"I don't know what feels worse than an interception... I don't know... Probably someone burning an American flag would hurt a little more, inside, than an interception. I don't know man, that'd be pretty bad."
Just Stanzi being Stanzi, via Mas Casa. Skip ahead to about a minute in for the question that prompts the quote.

To me...
nothing hurts inside worse than some opposing player burning an American flag, and then using the burning flag to corral the ball for an interception.
You know what hurts the most is the… the lack of respect. You know? That’s what hurts the most. Except for the… Except for the other thing. That hurts the most. But the lack of respect hurts the second most.

Yeah, the hair.
Stanzi, take it from this retired Green Beret Sergeant Major. Get a buzz cut. Not bald or Marine high and tight, just a crew cut. You’ll look even more like Captain America.

Now try “paint the fence.”
Now try “wax on, wax off.”
Now try “avoid Corey Wootton in the endzone.”
On a related note, this is what you see when you watch football practice at jNW:

Giggles McGoo?
Probably with the Daily Iowan or something. I probably was making the same face when I first read the quote. I think the thought of a burning American flag really does hurt Stanzi. Don’t be surprised to see Arizona fans burning American flags trying to mess with Ricky’s head.

Then, of course
Rage Against the Machine will start their concert, and everybody will realize the burning flags had nothing to do with Ricky Stanzi.

Nah, they're fighting for the same thing...
…though it doesn’t make the flag burning thing hurt less.
But he must really, really hate the V.A. because they burn thousands of flags a year, and that might be understating things.

is Richard’s patriotism genuine? those of you who are more keen to the situation might have already commented on it… and I know bhgp took off with his Orange Bowl speech last year. it’s just sometimes I feel as though he’s putting us on. or perhaps he really does tivo the the O’Reilly Factor??
by KentuckyThunderPussy on Aug 31, 2010 9:22 PM CDT reply actions
I think
He has a very strong sense of patriotism, and he loves this country, but at the same time, he isn’t so totally serious about it that he can’t have a few laughs and make it over the top. I would assume that his OB speech was fueled by adrenalin and a genuine love of country, but this is just messing with Marc and the other reporters. Another way of putting it would be that he probably thinks Team America World Police is a funny-ass movie (because it is), but the obvious satire there doesn’t prevent him from being a patriot. Also, everyone knows that real patriots don’t TiVo; they watch at ten o’clock. Derp derp.
Also, this. Definitely NSFW audio.
You see what I did there? Yeeeaaaaaahhhh.
I like how over the top poignant the "sad version" is.

Pretty sure he's serious
Don’t you remember Tyler MF Sash’s facebook post where Ricky put an American flag bandana on his dog?
Or what about the interview with one of his roommates talking about Ricky embarrassing them by being Ameristanzi when they have women over? (Someone have a link to that one?)
by KinnickNorthHawk on Sep 1, 2010 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions
It was DJK talking about the America stuff.
That doesn’t mean he’s not completely goofing. Sure he seems to love America, but the whole uber-patriot thing is so obviously him having fun.
Do you think they (the football guys) don’t all laugh about that shit? Of course they do, and they perpetuate it (and I’m sure KF doesn’t mind, cause it’s a positive light to oppose the arrests and negativity).

Hard to tell, but he seems pretty genuine with it.
The fact he has a tattoo that says Made in the USA leads me to believe it is real, however he could be playing up the “aw shucks” angle as well to try and have a little fun with the media.

KentuckyTP...
you have said some mildly controversial things in the past. And I have never joined in when others have criticized you.
BUT DON’T YOU DARE QUESTION THE PATRIOTISM OF ONE RICHARD STANZI!!! HE HAS SAVED US FROM THE EVIL NORTH KOREANS, AND HAS LED US TO OUR ONLY BCS WIN IN 5 DECADES. AND HE WILL OBVIOUSLY BE OUR PRESIDENT OR VICE PRESIDENT DEPENDING ON IF SENIORITY RULES IN THE LEMAN/STANZI TICKET IN THE FUTURE.
AND IF I HAVE TO TELL YOU AGAIN, WE’RE GONNA TAKE IT OUTSIDE AND I’M GONNA SHOW YOU WHAT IT’S LIKE! YOU UNDERSTAND ME? NOW SHUT YOUR MOUTHS OR I’LL SHUT ‘EM FOR YA, AND IF YOU THINK I’M KIDDING, JUST TRY ME. TRY ME. BECAUSE I WOULD LOVE IT!!!

