He must have written "Harder Better Faster Stronger" for Daft Punk.
I wonder how he spends the residuals?
So he helped popularize Autotune too?
My God, he’s a bigger monster than I’d imagined!

Which means he led to Autotune The News....
…which is just so full of win try win fight win.

His use of the word "great" indicates an optimism in Minnesota.
I think Minnesota may surprise some people this year.

And by "surprise" do you mean...

How bad would they actually be
to be worse than expected?

I refuse to believe that was all said in lower case.

It was...
Looked like somebody slipped him a roofie compared to how he normally acts.

Or maybe that just belies his lack of confidence in this year's squad?

That would explain why he spent half of his time...
Talking about Larry Fitzgerald.

Don't forget
He managed to work in references to the new stadium, TCF Bank Stadium (yes, he went all corporate shill and repeated the formal name) at least twice during the questions. I was shocked he didn’t make reference to the locker room.
I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.
I'm pretty sure
that in KF’s presser he referred to a certain ex-player as Troy Stross.
Who's leg do I have to hump to get a drink around here?-Brian
Should Stross be pronounced as Strohs?
Who's leg do I have to hump to get a drink around here?-Brian
And he also pronounced "Spievey"
With a “Long I” sound (SpEYE-vay). It is “Spuh-vay”, right? RIGHT???
Also, I think he meant to say Trey, but he just tripped over his words. It was a fairly interesting presser, for, you know, August 2nd.
Me gustan los estados unidos.
He seemed pretty comfortable.
Even to the point of jokes at his own expense.
Who's leg do I have to hump to get a drink around here?-Brian
Yeah
Not that that tells us much. When was the last time we saw Kirk Ferentz upset or uptight other than on the sideline at the officials (and even that’s uncommon) about some bullshit call?
Me gustan los estados unidos.
He always seems a little uncomfortable on the stage though.
Not really nervous but kind of figity (Not sure if its a word). A little uncomfortable in his own skin I guess.
Who's leg do I have to hump to get a drink around here?-Brian
no diggity
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.
Uncomfortable...
…in his own skin about his skin having cameras pointed at it.

Maybe he was hung over from his birthday.
(I’m joking, but after I typed it I thought “Isn’t that an interesting thought?” Can you imagine KF hanging with Eddie P? Beer for beer? Can you imagine how dry KF is at breakfast with a hangover? Hmmmm.)
by Eyeheartfreedumb on Aug 3, 2010 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions
Do you think he'd get drier?
I could see him being silent for about half, and then turning to whomever is talking and saying in a calm and level voice, “If you don’t mind, I’m eating, so kindly shut the fuck up.” I guess that’s sorta dry.
Me gustan los estados unidos.
I don't think it's that he's not comfortable in his skin...
I think it’s that he would rather his skin wasn’t doing a press conference.

This
I’ve yet to see him speaking to the press and NOT be fidgeting a bit. Though, my sample size is pretty small… I think it comes with having to talk about yourself and your team and give enough information to be of use, but not enough to get yourself in trouble down the road. To exude enough confidence to be respected, but be humble enough not to be disliked. That sort of thing.
"but be humble enough not to be disliked"
This is why he would never be a successful SEC coach

KF doing a presser surrounded by...
Saban, Meyer, Joker Phillips (WTF, is he a fighter pilot? Way too old to go by a nickname), Houston Nutt, Steve Spurrier, and Bobby Petrino would likely result in Ferentz passing completely unnoticed. Which he probably wouldn’t mind at all.

Paterno sounded like he's had a stroke today...
I have to assume he’s not really doing much in the way of coaching still?
"I wish you luck with a capital 'F'" - The Real Elvis.
People have been assuming that for ten years.
He’s 85 years old, at that age there are good days and there are bad days. But any speculation about how much coaching he’s doing is probably pretty pointless since Penn State runs their football media relations like the KGB.

The KGB is secretive for a reason
because the truth is not what they want people to know. I love the guy and he is ubber good for the BT but today scared me.

