"Most Iowa State fans, especially those residing in the state of Iowa, are familiar with the Hayden-era ‘ANF’ decal that recently reappeared on the Hawkeye helmet. Some may view this decal as a simple gesture of solidarity with the farmers of this state, but as an Iowa State fan and graduate who grew up on a farm, it has always rubbed me the wrong way. To me this decal has always come across as a shallow attempt by the University of Iowa to grab fans and further the Hawkeyes’ image as ‘Iowa’s team.’ While it’s rubbed me the wrong way for some time, it wasn’t until today that it really torqued me off..."

An... uh, interesting read, to be sure. Your thoughts, dear readers?

Typical little brother jealousy.

Sounds the same as their bitching when Nebraska joined the big 10-11-12. “We want it too so why can’t we have it.” “Everyone laughs at us and we never get respect.” “Just because they’re bigger and better doesn’t mean they can have more.” And they call us arrogant. What a little baby.

I don't understand why it's a big deal that most college grads in Iowa attended Iowa State.

Does having graduates that choose not to find jobs outside the state of Iowa make them a better university? What does it have to do with the ANF sticker, or the fact that Iowa trademarked it?

I have about 5 farmers in my family.

One went to UI, one went to ISU, and three did not attend a four-year university.

If ISU had thought about it first, they could have put ANF on their helmets. Instead, they put “Beat Iowa” on their jerseys. And then, they sucked for about 15 to 20 years.

How about

if the state moved the Ag school to Iowa City? Would that make him happier?

I’m sure all the farmers who got health care from UIHC and from UI trained medical professionals agree that the U of I has done “little to nothing” for them.

By this incredibly stupid argument, Iowa State wants all the farmers in Iowa to die because they can’t be bothered to train any doctors or nurses.

This guy is a total fool. No wonder he went to ISU.

I'm kind of insulted that

he thinks Iowa farmers are so stupid that they root for a team ONLY because of a sticker on their football helmets.

by LoveItOrLeaveIt on Jun 27, 2010 3:12 PM CDT reply actions

I had that thought too

I have never thought about it being an invitation for farmers to be Hawkeye fans. I just saw it as something that Fry did as an homage to the state’s primary work force that has become a tradition of Iowa football. Personally, I like the fact that a school that is known for business, law, and medicine, supports the family farm so much. It is a bit regrettable that Iowa can now make money off their support of the farmers, but I think they could raise a ton of money for farmers if they marketed the stickers and gave a cut to farmers.

Best part about this

is what the morons on Cyclone Fanatic are saying…
“I’m glad somebody finally has the balls to say something about this. It has outraged me for a long time. Is there any chance we could win a court battle to get them to stop using the sticker? It should be an ISU thing, not an Iowa thing.”

Thank God ISU doesn’t have a law school.

A state school suing another state school over a sticker.

Sounds like a fabulous use of time and resources. And not to mention state tax dollars. I’m sure Iowans would appreciate ISU wasting their tax dollars to stop Iowa from showing their support for the plight of farmers.

ISU supporting farmers instead of Iowa?

Haven’t America’s family farms been through enough?

by fugeeu on Jun 29, 2010 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I grew up on an Iowa farm AND graduated from Iowa.

So I guess the people I know that did the same are an anomaly. In fact, most of my parent’s farmer friends are Hawkeye fans, not cyclod fans. Funny he doesn’t mention all of the people that went to ISU for school but aren’t actually fans of their athletic teams. Hmmm…

by Carfino'sWay on Jun 27, 2010 8:32 PM CDT reply actions

As someone from the OTHER state school...