For serious though,
I think Stanzi has strong patriotic feelings, and is probably expressing them to make fun of no-doubt countless number of people at UI who loathe America.
On the other hand, Stanzi also likes Twilight and that crap, so maybe he is actually very patriotic without thinking about how others will perceive it. Almost too cool for school, if you will.

Where did you come up with the...
…“to make fun of no-doubt countless number of people at UI who loathe America”?
What? Is he making fun of the foreign students from China? I don’t think you r theory is accurate. If anything he seems to understand that Americans love a patriot, and that maybe he can replace Tebow as America’s sweetheart QB (I don’t think he’s thought it through that much, but I’m pretty certain he isn’t poking at the “countless” USA-haters [which I don’t think exist] at the UI).

@EyeHeart...
If UI is anything like UNI, or any other decently-sized, non-religiously-affiliated college campus, then you have a certain amount of profs and students who think they know it all and “loathe” America. Which really means, they criticize aspects about America that most people don’t give a crap about (and some people even support).
I don’t want to get too much into politics here, and then get ban-hammered. But, college campuses tend to be more liberal than their surroundings (which is not all bad, I just think it can go a bit too far at times.)

Chuck Norris?
Bruce Lee?
Rick Stanzi?
or Bill Brasky?

We all know
he’s thinking that blue balls hurts more, but he wants a good USA quote.
Why expand the Big Ten when we could just kick Northwestern out?
Please don't kill me
but when you can see it coming from a mile away, you have to wonder if this bit is getting a little played out.
my fear is that his gets too big...
causing msnbc and fox news get ahold of it and then crackpots from both sides feel the need to comment. For example, see that cnn chic-that-looks-like-an-ugly-Bette-Midler’s quote on Tim Tebow.
Considering that Brett Morse, TMFS, and DJK
have given quotes about Stanzi’s patriotism, I don’t think it is an act or a “bit”. He just loves America and is clearly passionate about certain things without caring what others think – the wristbands are another case in point. I applaud his honesty and his sense of humor.

Chuck Norris wears Rick Stanzi underwear.
He has to be sincere with the patriotism bit. How many college kids would go around as much as he does saying, doing, wearing patriotic things. With all the “hate America” crap that goes down on college campuses these days, where else would it be coming from. Moeaki & Rick were two blackjack tables down from me at Riverside casino the day after Tony got drafted and what was Rick wearing (other than sorority girls)? Yup, an American eagle t-shirt under his unbuttoned button-up. Wasn’t drinking, wait, wasn’t gambling but having a good old americanzi time.
by blackgoldandcubbieblue on Sep 1, 2010 1:43 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
I'm beginning to think
that Ricky only owns one t-shit and it is that american eagle one. EVERYONE who runs into him has seen him in that exact same outfit (the guy from Halloween last year, after the Orange Bowl, you). Maybe Ricky isn’t so much a patriot as he’s just a slob beyond such pedestrian concerns as “having a wardrobe”.
I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.
Ya know
You could very well be right. I don’t remember what color it was. There were ALOT of sorority girls around and I just caught it out of the corner of my eye and thought it was quite appropriate. Could have been the same shirt and he could be a lazy slob. Explains the picks and why he hasn’t tried to make a tackle on them.

Anyone else see Kyle Orton in Denver's last preseason game
get jacked trying to make a tackle on James Harrison after a fumble recovery that was eventually called an incomplete pass? That was absolutely priceless.

On the other hand, if you are any NFL QB, what on earth are you doing trying to make a tackle, especially in a preseason game?
I guess not only does Orton look retarded, but he actually might be.
