I would be deeply satisfied to see Nebraska get screwed over tonight.

Can someone remind me...

…how they determine what weight the meets start at nowadays? It seems like most meets start at 125 but then last night’s didn’t. Di

Did they start letting coaches decide whether to start at 125 or a random weight?

by HawKCP on Dec 4, 2010 7:17 PM CST up reply actions

Coaches have to agree to start at a different weight.

If the coaches can’t agree which weight to start at, they do a random draw.

by rosalita on Dec 4, 2010 7:37 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks.

So the coaches could theoretically decided to start it at whatever weight they want?

by HawKCP on Dec 4, 2010 7:38 PM CST up reply actions

Yep.

For last night, you can see why ISU would not want to start at 125, given Iowa’s heavy advantage at the lighter weights. Which of course is exactly why Brands would be happy to start at 125 every meet. No agreement leads to a draw.

by rosalita on Dec 4, 2010 7:48 PM CST up reply actions

It was a good idea for ISU.

They got a win at 197 and were pretty close to getting another one at HWT. You never know how momentum could snowball for ISU after that… although the fact is there was no way to avoid the straight up maulings they were going to get at 125 and 133.

"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"

Probably would have been better for them if the draw had come out 149 or 157, though.

I’m sure Chiri’s a good kid, but that is a gaping hole in our line-up right now.

Really like the way DSJ fought back. He got a little sloppy and gave up the 5-pt move, but other than that he was damn sharp. Ramos is an animal out there. If Moore or Clark are better than him… woo. I think Ramos is going to be tough to displace with the way he’s wrestling. Really pleasantly surprised by Ballweg at 141, too.

Ballweg?

by HawKCP on Dec 4, 2010 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

Yep.

We actually have THREE Ballwegs. The youngest is redshirting, I believe. The oldest is the one you remember. He went at 157 as an injury replacement for someone for a while, IIRC… he struggled a lot. He was wrestling up a bit from his natural weight, but yeah, it was rough to see him out there. This Ballweg (Mark) appears much better.

I can't decide if I want Nebraska to win this game or not

It would be great for the Big Ten to get 3 teams into the BCS (kind of, I know they’re not in the Big Ten yet). But then we have to deal with NE fans coming off a Big XII title. I’m sure Delany would love to see a matchup of defending conference champs at Camp Randall next year. Actually, NE plays all three 2010 Big Ten champs next year.

Bowl predictions

Seems that growing speculation puts us in the Insight Bowl. What do you all think? If Oklahoma can get its shit together and get back into this game, we could likely get an Insight Bowl matchup w/Nebraska. Do we even want that?

by stewartom on Dec 4, 2010 7:58 PM CST reply actions

Fuck yeah I do

The only downside is that we’ll be going to a bowl that featured Iowa State and Minnesota last year…what?

by HawKCP on Dec 4, 2010 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

How do you think NE would feel?

They’d be ranked in the teens, be 10-3 and playing in a bowl against a 7-5 team that featured two 7-5 teams last year.

by PackerHawk on Dec 4, 2010 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

Isn't the Insight Bowl more "prestigious" this year or something?

I think they ante’d up to raise its profile. Call me old fashioned, but the “Insight Bowl” has a pretty low ceiling on prestige.

more because it is a bunch of jerks (Cheezuk and Chipper) and cheaters (Newton and James and his RangeRover) running it, not so much a problem with offensive football.

I don't care about the style of the game, Ross.

Oregon is owned by a bunch of people who make the college feel like a big, fake corporate shindig and their uniforms are so bad they cause me to fail to take them seriously. The uber-exciting Cam Newton’s father has admitted to trying to get a bunch of sleazy guys to pay him and everything around Mr. Newton appears to be under investigation by the FBI.

Considering that this game is also part of the BCS, I find it to be a sterling example of basically everything that is wrong with college football.

I agree that they're probably a better dual meet team right now.

VERY curious to see how they do in Midlands later this month, though. That should give us a much better idea where we stand as a tournament team. I like our ability to score points at 125, 133, 141, 157, and 184. I’m a little concerned about the other weights.

I really wish the Iowa staff

We had a plenty aggressive heavyweight in Erekson.

And guys like Keddy, Lofthouse, and Gambrall are fairly aggressive. They just have trouble finishing shots sometimes.

Rasing is definitely not very aggressive, though.

Rasing got aggressive last year with #1 Roshalt from Oky St

it was one of the loudest ovations that we heard in CHA during that meet last year…and it was during a loss. I’ll agree that he doesn’t typically get too aggressive…but it’s there.

