Offtopic: Arena Football is Back

So, not sure how many BHGP-goers will really care or not, but the only semi-professional football league that ever mattered is back, after a one year hiatus.

Star-divide

And, along with that, brings the Iowa Barnstormers back to their roost, in AFL1 contention again. I'm sort of excited. Being a CR native, and never getting to go see the Kurt Warner days of the Barnstormers because football isn't that big in my family, I'm going to try to make it to some of their games this year. And, in slightly-related news, Brad Banks is on the Orlando Predators roster.

Is it too much to ask

that just one Hawkeye QB becomes the starter on an NFL team. And does a decent job.

In 100 years, we'll all be dead.

Seriously

I mean, Seneca Wallace might get the starting job in Cleveland, which I imagine is almost as good as being a starting QB for an NFL team, and Brad Banks is playing Arena football? At least he’s playing for one of my favorite teams.

Hey now!
And, in slightly-related news, Brad Banks is on the Orlando Predators roster.

Talk about burying the lede…

Brad Banks is a holy figure around here, sir, and news of his doings is always worth a mention on BHGP.

(And I too am kind of excited about having the Barnstormers back in action.)

Ya Know!

I was sitting there reading the yada, yada, yada and then BOOM! Brad Banks reference. First off, you can’t be leavin the good stuff like that til’ the end (I only like doing that with red skittles). Also, last I knew he was doing a stint in CFL. Anybody know what happend there?

Where are they playing the games? I went to a few the last go-around and VETS would always be rockin’. I wasn’t old enough to drink then but I might have to take in the experience intoxicated this time around.

Wells Fargo Arena

The team has actually been back and playing there for a couple years now, they just were in af2 instead of the regular AFL. They actually were drawing pretty decent crowds too. They were one of the few af2 teams that did well enough to get asked to join the newly formed league.

Think of it this way...

I didn’t even know, and then BAM! I saw the article that he was brought on by the Preds. Think of it as an obligatory ‘articlebombing’ by Banks.

One downside to them being back at the AF1 level now

There will no longer be the hilarity of Timmy Dodge dominating games. Dude was a beast in AF2, it cracked me up every time I went to a Barnstormers game.

Wow, the explosions and perfectly thrown spirals.

That almost had as many exploding walls as Hockeybear had exploding cities, but I still probably won’t be watching AFL any time soon.

Hey Dolph, you look like I need a beer.

I'm looking forward to it

I started watching the Barnstormers years ago, then got tickets when Chicago got a team.
For my money, the best thing about it is essentially having basketball seating for a football game. it’s a fun minor league experience, and great if you have kids since you can afford to get tickets and food/drink.
My favorite memory; about 5 years ago I was watching the Rush play (no idea who anymore), the other team had just scored to pull within 7 and lined up unbalanced on the kickoff. I yelled at them to watch out for an onside kick. I swear to god, one of the Rush guys looked at me, started motioning to the other guys and they changed formation. And yes, they recovered the onside.

It never gets to be easy

In a somewhat related note...

The pride of Penn State, Anthony Morelli is on my hometown Milwaukee Iron roster. JC6, don’t give up hope buddy. You still got a future.

There are a couple Iowa dudes on the team.

Aside from Messrs. Filer and Tim Dodge, there’s Eric Rothwell and Pete Traynor (OK, I don’t remember him playing much).

But: Todd Blythe? BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Have to admit:

I did like Todd Blythe.

In other news, I went to High School with Tanner Varner.

Yeah, but why not a less loathsome Cyclone?

Like JJ Moses or Todd Bandhauer or something.

I hated Blythe.

A cursory Google search for "Lane Danielson"...

brings up (front page, no less) a link to what may be one of the greatest BHGP tags in history.

by mattbednar on Mar 11, 2010 8:16 AM CST up reply actions

I had a lot of fun with the tags in that entry of the Aughts in Review series.

ahahaha

I am so glad you pointed that out, I just went and looked through them all again. The one about Danielson isn’t even the best ISU one.

by NorseHawk on Mar 11, 2010 11:08 AM CST up reply actions

Indeed.

They are, to the best of my knowledge, factually correct. Yep.

I didn't realize Danielson owns ISU's receiving records:

RECEIVING YARDS:
Career: Lane Danielsen – 2,690 (2000-03)
Season: Lane Danielsen – 1,073 (2002)
