BHGP Elsewhere: The Mountain West Conference and the big realignment showdown
Now, normally one would not expect to read several hundred words by yours truly that extol the virtues of Boise State. But the Broncos are perfect for the Mountain West and the Big XII schools are not, which makes the MWC's decision to hold off on expansion just foolish. Link?
In absence of your link, which I know if forthcoming, I will say that the MWC decision did not surprise me. Why? Because Boise is a stick of dynamite. Used properly it can help the MWC go to heights not imagined before by them. Used improperly, they will blow their collective fucking hands off. People in power often make the decision to not make a decision when they are nervous. Boise also has its greatest bargaining position right this very moment. So reigniting talks after Va. Tech kills them could be a stroke of genius. But I think they are ultimately in with the MWC, but with how many others is the question now.
I hope we don’t disagree too much…look forward to reading your piece!

The link is the subject.
And I don’t think the MWC will be waiting until after the Va Tech game to decide about adding Boise or not. If they’re going to expand, they have to do so by some date in July (forget exactly when) if they want the new team(s) to count for the MWC’s BCS auto-bid try.

Duh...
as in not knowing about the link (not your post). I still don’t think they are going to get Boise in there by July. I think the Presidents of colleges often do this thing where they pretend credentials are more important than money. When we all know the opposite is true. The history of Boise as an academic institution is hard for a snobby academic to swollow. They were a JC as recently as 1965, which in American University years is like two weeks ago. Hell, faculty at Iowa will tell you that little has changed in the heart of the institution since the Eisenhower administration. Also, when sports wag the tail that makes these blowhards very uncomfortable. I think this is a multi-step process for the MWC, for some reason.
I have nothing other than speculation to base that on. And thanks for schooling me on the link. I read the piece and as always, well written, witty, and compelling.

I'm pretty sure they are only waiting a couple of weeks to see what happens
with the Big 12, Pac 16, Big 10 situation. I would think that by July 1st (or even possibly a week from now) we’ll now what is happening.
If you're right
that would be a PR snafu IMO. They would look like they are flying by the seat of their pants…which of course they are, but academics don’t like to look that way. I’ll be bowled over if this is a one month or less delay. Not to mention that it would be a monumental diss to Boise.

Isn't the Mountain West really a sports conference though, not an academic one?
I’m not challenging the individual school’s academics or integrity, just the thought of them truly being an academic led conference organization. Maybe I’m wrong?
Irrespective, they shouldn’t make any moves until seeing how the college football landscape might shift during Expansion Fest 2010. That looks likely to happen before Saturday, June 12.
The MWC has already...
dissed the WAC once, when they left to form the MWC. I bet they are biding their time on the Boise issue so as not to completely tick off the members of the WAC and their fans. They probably have to depend on each other to fill out basketball and football schedules, as no big schools are willing to play home-and-homes with the top half of those conferences.

I guess I shouldn't say this because I'm from Pennsyltucky...
But what do they teach at MWC schools? Trapping?

Jesus is kind of a big one...
gambling (which is of course called Gaming Management) is one…but my personal fav is Apparel Design at (ta da) Wyoming.

I think that the Air Force Academy may actually be closing in on BYU
in the Jesus department. Yeah, it’s from several years ago, but you get the point.
Is UNLV really fulfilling its role as a public institution if it doesn’t offer a program in Gaming Management? That would be like Nebraska not offering an Ag Program.
Seriously, let’s not poke around at odd majors, every school has them.
Odd majors are absolutely worth poking fun at...
that’s an elitist endeavor that’s as old and important as fraternity induction ceremonies, polo matches and, well, any equestrian activity! Do you want my list of goofy Iowa majors? I got ’em!

Two things...
If any MWC lacks a “mountain-climbing science” major, then they should be expelled from the conference.
And second, any mention/post regarding Joe Tiller should include this version of that pic:

Nice article
My only thought is that they are holding off on Boise because they would like to make one big announcement that they are adding Boise, Colorado and uh, umm, hmmmm. Let say Syracuse. Rather than saying Boise now and Colorado and I dunno, USF a month from now.
Or maybe it will be Colorado, Syracuse & USF while Boise freaks the hell out.

My thought was...
They were waiting to see what happened to the Big 12 becuase they might be merging into the Big 12 instead of the B12 joining the MWC. B12 already has a BCS bid, why would they want to keep the MWC.
On a side note, as a die hard Husker fan, at this point I would be willing to tell Big 12 (Texas) to fuck themselves regardless if we get to the Promised Land (Big 11) or not. I would rather be in a new MWC (and their semi-network) then be Texas’ plaything anymore! GBR… FuT
Assuming that 6 BigXII schools remain
If the whole South leaves and even one North team leaves the conference loses all NCAA automatic standings. I think the MWC would be in a good position to pick up BigXII leftovers and Boise St and ending up around 14 teams. They would be a shoe-in for the BigXII’s BCS bid.
I know they tried the 16 team thing before, but this time they are adding schools that are more established nationally than, say, San Jose State and Rice. Granted, they aren’t adding Texas, but even KSU is probably a better add athletically than SJSU or Rice.

Seeing the MWC
momentarily stiff arm Boise Junior College in order to sift through the Big XII table scraps should tell you everything that you need to know about Smurf Turf U. I’ve lived in Boise for six years, and BJC fans are completely self-delusional about their team’s status in the college football hierarchy. I honestly don’t find them to be any more talented than, say, Indiana. And the game day experience is just… sad. I just shake my head in complete disbelief when I see any person state that these jokers belong in the top ten. Folks, it just isn’t true.
Please.
Stop with the Smurfs.

Thank you
The way the MWC put them on the back burner was such a diss it wasn’t even funny. So clearly, an Iowa State or Baylor even would be a much better grab or them. Much, much better.

For whatever population is worth
If Boise were to join the MWC, Idaho would be the second least populous MWC state (ahead of only Wyoming). On the other hand, both Iowa and Kansas would be in the middle (behind CA, TX, and CO, ahead of UT, NV, NM, and WY). Missouri’s behind CA and TX of course, but ahead of CO. Even Nebraska is ahead of Idaho, though behind all the others (except WY).
Besides, if I were Boise, I wouldn’t be looking to make any changes, consider the run they’ve been on in football. These sorts of things don’t always work out the way you’d think. The ACC CCG hasn’t exactly been an annual Miami-FSU matchup.

I thought the same thing about Boise.
I wondered why they would want to leave such a sweet setup (dominance of the WAC). But, one of these years, they will be undefeated or have one loss, and probably be deserving of a BCS spot, and will be shut out of the BCS. They have only been to 2 BCS bowls, and they have had several 1-loss-or-better seasons this decade. And big schools are probably only getting less and less eager to play them. So, they need a better conference to ensure future BCS games. I’m not sure the MWC is that, but it seems to be good enough for Utah.
