We are two weeks out from the January 9th start date---for me at least---of the P90X program. One thing I have learned from folks who have posted here at BHGP and in reading some fitness diaries by a few who successfully completed this program is that it might not be a bad idea for those of us who have not been consistently active to do some pre-program training. Why?
This will, if nothing else, allow for the clearing process of the production of lactate and other metabolites that build-up after extreme exertion. It is believed that lactate and metabolites are responsible for that burning sensation you feel in your muscles after an intense workout, though which exact metabolites are involved remains unclear. This painful sensation is nature's way of stopping us from overworking the body, thus forcing a recovery period in which the body clears the lactate and other metabolites. Of course, P90X does not recognize this scientific reality. P90X instead sees lactate build-up as an unfortunate byproduct of getting your ass in gear OR a reminder, of sorts, of just how bad we let our fitness get away from us.
Today is the beginning of my pre-P90X workout. It will consist of some light jogging, push-ups, and sit-ups. Nothing too earth shattering. Today's workout will last about 30 minutes. Today also marks the start of healthier eating. After devouring a considerable amount of cookies, pie, cake, homemade toffee, ice-cream and the like over the past four days, this could not come a moment too soon. Starting today, there will be no sweets in my diet for the foreseeable future. Alcohol, however, will remain in the mix throughout.
I have a few things to do in preparation for the start of the program:
- I purchased the P90X DVD package on-line from BeachBody.com today. It should be at my house in about a week.
- I am shopping today for an in-home pull-up bar. I am considering buying a free-standing pull-up bar unit. I read about them but have not seen them close-up. I am going to Dick's and two other stores that sell workout equipment. It will come down to price and footprint (how large the free-standing unit is). I want to buy something that will stand the test of time and rigor and fit effectively in my domicile.
- I am buying some new shoes. I have running shoes but there appears to be a lot of jumping and in-place exercise and running shoes are more effective for in-line running. I will not spend much and will likely buy a crappy basketball sneaker.
- Exercise (as mentioned above).
It is understood that a good many of you will NOT be doing P90X. That, of course, is totally cool and we want you all on-board! It is also understood that not everyone is focused on weight loss as a byproduct of their fitness effort. As I understand it, you bastards (and bitches) are actually trying to put on weight. This is a concept that for many of us is foreign and leaves us green-eyed. All the same, you too are very important to this enterprise (is this an enterprise, or a movement or a campaign? Who knows?). The point of this whole P90X thing is communal support and to reach goals.
Speaking of goals, mine are very simple: Complete the P90X fitness and nutrition program with total faithfulness. Where that lands me is anyone's guess and I am not going try to predict or calculate that result. Instead my goals are going to be DAILY goals that add up over a 90 day period. Will I miss a day? I sincerely hope not and will do all I can to not miss one. But if I do, I do. I will not try to make up a missed day the next day with greater vigor or beat myself up for having skipped. I will move on. Wait! I do have a peculiar aspiration embedded in all this; I want to become a double digit daily pull-up artist by the end of this thing.
So, with two weeks remaining to the start date I want to thank all of you who have chosen to get involved. It is very motivating!
N.B.: I have not yet undertaken the research of a charity for us to loop-in on all this. I am still on holiday and will attempt that upon return later this week.
I am still debating how I will unveil pictures of my progress. I have wondered if I should do an end reveal or a weekly/on-going log of pics. We'll see. Would like your opinions on this though.
My next post will be Janurary 2, 2011.
