Countdown

Less than one glarbec until kickoff

No self-respecting man from Iowa goes anywhere without beer

It's tough to be patient while that last glarbec slowly creeps by.

But, like my gramma always said, “a watched glarbecon never hoobliates.”

I had never heard that Stanzi has ginormous hands?

perhaps that is the root cause of the Stanziball.

I am sure this has been asked before but who is the lead singer of the BHGP podcast theme.

I think I like the previous version better for dancing but the current song will be nice for curling up on a cold evening in front of the fire with a favorite book and a warm cup of cocoa.

It is, and always has been, Hawkeye State.

I've felt HS's balls.

They are there…and they are magnificent.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

When guests call in, THEY NEED TO SPEAK UP!!!!!

I’m not knocking the production value per se, because I CHERISH the content, but if you can’t boost the levels of the call in guests, they need to know ahead of time to speak like they are having a phone conversation with their deaf grandparents.

No, that's on me.

I’m going to adjust my mic down next time, then just jack everyone’s sound up. We’ll see if that works. Don’t hate the Morehouse. Hate the game.

Before you respond, let me remind you: Brian Cook called me smug, which makes me the Obama of smugness. I'm basically Smugbama.

MORE MOREHOUSE!!!

Can’t hear Morehouse. In order to hear him, I had to make the podcast almost unbearably loud.

CB battle

I keep hoping Bernstine breaks through (not sure why I’m so in his corner – hah) and takes the starting spot. That seems to be less and less likely if reports out of camp and from Mas Casa. That said, Hyde certainly played well and I remember Gary DiNardo being really high on him last fall after the BTN’s visit to Iowa’s training camp. With Spievey/Fletcher/Prater I think we’ve gotten a little spoiled on what to expect from our corner play. Here’s hoping this year is more like the 2008-2009 seasons in pass D rather than 2006-2009.

I think Bernstine's true calling may be at safety, actually.

Unfortunately, we’ve had a logjam there with Sash and Greenwood for a few years. I think he’ll have a good shot to replace Greenwood next year if he doesn’t beat out Hyde for one of the CB spots this year.

I’m excited to see what Hyde can do in live game situations. He’s drawn a lot of praise from guys like Morehouse and Dochterman and there’s been scuttlebutt that he was looking good in practice going back to last fall/bowl prep. And obviously the coaches must like him to have put him on the field in the Orange Bowl when Prater went out for a few plays.

I think you might be right

Bernstine’s best attribute is that he is really physical and appears to enjoy hitting – I always go back to that punt in the 2008 Minny game where he threw a blocker into the return man – in the style of Bob Sanders. I certainly trust the coaches to put the best player out there, and unless Hyde pulls off a mask to reveal the visage of Adam Shada, I would say that he seems to be it. Just disappointed that Bernstine can’t seem to find the field more often, seems like a waste of rare physicality.

It is unfortunate because like you said, he does seem like a tremendous talent.

And considering how rarely we get those sorts of guys and how often we have to go with hard-working overachievers (a la Greenwood), it would be nice to see him on the field more. But it seems like it’s just one part talent in front of him (Greenwood has been good post-2007 and Sash was obviously a revelation in 2008; hard to unseat them) and one part hard luck (he likely would have had a good run at CB by now if not for injuries before the 08 and 09 seasons; fortunately, we managed to luck out and have Spievey and Prater as excellent replacements).

Has Bernstine been playing any reps at safety?

It would be nice to have a guy of his talent ready to step in at any of the secondary positions this year, especially at safety where there’s no depth chart.

by BradBanks4ever on Aug 15, 2010 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions

He saw time there at the open practice yesterday, apparently.

I think he’ll be the first DB in if something happens to any of the four primary starters as well as serving as a nickel back when we show that look.

That darn vodka

They really ought to start sponsoring the podcast. I just went out and bought a bottle of Jeremiah Weed after weeks of hearing Hawkeye State rave about it.
