Tim Dwight Didn't Only Run Fast

As the years go passing by, we necessarily simplify our memories, often to the detriment of the subjects thereof. For example, Tim Dwight. Guy who broke the NCAA punt return record by running in a straight line very quickly? Well, yes. That happened. But people, let's not forget: Tim Dwight went fucking hard.

(You should definitely convert both of these to 480p instead of 360p, by the way, otherwise the compression makes them look like garbage.)

So who's going to be flying around the field like that for Iowa this year? Doesn't have to be a wideout (see Sanders, Bob), but it's gotta be someone.

As was I

sat first row, right in front of the AZ cheerleaders, crazy crazy hit!

As was I

and if I recall he got a penalty for that one, which was BS. He was 2 yards away when he touched the ball. It’s just that he closed that 2 yards so frickin fast that it SEEMED like he didn’t give him space. Dumb rule. If he didn’t want to get hit, he should’ve called for a fair catch.

I was also at the Big House for the Michigan game linked in “That happened.” We were, unfortunately, surrounded by Michigan fans, not in the Iowa section. Most of them were bitching about Hayden calling his remaining 2 time out’s so Iowa could get the ball back with almost no time left in the half. Guy next to me asked his friends “what the eff are they going to do when they get it back on their half of the field with 15 seconds left? They haven’t been moving on us all half.” The silence that followed (after we were done cheering) was truly enjoyable!

If only Matt Sherman had seen

Tavian Banks streaking down the sideline on Iowa’s final possesion. Instead, he threw it to Sam Sword. Who played for Michigan.

I loved how by 1997, during the few times Dwight got a chance at a punt return,

the crowd buzz/roar already started the moment the ball hit his hands. As soon he as he caught it, there was a 50/50 chance it was going all the way.

Lord, I miss Timmy D.

As far as who’s gonna be flying around like a madman this year… I kinda like Tillison, if he can get on the field in nickel situations or special teams. He’s got good speed and hits like a truck from what I remember.

I think Tarp could definitely be that guy.

Sure he doesn’t quite have the speed, but holy crap he can lay a hit. See Michigan return last year.

Second hardest hit I have ever seen at Kinnick

The only harder hit I can remember was Yanda laying out a freshman DB from Iowa State on a reverse

Sadly

This Eric Crouch number might be the hardest hit I can remember at Kinnick

Granted, I haven't been to as many games as y'all,

but watching Derek Pagel lay out Bollinger(?) from Wisconsin in 2002 was easily the hardest hit I’ve seen. Almost as impressive as the oooohs coming from the crowd.

Tim Dwight Is The Man

Whenever he got his hands on the ball I got in the habit of chanting “Go Timmy”. It got louder the closer he got to the end zone. His Super Bowl runback was no exception (the Sports Column went crazy over that btw). Anyway, to this day when a Hawkeye breaks loose a good return, there is a very good chance the words “Go Timmy” will come out of my mouth.

At least one of our victories over Penn State (forget the year) was quite simply because Tim Dwight refused to lose.

1996

Only two catches, but one of them was a 60-some odd TD, and the other was to keep a game killing drive going. And of course he also had that amazing punt return.

About time...

…we got a KR/PR as good as Tim “TD” Dwight… In my 4 years at Iowa, I think I only ever witnessed Brodell take back that punt against ISU. And last year, DJK took that OSU kickoff back 99 yards. Other than that, I really can’t recall touchdowns coming off of returns.

A strong defense, and a punt return threat would probably more than make up for an inconsistent offense.

Also, is that Dwight hit legal? Only ask because it seems like the Arizona guy barely caught it before he got drilled. Not that I feel bad for him….just curious.

by edr247 on May 25, 2010 9:40 AM CDT reply actions

No, that was a 15-yard penalty.

Or should have been, anyway. But, oh, what a way to get a penalty…

Unless you have a super-freak returner like Darren Sproles or Devin Hester or, yes, Timmy D back in the day, it’s probably not a good idea to rely on the return game to make up for the shortcomings of the offense. I don’t think we have any super-awesome return guys, anyway; I think we all hoped Chaney might be that guy because he’s a burner, but he hasn’t really shown us much.

Wasn't PCJr affected by injuries last year?

I still think he’s got a shot at becoming a solid return threat, and I’d much prefer to see him returning kicks than DJK or Jewel Hampton. I understand that injuries are rare on returns, but watching WR1/RB1 return punts and kicks makes me a bit nervous.

by The Mexican't on May 25, 2010 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions

He was injured, yeah.

But even when he played, he wasn’t dynamite. I’m guessing we’ll wind up seeing Sandeman there because he’s the safest option; he’ll field the ball cleanly and get 8-10 yards a pop. Which isn’t the worst thing in the world (watching various dudes just let the ball bounce and roll when he was out after that nasty concussion he got in the MSU game last year was really aggravating), but not the most exciting, either.

by RossWB on May 25, 2010 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

This one was a penalty...

…but there was one after that where he showed such control (he learned from this one, I think) where he got all the way down field and as he got to the halo (or whatever) he broke down, loaded up, waited for the catch and then BOOM! [No he didn’t borrow Cornshoe’s cannon, but the guy he hit probably thought he did.] No penalty, just snot bubbles.

by Eyeheartfreedumb on May 25, 2010 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Nope

Not legal, and they mention it in the video. That was my first Iowa game at Kinnick in 13 years, and Iowa frankly didn’t play very well. They won, but didn’t look that good, despite being a clearly better team. So, at the time, I was actually ticked off at the hit. Before he ever made contact you knew it was going to be a penalty. It was a tremendous hit, don’t get me wrong, and I think I could hear the helmets from my near-nosebleed seat, but it was a penalty at a time when the game had no flow. What I don’t remember is whether it was a 5 or a 15.

