BLACK HEART GOLD PODCAST 26: BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH

Idesofmarch_medium
(T/F/J @matt_T)

With Todd Lickliter fired Monday morning, the coaching search rumor mill threatening to spin off its axle, and OPS's computer infected with the binary code equivalent of hepatitis C, HS is joined by Storminspank to discuss the names being floated and the fact that we really don't know anything about coaching searches and are essentially grasping at straws until Gary Barta reveals he has paid Mike Dunleavy $4 million per year for 13 years to be our coach. With that established, we move on to the Barbasol couple's unfortunate early exit from MARCHIFORNICATION.

Listen below or subscribe on iTunes and get them a day early.

I've got to know

Who sings the intro on these?

Those are the lovely dulcet tones of HS himself.

"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"

Is it wrong that I find humor

in light of Iowa Basketball in the fact that the M*A*S*H theme is entitled “Suicide is Painless”?

If you're on this site?

Then no, it’s not wrong.

"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"

That was kind of the point.

Before you respond, let me remind you: Brian Cook called me smug, which makes me the Obama of smugness. I'm basically Smugbama.

Suicide is

tonedeaf?

The worst part of the podcasts

is that for the rest of the day, I can’t get that damn intro out of my head.

my wife hates my coming to this site almost entirely for that.

Iowa will never be Penn State.

Iowa has basketball tradition. Iowa has an athletic department willing to spend lots of money to get a quality basketball program.

Penn State will probably hire Bruce Parkhill in three years.

This is a pretty good point.

Iowa may be as bad as Penn State now, but the athletic department and fanbase in Iowa City seem to care significantly more about basketball. Not to say that Penn State’s athletic department doesn’t care about basketball, but they know full well that money that gets spent on basketball is money that cannot be spent on football, and that just won’t fly.

I imagine that the next coach is going to be fully aware of what is expected of him. Reasonable fans know this isn’t an elite basketball school, but I think it’s safe to assume that an NCAA appearance in the next 3 (ish) years is going to be expected.

you can say the PSU AD doesn't care about basketball

because it’s a neverending spiral of suck. They don’t care, so the fans don’t care, and since the fans don’t care they continue to not care.

by Cairo on Mar 18, 2010 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions

All they care about is money.

As long as they make money, they don’t care and they can just look at the empty seats in the BJC and say “Football school!”

"Not to say that Penn State's athletic department doesn't care about basketball"

You don’t have to say it, but I will because it’s true. If Penn State’s athletic department ever cared about basketball they wouldn’t have built a freaking 16k seat airship hangar in a small basketball market (The Big Ten told us to leave Rec Hall because it was too small, we should have a built a new arena around 10k to match the fact that State College is in the middle of central Pa).

No, sir, Iowa is in much, much better shape than Penn State. Trust me on that.

I love the wiki page for the BJC:
The arena opened in 1995 and is the largest such venue between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

As a comedian once said, PA is Pittsburgh and Philly with Alabama in between. But he was wrong in one aspect: Alabama has more people.

it's a huge draw for concerts

Many years its one of the top 10 venues in the United States in terms of revenue. Basketball is secondary to its real purpose.

by Cairo on Mar 18, 2010 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions

Yup

The place is a generic concert hall. Giant Center in Hershey (The Bears’ arena) may be a better basketball court.

Might that change if, say,

Pitt ends up as a new member of the Big howevermany?

No

We had a basketball series with Pitt several years ago and the BJC still didn’t fill up.

Sorry about that.

I guess Pitt students only want to travel to State College for State Patty’s Day.

Also...

I already predicted Mas Casa’s Gall Bladder to pull off the shocker this year:

Mas Casa's Gall Bladder with the run-in during the MARCHIFORNICATION finals?!

Scandalous!

After listening to this podcast,

watching the first few days of postseason play (NCAA, NIT and CBI), and looking at our options, I STILL think VCU coach, Shaka Smart, is a name that deserves heavy consideration.
