Big Ten Road Trip

Me and my boys need a little help for our 16th annual college football trip this year.  We are leaving the familiar territory of the SEC and have decided to come to Big Ten Country and Iowa City for the 10/23 game against Wisconsin.  We literally will be coming from all corners of the country and need some local advice.

1) Where can we rent a nice big class A RV with satellite (a must)?

2) Where can we park that will be in the thick of the action on Saturday?  preferably starting on Thursday.

3)  Local watering holes?

4) Other must do's (tradition)

5) Tickets

Looking forward to our official big ten introduction.

You made a wise decision

Assuming you’re not a Wisconsin fan and are just coming to see a good game then you are officially the first tourist in the history of our great flat and boring state. Luckily you will be experiencing the most fun and exciting thing we have to offer: HAWKEYES FOOTBALL!!! YA WOOO GRRRRAAA HSDSKHGIAHU [smashes head through wall]…….. ok now that I’ve gained my composure I’ll do my best to help you out. I can only answer a couple though.

Not sure about 1 or 2 as I’ve never rented an RV and either walked or parked downtown to tailgait which wouldn’t work with an RV.

3) The “Ped Mall” is a big outdoor area with tons of shops and bars that’s about a 10 minute walk from the stadium. You really can’t go wrong on gameday as far as bars in the ped mall go. You’ll be able to tell which ones are the good ones by the swarms of people funneling in and out.

4) In my experiences pre-game tradition mostly consisted of bar-hopping, walking to the stadium with a case of beer and then stumbling around drunkedly screaming “GO HAWKS” but I’m sure the more mature (whatever that means haha) croud will disagree with me. If the “Magic Bus” gets it’s permit back you’ll have to check that out. Bands play on top of an old school bus across the street in the back yard of the rugby team’s house.

5) All home game tickets are sold out so you will have to resort to second hand sources i.e stubhub, ebay, ect. or take your chances with a scalper but that’s definitely not suggested.

Sorry I couldn’t help more but that’s all I’ve got. I hope you have a great time!

oh, and one more thing I may have forgotten to mention GO HAWKS!

by VicKillFace on Aug 26, 2010 2:37 AM CDT reply actions

First thing you need to do is secure some tickets.

Since Wisconsin is a rivalry game, you will need to act quickly. Try places like StubHub and ebay as the gentlemen before me suggested. You can also ask around Hawkeye blogs and websites. There are many Hawkeye websites linked on this website. (Scroll down and look at the lower right hand corner of this site) Also, Hawkeyesports.com is the official website and may offer different links to tickets.

I think you will be able to find what you are looking for, however; you might have to pay a hefty price. I wish you all the luck in your endeavor. You have picked one of the best Big Ten games to attend this season, and I think you will be impressed with the atmosphere.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask around. People will be more than happy to make sure you experience in Iowa City will be the best it can be.

As long as

you’re not wearing red and white on game day.

Why expand the Big Ten when we could just kick Northwestern out?

Local watering holes

Someone who still lives in IC can comment if any of the following places are still active, IC bars are prone to losing liquor licenses every few years…

My favorite is Bojames, but that’s mostly because my friends know the staff there and they’ll play Journey, Mr. Big, and Bon Jovi on demand for us. It used to be more in the hole-in-the-wall category, its a pretty all-inclusive pub crowd now. You can get 32 oz big beers for between $2 – $5, cover charge is based on capacity

Sports bars: Third base (formerly the Field House), Sports Column, Brothers, DCs – those places will be jam packed all weekend

Irish pubs – Mickey’s, the Dublin Underground

Clubs – The Summit, The Union (biggest bar in the big ten still? 3 stories of drunken debauchery, pretty seedy place IMHO), One Eyed Jake’s, 808

Hole in the wall/townie bars – the deadwood, Joe’s place, Hanrahan’s (not sure if that place is still open)

Cover can very from place to place, and night to night. Expect to pay cover Saturday night, Friday night you can find a good many places with no cover

Keeping wildlife, an amphibious rodent, for uh, domestic, you know, within the city - that aint legal either, Dude.

by AcrimoniousAngerererer on Aug 26, 2010 9:35 AM CDT reply actions

Well covered angererererer but just a few notes..

