ATTN: All Your World Cup Fantasy/Pick Em Game Information
The "other" football -- the one the entire world cares about -- gets going in the biggest and best tournament around tomorrow morning and there are all kinds of ways to keep yourself entertained in addition to watching the matches and participating in the game threads we'll have up. To wit:
You know brackets. You like brackets. This follows basically the same format as the bracket pick 'ems everyone does for the NCAA hoopys tourney in March.
Official BHGP group is right here; if that doesn't work the info is:
group name: BHGP
password: Yankee
The Bracket Predictor asks you just to pick the top two teams from each group for the purposes of advancing in the bracket (as well as the winner of every game in the knockout stage, naturally); if you want to really prove your prognostication prowess, why not pick the winner of every single match?

And if you're really hardcore, try your hand at fantasy World Cup action. Unlike most MLB, NBA, NFL, or NHL fantasy leagues, this is a salary cap-based game, so there's no draft to worry about it. That also means everyone can have Messi or Ronaldo or Rooney or even Timmy Howard if you're feeling good and patriotic (and not at all terrified about the increasing porousness of our back line -- gulp). Just pick a team that fits under the salary cap, pick a captain and you're pretty much good to go.

Excuse me for my bellicosity. And spelling. Bellicosity and spelling.

We'll have an open thread up.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
I'm fucking pumped.
Have the day off as an obligatory prep day for the Saturday wedding. However, since the lady has to have her hands in everything, I get to sit around and watch soccer most of the day. Ecstatic. I just hope I don’t sleep thru the first half of Mexico-South Africa like I did with US-Australia.

I'm terrible with salary caps.
Too much focus on stars and not enough spreading of the wealth. I’m going to need Gerrard to come thru in the middle, $10m is outrageous (and as a Red, I can’t not select my captain). I also refuse to give up on my Jozy prediction and think he may have been a steal.
Yeah.
The US guys are so dirt-cheap (mostly) that it’s easy to be kinda homer-ish.
And, yeah, it’s hard to find that balance between pricey stars and bargain guys, especially since we see so little of the guys on sides like Slovenia.

They really killed any true homerism, though.
Only 3 players from each country. Timmy Howard, Jozy and Dempsey. Donovan was to expensive. Had to save room for Torres and Gerrard.

Dammit Greece, why did you have to suck so bad?
A draw there and I would be perfect so far in the Pick ’Em.
Because they're Greece;
managing to play a style of soccer that predates the invention of the game.
Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

I'm pretty sure I'm Justin S, fifth in the world or whatever.
But I entered fake info and now I can’t remember any of it to know for sure. Yay for Dempsey and Howard?
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.
no, wasn't me, as it turns out

Ya know, there's no real reason to enter fake information.
It’s not likely that any of us would’ve known who you were, anyway.

Meh. It's not about here. It's about ESPN.
I just did a pretty big research project on social networking et al for STRATCOM and… I’m just a little hesitant right now about the information I put out “there.”

REMINDER
A new gameweek starts with the second round of group stage games, which begin with Uruguay/South Africa this afternoon.
Sorry for the late notice.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
Yeah.
Pick ’Em picks only lock at gametime. The bracket is obviously set now. But the rosters for the fantasy game lock at the start of the gametime for the first game in a given “round.”

I don't know who you are, Dos a Cero, but I salute your pick 'em skills.

I'm failing miserably.
I can’t see the scores thru the office filters, but I can’t have more than 8 right at this point. Awful.

If I'm not mistaken...
You’re tied for 8th with 9 pts.
The leader has 15 points. I think there have been 22 games to pick so far. Considering I’m tied for 3rd with 11 points (or 50% right), we’re all, um, struggling a bit. This is turning into a very crazy tournament.

I believe you were correct.
Made a bit of a move today. Sitting tied for 8th with 11 points.
I am fairly proud of the fantasy squad, though. It’s tight at the top. A decent performance from Spain will help. Another goal out of Maicon would be nice, too.

That's me
Officially went 0 for 3 today, though I contend that I was right about the US game and the referee was wrong.
I think there were a lot of 0/3 results today.
I was one of them. Based on the early results, Germany, USA, and England seemed like safe picks. Er… not so much.

The next set of group stage games starts tomorrow, so make subs now.

So, I'm kicking ass in Pick 'Em ...
… and yet I’m significantly off the pace in the Bracket Challenge. Go figure.