Stoops
I’ve been a Penn State fan since as long as I can remember. I was there for the bad years in ‘03 and ’04, I was there for the injury against Wisconsin, I was there for the Iowa game when he just sat in that stupid press box, looking helpless and angry, probably feeling helpless and angry, making me feel totally helpless and depressed. I’ve seen him look bad before, I can recall wondering if he should quit with my Dad.
I can’t get my thoughts collected here as I’m in the middle of a ridiculous flame war at BSD with a single OSU fan (Sam from We will always shave Tempe) and a bunch of Michigan fans who are defending Pryor for no apparent reason thus making me assume Michigan and OSU are truly forbidden lovers. Anyhow, the difference between Penn State and Florida State under Bowden is that we still play like a coherent football team. There is no angst amongst our coaching staff. If there any rumors amongst our recruits about JoePa not coaching anymore, I haven’t head them (Newspaper writers are another story). I have a lot of trust in Joe Paterno. He still says he hasn’t gotten tired of teaching his players, and I firmly believe he will step down if he can’t teach effectively. Joe knows what is best for Penn State.

It's funny you say that
And not just the part about shaving Tempe.
Last semester I sat at a table at the Hancher Finkbine Dinner with an administrator who had started his career at PSU in the athletic department. He’s also a PSU grad for all of his degrees, so he’s all Nittany and (giving him the benefit of the doubt) very connected into all things State College. So here’s my hearsay for the day. He thinks that JoePa really wants to coach until he dies and/or he has assurances that JayPa will get to succeed him in his coaching fiefdom. Fortunately, JoePa also has a situation where his coaches are not going all Bowden-assistants on him and freaking out. He seems to have everybody on board and doing what they need to do to avoid the down years.
Joe wants the next coach to have an understanding of the Grand Experiment. Everyone on his staff has that understanding, so I really doubt he worries about what happens Jay. Jay will still be coaching at Penn State anyway. We all hated him for Morelli, but looking back Morelli was a basketcase and Clark turned out fine. Jay’s position is secure.
No one outside of his family knows what Joe wants. I think he wants to win one more national title to give the next guy an even better foundation to build upon. We know he knows what happened to the Bear after his retirement. We also know that Joe hates fishing.

It is clear that the PSU fanbase is totally fine with him under all outward health circumstances
and it does put you all in a very unique place that you have come to such a sanguine place about the guy. Hayden Fry was about as beloved as it gets at Iowa, as was Gable. But when each stepped down the fanbase was kind of relieved. And they were much younger and much more openly involved in the day to day than Joe Pa. Now, if Penn State went 3-8 last year maybe people feel different. If they go 6-5 his year maybe rumbling begins in earnest. Probably not. But I was struck by how old he appeared yesterday, but I don’t see him that often. It was a bit upsetting to me.
"I wish you luck with a capital 'F'" - The Real Elvis.
There were people at BSD who said he looked older than they remember.
I’m not too upset because a) I didn’t watch the video, and b) he is in his mid-80s. I can’t say I didn’t expect this.
But Penn State will not go 6-5 this year. I mean, they can’t go 6-5 this year, and they probably won’t go 6-6 this year. I can’t say how much Joe does day to day because I don’t think many people outside of the Lasch Football Building really know how much he does. He has capable, loyal assistants (Ron Vanderlinden, Tom Bradley, and Larry Johnson, SR being the most notable) who do their jobs superbly, so he doesn’t have to do a whole lot. But he’s still involved in the major decisions. Certainly he made his opinions on expansion known.
We’re still confident in Joe because he hasn’t shown any indication that he can’t continue to lead Penn State football for two or three more years. After that, who knows? But do I think Joe still has enough left in the tank to win a Big Ten title in 2011 or 2012? Yes.

Ditto'd at the upsetting bit
Seeing such a normally lucid legend having apparent trouble putting together a sentence was…disturbing, in a word.
Me gustan los estados unidos.
It seems some of the reporters felt this way too
I’m hoping he’s okay but was very tired.
