Where Does Stanzi Rank?
I'm not into shameless pimping or anything like that but I did feel the need to share this here as several readers of the Pants would likely miss it. I saw an article the other day with this title and didn't even discuss the issue. Here, after hours of research I did discuss where Stanzi ranks among all time Hawkeye great quarterbacks and attempted to rank them all. Please enjoy.

A lot of research and solid ranking order
Derserves more rec’s so more people see this. Nice job, sir
I spent half my life's earnings on wine, women & song. The other half I wasted.
But riddle me this...
Does Hartleib have a 128.7 professional career passer rating?
I think Ploen and Duncan may be criminally underappreciated by many modern Hawk fans.
So, thanks for reminding people of them.
I don’t remember watching Chuck Long, and I’d like to see the Big Ten Network start putting some of those games on, rather than make us keep watching Rose Bowls from the last three years.
I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.

Good points.
Ploen is considered one of the greatest players in CFL history – back when that meant something because the CFL actually paid better than the NFL in those days, so many top prospects went north for their pro careers.
And Duncan was a Heisman runner-up who stuck his tongue down Marilyn Monroe’s throat and won a Rose Bowl. What more can anyone ask for from a QB?

I would rank Stanzi #6 out of QBs
in just the Fry/Ferentz eras:
1. Long
2. Hartlieb
3. Tate
4. Rodgers
5. Banks
6. Stanzi
Ricky fuck your girlfriend or something?

You think he was better than Rodgers?

Ricky is a great person and a good college QB.
But no way do I think he is a better QB than anyone else on my list.
by HeartOfHawkness on Jan 2, 2011 8:54 PM CST up reply actions
In short, he gets a lot of credit for being the QB during a nice 3-year run in Iowa history but his play does not approach the others on my list imho.
1. Long = obvious #1 is obvious
2. Hartlieb = a 1st team all B10 QB, still holds a few individual game records; if he and Long had each others’ birthdays, may very well be #1 overall;
3. Tate = ‘04 B10 MVP and conference champ despite the RB apocalypse (goes a looong way for me)
4. Rodgers = co B10 offensive POTY w/ Nick Bell; probably would be above Tate if not for the aforementioned RB apocalypse of ’04
5. Banks = #2 in Heisman voting, would rank much higher if he started more than 1 season; arguably the greatest single season for an Iowa QB ever
6. Stanzi = best known for contributing the word STANZIBALL to the Hawkeye lexicon; in ’08 did a nice job handing the ball off to a Doak Walker RB and leaning on the defense; in ’09 did an even better job leaning on the best defense I’ve seen at Iowa and also did a good job in the 4th quarter bailing the team out of holes that he often dug himself earlier in the game; in ’10 had the worst defense out of his 3 years as a starter but was unable to pick up the slack despite throwing to arguably the best WR duo in Iowa history, which contributed to the worst record of his 3 year career

I love Brad Banks...
but I think Ricky may have been a better QB. Can you imagine what Ricky might have done with an AWESOME O-line, a money kicker, Clark, and the rest of that cast (Mo Brown, Fred Russell, CJ Jones, Jermelle Lewis)?
Of course, Ricky would never be much of a runner, and Banks was pretty good at the read-and-run or the sprint.

I think if we had any QB I ranked #1-#5 this year
We would be in a BCS Bowl fairly easily.
Matt Rodgers throwing to DJK and McNutt? YES PLEASE

For what it's worth,
DJK did pretty well setting records by catching passes from Stanzi.

Starting for 4 years helped a lot more
by HeartOfHawkness on Jan 3, 2011 7:00 PM CST up reply actions
In his first two years he had over 1,000 yards and 5 TDS
In his final two he had 1,500 and 12 TDs. So um…okay. Still trying to figure out why you can’t give Stanzi his due.
Maybe you are not giving Rodgers his due?
by HeartOfHawkness on Jan 3, 2011 7:43 PM CST up reply actions
Unfortunately
In your reasoning of why he should be ranked higher you said “probably.” It’s not a “probably” list. It’s a “what actually happened” list.
Huh? I said I would 'probably' rank Rodgers over Tate
if not for the ’04 RB injuries. What does that have to do with Stanzi?
And as for what actually happened:
Rodgers = Big10 Offensive POTY
Stanzi = Not even an All-B10 honorable mention in 3 seasons despite the TEAM winning so many games. Kinda telling if you ask me.
by HeartOfHawkness on Jan 3, 2011 9:38 PM CST up reply actions
Also, maybe if Hartlieb or Rodgers was the QB throwing to DJK
he has better numbers? It’s obviously impossible to say with any certainty, which is why it all comes down to personal opinions based on personal observations.
Let me be clear (again): I think Stanzi is a good college QB and a GREAT person. I just think he gets too much credit for the last 3 years.

