Iowa Press Conference Open Thread: Good Night, Funnyman

Word on the street is that Todd Lickliter will not be in attendance for today's press conference; that would seem to indicate that this is not a strictly voluntary departure by Lickliter. So it goes.

What that means, though, is that there's one man on the mic for the entire time, the crotch-rockinest MC in the game...

Bartathuglife_medium
BARTA, BARTA, WHAT MY LAWYA

Anyway, the presser starts at 2:30 CDT. Here's a link to a live feed for it right now. In the meantime, let's share comments, laughs, and tears. It's been an awesome three years. No wait, no it hasn't. Let's do this anyway.

Its wierd watching a live video feed

When nobody is paying attention to it that is actually in the room.

I do know I am happy with this decision. I hope Iowa basketball becomes fun to watch again.

I have not celebrated a pro championship in my life.

Obviously

This is all a clever ploy by Bloodpunch to gather votes in Marchifornication. He knows Joe Pa represents a serious challenge and he needs all the face time possible. Do the Marchifornication by laws stipulate that Joe Pa now receive an equal amount of BHGP air time or attention? This could raise some serious concerns regarding the overall fairness of the process.

The program was going no where under Lickliter, but will it go even more backwards with him leaving? All I know is, I do not want them to hire another flash in the pan mid-major coach. Please get an assistant or former head coach with some real time-tested experience.

…and throw a lot at a Bruce Pearl or a Mark Few proven winner type…and if when that doesn’t yield any success we end up with someone intriguing like Chris Collins as a fun fallback…and if when that doesn’t happen we end up with the BYU coach. So basically I hope they at least make some noise with a big name or two before settling on another hopeful up-and-coming guy like Lick was. At least create a bit of a buzz in the landscape of college hoops with the search if nothing else. Okay, after all of that, I have one question...

…what the fuck have the last few months been about?
Bloodpunch apparently didn’t want to do his job or something, because it seems like the last few months have been about getting the fanbase and team on the same anti-Lick page. Other than the up-tick in Lick haters, nothing has changed.
We started the season with low expectations, and actually surpassed them in a few ways (Zero conference wins anyone?), so it wasn’t performance. He’s a nice guy (we established that) so it wasn’t something he did.
I’ve looked at it from many angles, and the only thing I see is that Barta didn’t want to pull the trigger in the fall, so he let us suffer through the worst season ever to show the rest of us what he apparently already knew. He could have cut the slide at two bad years, and we could already be rebounding as a program, but it appears he was too scared to go out on his own and make a fucking decision. He could have said “this isn’t the style of ball we want” but he couldn’t be counted on to make a fucking decision. Because then he’d have to stand by it.
I don’t know, I’m really not that bothered by it. I’m just being blustery (I’m not used to dealing with Coaching changes, and this seems like as good a time as any to be a windbag). This is all mostly tongue-in-cheek…
….but, FUCK! What the fuck were the last few months all about Barta!?

by Eyeheartfreedumb on Mar 15, 2010 4:30 PM CDT reply actions

And if you wanna look at it in terms of transfers...

…then he’s letting college kids make his decisions for him, which doesn’t seem like a good way to run a University’s althletics office.

I hear ya

but Lickliter did not exactly use this year to plant seeds of hope. This team was not one of those FUN teams to watch. I think he cemented his credentials instead, as being a guy players don’t really like and who is very pedantic as a coach.

1) Being tied with #2 Texas at halftime (before they went all epic fail the rest of the year)
2) Leading #4 Purdue at halftime – and the second half at Michigan State
3) Eric May’s steal and dunk against Ohio State
4) The complete domination of jNW at Carver
5) ….that’s all I really have

Good Coach, just not good for us

Lick may still be a good coach, but he single-handedly tore out my heart. I haven’t watched an Iowa game for a month. At this point, any change is a good change. I want my Hawkeye Hoops back.

Perhaps my best years are gone. When there was a chance of happiness. But I wouldn't want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn't want them back.

Agreed

He would make a great Assistant Coach at Solon High School with Acie Earl.

No, Lick can coach successful college ball

just not on this big a stage. Watch him resurface at an Indiana State or Buffalo and do just fine. Best of luck to him.
