WORLD CUP OPEN THREAD, Day 17: The Germans Are Coming!

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA - JUNE 13: Mesut Oezil of Germany (second left) celebrates with goalscorer Lukas Podolski (C) during the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Group D match between Germany and Australia at Durban Stadium on June 13, 2010 in Durban, South Africa. (Photo by Steve Haag/Getty Images)

9:00 CT, ESPN: England vs. Germany Blah blah blah World War II blah blah blah penalty kicks blah blah blah storied rivals blah blah blah.  Forget the history and just enjoy the soccer: the English and Germans are two sides loaded with a fair amount of talent -- even if both sides (particularly the English) spent portions of the group stage looking like most of that talent was more focused on their post-tournament vacations than on doing much in the group stage games.  Here's hoping the spirit of the rivalry sparks some better play out of them here.

1:30 CT, ABC: Argentina vs. Mexico Even if Mexico wasn't the U.S.' main soccer nemesis and schadenfreude didn't demand that we root against them here, it would be hard not to based purely on their opponent.  From an entertainment standpoint, few teams in this tournament have been as dynamite as Argentina, led by their on-field mighty mite, Messi, and their off-field maniacal mite, Maradona.  So, yes, we hope that they stomp Mexico into the ground here.

Anyhoo, usual rules of game threads apply: no porn, no discussion of piracy; if you can't watch the game on TV, there are legal online streams at ESPN3.com. (EDIT: Apparently no stream on ESPN3.com for the ABC games.) Beyond that, the topic is verboten.

GOAL! Germany!

Klose puts them up 1-0.

And, hey, England? Not a good idea to try and duplicate the efforts of the US center backs yesterday.

Route one from the keeper, poor CBs, and great finsih by Klose. Wow.

Well, if they're not really "in charge" of anything more than determining whether something is a goal...

there’s limited damage they could do.

Although I’ve long thought that soccer needs more officials. It’s asinine that a sport played by twice as many people on a considerably larger field has fewer referees than basketball. (Yes, there are linesmen and so forth, but they have limited influence.)

If that uncalled goal ends up costing ENG the match...

it may end up being a blessing for Capello and the squad. The controversy over the goal-that-wasn’t may overshadow the fact that this was a deeply flawed team. They’re old and slow, shockingly weak at the back (though injuries are part of that), their best keeper is probably sitting on the bench because Capello failed to get him enough time in friendlies/qualifiers (Joe Hart), their midfield is dysfunctional and way too narrow, and their best player (Rooney) has spent most of the tourney being completely invisible.

by icculus on Jun 27, 2010 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, it is very odd. He was such a non-factor in these games.

Part of might have been physical — he came off with an ankle injury against Slovenia and I don’t think he’s been the same guy, period, since getting hurt in a Champions League match with Bayern Munich in April. I don’t know if he ever got fully healed from that knock.

Part of it might be his teammates — he wasn’t getting very good service from the dysfunctional Gerrard/Lamps midfield — and the formations, which didn’t utilize him quite the same way that Man United uses him (where he’s such a killer).

But, really… a lot of is on him, too. He just looked so unenthused and invisible so much of the time that it has to reflect badly on him. You’d really think a world-class player like him would do more to get into the game and be involved… but he didn’t. Very weird.

Well, that is the catch.

The EPL doesn’t do a lot to foster the growth of up-and-coming English talent. Just look at the roster of the last England U-21 team — not a lot of guys getting a lot of run with their club teams there. And thinking of guys in the 21-25 age range is tough, too. I think Milner will be the heart of the England side going forward (he should move inside to replace Lamps or Gerrard) and Rooney’s still young enough to feature in tourneys for the next 6-8 years, probably… but it’s definitely tough to see where these hot new faces are coming from.

Still, the current generation is only going to get older, slower, and crappier.

One, decide whether or not to keep Bob Bradley.

He did some good things for the U.S. team, but his starting line-ups were pretty questionable at times (WHY FINDLEY WHY WHY WHY) and his pre-game prep has to be called into question: the U.S. started off flat and disorganized way, way too much, both in this tourney and in various qualifiers and friendlies. God bless ‘em for being able to turn things around so magnificently so often, but good teams don’t constantly dig themselves holes. I’m beginning to side with those who think the U.S. needs to get a manager with South American/European experience to try and improve the U.S.’s technical and tactical abilities.

Two, find strikers who can fucking finish. We haven’t had a forward score a goal since 2002. I love Jozy, but he’s still raw. Sidenote: maybe this is why Herc and Buddle should’ve played more: they made the team because they were scoring boatloads of goals for their club teams and scored some for the U.S. in friendlies… obviously scoring in the Mexican league isn’t the same as scoring in the World Cup… but, fuck, scoring is still scoring. Give me guys who know how to finish. Jozy wasn’t exactly prolific this past season.

