Defending Iowa Fans

I am not the type to rant and write out FanPosts but something from little brothers fans over in Ames is really driving me nuts this year. I have heard this complaint in years past but this year it seems to be really getting out of control. The argument from ISU fans is that most Iowa fans are not actually Iowa grads and therefore have no right to support the sports teams of the University. This honestly makes no sense to me and reeks of jealousy. This is much like saying because none of us in Iowa live in a city that hosts a professional football team we should not be allowed to follow the NFL. "How dare you like the Bears, you don't live in Chicago!" should be the rallying cry coming from Ames as Chicago fans gather to watch a Bears game. The truth of the situation is that Iowans who didn't go to college  want to follow a program that represents the State they live in. This leaves them with 3 choices if they are looking at the national level and the choice is clear. I see no reason why someone who grew up watching the Hawks and bleeds black and gold but chose to go into the workforce after high school cannot be a fan. What ISU fans really are saying when they get angry about all of our fans is, "Wow, I wish I was born into a family that followed THAT program." I get it, it sucks that you were born into a family that chose to follow an embarrassing failure of a football program, but stop trying to ruin the fun for everyone else. On Iowa and Go Hawks!

Well said, sir, well said.

I had the same thoughts earlier. Actually, I think you’re too easy on the ISU fans in the pro football analogy. According to the “logic” of the Clones fans, unless you played for the Chicago Bears you can’t be a fan of the team. Which, of course, is ridiculous. It’s just a reflexive way for them to avoid the reality that their program is an afterthought nationally, within their own conference, and in the state.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, ISU fans should play a riveting game of Hide-and-Go-Fuck-Off.

Having been around it in its natural habitat for a few years now

I understand the sentiment but I think it’s not always easy to explain.

Iowa is, no matter how many billboards are erected, the Hawkeye State. With no pro sports teams to speak of, the University of Iowa pretty much is the identity of football for the state of Iowa. It is, in essence, the default college football team for the state of Iowa. You do not become a Cyclone fan unless you are born in a small area around Ames, or you ended up attending school there, because there is no reason to become a Cyclone fan otherwise.

Those of us who went to Iowa State realize that ISU is not going to be a conference title contender anytime soon, and realistically through the next few years scraping together six win seasons is going to be considered a “win” for us. But despite not having the best football teams, most of us still have pretty fond memories of our time in Ames, just as most people have favorable memories of wherever they went to college.

In my experience, most U of I grads focus on ripping on the football team itself. The “default” fan, on the other hand, is more likely to start ad hominem attacks on the University itself. A University that even to the chagrin of this lifetime Hawk fan, becomes a part of your identity.

I don’t mind it when the BHGP crew makes Jamie Pollard seem like Gomer Pyle, it’s funny and frankly the guy doesn’t do himself any favors. But I do get pissed off when people who drank themselves out of Kirkwood after a semester and a half start talking shit about the University itself.

I have the same fashion sense as Tom Arnold.

by CyHawk on Sep 10, 2010 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Understandable

But I think the point was that even if a Hawk fan doesn’t mention ISU as in the actual university itself and only the football team (which is what pretty much every college football fan talks about), this is still a default argument for ISU fans. I wouldn’t want anyone ripping on IC or Iowa as a university, but the football team is fair game. If someone was ripping on the Hawks and I didn’t have a valid comeback about football, I don’t automatically resort to rips about percentages of fans that went to school at the opposing institution.

So while I agree with your sentiment about drop-outs from Kirkwood talking shit about a respectable college when they nothing about it, I can’t help but feel this is simply a worn-out and completely irrelevant argument most of the time it is brought up by Cyclone fans.

I think one part of this equation...

that I’ve repeatedly heard from Iowa fans, and that rightfully should tick off ISU fans, are the meanest cracks about veterinary medicine. Anything along the lines of “Baaaah means no” and so forth is just too easy, and if I were an ISU fan, it would tick me off too. Yes, science regarding animals is an important part of ISU, but is it even more than 25% to 30% of ISU?

On the other hand, ISU has the worst overall history in football of the BXII schools (maybe with the exception of KSU or Baylor). So, you are going to take crap about your football team.

Personally, I am guilty of being a bit too vocal with my criticism of ISU with my relatives who went there. But, you will never see me wearing a T-shirt with truly vulgar “humor” against ISU (the worst on that always stuck out to me was a shirt with a picture of Herky forcing Cy to perform an adult act on him. The “ISU girls aren’t trash” shirt is clever, and therefore, still permissible). There is a balance to be struck, and Hawk fans should probably try to find that balance more often. And the most vocal ISU fans should probably stop making absurd arguments. (CyHawk, you are one of the good ones, you don’t make crap arguments).

