Video: Kirk Ferentz Throws Out The First Pitch at a Kickball Game

[Well, this is an automatic bump, isn't it? Yes; yes it is.--AJ]

Kirk Ferentz throwing the first pitch of the HMB (Hawkeye Marching Band) Annual Saxamatone Kickball match.

The match is held every year on the Saturday of Hell Week after the cookout. The game puts two sections of the Hawkeye Marching band against each other for fun and bragging rights for the year: the Baritones (with drum major and golden girl) and the Saxophones (both alto and Tenor).

all I can say is: OUTSTANDING.

Fossil here also.

That made my day. Excellent work!

You can just tell Ferentz is thinking to himself

What the hell am I doing here? I’m the coach of a top 10 team and I’m rolling a ball for a few band members?

Wrong!

Plus 1 to Ferentz for going out of his way. Even the band geeks get love from The King

I spent half my life's earnings on wine, women & song. The other half I wasted.

You’ll be happy to know Kyle, that we took home the W in extra innings on a walk off home run, 6-4. We’ve won the past 3 years now despite being outnumbered 12 to at least 40.

What a pitch

If Stanzi can throw half as well as Kirk can roll, I feel pretty confident about this season.

I never took Ferentz to be a flipflop guy

I always envisioned him as a Docksider kind of leisure wear guy.

You may not know it but...

the band has been in town and practicing for a full week already. They have a pregame and hafltime show for each home game. For reference, most high schools do no pregame and one full halftime show a year…

KF takes time every fall to attend a band and pep squad appreciation event to personally thank over 200 members of HMB (Hawkeye Marching Band) for the atmosphere they help create at Kinnick, complete with a letter of thanks. He makes them feel like an important part of the team. can you imagine Kinnick during a critical game without them?!

band geeks, as someone called them above, are some of the most rabid fans, look what they do to get the best seats in the house, and a free trip to the best of the bowl games. some of you guys will never learn…

I wish I could only remember the good old days!

by two_niner_was_old_school on Aug 22, 2010 6:09 PM CDT reply actions

I think

Half of the band are average-to-rabid fans, whereas half are the kind who sit there on the last play of the game at Michigan State and say “Who’s winning?” The average-to-non-fans earn enough of a bad rep for the rest of the 2000.

You see what I did there? Yeeeaaaaaahhhh.

Er, 200

2000 band members would be intense…and hella expensive.

Not sure what I'm supposed to "learn"

I was in marching band for 4 years in high school but didn’t feel like dedicating the time to it in college that I knew it would be. I respect them for all that they do and its great for KF to do something for them but this is a kickball game for one section of the HMB. Not even the full band. I repeat, its great what he did for them and that he appreciates them, but isn’t this a little bit beneath him?

"Beneath" wasn't the right word choice

It would be better to say that I would think he would have many more pressing matters to attend to 2 weeks before the opening game.

Thanks for informing me of that. Makes him being there make much more sense and I appluad him for taking the time to do that

Kirk is not the only coach that does this.

I am pretty sure that both basketball coaches also make appearances and give little pep talks and impress how important the band is to the teams success and the fans enjoyment of the games. I wish we had more band playing at games and less piped in jumbotron crap.

the trailer hitch scrotum was my idea

by Kluginator on Aug 22, 2010 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions

McCaffery wasn't there

But only because he was at the State Fair, or he would’ve been. Bluder was there, as were a few men’s basketball assistant coaches, and the women’s volleyball coach. Always the high point of band camp for me, getting some personal time with the coaches!

by Xarin on Aug 22, 2010 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't mind the jumbotron as much anymore

Maybe it’s just because I’m an audio geek who loves bass. And loud-ass music.

But please, HMB, don’t quit! You’re still vital, even though you’re totally drowned out by Metallica during the Swarm! (That I don’t like very much at all).

You see what I did there? Yeeeaaaaaahhhh.

This.

I was the one with the “band geek” comment. I didn’t take offense at a crack earlier today (different post?) about insurance salesman, of which I am one. Pretty easy joke, sorta like a band geek joke. Get over it.

Wait

We’re supposed to admire what they’re doing to earn “the best seats in the house, and a free trip to the best of bowl games.” Sound like a bunch of musical freeloaders to me.

I've always wondered

What exactly does the MB entail in the way of rehearsals and whatnot? And also, do you have to audition? I’m a musician myself, I’ve always wondered.

You see what I did there? Yeeeaaaaaahhhh.

by hkobb7 on Aug 23, 2010 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions

HMB

The year starts off with a solid 40 hours of marching fundamentals/music practice during the week before school starts. Rehearsals are Tuesday – Friday for about 2 hours. Gamedays, usually the arrival time is a minimum of 5 hours before kickoff.

Auditions are held during orientation days.

At least that’s how they did it back in my day. If it’s different now, feel free to correct me!

Going, going, going, going, going, going, going, going.... Alright, I'll stop for now.

by EnergizerHawk on Aug 23, 2010 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I got to work at 2AM today.

For the first 5 hours of my shift I spent the majority of the time lifting boxes from 30 lbs to as heavy as 70 lbs. It’s hard work and I’m usually wiped out at the end of my day. Marching band left me nearly as tired many days and I was in much better shape 12 years ago.

What people don’t think about is the fact that a good deal of marching band (especially pregame) is aerobic activity. However, unlike running/jogging, much of the breath brought in to support the body’s functioning is exerted to supply air for the playing of an instrument. On top of that, a great deal of physical discipline and energy is required to hold one’s upper body in a position stationary enough to support the uninterrupted flow of air to an instrument while simultaneously marching (or in pregame, high-stepping) in a typically up-tempo fashion. This is to say nothing of the mental capacity it takes to read music, watch the conductor, remember the routine and maintain perfect posture/style for the duration. In short, it’s exhausting.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Aug 24, 2010 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...

if marching is involved, it ain’t as easy as it looks.

On the other hand, I was even out of shape back when I was in the band in high school, so….

Unless they’re far too cool for such things (because the video’s linked to on this site are routinely no laughing matter) folks should Youtube some Cavaliers or Santa Clara Vangaurd or Cadets of Bergen County (to name just a few). It’s hard not to be impressed by that stuff.

Yeah...

…I played this at my house this weekend with my wife present. She asked me what that was all about, and I told her I thought it was good to see the coach giving back since HMB is a large part of the atmosphere at games.
