Presumably there will be a front page post about this later, but here's what the Big Ten released today in a 11 a.m. Central press conference.
New Big Ten Logo:
Big Ten Division Names:
The Conference also announced 18 trophies to be awarded yearly. Each trophy is named after two historical greats. Here they are:
Trophies for the Championship Game:
Trophies for regular-season play:
Trophies for off-the-field excellence:
At first glance, it seems as if the Big Ten Logo, is setting itself up for an eventual expansion to 16 teams without an extensive logo redesign. This makes sense, as it's expensive to brand, and it seems that's the direction it appears things are heading. I could be completely wrong about this, but we'll see. Regardless of whether it presages a likely future conference expansion, it certainly is ugly. As I've said elsewhere, it looks like an attempt to look "future-y" . . . from 1985.
Regarding Legends and Leaders, it seems a bit generic to me. I'm glad they didn't go with anything too team-specific (Bo and Woody), as that would be obnoxious to teams in the conference that already feel overlooked. However, I don't think this is going to catch on with the national media very well. It's also not very memorable. The average college football fan knows what ESPN commentators mean when they say "SEC-west". I'm not sure that they'll understand as readily "Big Ten Legends Division". Time will tell on this one, and I'm not sure if there was much that they could do given the non-geographic nature of the division.
Assuming there may be a front page article on this at some point, but we can use the thread below to discuss for now.