Finally, I have only attended a few games at Trice, and I think it is an OK place, but I don’t like it as much as new, renovated Kinnick. I also took time to spend an evening in Ames about two years ago (not for an athletic event). It appears to be a pretty nice campus, and I’m sure that their academics have plenty to offer. ISU is not a bad university. I can’t say it is some great place, because I haven’t seen a lot of colleges/u’s. But OK-to-nice.

I actually think that ISU has never won a conference title

They had chances to win the North in 2004 and 2005. Both times they controlled their own destiny going into the final game, and both times they failed to secure a win.

KSU has actually gone to a BCS game!

Please note

and maybe I should have been more clear on this, that I am not knocking ISU as an educational institution, nor even the entire fanbase. Instead, my animus is directed at the holier-than-thou ISU fans that scream I cannot be a fan because I didn’t go there. I grew up in Coralville and Cedar Rapids; my parents, my sister, my brother-in-law-to-be, two of my grandparents, 9 aunts and uncles and 6 of my cousins attended or are attending Iowa (many with multiple degrees therefrom). Clearly, I come from an Iowa family, yet according to a number of Clones fans, becasue I went to Georgetown, I am nothing but a bandwagoner because I didn’t go to Iowa. And that is the attitude that pisses me off.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

I didn't attend Iowa

Wanted to go somewhere else for undergrad and they didn’t let me in for grad school. I don’t think I am going to follow either of my school’s athletic programs – I didn’t know my grad school even had a football team until after I graduated and small liberal arts college football from Iowa doesn’t get much national coverage, even if “The Ocho” comes into existence. I was born into a Hawkeye family and continue that tradition to this day.

The person who collects booster money and the money from ticket sales doesn’t give one rat’s ass about where the person attended college. I would guess Iowa collects more money from non-grads than ISU does for their whole program – this is completely speculative on my part but looking at the budgets from both schools and Iowa’s athletics are completely self funded leads me to believe this.

You're totally right on...

My brother and I (both George Mason grads due to locality after military service) are members of the DC-area I-Club. After going to the I-Club meetings and gamewatchs for a couple years, we discovered that most of the attendees did not graduate, and fewer attended, the University of Iowa. But we love the Hawks and the university and the fairest land of the West – the great State of Iowa.

Interweb message boards can give a distorted picture of a fanbase.

If you’re a Hawkeye fan who also likes ISU or vice versa, you’re probably less motivated to go online and post comments a la “whoever wins, I hope both teams have a good season and nobody gets seriously hurt.” Hatred is more entertaining and more conducive to obsessive message boarding.

I think the type of folks that Swarley mentioned are far more common IRL than you might guess from online interactions, especially in such a laid-back place like Iowa. Any Cyclone-bashing that goes beyond the playing field (i.e., all that juvenile “cow college” stuff) annoys me almost as much as the elitist TavernHawk/TrailerHawk bullshit you see on ISU fansites. They don’t hand out AAU memberships for underwater basket-weaving, and Iowans should be proud that our little state is home to two such outstanding universities.

Here's the deal:

A fanbase that extends beyond the university community is a hallmark of all major, successful programs. Do Cyclone fans really think all those 80,000-110,000 fans filling the stadiums of LSU, Florida, Bama, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Penn State, etc. are all alumni? Of course they don’t – rather, they just can’t stand the fact that Iowa is more comparable in stature to those programs than to ISU and their 45,000 attendance, no tv time, December bowl game, Big XII North ilk.

Don’t hate us because we’re beautiful.

That’s exactly what I bring up when I argue this point with an ISU grad/fan I know. It’s not our fault that they can’t garner a following outside the 10% of their alumni base that actually roots for them. On top of that… how many farmers do you know that root for Iowa? I know quite a few.

Went with my dad (Who has some of the cheaper season tickets in the north end zone.) to games growing up. I joined the Navy and did five deployments over 20 years. When at sea, I was at the mercy of what ever news the military happened to give me. Well guess what, unless some town was under water, the only news from home that was about the Hawks.

Since that was my only tie to home,(Beyond 3 week news papers mailed from my dad. Remember the Big Peach/) the Hawks have a special place in my heart. (Does anyone else tear up watching the swarm take the field?)

….and these guys think I haven’t earned the right to be a Hawk fan. Pfffffft.

But I grew up 15 minutes from IC, going to football and basketball games on frequent occasions. We would get 2 season tickets for each, then my brother and I would have to split up the games as to who would get to go with our dad. The Hawk love is ingrained in my DNA. This is why ISU will always be Little Brother

Iowa is the popular kid at school, quarterback of the football team, prom king, and sleeping with the hot chicks, while ISU is sitting in the corner trying to get people to look at them and their new macaroni picture they just made.

Simply put, Iowa athletics are larger, generate more money, and are more successful. With that success comes more attention, and therefore generates more fans, whether they went to the school or not.