Three, improve the defense. Not having a fully fit Gooch hurt, but this World Cup also revealed how thin we are back there. I thought the fullbacks played better than expected (shocking, considering Bornstein was a walking disaster at times when he saw the field leading up to the WC), but the centerbacks were weak at times. They played a fairly big role in damn near every goal the U.S. conceded here. For years, the U.S.‘s success was built on a tough backline… well, that script was reversed this year, but when you need to outscore teams and your forwards can’t score… that’s a tough battle to win.

I don't think we'll see Bradley around much longer

if only because it’s very rare for national coaches to stick around for more than one WC cycle. People loved Arena after ‘02 but he’d clearly worn out his welcome by ’06.

Bradley has been great for this side, and while I don’t fault him for the slow starts (c’mon, these guys are fucking professionals; nearly nothing a coach says or does for players this age will change focus) I think it’s safe to say that his line-ups for this tourney were somewhat disastrous. Yet it’s the fact that he takes so many chances with unproven players that his guys seem to love him. Arena used to only play “his guys” (a 90-year-old Jeff Agoos comes to mind) where Bradley gave shots to a lot of kids. You could see the father-like moment he had on the sidelines with Ricardo Clark after he was subbed out; Clark was clearly shattered and BB was right there in his ear taking the blame for putting him in a position to fail. It was really a touching moment.

Sadly, there’s nothing the USMNT can do to improve the quality of its strikers. This needs to develop at a a) youth level and b) club level. The US is doing well on the youth front, but I’m afraid too many players make the jump to Europe too early before they’ve used the MLS as an incubator long enough. If we could get some of this kids to resist the pull of the other side of the Atlantic I think they’d end up being a bit more polished.

Just one hack’s opinion.

Yeah, good point re: coaches not lasting for multiple World Cups.

The slow start is a puzzler. Bradley typically made good adjustments during the game and at halftime and they always seemed to come out more fired up after halftime… but they started flat and disorganized very often under him. Maybe it’s more on the players than him, but whatever it is needs to get sorted out ASAP.

Bradley certainly deserves credit for not being too loyal to guys who didn’t deserve it (although I think this reliance on Findley came perilously close to that sort of failure), but I’m not sure his constant tinkering was helpful. Yeah, injuries and fatigue were a factor there, but new faces coming in and out of the starting line-up had to have a negative impact on the rhythm and organization of the team. I think the spots where it hurt the most where the partnerships at central defense, central midfield, and up front. There wasn’t much to do about the back — Gooch’s injury couldn’t be helped. But it was a revolving door next to Bradley and Jozy.

The US is doing well on the youth front, but I’m afraid too many players make the jump to Europe too early before they’ve used the MLS as an incubator long enough. If we could get some of this kids to resist the pull of the other side of the Atlantic I think they’d end up being a bit more polished.

Yeah. Unfortunately, when Euro sides offer big money transfers for teenagers like Adu and Jozy, it’s hard to say no to that kind of scratch and work for comparative minimum wage in MLS.

I had the opposite impression re: playing "his guys"

Findley should never have seen the field, not when we have two in-form strikers (Buddle and Gomez) and a third (Altidore) who has shown flashes and is at least drawing fouls and cards even when his final touch is off. Yet he starts all three games where he’s available … and naturally, the only one where we look dangerous for almost the full 90 instead of a half of EPIC FAIL in the attacking third is the one where he’s out with yellows.

GOL (maybe) for Tevez and Argentina… even though he was blatantly offside.

Still: fuck Mexico.

Nice backpass there, Mexico. GOL Argentina (this time legit) for Higuain, now they’re up 2-0.

And Higuain moves into the lead for the Golden Boot — 4 goals now.

It is amusing to watch Argentina's keeper dive at shots a second or two too late.

If Mexico’s shots were a touch more accurate, this game might still be close.

holland vs. germany IS GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!! yes jinx them all you dumbasses!

loser coach and beckham whinning like a baby!

im sorry but germany would have lambasted USA. england and the american media whining about a goal that meant little in this game. if you dont think germany wouldnt have continued to paste that awful goalkeeper think again! what a horrible keeper. both of them. the 3 lions and no goalkeeper! you have bigger problems england…YOU STINK! your whiny coach needs to look in the mirror and see a team whose no match against the real top teams. you may be able to beat or tie usa but germany isnt usa. (insert laughing)

I said this team with beckham by their side was the most overrated of the tournament and they were outted as exactly that.

payback for 1966 england! OUCH how does it feel to be on the other end???

argentina – germany COULD be a worthy final

i hope everybody looks past germany AND holland! what are the odds of my dream match happening. keep talking you idiot announcers! not everybody thinks argentina vs brazil is a given