The “halo” rule has changed, and I don’t even know if it exists anymore. But today, it would have been a 15-yarder for head to head contact. Sometimes you don’t mind a penalty play if it ignites the team. I don’t remember that, or much else that day, getting the team going particularly well. But it was a win, and another example of how crazed Dwight was.

Our special teams haven’t been as good in recent years as they were early on in Ferentz’ years. Even then, most of those were kickoff returns, not punt returns like Dwight had. I’m not certain, but I think we played more starters on special teams back then. For a while we didn’t, out of injury concerns. Then, we brought some starters back in. I don’t know how they handlie it now, though I think I have seen a couple of starters on kickoff returns. I think we have plenty of speed (okay, not Dwight speed, but not far off) but I question whether our set up blocking is as good. Provided the angry running-back hating god does not strike again, we ought to have plenty of capable backs to return kickoffs and punts.

Yay for illegal plays and going for the head?

Tim Dwight on NCAA ’9? was awesome. I had a friend that would play as Iowa from time-to-time and would run Dwight back-and-forth until he broke a KR/PR for a huge gain, even if it meant going back-and-forth 4 or 5 or 8 times. He probably broke a > 40 yard run 50% of the time. It sucked.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

Okay, so Timmy D was a Senior in H.S. when I was a freshman....

…and at the game before heading to the Dome we (Kennedy in C.R.- – I know…) faced City High. T.D. had put together a highlight reel season, but our team held him to like 7 first half yards (total). We felt good, came out from halftime, and T.D. ran back the kickoff for a TD. Then he ran back a punt for a TD. Then he caught a TD. Then he threw a TD (or maybe by that point it just felt that way).
Anyway, my team lost to Tim Dwight in one half of football. It was impressive.

by Eyeheartfreedumb on May 25, 2010 2:02 PM CDT reply actions

I was also a freshman when he was a senior

And for all his phenomenal exploits in HS football, he was even more otherworldly in track.

I played in Adam Haluska's conference and overlapped with him a bit

I’ve always said the same thing about him. He was obviously an amazing basketball player, but in track he was just otherworldly. He damn near jumped over our entire long jump pit

(his “record” in the 100 was bullshit though)

Dad and I saw TD play in person (Tulsa) in 1997...

Only football game we ever saw together, and fittingly, at Kinnick.

Thank you for putting up this thread, Timmy was a special player for us.

RIP Dad.

I love reminding people that he played on defense too...

…not just special teams, but defense.
The first game I ever went to I was a freshman at Kirkwood and a friend at Iowa called and said she could get myself and a few friends into the student section (those borrowed student IDs were the WORST approximations of me and my friends she could find, but they were found durring tailgating that morning, so beggars couldn’t be choosers). We were 18 so of course we went to the grocery at the bottom of the UHeights hill and bought a bunch of MadDog 40/40 and Boone’s Farm (we were sharing with Burge chicks who had only been on campus for a few weeks, so they said it couldn’t taste like beer).
The sweet liquor was really starting to hit us (especially with the sun shining down) and Timmy D got put in on defense. I believe it was his first game on D and we were all anxious to see what would happen. I watched him a lot as a middle and high schooler, so I knew he could wreck shop. His first play on D he sat back in coverage (IIRC), but on the second play he came up behind the D-line and I shouted, slurring, “Oh, here he goes, he’s goin, he’s goin…” The ball was snapped and TD shot into the backfield and utterly destroyed the QB. “OH!” went the crowd.
High fives all around. Drunken debauchery ensued. I’ve not had Boone’s Strawberry or MadDog since that day.

I’ve not had Boone’s Strawberry or MadDog since that day

If you had, TD would have continued to be an ultra-stud, every game, in all three phases. So it is clearly your fault that TD did not win a Heisman.

No, you will not be forgiven.

Oh, clearly. Actually, everything bad that has happened at the University since 1997 is my fault because I didn't become a raging narco-holic...

…On second thought, before we indict me too heavily here I’d like to nominate another possible scapegoat. Maybe we should blame the man who thought he’d give his wife’s wine cooler a little kick… by adding lacquer thinner. That man’s name was Boone [or maybe Mad Dog, who knows, but you see what I’m saying].
Boone’s Farm is what you give your kid if you don’t want them to ever drink again. It goes down like Kool-Aid. I’ve not had the pleasure, but I hear it comes back up about as smooth as riding a seatless bike on a gravel road in the midst of a major hemorrhoid flare-up, and tastes like a dirty, strawberry asshole as it passes over the tongue.
Mad Dog is what you get when you’re 15 years old and you pay a homeless alcoholic to score you some beer (and what you realize later is that with you $20 he got two for himself and one for you). Mmmmm. Bum liquer.
But we can blame me if you want. Maybe I’ll pick up some Boone’s sometime in early September. Though I kinda hope nobody starts playing like Timmy D that day. I don’t want to have to spend every Saturday on the Mad Farm (cause I would if it worked).