This guy is certifiably insane. There is something seriously wring with this man. I don’t even know where to begin, but I’m going to try:
1) I go to UNI, and I know of plenty of people in Cedar Falls and in Ames who wear Hawkeye gear and cheer for the Hawkeyes. Why? Because if I wear a UNI shirt in Florida/California/New York/Anywhere not in Iowa, people will just think “Oh, he likes purple” But if I wear a Hawkeye shirt, they’re going to think “Oh, he’s from Iowa”. To make the assumption that U of I is not the proper representation of the State is fucking idiotic. How many people in Wisconsin cheer for Marquette/Milwaukee/La Crosse and not the Badgers? Not much, because Wisconsin-Madison represents that state on a national level and people recognize the Badgers as a large part of the state of Ohio, just like the Hawkeyes represent Iowa.
2) To make the assumption that any one university out of the 36 different Colleges and Universities (not counting Community Colleges) in the state has made such a large impact on the livelihood of the state is completely wrong and kind of offensive. Just because ISU is the “Agriculture” and “Engineering” school does not mean that the vast majority of farmers and growers don’t use the facilities, labor, money, and of course education brought on by the many, many great places for higher education in Iowa.
3) Lastly, I would like to point out something that Carfino’s Way touched on: The Iowa Hawkeyes are a team, not a school. Sure, they are associated with U of I and of course are under the Universities control, but for God’s sake, we have kids play on the team from out of state. And oh dear Lord, so do the Cyclones!!!!! When someone in Ames/Cedar Falls wears a Hawkeye t-shirt, they are cheering for the HAWKEYES not the University of Iowa. The majority of people in the state cheer for a team but go to another school. That’s called having an opinion and thinking for yourself. Try it buddy. I did. I love the Hawkeyes, I believe they represent the state well. But I choose UNI because U of I has a large campus and too big a party scene. Obviously, you choose Iowa State because you fail.

You are a little off here

I went to Marquette. Over half the people from Marquette are from the Chicago area. Most people there do not support Wisconsin. Its not like Lames that way.

by vahawk on Jun 28, 2010 8:19 AM CDT up reply actions

I think that fits his point

Most people in Wisconsin don’t cheer for Marquette (well, outside of the Milwaukee area). And most people I know who cheer for Marquette in basketball still cheer for Badger football. I’ve even had arguments with Madison alums who are also grad students at Iowa and think I should be a Badger football fan since I went to UW-Milwaukee. Most of the UW schools are more akin to going to Wartburg, they’re your DIII team but you still cheer for the big boys too.

by PackerHawk on Jun 28, 2010 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions

By the way

Wasn’t the ANF thing started when there was some sort of American farm crisis or shortage in the mid 80’s? I was very young (maybe 5-8 years old), so I do not remember the particulars, but I remember Willie Nelson coming to Iowa for a Farm Aid concert. It was around that time that Fry put the decals on the helmets.

So this begs the questions, “How was the U, the non-ag state school, the first to recognize and support the problem, while Iowa State did not visibly show their support?” And,what has it been? 20+ years since this has started. How are they just now noticing or saying something about it?

by shada's revenge on Jun 27, 2010 9:17 PM CDT reply actions

Because in true State form....

…..they want to whine and complain, but not do anything of substance. I have two close friends that got bachelors degrees from ISU. They both hit the work force in entry level jobs, and then promptly turned to getting another bachelors from another university. WOW, that was a great use of $40,000 and a degree. I know another guy that has a four year degree from ISU and is now a seed corn rep. Wow. I hate to tell him that but in the 90’s when I worked at a coop to help pay the bills the seed corn rep had a 2 year degree from a community college, and that guy is a fuck ton smarter than the guy I know from ISU. If ISU wants to have a sticker then how about this IGADFISUAIIFW. (I Got A Degree From Iowa State University And It Is Fucking Worthless.)

One thing I don't understand

is how Iowa is going to be making so much money off of this. It’s a sticker… not the team logo or anything like that. I own a shitload of Iowa gear and plan on buying more in the future. I don’t think I would buy a shirt with a huge ANF on it. Any replica helmets may have the sticker on it but I can’t see that as being a major source of income. Where is this alleged money going to come from?

If I’ve learned one thing in my nearly 4 years in Blogfrica, it’s to ignore anything with a section devoted solely to “Rants.”