This whole arguement explains why the Big12 almost imploded.

If other schools in that conference believe this theory than that explains why Nebraska and Texas wanted out so badly. Maybe they looked at their fan base and realized that a great majority of it came from people other than graduates. Knowing this and not wanting to be ridiculed any longer they made a run for it. Or in Texas’ case, ran until the money pulled them back in. For now. And the future demise of the Big12 will come in a few years, when Texas figures out that the scorn of other conference members’ graduates only policy is too much to handle. They leave the conference realizing the disgrace they have bestowed upon the Big12, and beg forgiveness of conferences like the Pac10 or SEC.

Rock lawn = the rock land scaping (this is a desert no grass)around the buildings and Barracks. It had to be raked and manicured nicely just like a grass lawn would be or you could be the SNCO (Staff Non Commissioned Officers = E6 thru E9 ) would flip out because there was nothing better to do.

TQ = Marine Corps Air Field in Iraq’s Anbar Providence, where all the good stuff was because the “wingers, aka POG’s (Personell other than Grunts)” as us “grunts” (Infantry or any Marine with a MOS = millitary occupation specialty starting in 03xx) got to be stationed with all the finer things in life, or Iraq such as real matresses, metal utensils, running showers, and semi real food!

Did you get the memo on the correct pronunciation? Or were you there before anyone really cared how his name was pronounced? I know they’ve had a hard time getting the older troops to say it the correct way, and a lot of the locals don’t seem to know either.

No it's the correct pronunciation of the guy's name.

People have been saying wrong for so long that they’re trying to honor him by saying his name correctly. The locals (from what I hear) and some of the older military folks are having trouble with the change.

From Iowa City

Grew up in Iowa City and after high school just felt that I needed to get away. Grew up a huge Hawk fan though, went to every football and basketball game from about 1986-1999 since my Dad had (and still has) season tickets. Now that I’m living in DC, I’ve found a huge group of Iowa fans to watch the games with every Saturday at a local watering hole that has taken to liking us – free shots after Iowa TD’s is a nice perk. Anyway, I also know an ISU grad or two that give me a lot of shit for being such a big Hawkeye fan (you didn’t even go there! blah blah). So, yeah, this thread basically sums up everything for me – thanks for posting. I’ve been lurking here for ages and ages, but never posted. This seemed like an appropriate opening post.

PS: I actually went to undergrad at another B10 institution and when they play I still root for Iowa. Does that make sense? My friends from undergrad really give me a f’ing hard time but I’m kind of over that too. Anyone else have the same experience?

by hawkeyedc on Sep 9, 2010 4:38 PM CDT reply actions

I can understand

why people would give you a hard time for rooting against your alma mater when they play the Hawks but the thing about being a sports fan is that you get to choose who you like. I went to Iowa and graduated from there but I think if I went to Minny or something I would still be the diehard hawk fan that i am today. Like I said though the great thing about sports is that you can choose your teams and as long as you stick with the teams you chose people should respect that.

I don't think a lot of people outside Iowa

realize the importance of the Hawkeyes to us growing up here. It is different than other teams and I’m not sure exactly why. I looked at going to ISU, among other colleges, but I still would’ve cheered for the Hawks as my primary team (and my alma mater second)

by ClaybornSmash on Sep 9, 2010 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I can relate

I’ve been an Iowa fan my entire life, but I went to Syracuse for undergrad. When they played Iowa a few years back I still rooted for the Hawks. Part of me was kind of glad the first game of the home and home went to double OT with “The Stand” and all that. So that I felt like the game was epic enough to do justice to both of my teams. But there was another larger part of me that was thinking “Why are we in overtime with these suckmonkeys? We should be winning by 40!”

Of course it doesn’t hurt that Syracuse football is God awful. If they were a better team I might be more conflicted. But then I would root for Iowa if they ever played Syracuse in basketball too. That’s how I know I’m a Hawkeye. I prefer Iowa basketball over Syracuse basketball, and if you think about it, that makes no sense at all.

not unique to ISU

I went to Coe for a variety of reasons, but have been a lifelong Hawkeye fan. Not going to that school doesn’t prohibit me from being a fan, or make me any less of a fan. I live in Dallas now and see the same crap with A&M and UT. The A&M fans are feeling sorry for themselves and came up w/ the slogan “I’m an Aggie b/c I got a degree, you’re a Longhorn b/c you bought a t-shirt.” Same thing ISU is playing here, and frankly it looks pathetic.

I'm a UNI grad...

as are many members of my family. Sort of makes fiscal sense to go to college in Cedar Falls if you grew up in Waterloo. However, my grandfather attended (not sure if he graduated) Iowa. If he didn’t graduate, then none of my grandparents have college degrees. My dad went to UNI, and did some graduate work at Iowa.

