And now we know why
Ben Brust was a side dish on the plate of Fran The Man. Welcome to Iowa Mr. Basabe. Iowa can always use an agressive, athletic, 6’ 7" jack of all trades with speed. Especially given that we almost never get your kind of player on campus, much less to commit.
"I’m sick of following my dreams. I’m just going to ask them where they’re going and hook up with them later." M.H.
This doesn't have anything to do with Brust
They’re filling totally different roles. If anything he’s a replacement for Larson.
Also, i have no idea why you are assuming Fran wasn't still going after Brust hard
There’s really no indication that he didn’t really want to keep him. Your whole post just comes off like sour grapes.
Has Fran visited him?
No. Yet, he visited Fuller. He visted Marble. He has, to date, not visited Brust. So back off big boy. I’m working off widely available reports and drawing conclusions, which unless I am speaking English as a third or fourth language, that is the bread and butter of this site—-you included. This isn’t the New York Times, I’m not a reporter, and you’re not George Will, at least I hope you’re not. As for fulfilling roles….why on earth would Fran want Brust from a personnel standpoint? Why? He has five guards on the roster and only Archie, Brommer and Cougill over 6’ 7". This is the Big Ten, if Iowa is seriously going to contend for anything in this conference it needs to get longer, taller and more athletic. Brust fits none of thos criteria.
Finally, and this is very important, this is my argument. If you want to challenge the argument then pony up…otherwise…

His statement when they released Ben from his LOI said he'd met with Ben and his family
And most reports I’ve read indicated that he was still actively recruiting Ben. There was no reason for him to do that if he didn’t want Ben back.
As for why we’d want him, by most indications he’s a pretty good basketball player, which is something in short supply around here lately. He’s also capable of playing some point guard, even if it might not be his first position, which is a huge need for Iowa given that the only other guys on the roster capable of doing that are Cully Payne and….nope, just Cully.
It is probably fair to say to the basketball team needs help in all areas,
not just one position in particular. I do like the idea of NorseHawk actually being George Will, though.

I'd prefer it if G. Will's screen name was something more edgy...
….like, imagine that tightwad fucker going by something like… oh, I don’t know, maybe “Pubes in Pink Urinals.”
THAT would be awesome sauce.

Yeah, Stoopsy, about that
McCaffery visited Brust the day after he visited Larson. Though I agree with you on the much-needed shift in personnel, anyone good enough to get offers from Wisconsin and Wake Forest is good enough for me.
Before you respond, let me remind you: Brian Cook called me smug, which makes me the Obama of smugness. I'm basically Smugbama.

HS, you know nothing about basketball.
Where are Devin Harris and Chris Paul now? Pretty sure they’re in Turkey somewhere…

I was going to make a joke...
that went like “if they are in Turkey, they just get to be dominated by Greg Brunner now.”
And then I remembered that both of those dudes are good in the NBA, and Brunner is now in Italy.

Yeah, but Bru is GOOD in Turkey
and I’m big in Japan…OK, I’m average height there.

I stand corrected on the visit
But I absolutely don’t think Fran is lustily wanting all of Lick’s old recruits simply due to ranking. I’m not saying Brust isn’t a great prospect but I have to believe the kid, who was wearing Iowa paraphernalia everyday to school for weeks, is not interested in fulfilling his LOI for a reason. Two that come to mind are…One, maybe he did not get a warm, fuzzy feeling from Fran. Two, maybe he is not particularly interested in an up-tempo offense. Again, I might be wrong but something did not sit well with the kid. And the only reason for a kid to go to these lengths to get out of his contract is that he thinks his future is not bright if he is stuck with Iowa. And all I’m saying, which I do not believe to be sour grapes is, I think he might be doing the right thing. I do not sense that Fran is losing sleep over these players…Fuller included. He seems quite confident that he can find talent for his style of play…and lo and behold, along comes Basabe.
From a strategy standpoint, why should Fran kill himself to be rid of all these scholarships just to do it? Iowa isn’t winning next year. A scholarship is a long-term commitment to a player. I think Fran is going to lengthen this team and transform it and scholarships are the only way. I do believe he would have liked Larson though.
Basketbal recruiting—at all positions—to me, is like recruiting a QB in football. It is very important to get guys who fit a mold for your system as you perceive it. By mold I mean psychologically, physically, intellectually and guys who have shown they can do the things you KNOW as a coach they will be doing when they get here.
Finally, Marble is expected to play point guard I thought?

Wait, someone transferring TO Iowa?
I’m not sure I know how to process this info…

Some corrections, yo
1) Basabe is NOT a transfer. He’s a High School Senior who changed his commitment from Siena to Iowa.
2) Marble is NOT going to play point guard. He just isn’t.
3) Fran wants Brust. He’s done an in-home with him and has stayed in very close contact via telephone. Barta has also been in contact with him.
Yep.
We have to get all we can right now. The fact that he signed an LOI with Iowa means he is/was interested, and how many decent prospects are interested in Iowa right now?
Best case scenario: we get Basabe AND Brust. Of course, the fact that Brust asked the appeal process to go that far does diminish our chances.

Of course Marble will spend time at point
he even said he wants to. In Fran’s system there is no way Cully could be the only point. This is a completely different level of fitness required than in Lickliter’s YMCA Saturday night pick-up ball offense.
"I’m sick of following my dreams. I’m just going to ask them where they’re going and hook up with them later." M.H.
You mean the offense that was a half-court heave away from winning a national championship?
(I’m just sayin.)
I will not defend Lick, cause he wasn’t even here long enough for me to consider him a Hawkeye coach, but c’mon with the constant jabs. He’s gone. This is the part where you smile because you won.
Oh, and I worked at the Y for like 6 years, and they’re closed on Saturday night (unless it’s kids basketball season, in which case there is no pick up games- – however, I liked that line when I read it).

I'm not jabbing Lickliter
I’m kind of slamming him, really. If I was jabbing him my comments would be more piffling. And I don’t think it was Butler’s offense that got them to the final…maybe I’m wrong on that. But I didn’t hear Jay Bilas or Dickie V marveling at Butler’s prolific scoring machine.

Kudos to Caffs for landing Melsizzle. Rumor is Coco Ware is now a prospect as well.
I love him just for the name. http://meridianstar.com/sports/x1897239125/Be-Ware-of-Coco
And then there’s that Anthony “Salty” Salter dude. Whatever. Also a decent option.
I hope Francis lands a PG or combo-guard — otherwise we might see Cougs runnin’ some PG action next year …

That's what she said.

From the photo it does look like he has gotten away from dribbling with 2 hands though.