Hanrahan’s does not still exist to the best of my knowledge, I would definitely add the Vine to hole in the wall/townie bars though slightly farther away from downtown. I have not yet been, but One Eyed Jake’s has turned into the J Bar and is now a gay bar if that matters to you guys.

A few new additions would be Short’s is a good burger joint/bar that features all local food and beers on tap. Pints is a pretty good bar where you are allowed to bring in your own food so grab some Jimmy John’s and head on in. I have not yet been but Slippery Pete’s is a bar/club I believe. Blue Moose is a cool bar with live music usually playing.

What kind of a scene are you looking for solosack?

by A True Americanzi on Aug 26, 2010 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I wasn't impressed with Short's food

The burgers were adequate, if overpriced ( I make MUCH better burgers) and the fries were all burned. I do like the beer selection, though.

by TEXaco on Aug 27, 2010 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions

If not for Kaeding being a part owner of Short's, I would never go there

I like that they use high-quality, locally sourced beef, but their patties are meh. Preformed and too thin to do anything but medium-well to well done. Some nice concepts with the fixings, but a blah patty ruins it.

#2

I know that there is a small lot near the Finkbine (golf course) tailgating spot that allows RV’s to stay the night before (if this interests you start trying to get a reservation now). Around the stadium and the Law building where “the thick of it” is its going to be tough to find a place to put the RV. Angererererererer’s description of the local watering holes seems to be pretty accurate but throw on Sports Column, Brothers, and DC’s. All of these bars are located within a block of each other at the ped mall.

by SaturdayMorningKegStanzis on Aug 26, 2010 12:39 PM CDT reply actions

Finkbine is definitely the place for the RV

but I don’t think you can park there until Friday afternoon/evening.

“You can’t park your car here!”

Just make sure you come armed full to the teeth

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, leaughers…Also a quart of tequilla, a quart of rum, a case of budweiser, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls…But the only thing that worried me was the ehter. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible than a man in the depths of an ether binge…

Bubba has set the bar.

Thanks and keep the advice coming.
Just wanted to let you all know that two Georgia fans both named Bubba (not kidding) set a high bar for paving our path into Athens last year. We are hopeful the black & gold can do better.
By the way – you have some of the best uniforms in the country. Beats the hell out of red & white with a big-ass W.

#2 Finkbine is going to be your best bet

Try to make it over the “the hill” by the law building for a bit at least. Now that they’re cracking down on the drunken tailgating spots, this is one of the last true hawkeye tailgate places around.

  1. If you can, try to find the beer band that wanders around the bars Friday night before home games. Always a good time in the bar when they come in and start playing the fight song, etc. Wig and Pen is a good place to eat and have a beer and is an IC staple. Also, breakfast at Hamburg Inn #2 if you’re wanting a place steeped in history. My personal favorite is the Marco’s grilled cheese guy that’s in the Ped Mall after a drunken night at the bars

Probably best bet is Des Moines or Quad Cities (Moline)

Don’t know about RV rentals, but Des Moines is 2ish hours and QC is 1ish hour.

I can confirm SUV rental in CR on a football weekend is a crapshoot (folks live in CR and I come to 1-2 games a year). Better bet is Des Moines although neither airport is much to write home about. Minneapolis is ~5 hours but has the benefit of actually having flights.

If only you could have come 5 years ago....

Before the University and town started to really dislike tailgaters. Some of the best spots are already closed or in danger of closing. Magic Bus is threatened as already mentioned, Myrtle is on its last legs, Fieldhouse lot and Olive Court are now both history. Farking old people.

