Stanzi IS, by any measure, the Manzi

So yesterday, my tweenage cousin was diagnosed with diabetes, and was sent down to Iowa City for treatment. She's spent the last two days in the Children's hospital there as they begin her treatment. However, the best treatment possible is the smile brought by our own Ricky Stanzi. He sat and played Madgab with her and her sister this afternoon, bringing a much needed smile to the entire family.

While I've had nothing but good things to say about Stanzi up to this point, he is now the absolute measure of what I want in an Iowa football player. While he is a very good athlete and quarterback, he is a far better person. For a college kid to take time out of his day to spend time with kids at the Children's hospital is a FAR better measure of what he can and does mean to the Iowa program.

I realize this is nothing new, as evidenced by the wristbands and fanfare he's received for this very thing, but quite simply we don't recognize it nearly enough. The kids he spends time with, and their families, will never forget this simple act of kindness.

I tip my cap to you, Rick Stanzi. You are an honorable man, and any success you bring to the Iowa football program will pale in comparison to what you mean to those kids. Keep up the good work.

When I hear stories like this,

I don’t even mind all the Rick Sixes. They don’t seem to matter much at all in fact. Best of luck to your cousin, I hope she recovers quickly.

This guy is really remarkable

and you can see why the team follows his lead. Does he just hang out at the hospital? Amazing.

That's awesome

I’m may not think he’s a great football player, but he is a great person, and I’m thrilled to have him as part of the team and community.

Wow, just wow

Could we ask for a better person to be the face of our football team?

Stanzi

just gets it. At his age and at his point in life, if you get it, you definately have the upper hand in life.

One thing that seems to get lost in all

of the great things Rick does for kids in the hospital is that if it wasn’t for posts like this, nobody would know about it. He’s not doing it for the pub, he’s not doing it to make himself look good, he’s doing it because he cares.

Exactly

That’s the main reason I wrote it. He doesn’t look for publicity or recognition from it – but he should damn well get it anyway, and if by writing it on here I can provide a small measure of that, so be it.

uh...what?

Isn’t that precisely the kind of media attention we want in the football off-season? You’d prefer the kind that involves PAULAs etc?

2 possible headlines:

 - Iowa QB Spends Off-Season Visiting Sick Children in Hospital

or

 - Iowa Football Player Arrested on Drunken Driving and Domestic Abuse Charges

Maybe it’s just me, but the first one is the exact kind of attention I would rather see Iowa players getting…

False dichotomy, but the point is not invalid.

If Stanzi got just 1/50th the amount of attention

That Tebow got everytime he was in the same zip code as a sick/impoverished child (and don’t get me wrong the Chosen One’s humanitarian efforts were both prodigious and sincere), I’d be a very happy man. And it would do wonders for the recognition of our program.

Indeed.

Maybe Stanzi can work in some unlicensed circumcisions on his way to rescue Girls Generation.