For your sake
I hope that stanzi’s ex-girlfriend doesn’t see this list. BTW, I know that this question is way off topic, but is it permissible for us to use the word nutsack? If so, should nutsack be hyphenated?
What's your deal?

Are you calling me a nutsack because my opinion is different than yours?
If so then no, I don’t think it requires a hyphen but I might be wrong.

work’s been busy. No, I wasn’t calling you a nutsack — a poster irritated me the other day and thought about calling him a nutsack, but I didn’t want to cross ‘the line.’ As far as your list goes, whether I agree with it or not, you make a reasoned case for your point-of-view. Cheers!

I would probably put Stanzi at #1 QB of the Fry/Ferentz eras
if we were measuring overall patriotism.
This we can all agree on.
And yes, Ricky did fuck my girlfriend.

Not to denegrate the achievements of the rest of that list...
But there are only 2 other guys that have done what he’s done at Iowa, win a BCS bowl. And nobody has won 3 bowl games for us but Stanzi. I’m not going to daydream and play mix and match with players 30 or 50 years apart in age.

My analysis...
1…What is somewhat disappointing about Iowa football is that no QB has ever enjoyed any success at the next level. Since the Hayden era, only two QBs have ever started an NFL game – Long and Mark Vlassic. Vlassic should probably be a near miss on this list. His problem was that he was behind Long for all but one year on the depth chart, otherwise he would have put up some pretty good numbers. Frankly, the one year he did play he played well enough to edge McCann off this list.
2…I’ve always contended that Brad Banks was a one year wonder partly because Ferentz made a mistake in not finding a way to get him on the field the prior year, in lieu of McCann. You could tell he had talent in the couple spot appearances he made in the cupcake games.
3…I also think Gordy Bohannen from the 81 Rose Bowl should be on this list, also ahead of McCann. Didn’t they beat Nebraska, Michigan & UCLA all in the same year?
As for Stanzi, he is clear number 3 to me after Long & Hartlieb.

Thanks for pulling together all the info. Your analysis is interesting, and I won't pretend to know enough about Iowa football history to disagree with you.
I think it’s be worth mentioning Heisman runner-up in both Banks and Long’s “notable accolades” list — the invite is a pretty big deal, even though they didn’t take home the award.
But am I missing something here?
In 1939, Iowa finished the year ranked ninth in the AP Poll with a 6-1-1 record. Kinnick threw for 638 yards and 11 touchdowns on only 31 passes and ran for 374 yards. He was involved in 16 of the 19 touchdowns (11 passing, 5 rushing) that Iowa scored and was involved in 107 of the 130 points that Iowa scored that year. He played 402 of a possible 420 minutes that season. All told, Kinnick set 14 school records, six of which still stand over 65 years later.I mean, that’s pretty damn impressive quarterbacking in an era where there were 3-5 passes a game.
Finally, it is really hard to compare QBs from different eras. Imagine how much harder it was to pick out your receivers when everything was in black-and-white.
TFG
It’s true that Kinnick did all of those things but he was technically a halfback. By technically a halfback I mean he literally did everything.

anybody else
pretty stoked about the fact that Banks, Tate, and Ricky are all part of one decade of Kirk reign as headcoach?

Yes
Overall Iowa has been blessed with above average QB play in the HF/KF era. Probably a big reason for Iowa’s success in that time.

With a few exceptions
we have had exceptional QB play for a while. Some people aren’t real big on Nate Chandler but I would take him any day of the week as a competitor and winner.
I thought Nate gave us a nice year.
Of course, I may be biased because, up until this year’s Insight Bowl, the Chandler Outback Bowl was the last Iowa bowl I’d been to.
Or maybe it is because I like to a see a QB that is smart enough to avoid picks, sacks and fumbles by either passing it to Mo Brown, running it, or throwing it over the edge of the stadium to some people walking around in one of the hospital ramps.
/realizes Nate had 18 TDs and 10 picks in 2003, son of a gun’d

Those TD numbers would have been higher
by about 5 if his younger brother (who was a Frosh that year) had caught half of the jump balls thrown to him in the corner of the end zone. He caught none. So much for sibling chemistry

Sibling chemistry had nothing to do with that
Chandler the younger’s stone hands his freshman year, on the other hand…