Downtown and ped mall is still fantastically crowded with bars though. A saving grace. All the places mentioned above are good in their own way, depending on what you like in a watering hole. Also worth a look but not yet mentioned:
Quinton’s – Best sandwiches in town, big beers
The Airliner – Sports Bar
The Summit – Fratty/clubby
Sanctuary – Goth
Piano Lounge – like it sounds
Donnelly’s – Irish
Buffalo Wild Wings – Sports bar, terrible wings
Atlas – very good california-y food by day, fratty club by night
Yacht Club – crappy live music
Gabe’s – good live music but don’t touch anything or you’ll get gangrene

I majored in hangovers… Basically Ped Mall is about 30 bars and 29 churches. I preferred the former

Gabes isn't bad anymore. Not like Gabes Oasis was.

The bar that occupied the space in the interim really cleaned things up before turning it back over. [FWIW, Gabes Oasis was the definition of “dive” and kind of a biker bar at the same time, that once saw Nirvana and, seperately, Smashing Pumpkins play. Good live young rock mostly.]

That is an egg bomb. It is a small-ish glass of PBR or Miller or whatever beer the bartender feels like using (but traditionally it is PBR), with a pickled egg (hard-boiled) at the bottom. Then you chug the beer and eat the egg at the end.

in that they are a preferred spot for many local brewers to “premier” their new beers via “tapping” parties. Other than that, they’re just a giant place with a massive beer garden…which is excellent now that I’m thinking about it.

I recommend anything on the menu, but am EXTREMELY partial to the pork tenderloin sandwich, voted best in the state 2008. I’ve sampled PTS’s all over the state and this is hands down the best there is. Good local brews, and if you’re looking for something a little more Kosher they have excellent steaks. This isn’t a game day experience, but rather something to do the day before or after. As far as bars go, Old Capitol Brew Works (Old Fitzy’s) on Gilbert St is always pretty good unless you’re in to waiting 30 minutes for a beer while fighting off the urge to earpunch drunk shit heads clubbing to hip-hop/R&B and sloshing appletini’s on your Puma’s. Practically giving away booze. Only remember parts, but I spent all night hitting on my coworker right in front of her fiance. He was a big man, and would have crushed me if he’d realized, but he was more drunk than I was (I kept buying him cheap ass shots all night).

She is my wife now (and mother of my child with one more on the way).

Yeah, It’s kind of weird how the best restaurants “in” Iowa City are mostly in little towns near Iowa City:
Kalona: Tuscan Moon
Mt. Vernon: Lincoln Cafe (so good)
Washington: Dodici

I was speculating the other night with friends why that might be. Too many distractions in the commercial parts of Iowa City for the kind of food experience that takes years and skill and luck to develop?

by The Final Gun on Aug 28, 2010 9:37 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not trying to be a smartass

but there’s really a good restaurant in Washington? I spent a ton of my childhood in nearby Ainsworth and Washington was the nearest “big” town. The coolest things I’ve ever managed to do in Washington are a)see Jurassic Park at the State Theater and b)visit a Kwik Trip and Kum & Go within 10 minutes of each other; now that was a full day.

Seriously, thanks for the list. I just checked out Dodici’s website and was impressed that there’s a place in Washington Co. doing fairly authentic Mediterranean food while proudly serving an Iowa pork chop. You’ve got to love that.

If I had to guess...

the reason why the small towns have restaurants that are more long-term, it might be commercial rent/leases? Seems like the more commercial parts of IC have seen value and rents go way up over the last 5 to 10 years. Meanwhile, you can probably fix up an older building in a small town, or just build new there, for a much more reasonable price.

Look at Atlas, where they were starting to get a good thing going two or three years ago, but the menu hasn’t changed in a couple years because their landlord keeps jacking their prices up everytime they have a profitable quarter so they can’t be risky. Vastly overrated in my opinion. Not worth the drive to Kalona, unless you’re going for cheese, which is a perfectly acceptable reason for the drive. I really like Lincoln Cafe, but the no reservations thing makes the drive up kind of dicey for me. Plus Motley Cow, Linn St Cafe, and One Twenty-Six are damn good in the that price point without the drive. There’s also that newish place out by the Coralville Marriott that my roommate raves about.