The greatest heavyweight loss in Iowa history is this. Seriously…watch it you won’t regret it. If you’re going to be lazy…at least watch Part 2 at about the 4:20 mark…you won’t be disappointed.

by HawKCP on Dec 4, 2010 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

Well, he's CAPABLE of being aggressive.

The other thing that plays into that is that

in that match Roshalt needed a pin to tie the team score…so he was probably more aggressive than he normally is too. Rasing really started to notch it up at the end when Roshalt was probably a little gassed.

are probably tougher than the middle and the bottom of the Mountain West.

Obviously, the top of the Mountain West (TCU and Utah, and perhaps BYU) have probably been better than the best the Big East has had.

I could see TCU losing a couple next year, though I won’t say who until I looked at what the various teams had/have coming back. However, two losses could still allow the Frogs to win the conference and make the BCS anyway, so…

I don't think there will be as big a contingent of fans as there's been in the past...

But it will probably still be solid. There’s always people that just want to go somewhere warm. There’s always fans that want to head to a bowl. And by the time the bowl rolls around, a month will have passed — I imagine some of the negative feelings for this season will have dissipated.

The downside is that the Insight Bowl date (Tuesday, Dec. 28) isn’t exactly convenient. On the other hand, there are plenty of Iowa ex-pats in Arizona and California that would probably make the trip.

The Insight Bowl...

is actually the only possible Iowa bowl game that I might go to this year. I have a week off between Christmas and New Years, but I have to be back at work by January 3rd.

The Insight Bowl is drivable, and I should have a family friend to stay with in the Phoenix area.

At the beginning of this year, I would have been ticked off about Iowa being in the Insight. Now, and possibly against Nebraska, it could be great for me.

I was also going to say that, from an attention standpoint, it could be a good thing for Iowa to be in the Insight, because there are only two bowls that evening. But, it starts at 9 pm CT, so I’m not sure how many non-Iowans or Nebraskans would stay up to watch. Meanwhile, if Iowa made the Outback or the Gator, they’d probably be overshadowed by more high-profile bowls on Jan. 1.

Lose to Boise…lose to James Madison…steam roll the pathetic ACC. I’m kind of bummed out by this year’s college football landscape.

No one seems to be great…my suspicion is that the two teams who will be playing in the NCG happen to be the best teams from conferences that are worse now than they have been in quite some time. Wiscy vs TCU might be the most anticipated matchup of the BCS bowls and that could turn into a blowout if TCU can’t stop the run.

Nebraska is the only team

that I think Iowa can beat this year in a bowl. Florida, South Carolina and Missouri all can throw the ball and have speed in places we don’t. Carolina would be a close second but they could also just do a Minnesota and bull rush us into a oblivion. I don’t think it matters about anyone’s defense because our offense is about a 24-27 point max offense no matter what defense. Kirk has convinced them of that (see various second half lay downs for more info…)

Nebraska is really a finesse run team.

Oh, and if Stewart Mandel's Bowl predictions hold

the Big Ten could lose everyone of those games and I would be shocked if we won more than half. Horrible match-ups across the board with three exceptions: Wisky (v. TCU), Ohio State (v. Arkansas), Iowa (v. Nebraska). I would fully expect to win no more than 2 out of 3 of those good match-up games too but more likely go 1 and 3. I think Arkansas and Ohio State can blow each other out…that is a very wild one to predict. I think TCU could take Wisconsin but I would bet Wisconsin handles them pretty easily. And Iowa? Well, we all know what could happen there.

it really depends on the streingth of the SEC, and who has any SEC team beaten outside of the SEC to prove how good they are? Northwestern will probubly lose without there starting QB and Michigan State got a bad draw with Alabama, but even that game is winnable.

Not a fan of this bowl matchup

We’re essentially playing a conference game. I’m excited for next year’s NU-IA game, but not this one. We’ve already played in AZ this year as well. It’s always better to play on New Year’s day (regardless of the bowl) and always better to play an SEC team. I can’t imagine that Delaney is happy to see essentially a ‘conference’ bowl game. But we can’t complain. We’ve jumped better teams for years in the pecking order, and, of course, we lost our last game to the worst team in the conference.

by RodgersHasAHose on Dec 5, 2010 5:40 PM CST reply actions

Yes.

A game in Phoenix/Tempe does not help as much with recruiting as a trip to Tampa or Orlando or Miami.

As for the New Year’s Day thing, I’m not sure how big a deal that is if it’s one of the Jan 1 bowls that gets somewhat overshadowed. However, the Insight is at 9 pm CT on a Tuesday night, so that doesn’t really put us in the spotlight all that much.

Personally, I do like playing Nebraska better than I’d like playing Florida or South Carolina again.
