Un-fucking-believable
You can never really expect these things but… DJK?!? I’m at a loss.

I'm not surprised by it being DJK
I could never decide whether he was just eccentric and not a fit with the culture the coaches wanted or a headcase. Now I’m definitely leaning to a side.

Great just great.
A lovely story:
One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who didn't whine, nag or bitch. That would be me....
But that was a long time ago and it was just that one day.
The end
Well, I feel foolish
Kirk knew more than we thought he knew. I’m still a second and even third guesser at heart. But apparently the kid is not as clever as we all (or many of us) thought. This is going to really cost him a great deal…a great deal.

Not the note I'm sure he wanted to go out on.
Everybody makes mistakes, lets hope this embarrassment sets him on a better path in life.
When I grow up I wanna be like Koeppel Knievel
Based on what it says in the article
I doubt Kirk knew the extent of what was going on or DJK might have faced worse consequences that he did. He probably just thought he had a pot head on his hands.

Cuase everyone tells their parents
All their team mates dirty secrets
That's what scariest about the whole deal.
Also the fact that other players could go down in this shit hole… fuuuuck.
Not defending, because I have no knowledge of this particular situation, but "drug house" is a stupid and vague charge due to the way the law is written.
He may have had what you think of when you hear/see the term “drug house”… or it could mean he and a friend were smoking some pot when the cops came in… or it could mean any number of things in between, up to and including that DJK was actually LIVING in a house made out of crack rocks, quaaludes and vicoden held together with a hashish mortar.
Point being, it was stupid of DJK to put himself in or even near this situation, but until I hear damning evidence I’m not going to condemn the guy for what may be behavior that I engaged in during college.
…but god DAMN!
by Eyeheartfreedumb on Dec 7, 2010 10:46 PM CST up reply actions
Sounds like
it has something to do with living in a house where you know drugs are sold but doing nothing to stop or avoid the criminal activity. So even if he wasn’t selling the shit himself he still knew it was going on. And by not reporting it he was helping maintain the drug dealing in his home.
We should probably ask one of the many lawyers that infest the sbnation boards for a real explanation of what this means, but for now I’m assuming it’s something along those lines.

Investigators found more than $3,000 in cash, marijuana, cocaine and prescription drugs in the house, police said.
When you have cocaine and $3,000, it’s usually not because you were tootin’ that blow yourself.
"If you need a rah-rah speech at halftime, you’re playing the wrong sport." - Pat Angerer
I'd heard rumors about someone on the team being a cocaine user
but it wasn’t DJK..yikes…
"Johnson-Koulianos also allegedly had electronic media showing him in possession of drugs."
If there are pictures of him with cash in his mouth…I give up.
http://hawkcentral.com/2010/12/07/iowa-football-djk-arrested-on-drug-charges/
From your link...
They found marijuana, cocaine, and prescription drugs in DJK’s bedroom, all of which he admitted using, and for which his urine tested positive. Police also say they found electronic media (computer) with photos of DJK in possession of drugs.
Rumor from the hoopyball thread was that the photos also showed other football players doing drugs. Names were mentioned, but it seems appropriate to hold back on that pending evidence of such.
Apparently DJK WAS with The Program

DJK admitted to the police that he'd been using the drugs they found?
Dude needs to watch some Law & Order and learn about the right to remain silent.
According to the article he admitted to using marijuana.
A small bit of marijuana was allegedly found in his room.
He has a roommate and I’m guessing the $3000 and coke and pills were found in his room.
Even if DJK just gets possession misdemeanor
I think his draft status is toast. I’m pretty sure the NFL guys will take KF’s word that the guy is not ready for prime time.

What a massively disappointing turn of events.
Remember the footage of him with his parents on senior day?

But a place on the Iowa football team is not one of those rights.
I meant that Kirk couldn't Minority Report the whole thing
"I wish you luck with a capital 'F'" - The Real Elvis.
Not sure but
I think drug testing at the college level is random. At least it was for the non-revenue sport I was on back in the day. not sure if they can even do targetted testing unless someone fails a random. Either way, I think it’s likely Kirk & Co suspected something like this was up if DJK was showing up to stuff high or coming down, but they may not have been able to prove it. This would explain all the extra rules for DJK over the years, but if you can’t prove something like that you can’t really boot him from the team.