Keep It Coming

Half-price big girls – that is right down one our guys alley.

How about the traditions? Like the Tiger walk, howard’s rock, friday night yell practice (one of the scariest things I have ever seen in a Jim Jones kind of way).

I like the idea of the place with Iowa beers – shorts.

Someone told me about a place called Dirty Johns – is that a bar?

By the way – is that the Golden Girl in the above picture?

by solosack on Aug 27, 2010 5:12 PM CDT reply actions

Answers

Dirty John’s is the local name for John’s grocery, not too far from the ped mall. It’s a corner grocery store with a monster craft and import beer selection that’s been doing business a long time. Tradition says that it’s called Dirty John’s because it was the first place in Iowa City to sell pornographic magazines.

The woman is the above picture is definitely not the Golden Girl.

So it doesn’t get lost in the noise – breakfast at “The Old Hamburg Inn” (whatever time of day you manage to get there) is very much an Iowa City tradition. Frankly, I don’t think the food is awesome, but it’s the place that most presidential candidates go for photo ops and townhalls when they’re running the Iowa Primary campaign blitz in Iowa City. There’s pictures of the past 4 or 5 presidents (including Obama) eating at the Inn on the walls there. Pretty cool if you’re at all political junkies. Definitely don’t expect to get a table on Saturday here.

You’ll find as many bar recommendations on this board as there are bars. Honestly wandering the ped mall and the surrounding vicinity is going to be your best bet.

Make sure to get to the game plenty early for a few things we do before the game as traditions:
1) We play a speech that Nile Kinnick (after whom the stadium is named) gave on winning the Heisman. The speech addresses WW2, which was picking up at the time and in which Kinnick was killed. Can be a tear-jerker, but only if you know the history.

2) The players entrance, called “The Swarm” was started by Haden Fry (a legendary Iowa coach) in the 80s. It’s a slow jog of all the players packed together. The stadium goes absolutely wild.

3) Laughing at stupid ass traditions we’ve stolen from other schools, including the Chop on fourth down (Florida), having different sides of the stadium spell our team name I-O-W-A after touchdowns (Ohio State), and others. We need better traditions at Iowa, quite frankly, but that requires something that doesn’t go over well in Iowa: time to allow natural development without marketing-department gimmicks shoved down our throats. One really, really, really infuriating “tradition” we do is the (and oh-god-i-wish-i-was-joking) Buritto Lift. A locally started regional tex-mex burrito join, Pancheros, sponsers a fan-cam which pans the fans while they are raising the roof to the song Pump It Up while an animated burrito bounces up and down on the top of the JumboTron. If I every go crazy and start sniping from a bell tower somewhere, this will be why.

Listen to the Big-Ass-Turkey leg guy do his spiel. He’s loud and a bit obnoxious, but it’s fun. That’s on Melrose, right across from the stadium.

Make sure to get to someone’s tailgate party. I’d invite you to mine, but they suck.

There are other things that diehard fans due, including waiting outside the stadium 2 or 2.5 hours before game to cheer for the team as they come in.

After the Hawks win, the band will play the “Victory Polka” to raucous singing. The song is “In Heaven There Ain’t No Beer”. People will break into the song spontaneously in the downtown bars for the rest of the evening if the Hawks win.

Sincerely, enjoy yourself.

A couple of clarifications to FinalGun's comment:

Our only Heisman winner (and we’ve had 4 or 5 runner-ups), Nile Kinnick, died in a training flight near Venezuela during WW2. So, while he didn’t exactly die while firebombing Hitler’s bunker, it is still kind of eerie (and for Iowans, pride-inducing) to hear his acceptance speech.

