Masoli cleared by NCAA after his appeal

For those who are unaware of how this went down...here's the long and short of it:

1.)  Masoli jacked some frat guys and stole a bunch of electronics...then got run down by one of the frat guys and arrested for burglary.  He was suspended from the team for the 2010 season.  But this is Oregon...so let's be honest he would have been on the field for the Pac 10 opener.  (LaGarrette Blount/'d)

Star-divide

2.)  Over the summer while on a 1 year suspension...Masoli got busted for drug and trafficking charges.  Ooops...now even Oregon has to get rid of him.  In short...you fudd up.

3.)  Masoli graduates from Oregon and transfers to Ole Miss expecting to play under an NCAA rule that states that a player can transfer to another school without having to sit out a year as long as they have graduated and are attending the other school for academic purposes to enroll in Grad School (think Greg Paulus Duke PG/Syracuse QB).

4.)  On Monday (IIRC) the NCAA denies Masoli the right to play this year under the exception...in short they said "WTF R U Sirius".  Here is a more official version.

5.)  Today the NCAA reversed their decision after Masoli and Ole Miss's appeal.  My response "WTF R U Sirius".

This is stupid

The NCAA denied the waiver request because they said he only transferred because he was kicked off the Oregon team, not because he desperately wanted a Park and Rec masters degree from Ole Miss, which is 100% accurate.

Now they go and reverse the decision? Stupid…

I think the only thing about this is that they can't PROVE that he doesn't want that degree

and no one will ever be able to prove that until he doesn’t get the degree after he runs out of eligibility

I would think that scenarios like this...

…are exactly why the NCAA reviews each case and why this is an exemption and not a rule. If it was cut and dried…you wouldn’t have to apply for the waiver.

College football programs certainly aren’t 100% about the academics (Paulus to Syracuse was 100% determined by a guarantee of starting QB)…but they haven’t yet resorted to ignoring criminal activities in the name of football performance. This reeks of the latter.

After reading about the initial denial, I thought it actually made sense, in that he transferred (after graduating, I get it) ONLY because he was booted from the team, not for “violating team rules” but for criminal offenses. Nevertheless, what difference does the reversal actually make? It’s not like Iowa will play these mofos, nor is any other student athlete going to learn anything from this. I guess, give him his one year and move on sooner rather than later. Also, maybe he can catch lighting and beat AL, Auburn or FL, if Ole Miss even plays those guys.

.

Easily the best part of the story.

So now I feel like an idiot

After doing some fact checking…it appears that the Oregon WR who was with Masoli was the one who got run down by the frat guy. But I also found this little gem in a local news story from Oregon about the 911 call:

When asked for a suspect description, the victim told the dispatcher to simply consult the Oregon Ducks football roster.

“If you want to find the height (and) age, it’s all online. These guys are all football players,” the caller said.

Listening to the call is even better.

The guy is shocked that the dispatcher doesn’t already know these things. Quality stuff. I just wish I could remember where it was posted

Enjoy

Walford: There were two men, one’s name is Garrett Embry and the other was Masoli.
911 Operator: Who was the other one?
Walford: Masoli. I’m not…(friend in background: “Jeremiah Masoli”) Jeremiah Masoli.
Friend in background: “He fucking stole your computer?”
911 Operator: OK, can you spell his last name?
Wolfard: Garrett Embry and Jeremiah Masoli.
911 Operator: Can you spell Jeremiah’s last name?
Wolfard: M-a-s-o-l-i. Like the football player.
Wolfard: "I caught the man in the action. … They had no permission to be in the house, no permission to be in my bedroom, no permission to be with my belongings."
Wolfard: "One of them is a football player who is very easily recognizable, Jeremiah Masoli, and the other one, I know someone — is another football player whom my roommate recognizes."
Wolfard: "I was walking up the stairs and they were walking down the stairs with my possessions."

That's actually worse.

A wide receiver got run down by a frat guy? Are we talking about some guy like Scott Helverson, as in the middle aged Scott Helverson of today?

I think the reversal is right

Here’s the thing, he was suspended by a college, not the NCAA. Essentially what the first ruling did was made one school’s disciplinary action enforceable at all other schools. That doesn’t seem right to me.

Keep in mind what he was asking for...

he was asking the NCAA to exempt him from one of their rules regarding the requirement of a player to sit out a year when transferring. So essentially he was attempting to circumvent the NCAA rules by using an exemption allowed for athletes looking to further their education.

Given the facts in the case…do you think he should be given the exemption in order to further his education?

by HawKCP on Sep 3, 2010 4:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

he wasn’t looking to further his education (and I’d love to see anyone’s argument to the contrary). He transferred to Ole Miss because they needed a QB, and they just happened to offer a graduate program that wasn’t offered at Oregon.

by HeroPatriotStanzi on Sep 3, 2010 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the thing to keep in mind..

is that Masoli didn’t think up this master plan for how to get on the field this year, Ole Miss is the one that is pulling out all of the stops to desperately get him on the field. I mean I guess he could have thought up this whole scheme on his own but I am going to go out on a limb and say someone from Ole Miss had the bright idea and he is just going along with it. I mean come on.. this guy who knew he had a chance to make it into the league was stealing shit when he could wait one more year and buy it all himself.

Make no mistake

Houston Nutt is a shady, disingenuous bastard who tried to bring Masoli in then hung him out to dry when there was criticism at the start (saying something to the effect that Masoli needed them more than they needed Masoli and that this was all Masoli’s initiative). But he’s the RIGHT REVEREND so it must be ok!!