It’ll just have to be in the Himalayas after they sink towards the ocean and become the new tropics. And we’ll have to hitch a ride with that Russian billionaire.

We can still win the Jan 2013 MNC
They just need to install field turf on John Cusack’s boat. Because everything else will be under water.
I don’t think the Himalayas will work though. Big Ten game day weather is famous for being cold. But not that cold.

Can Ferentz force the entire team to take a drug test?
Is that in his power? I could care less about guys smoking some weed, but if there is widespread coke use we are in some serious shit and Ferentz needs to drop the hammer, bowl be damned.
I was under the impression up till now that random drug tests were a part of ncaa football
I was wrong?
If this thing is multiple players
then how is that possible? I worked at major university in NYC for years and oversaw 1100 students in my college and I knew within a day if someone was doing crazy shit. I knew everything. People talk. And that’s NYC…with all it’s distractions. In Iowa City if your coach doesn’t know when one of 120 guys, who you spend 6 days a week with…including travel, is “keeping a drug house,” then what the fuck does he know? Squat.
"I wish you luck with a capital 'F'" - The Real Elvis.

by justsomehawkeyefan on Dec 7, 2010 10:19 PM CST up reply actions
Why?
If there are a bunch of coke addicts on the football team, how can you justify NOT questioning Ferentz?
Do you think Ferentz would honestly go through the trouble of holding back DJK from interviews yet let a known drug issue exist on a team of his? C’mon let’s not all lose our senses here.
I agree.
But depending on the number of players who are involved with this, I don’t think Kirk can necessarily wash his hands of this.
People need to settle the fuck down.

I'm sure.
I meant that more in general than as a specific response to you.
Right now the only hard evidence we have is that DJK is in some deep, deep shit. As more gets revealed (or not), we can go from there.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
Yeah, that's a lot of IF.
It’s a big team, but it isn’t like half the team muled coke back after the Orange Bowl. Kids (especially high level high school athletes) do coke these days (it’s like the 80s all over again). I think it’s stupid… but nobody asks ME before they start snorting which limits my effectiveness.
I’d be surprised (honestly) if there weren’t 5-20 (at least occasional) cocaine users on every single BCS football program in the country. It’s out there.
Also, if these stories have been out there for two or three years (as I’ve seen mentioned) and DJK is just now getting busted for it, he’s done a great job of staying low key enough to stay off the ICPD radar (y’know, those guys who love to harass 65 year old ladies for carrying beer and taser Iraq War Veteran students… and who LOVE to arrest student athletes at every turn). So if those RUMORS are true, then people may have known, but I’d guess it isn’t as ugly as you may be envisioning.

Got into some recreational herbals of my own in high school, but got most of my jackass behavior out of my system before I got to college, when I realized no one would be there to bail my ass out if the law got involved. By the time you’re a legal adult you should realize illegal activities have real consequences.
I guess I should concede that his upbringing was much, much worse than mine for much of his life. To come out of the situation he was in, it was against all odds that he even got out this far and didn’t just end up dead or something. I do hope he learns from it and makes something of himself on or off the field. I still think he can, with his charisma and intelligence; like I said, I’m at a loss that he wasn’t smart enough to see this possibly happening.

I agree
with you on a philosophical level, but I can’t help but feeling like Eyeheartfreedumb. There is no logical basis for my feeling this way, but I’m not really all that bothered by DJK doing drugs. A lot of college (and grad school) kids do these same things, and many, many successful adults. This is not to excuse or condone what DJK’s done in any way; but in my mind, at least, there is a world of difference between being a recreational (or even habitual) user, and being a dealer. From what we know so far, it looks like DJK was the former rather than the latter even though he put himself in a bad situation by living with someone who might have been dealing.
None of this is meant to imply that I don’t believe that DJK shouldn’t be punished for his actions. He absolutely should be, he broke the law, and the repercussions will likely be quite severe. He has no one to blame but himself for this. I just have a hard time condemning him for doing something that I imagine a shockingly high percentage of his peers (college kids) also engages in. Again, that said, DJK broke the law and will (and should) have to pay the consequences.
I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.
And if he hadn't been living with a dealer,
he probably wouldn’t be in all the trouble he’s in now. Cops don’t usually do busts on your average user’s house.

