a year if you transfer down a level. You always have to sit out a year if you transfer up a level or within the same level (unless you can get a waiver from the NCAA). But, yes, I guess I should say that the clock starts when he leaves Iowa not necessarily when he joins Oklahoma.

I’m guessing he was still on scholarship this past semester, but of course, I don’t know that for sure.

Of course, just the mention of “Iowa” and “State” in the same phrase kind of made me want to vomit.

Of course, UNI has had 3 names: ISTC (Iowa State Teachers College), SCI (State College of Iowa), and University of Northern Iowa.

"Over it" in what sense?

That he is still a talent who will play somewhere else than here for reasons we won’t ever really know? I’d say no.

That it truly is a private issue and it seems illogical for him not to continue here unless there were some significant things we simply won’t ever know? I’d say yes. We still do respect private issues and the prerogative that they be kept that way, as well as the fact that this kid lost a lot that he worked hard for until last year’s events, whatever they were. At a baseline level, I think we still trust that some level of logic and sense figured into the decision. Also, going to OU and considering the warm relationship between Stoops and Ferentz, there may have been some reaching out between them, and possibly Wegher and/or his father, to get the kid back on track. Ferentz has always cared about his guys, even after they are gone, and I have the sense that it may have played a role in this.

I'd throw a couple of bucks down on him never playing running back

or safety for that matter, for Bob Stoops. Not a lot, but some. The truth is that offense might seem more suited to his “in space” game, but by the end of last year I saw Wegher as a change of pace running back who could bounce, not fast enough to live outside or big enough to pound inside.

At OU he might end up being the slowest RB they have. They love to recruit super fast short RBs or 6’ 2" 215 lbs. super athletic RBs who look like McNutt with smaller hips.

by mikein on Jan 14, 2011 7:55 AM CST reply actions

I don't understand why anyone would be angry at this kid for going to Norman.

Why would he want to go to some tiny school and pass up the opportunity to compete with D1 talent and earn a degree from a major university? No one is completely sure as to why he left Iowa, but it’s not as if he’s transferring to rival for the opportunity to beat the Hawkeyes.

Between the disdain for Wegher’s transfer decision and the vitriol that DJK received for wanting to wear an Iowa helmet in whatever showcase game he’s participating in, I’m completely blown away by some fan’s ability to hold a grudge. These are such petty things to “hate” someone for, especially considering both players busted their ass for the Hawkeyes while they were here and have never, to my knowledge, said anything to disparage the University, or the program.

I guess it's because

we could use him? I’m ‘angry’ he’s going to OU, I guess. If he wants to continue his D1 education why not back in an environment that loves him? It just feels fishy, or smells of something, I don’t know. Kirk said he hoped that Brandon would come back and re-join the team, so for him to walk away from open arms seems like flipping us the bird.

And what’s this about DJK? I tried to google DJK wanting to wear an Iowa helmet and couldn’t find anything. He’s not on the Seniors Bowl roster…

by Grixxly on Jan 14, 2011 12:41 PM CST up reply actions

He's playing in some other showcase game. I'd never heard of it. It was a small Twitter mess earlier this week, I think.

I just can’t blame Wegher for not coming back. If he wanted to be here, he have never left. If he doesn’t feel like he belongs in Iowa City, then so be it. I hope he starts at Oklahoma and does extremely well. Sure I’d have preferred for him to play for the Hawkeyes, but his situation may not make it real simple to live in Iowa City.

I dunno. Just a rant I felt like having, I guess.

I hope Wegher does OK at OK (yuk-yuk).

But, if he becomes the next Adrian Peterson, then I will be oft-reminded of what could have been at Iowa. If he just becomes a solid contributor at OK (like, 50 to 80 ypg), then that’s cool. I hope he doesn’t disappear on the bench or something worse, because that would be rather sad.

I didn't realize I was in such a minority.