Also, I’ll admit the guy has a point when he says “an Iowa farmer can’t move an inch in his machine shed, tractor cab, or corn field without bumping into something that an Iowa Stater had his or her hands in.” But I always thought the point of college was getting a degree so I wouldn’t have to put my hands up a cow’s ass.

I got a degree from ISU

but I cheer for the Hawks. I live in Boston now and people ask me all the time what ANF means. I think any of the state schools recieving exposure can only be a good thing. It doesn’t really matter if Iowa is the med school and ISU is an ag school; they’re both in Iowa which means they both represent the state and its constituents. (BTW, I didn’t have to get another degree, but I do think some people on this blog need an FOS sticker on their helmet)

However, if we want these ANF stickers to get some actual, ya know, TV airtime, they’ve got to go on the Iowa helmets.

In 1984 or 85

when all this started, the price of a bushel of corn had dipped at one point below 99 cents a bushel. Farms were being foreclosed and some banks failed because the people who ran the banks, also friends of the farmers, would rather go down with them than break them. Farm-related businesses also failed. It was the worst situation in Iowa (including the last two years, I suspect) since the Great Depression.

Ironically, Hayden Fry was probably more attuned to farmers than was ISU’s coach at the time, Jim Criner. Also, Iowa had whatever national stage there was for athletic teams. Graduates of both schools were losing jobs, livelihoods, life savings. Nobody outside the state knew, or likely cared, that Iowa wasn’t the ag school, and this was Hayden’s attempt to call the outside world’s attention to the situation. In 1985, Hayden’s football team also served as a hard-to-find positive point of pride for a state in dire straits.

In a way, I understand a little bit of the unseemliness of registering the mark, but that’s what all schools do. Also, these years later, it is now a symbol of Hayden Fry.

My dad grew up on a farm in central Iowa and briefly went to Iowa State College, as it was known. He never took offense, and realized that in eastern Iowa in particular, a lot of farmers are Hawkeyes. Hayden was also his kind of guy, something which counts for more than a little of why I think most Iowa farmers didn’t mind, regardless of school. As much as I like him, Ferentz could not credibly have done this. Finally, we are not far removed from the time where a lot of farmers did not care for ISU because, in their minds, ‘no school teacher could teach my kids how to farm any better than I can’. My dad knew a lot of people with the sentiment that ’If you farmed, you stayed at home and farmed. Now, with the family run, non-corporate farm beginning to disappear, ISU ironically has more acceptance, despite the flawed reasoning of the poster.

I know some of the folks over at ISU can have an inferiority complex at times, but this is silly, and wholly lacking in perspective.

A fella steps out for a two pound burrito and all hell breaks loose.

I enjoy reading everything BHGP and I found it funny how ISU fans were really upset about this. One of their fans wants to put a “WTF” sticker on their helmets. REALLY??? That would make it way too easy for people to make fun of their football program.

And that is that a state university from Ames can go out and parade itself off as a D-1 sports program for all of these years. I am a citizen and tax payer from the state of Iowa and to me this is a total embarassment. Running around year after year disgracing the state like this. Making all of us Hawkeye fans hold up the team from Iowa City above our heads to show the rest of the country that the entire state is not all losers. Also, stop pissing off all of the meteorologists. Calling yourself Cyclones is just embarassing to them and their profession. How about “Iowa State Breezes”? More fitting and it doesn’t make jabs at peoples professions. And, I’m pretty sure you could trade mark it and collect the money off of it. We as Hawkeye Fans won’t mind. You had also quit worrying about the Eastern side of the state and look to the West. If you don’t get better soon theres a team from Lincoln sneaking in to steal some of your fans. And alot of them are farmers too.

I have lived in Iowa my entire life

And have never once had anything to do with farming other than eating delicious sweetcorn all summer. Then I got my degree from the University of Iowa and am now a loan officer with most of my business being in the agricultural realm. Moral of the story: Without this Iowa grad, America’s farmers wouldn’t have any sort of financing for their operating expenses, so ISU is not the only university in this state contributing to our country’s family farmers.