- Davey Dave
Don't get me wrong.
I liked DJK and I truly hope he figures his shit out, but it’s ridiculous to say people shouldn’t criticize someone who behaves like this. If what you mean to say is that fans shouldn’t bitch and moan as if his actions have somehow impacted their lives personally, then I agree with you. Any fan who is delusional and egocentric enough to think they have personally been harmed by this should definitely get smacked up-side the head and sent to the corner. This is about DJK. Not the program (hopefully) and not any of us. But it’s also a damn shame to see someone waste talent and opportunities. So if you’re saying we shouldn’t criticize him for what he’s done then I can’t disagree with you more.
Obviously, he needs help, but you can only help someone who wants to be helped. College athletes have access to all kinds of resources from tutoring to drug counseling. And let’s not forget that a free ride at a good school goes a long way towards bettering your situation. If that’s not getting help then I don’t know what is.
I don’t think DJK’s problem is a lack of help. I think his problem is not taking advantage of that help. And if his situation turns out to be as bad as it sounds then what he needs now is to face the consequences of his actions and get his shit together. Call it tough love or whatever, but anyone who is given the kind of opportunities he has and then pissed all over them deserves our criticism.

DJK embodied what “never give up” means. It was hard not to look up to the guy. He was smooth, fun and when it came down to it one of the best fucking football players I have ever had the privilege of watching. I definitely looked up to him and goddamnit this is not the way I wanted him to go out.

I agree.
I remember as a kid how devastating Chris Street’s death was on me. This is obviously not comparable by any stretch of the imagination but as a kid you grow incredibly attached to certain players and when things happen to them it hurts.
This
is kind of like the whole Big Ben cases. I loved the guy and thought he was a damn good ball player. I was very disappointed to hear about the problems he has had but I still think of him as on of my favorite pro athletes.

I'm not personally affected by this...
but anyone who rapes people (some former Hawk players), or sells drugs/openly lives with drug-pushers, deserves all criticism they get.

Oh no doubt
I was just going on the fact that it is soul crushing to hear about something like this. I don’t condone anything people do like this just because I like them.

Forgive my mis-communication.
I wasn’t really disagreeing with you, Sash. My comment was aimed at dtnordgren’s original comment.

I agree
My point was more about people needing to keep things in perspective. DJK’s personal life is not even really our business. That being said, he is in the public eye so his actions will come under public scrutiny and criticism. And I think it’s totally fair to criticize his actions especially considering he and other athletes are role models for kids. Now we have to watch him go from being a role model to a cautionary tale.

Very poor decisions by him
that have cost him a draft spot and likely an NFL future. The real test of his upbringing and where the story goes from here is if he learns and turns it around. Hopefully he redefines himself and becomes better, and doesn’t follow a Domonique Douglass path.
If we were all defined by our worst moments, it would be a shitty life. Mine: DUI 10 years ago. I definitely learned and turned it around. Hopefully DJK does the same

Okay guys and gals the next time the coach benches someone maybe just maybe we might assume the coach knows what
he is doing. Looking at the article my guess he gets no jail time assuming he did not deal. He is done as a Hawk and that is sad but make bad choices suffer the consequences.
This doesn't follow
you’re making a HUGE assumption that Ferentz knew/had good reason to suspect DJK was doing drugs. There is no indication available as of now that Ferentz had any knowledge of this; DJK’s benchings/dog-housings, etc. could be wholly unrelated to this. We simply do not know. Any attempt, at this moment, to say that this justifies Ferentz’s treatment of DJK is nothing but post-hoc rationalization.