Second, I have been told several times that Florida actually stole the Gator chop from Iowa. It may not make sense, but since I don’t really like UF, I guess I’ll buy it.

Third, it is very fun for Iowa fans to spell I-O-W-A (different letter depending on where you sit) and to listen to “In Heaven There Is No Beer/Victory Polka”. We also used to listen to the band play the Beatles’ “Hey Jude” between the third and fourth quarters, but now they usually play “Sweet Caroline.” Not an improvement, in my opinion.

Like FinalGun said, if you get there early enough to watch the players enter through the South entrance, you’ll see most of them touch the bronze football helmet on the Nile Kinnick statue. That’s about as close to “Howard’s Rock” as you’ll get. The entire south end zone section/building/landscaping, as well as the press box, and the scoreboards, are only about 5 years old, and they have really made the place nice. The south end zone used to be mostly erector-set bleachers with outdoor tennis courts behind them. The south end-zone seats also have more leg room than most other seats in the place.

Enjoy your time in Iowa City!

it’s isn’t “ain’t no beer” can’t believe no one has written the whole song but I will be more than happy to. “In heaven there is no beer (NO BEER!) that’s why we drink it here, and when we’re gone from here, our friends will be drinking all the beer” God I love that song!

Awesome fun fact from Wikipedia – Controversy, however, surrounded the song, as some claimed it promoted the abuse of alcohol. This led to the banning of the song in 2001, although widespread fan pressure eventually forced Iowa’s president to bring back the song only a month after it was banned.

Everyone rushed the field and ABC decided it would be awesome to pan across the field and they happened to zoom in on a giant sign that said, “FUCK MICHIGAN!” Needless to say they didn’t show much more of the crowd the rest of the broadcast.

by SallyMason on Aug 29, 2010 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

They foolishly zoomed in on the student section and left the volume on going to commercial after a TD. Networks generally frown on hearing “We’re going to beat the fuck out of you” being broadcast to a national audience.

It never gets to be easy

According to my wife

the “Hey” song was banned in the early 90’s. (She was in the band at the time.)

After the HEY chorus, the band would chant “We’re gonna beat the Hawk out of you!” Which the student section quickly morphed into what Chitown mentioned above.

Also, anyone remember when the band played “Cocaine” which was then banned for promoting drug use, and when “Cocaine” was replaced by “Lola,” which got banned because it was about tranvestite prostitues and when the student section (then in the west stands) and the North end zone would yell the Lite Beer slogan “Less FIlling, Tastes Great” back and forth until it morphed into "F**k You! Eat S**t!?

Mass public displays of vulgarity… THERE’S a tradition for ya’!

Nice

I do indeed – all but the Lola one.

Yes, but seriously

Why would Iowa want to beat the Hawk out of “you”? Wouldn’t Iowa want to place more Hawk in the opponent?

Yet another RV rental option...

If flying into Moline, IL (Davenport/Quad Cities)

I have no affiliation nor have I done business with them. Found the listing in the phonebook.

I'll chime in

because enough hasn’t been said about the restaurant/bar scene. haven’t been to IC in a few yrs and this could be redundant.

Wig & Pen – best pizza hands down. Ed Podolak’s hangout.
Quintons – best sandwiches and bread bowl soup, Fri night 1/2 off big girls, good jukebox
Joes – pretty diverse crowd, maybe a bit older
Airliner – been around forever but seemed to be going down hill
Bo James and Brothers – similar to Airliner crowd imo
Gabes – or whatever it’s called now. not sure this is what you’re looking for
Deadwood – similar to Gabes
Atlas – stuffier but didn’t mind the basement, sometimes.

and then there’s the meat markets – Union, Summit, Vitos, SpoCo, 808, etc

pretty much just walk around a 4 block area and you’ll figure out what you like… I’d definitely go with the first two though for food. and for late night the two mobile carts – George’s and the quesadilla stand

Finish off a night of mass alcohol consumption

with a burrito or two from Panchero’s. It’ll take the edge off, and is otherwise delicious when sober as well. Makes Chipotle seem like a gift-wrapped elephant turd.