Bottom line, we root for the Hawks. Sure, we root for UNI also, and are conflicted when they match up. But, if you live in Iowa, you almost have to root for the Hawks.

In fairness, I would probably also root for ISU (when they don’t play Iowa or UNI), but as long as they employ Pollard, it holds me back from supporting them in any tangible way.

All it really takes is one visit to Kinnick or Carver while the Hawks are even doing OK, and you have to respect Iowa and their fans.

Finally, I can’t wait for the day when Iowa wins big (maybe a national title) in football or basketball. It will feel like the whole state won. Why? Because the screen will say “Iowa: 20XX National Champions.”

every time they play nebraska or frankly anyone else besides Iowa, I think “you know, I hope they win” but then I’m quickly reminded by their miserable excuses for fans why I hate Iowa State. I never see them supporting Iowa outside of the Cy-Hawk game. It’s always “I hope they lose. I hate Iowa. blah blah blah.” I don’t mean to generalize as I know there are a lot of Iowa State fans that are level headed. But the ones that aren’t really really kill any respect I have for ISU. I have an older brother that goes to Iowa State.

Our family is complicated in sports, my dad is an Iowa State grad, my mom has been to every school in existence (including ISU) but mainly cheers for Iowa, and my step dad is Missouri. My bro decided to go to ISU because of their engineering program and instate tuition because my dad lives there (were from KC). Pretty understandable. He’s a big ISU fan and makes this argument all the time. He actually roots for the Hawks but dislikes some fans. He even went to the Orange Bowl with us and cheered pretty loud. So in return we cheer for ISU when they dont play Iowa. But he ALWAYS makes this argument to me because I’m a big Iowa fan and im in high school (dont judge). IT INFURIATES ME. Anyone else have family go to ISU?

but no one in my immediate family of 6 went to Iowa except my oldest brother who went through grad school there and we are all die-hard Hawkeyes. I don’t get why you have to be an alum/attendee to be a fan. If that were so, UNC basketball would have virtually no fans compared to the number they have now. Same holds true for Duke and Texas Football.

Aside from people who chose to go elsewhere for college...

…there’s also a subset of people who grew up lifelong Hawkeye fans, but didn’t get into Iowa. And we can make fun of people who can’t get into Iowa, but be honest—you were probably friends with a couple kids like that in high school. I know I was. And I really have no patience or desire to let some ISU partisan use a cheap rhetorical trick to demean those guys’ passion for the Hawkeyes, no matter what they did after high school.

Two answers

1) Putting the screen names on the back of the shirt would be prohibitively difficult and costly. Sorry.

2) “SASH” on a BHGP shirt = Instant cease and desist from the university. That goes for all player names, the word “Hawkeye” and all variations, and if we’re not careful, “Iowa.” Whoever made the shirt you saw had the luxury of obscurity.

Iowa Alumni and Student Here

I grew up in Minnesota, in a family of Gopher and Cyclone fans, so far as college football went. I got my BA in the MInnesota State College and University System. I grew up a Gopher fan, with all the futility that comes with it. That includes a distaste for the University of Iowa’s football team, and their regular beatdowns of over-matched U of Minnesota squads.

When it came time for grad school, I chose the University of Iowa (much to some family member’s horror) because of its academic standing—sports loyalty obviously had nothing to do with it. I got my Masters here, and I am close to a PhD here.

That said, I have retained my Gopher loyalty through my years in Iowa City, and my years of holding student season tickets. I’ll be in the student stands today, cheering for Iowa State, just as I am there cheering for all of Iowa’s opponents…except Wisconsin. As a Gopher fan, I hate Wisconsin. As a Vikings fan on Sundays, I REALLY hate Wisconsin.

it’s nothing personal, obviously—many of you UI grads/Hawkeye fans will end up in Chicago or the Twin Cities, and I wouldn’t expect you to become Northwestern, Illinois, or Minnesota fans.

I have hung around this site and posted on occasion because I am a big college football fan, and living in Iowa City and attending the UI while not being a Hawkeye fan gives me a sort of “outsider on the inside” point of view.

This is as close as I’ll ever come to posting trash on here about the U of Iowa. Not just because the Gophers are stuck in suck, but because it is bad form.

This just further reinforces the point that you don’t need to be an alum to be a fan and any argument to the contrary is ignorant.

And this argument makes sense, why?

ISU has a higher percentage of alumni as fans because nobody else will cheer for them. No sane, reasonable person on any street in America would willingly choose to be a cyclown unless they had some vested interest in the school or the community. It’s the highest of honors to count the smallest percentage of grads as fans because that means people in all walks of life identify with your program. I hope the percentage of Iowa fans who are also grads is somewhere down around 1% of the fan base. That’s the ultimate compliment for the program.