For those criticising Ferentz "if he knew what was going on"
He would be in an incredibly difficult position. You remember the backlash against his decision to bench DJK for the first series against Minnesota for undisclosed reasons, right? I don’t know why he did that any more than you do so I’m not going to insinuate anything other than to suggest that there was a huge backlash.
Furthermore, as several have mentioned, Ferentz is a father-figure for these kids. What did you old-man do the first time he figured out that you were looking at his Playboys? First time he caught you sneaking a Busch Light from the basement fridge? First time Mom “accidentally” washed your stash?
(Hypothetical Scenario) Now, for those of you call for the man’s job if he knew and didn’t kick DJK off the team. What would you do if you were in Ferentz’s position and in the wake of today’s incident you started to dig deeper into your players’ personal habits only to find that a Senior who stands to make millions in the upcoming NFL Draft was participating in similar activities as DJK? Kick him off the team? Suspend him for the bowl game?
Really think about how difficult of a decision that is. In particular, realize how much of a moral dilemma this would have to be for Ferentz. Next time you feel like criticizing a person who’s shoes you haven’t been anywhere near, think.
If he is a "father-type figure" to these "kids"...
then he should not feel any guilt or apprehensive-ness at all to benching them, getting them help, and eventually (in a case of repeated malfeasance) cutting ties with them.
DJK’s behavior sounds more like repeated, chosen, and criminal actions. Ferentz needs to try to get him some help once (maybe it happened earlier in his career). And after that, if DJK keeps on a bad path, cut the cord. If Ferentz can’t do that, then he should not be in a publicly-funded position that requires him to have supervision of 120+ young men.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool 72,000 of us twice, shame on us, and you, and KF.

First of all
They were Penthouses and I was sneaking Jack Daniels from the basement cabinet not some piss-water Busch Lite. Second, the fact that Ferentz has had such issues with DJK is what makes this so alarming to me. Because clearly Ferentz knew something was up. How much he knew is the question. I would like to think Ferentz suspected more than he could prove, because that might explain why his handling of DJK was limited to a few extra rules. But if he knew everything that DJK was up to and did nothing more than keep him fom talking to the press then to me this is unacceptable. Because the correct thing to do in that situation is to remove that behavior from the team (ever heard of being suspended for an “unspecified violation of team rules”?), and I don’t care what their draft stock is. Because the second you start making allowances for your star players to live outside the rules you’re just a slippery slope away from a program where it’s ok for players to turn in pre-written essays and get paid by boosters. It may just be me but I’d rather have a clean program and be god awful then a national champion with cheaters and criminals.
Now, before any one jumps down my throat I want to make it clear that I’m not calling for Ferentz’ head at all. Ferentz is an awesome coach, and I honestly think he runs a clean program to the best of his ability. However I do think some sort of explanation is in order because he clearly knew or suspected something was up.

Good Points
I’m just saying it’s not a cut-and-dried situation like many want to believe. In the book I read about John Wooden he reflects on a player on his high school basketball team who he kicked off the team because he caught him smoking a cigarette. IIRC, the kid had no other real issues but the real was made clear to the entire team at the beginning of the year and he followed through. His contemplation on the matter was for the kid personally and how it would alter the course of the rest of his life.
I don’t think the football program should be considered at all in these situations. In some cases it may be that removing the kid from the team would be to take away the most positive influence he has in his life and lead to a path of much greater destruction for him. It’s just that these are incredibly difficult considerations because you’re trying to do the best by all parties involved including the kid, the rest of the team, the university, the fans, etc.
On the other hand
Maybe Ferentz didn’t know – and had no reason to know – about anything about DJK’s transgressions befre the fact. The benching/general treatment could just as well be wholly unrelated to this, we just don’t know and you’re assuming facts not in evidence. Just because subsequent events seem to vindicate Ferentz’s position (and I’m not saying he was wrong or right), that does not “prove” that he was right to act the way he did before this.
I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.
Agreed
It’s definitely easy to imagine situations where kicking a kid off the team would be detrimental to the player’s overall well-being, but it’s also easy to slip into a pattern of enabling kids who know that they won’t be punished for infractions because they’re on a team. I think there’s a line that has to be drawn. Where that line falls I couldn’t really tell you. It would make no sense to kick a kid off the team for failing a test just like it would make no sense to ignore the problems of a kid who failed all of his tests. If a player is using drugs and hanging out with drug dealers (or doing anything that ridiculously unacceptable) that player needs to be off the team for at least as long as it takes to correct the behavior. And I don’t mean for just the sake of the football team. If a players got problems that are that severe they need to get help. Ignoring the problems does a disservice to the player as much if not more than the team.
Terrible.
I was having a great day. (My amazing wife went late to work today in order to stand in line and get me a few bottles of The Good Stuff). Now this is a huge black cloud. I still love DJK, but come on! How hard is it to not do anything illegal for 5 years? How can players continue to get in these situations? I’ll never get it. I am legitimately terrified to find out who all else was in DJK’s photo collection doing drugs.
Thank you to Urban Meyer for keeping us out of the national spotlight for this at least.