Chipotle has better meat

Panchero’s has better everythig else.

Mobie Food Vendor Power Rankings

1) George’s Gyros
2) Pops Italian Beef
3) Meat on a stick
4) Marco’s Grilled Cheese
5) Quesadilla guy (Never had – Is he new?)
6) Walking Taco
7) The really dodgy one (you guys know which one)

If any of the pizza places have small line, then they’re functionally equivalent and go between Pops and Meat on a Stick.

Panchero’s is a different experience altogether – like an extension of the bar really.

I'd completely forgotten about Pops Italian Beef.

I think I ordered 3 sandwiches after my bachelor party this past June. Quality grease covered food to end the night.

In Coralville?

I imagine it was omitted due to its distance from the ped mall.

The Mill

It’s not really a football bar, but if you’re looking for a place to grab some pre-game chow and beers, The Mill is awesome. Plus it’s right on Burlington Street, so you’ll be in the thick of the crowds walking to Kinnick.

I'm interested...

in a grilled cheese sandwich from a vendor’s cart. I’ve only hung out near the ped mall once or twice, and usually earlier in the evening. But if I’m ever there late, I may have to try it.

While I’ve only had Panchero’s in IC once, and while I’m certain many people would say that the Cedar Falls one is somehow inferior, I still patronize the CF one fairly often.

Marco's grilled cheese

Is often open during the day in the summer for lunch. Especially Thursday-Saturday.

I really, really like Panchero’s but they’re a chain. They follow the same formula with the same ingredients regardless of location. The real question is if you visit the CF location after bartime or during the day.

by PackerHawk on Aug 30, 2010 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Usually during the evening, like 6,7,8 o'clock.

Once in awhile I’ll grab a late lunch there.

now your talkin

any food that needs to be described as being with something is off limits for football weekend
Good: Breaded Pork Tenderloin
Bad: Pork loin with plum reduction
Good: Shrimp boil
Bad: Seafood salad with citrus vinaigrette
Good: big ass turkey leg
Bad: turkey breast with balsamic brown sugar sauce

Also, no mexican food as that is a bad recipe for a bunch of guys who will already be drinking a bunch of cheap beer in an RV.

by solosack on Aug 31, 2010 12:26 PM CDT reply actions

Remember, you’ll be in Iowa. Beef, pork, big ass turkey legs, corn in any incarnation, beer and plenty of it. Do not, under any circumstances, eat shrimp. Also, if you land in Cedar Rapids you’re not imagining things. It really does smell like that (Quaker Oats, Cargill, etc.) much of the time. We also think it’s wrong.

by txhawkeye on Sep 1, 2010 8:15 AM CDT up reply actions

My good friend is one of the lead engineers at General Mills

and he swears the smell is Cargill’s fault. That’s always struck me as akin to blaming the dog for a fart.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

If your planning on parking at finkbine (a good idea btw) then I figured you should read this thread.

http://www.hawkeyenation.com/forum/football/14746-tailgating-finkbine.html

I park in a different lot so I don’t know the rules. Apparently you can’t drink in that lot before 12:01 on Saturday morning. Horseshit.

So you should just go out to booze. Its really what Iowa City excels at.

I would also second most of this thread as its true. If you were going to ask me where to go there are two spots I would not miss.

1. Wig and Pen. Thursday or Friday night, after the game, it doesn’t matter. Awesome pizza and hotter waitresses (not totally positive on that as I haven’t gone there yet this fall, but I know how they operate) Close to where your going to park your RV (I’m assuming here)

2. Quinton’s

I was fortunate enough

to work in the Wig’s kitchen for a few yrs during college. and wholeheartedly agree about their waitstaff. those girls like to party…