But I hope he does become the next Adrian Peterson. Wegher showed he was willing to come to Iowa, and he did, but he screwed it all up and didn’t feel right about coming back. So, whatever. Maybe Iowa’s arms weren’t as open as we think they were. So, like I said, whatever. He didn’t say anything offensive about Iowa or the program, and he’s been laying low lately. He just hasn’t given me a reason to hate him or even dislike him other than leaving Iowa, and there were obviously extenuating circumstances where that’s concerned. I’m just glad he didn’t go to Little Brother or one of the major jerk-off schools (cheers, Auburn!). OU with Stoops the Calmer at the helm is a fine choice, if not a little academically unchallenging. That all being said, I don’t know whether BW has the talent to succeed at a school like Oklahoma, particularly after a year away from football, and presumably from world-class trainers like those at Iowa. I truly hope he finds success, though; the more, the better.

So what if I tailgate to the NPR jazz station?

by hkobb7 on Jan 15, 2011 12:33 PM CST up reply actions

It would seem that the choice to leave was BW's.

While KF may not have been as lenient on his rules as some would like him to be, it really appears as though it was Wegher who skipped practice.

I think that is why some Iowa fans are unhappy. With Wegher’s ability, all he had to do was “play by the rules” and he most likely would have become a star at Iowa (or at least would have been on that road until AIRBHG sunk his/her teeth in).

And, again, there are so many Iowa fans who feel like a scholly and a spot on the Hawkeyes is a dream come true. So they are going to react negatively when they perceive that somebody has had that opportunity and has somehow rejected it.

I probably lean toward those sentiments, but I don’t begrudge BW an opportunity elsewhere, especially since Iowa will probably never (for the foreseeable future) play OU except in a possible bowl game.

At the same time, if Tim Dwight had left Iowa after one year, I wouldn’t love to see him go to Florida State and catch for 1400 yards a year. It would have been a painful reminder of what could have been.

by WaterlooChazz on Jan 15, 2011 12:46 PM CST up reply actions

It's fairly clear Brandon Wegher wasn't kicked out of practice.

But we do know he became a father in November, which is the home stretch of the regular season, with three road games in four weeks. That and bowl prep makes it wholly unlikely that he’d even be around very much for the first two months of his first (I’m assuming) child’s life. If that isn’t reason to take a year’s sabbatical, then I don’t know what is. As for Wegher’s not returning, we don’t know what went on behind the scenes. We don’t know whether he felt comfortable coming back to a coach he’d left months earlier, or whether KF made him feel as comfortable in doing that as we all seem to think he did. What’s the point in him coming back if he didn’t want to be here?

So what if I tailgate to the NPR jazz station?

I certainly understand your points.

I was only trying to explain what I thought the mentality of several-to-many Iowa fans might be on the BW situation.

If it was as simple as BW taking a year off to be with the fam, then why wouldn’t KF let him come back, and why would BW feel apprehensive about it?

Of course, all my questions are not answerable without info from BW or KF.

I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.

Jesus H. Christ. Learn to punctuate your heartless personal attacks.

Lay off the kid. It’s football. Last I checked, family > football. If BW can make it big in the future, and maybe even go to the NFL, then that’s great, as far as I’m concerned. It’s a comeback story for the ages, almost reminiscent of Shonn Greene. Of course, Greene was awesome because he came back to Iowa, but Brandon Wegher is a “bastard” because he’s taking his talents elsewhere, perhaps to a school where he feels he will perform better and not detract from the team’s performance by being a distraction.

Reminds me of Mustain from Arkansas transferring to USC a few years ago.

A highly-touted in-state recruit makes a big splash in his freshman year, then transfers to a top program where he is unlikely to see nearly as much playing time. Kind of leaves you scratching your head. But these guys are young, immature, and brimming with self-confidence. I’m sure that in both cases, they have/had little doubt that they would soon land at the top of the depth chart. I suppose you have to possess that kind of confidence to succeed in this sport but sometimes a dose of humility and practicality might not hurt.

For Arkansas, things worked out pretty well, as they soon landed Mallett (a former in-state HS phenom who transferred back after spending a year at Michigan). Iowa knows it has a stud RB in the Werewolf, who dominated the Insight Bowl, so the future looks bright. Even those fans who were holding out hope for Return of the Wegher are now resolved to turn the page.

Arky had to go through a year between Mustain and Mallett (Mallett had to sit out for his redshirt year), and a coaching change.

We are in a better position, despite the work of AIRBHG this year.
