When Iowa hosts Ball State in late September, they'll be wearing throwback jerseys celebrating the 1958 Rose Bowl champions. The picture shows a game worn jersey from that year and what the 2010 version of the helmet will look like.

More details are here.

Completely unironic

AWESOME! The last throwback against Kent State was also cool but wouldn’t it be cooler to have a throwback game against another team with actual history? Maybe against Minnesota so they can wear jerseys from the 1930’s and relieve their last successful era. Either way, it should be fun to watch.

A full game of these?

Ghastly.

I wonder if one of the reasons they do this kind of thing in games against the likes of Kent State and Ball State is that KF doesn’t want to screw with his routines in the games he deems more important. Playing around with uniforms or game locations is OK against MAC schools, but when Big Ten play hits, there’s no time for fucking around. Or not. I dunno.

Agreed.

And it’s one more way to get the on the fence fans to buy a ticket and earn more buzz for a game that’s otherwise not going to get much attention (outside of being one of the first Iowa games of the season).

There were some pretty sweet plays from that Kent State game (especially Chad Greenway), but I still have friends that wear their throwback Kinnick jerseys and the leather helmets (I think those were sold at that game), so the game leaves a stronger imprint than most MAC games do.

Except for Western Michigan. Fuck Western Michigan.

If there are fans with the means and opportunity to attend Iowa games

that need to be convinced to go when the team is coming off an Orange Bowl-winning season…well, those really aren’t fans, are they?

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Mar 8, 2010 3:14 PM CST up reply actions

I predict...

that season ticket sales will be robust, between the Orange Bowl win, the expectations for next year, and the killer home slate (ISU, PSU, Wisco, and OSU), but actual “butt-in-seat” attendance will be a little lacking for Ball State and Eastern Illinois. The only I-AA games I can recall packing out Kinnick were the UNI games, especially last year’s.

That seems unlikely.

i dont know about you all

but I don’t really like the 11am gm starts in late Aug/ Sept due to 90 degree heat & sunburns.

Iowa might be able to get more butts in the seats for a 6pm gm vs. MACrafice team X.

You know they sell the games out, right?

Getting butts in the seats isn’t exactly a concern. This isn’t ISU.

Iowa does sell out, they've had 2 un-sellouts the past 5 years,

surprisingly, one of them was the Shonn Greene, Sr Day game vs. Purdont when he broke Frank what’shisname’s Boilermakers ankle.

by pfac51 on Mar 9, 2010 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think they'll have any trouble selling out this game.

Most people don’t mind the early start. Hell, I’d say most expect the early start, which is what makes the night games so special.

DUONG!!!

Every time I think of that name I imagine that someone just hit a gong or rang a bell and make the name sound like it when I say it. So fitting.

Ask Frank...

by Eyeheartfreedumb on Mar 10, 2010 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe "fans" wasn't the right way to word it

How about “people who would pay $45 to the University of Iowa to sit in Kinnick Stadium”. Gotta draw attendance somehow. Even without the throwback game it could sellout, but with the throwback gimmick, it’ll put butts in the seats (and money in the drawers of vendors) with those people willing to pay scalpers $15/ticket 5 minutes before kickoff.

I do have more rhymes than Jamaica got mangos.

by LuebkeSwims! on Mar 8, 2010 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

Good point.

It’s okay to do special uni’s when you’re playing Testicle Tech, but I firmly expect a Tigerhawk and the regular uniforms during conference play.

How about trying out these for a game?

the "winged" uniforms were during the

Few years of the Reebok contract. There was also a black Reebok jersey with yellow bands on the arm sleeves (Tim Dwight era).

I am a big fan of the winged jerseys, they"re difficult to come by.

So you might not want to wear those ever again.

We could wear the throwbacks for the minny game? Thats kind of a MAC school now isn’t it?

by smokinthereiff on Mar 8, 2010 3:26 PM CST reply actions

That reminds me...

I have long been in favor of the Big Ten adapting a soccer-style relegation system and sending down the last-place team each year and bringing up the MAC champion.

Hell, Indiana already seems to play half their schedule against MAC teams anyway — might as well put something on the line in those games…

by RossWB on Mar 8, 2010 4:48 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe I'm just a throwback hater, but I didn't like the last ones, and these don't have anything special either...

…However, I like the striped uni that Ross posted. It’s just… if you’re going to buck tradition by bringing back an older version of tradition, at least bring something memorable. I mean, unless there’s something we aren’t seeing in the photo, these throwbacks look like middle school unis from the 1980s. Plain black and yellow with a plain yellow helmet. Wow. Seriously? These unis make Penn State look flashy. They aren’t going to abolish the forward pass for this game are they?
It’s okay for them to tweek these a little right? I mean, they could throw a patch on there, or write IOWA somewhere on the jersey or helmet. We’ve had some really cool helmets over the years, so why go with plain yellow? Maybe we could have some atta-boys on the helmets for that game.

by Eyeheartfreedumb on Mar 8, 2010 4:15 PM CST reply actions

Gussying them up would kind of defeat the purpose, though.

They’re meant to celebrate the 1958 Rose Bowl team, not just be an alternate uniform.

I loved the throwbacks from the Kent State game,

and would fully support their use each year. However, the idea of long sleeves has my curiosity piqued. Will the 2010 Hawkeyes wear the full length sleeve in early September, and, if so, how weird is that going to look with the size of current shoulder pads?

by The Mexican't on Mar 8, 2010 7:44 PM CST up reply actions

I gotta think they won't be wearing full length sleeves in early September.

any excuse to get extra drunk :)

by FloydofRosedale on Mar 12, 2010 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

I realize that changing them would indicate that it isn't 1958...

…but I think enough has changed between then and now that we may have already destroyed the illusion. So what’s wrong with making them look “cool” enough that people may actually want to buy one (that’s how most schools market their teams- – y’know, try to sell merchendise).
I love the idea of a throwback, but when you end up wearing a jersey that makes you look like you’re playing sophomore football for Bettendorf High (with the varsity’s hand-me-downs)… well, it’s just that the ADs office has made better decisions.

by Eyeheartfreedumb on Mar 9, 2010 10:30 AM CST up reply actions

I think they will sell plenty, regardless.

The throwback in ’04 seemed to do well and that was just a plain black jersey with old gold numbers. Simplicity sells, sometimes.

DONT PANIC

there’s an update that says the helmets will have a black stripe down the middle with numbers on both sides. Apparently an equipment manager decided to have some fun with the press

What? Are you kidding me? Look at those stripes. Stripes are for squares. They just scream 1986 Miami Hurricanes. I bet you have names on the jerseys too.

That's the exact photo I was thinking of...

…I remember seeing it (for the first time since the 80s) a few months back through a link at BSD, and I thought “When did Bono play college football?”

Hey, by the way, how’d that game end up for Miami? Fiesta!

by Eyeheartfreedumb on Mar 9, 2010 10:34 AM CST up reply actions

With each passing year, that game gets better.

Most recently, take “DA U” show on ESPN. The Miami players were all “We were TOTALLY the better team! We only lost because of turnovers!”

On a similar note, Penn State was TOTALLY better than Iowa last season because Clayborn’s TD was on special teams and, um, stuff.
