21-17: NORTHWESTERN GOES UNDEFEATED FOR FIFTH TIME IN SIX SEASONS

Lord, here we go again. Iowa's defense wilts under pressure for the fourth time in nine games this year. That's a pattern. Ricky Stanzi's endgame management is startlingly suspect for the fourth time this season. Also a pattern.

Meanwhile, congratulations to Northwestern for winning their one-game season. Bravo guys. Didn't see the "turn the holding call meter down" move coming--at the least, it's measures classier than injuring Iowa's best player on offense. Northwestern will now finish the season 1-0 with the win over Iowa.

We've had some strong emotions in the game thread and one dude creating a fake account so he can bitch about the moderators (PROTIP: we can tell.), so let's avoid the fight-picking here. Lots to complain about as far as on-the-field stuff, and so long as it follows even the most basic rules of civility, it's cool. Let it out here. It's okay.

Good team match the emotion of the competition

we have not been able to do it. I also think we have been plagued by realy bad plays at really bad times. But in general, I think we might have entered some of these big ten games with too conservative of a game plan. Maybe I am wrong. But that is my kneejerk reaction.

we diminish them because the win. Bellanca, college football is not logic and order. It is disorder and emotion and catharsis. No one would diminish a cripple? Not anyone from Iowa that I know. If they were truly awful, we would give them the most insidious disrespect: apathy.

I'll continue to call them it

because they are as arrogant as OSU fans, without the history of accomplishment. Look, you have to pick one or the other: either beating Iowa is a huge upset (sadly, one that occurs yearly) and something to trumpet; or it is the expected outcome of the two teams matching. Unfortunately, most of the interwebz jNW fans want to have it both ways: it is a huge upset and totally expected – they want to simultaneously be the tireless underdogs overcoming adversity and the team that is good enough that a win over Iowa constitutes an “upset”. At the end of the day, you’ve got to pick one meme you going to go with, not try to ride two separate horses to the same finish line.

New plan...

In order to speed up the ‘Mccarneyish’ dismissal of Fitzgerald, we need to talk up jNW in order to make them expect 10 win seasons. When that doesn’t happen, Fitzgerald will be fired and the next coach will have regular 12 game seasons. So….

Go jNW you’re the best, if you can beat us you should be able to win at least 10 games a year. You are too good for jFitzgerald. Fire him and get a better coach.

1 thing that is less a recruiting help..........

I am not in favor of turning down a bowl trip but there is one thing that is less of a recruiting help. That is having a team full of talent then coachiing them into to the middle of the pack, now that is how you run off recruits.

I love the smell of napalm in the morning...it smells like victory -- Lt. Col Bill Kilgore

by BadgerHawk on Nov 14, 2010 11:08 AM CST up reply actions

It’s evident that it really wasn’t a team full of talent; we just over-estimated them. They’re just not very good on defense. The defensive linemen are monsters, but the linebackers and corners aren’t good enough. At the beginning of the season I think everyone thought the D-line and Stanzi coming back meant that the gang was all back together and with the favorable schedule we’d win the league. Well, it turns out losing Spivey, Edds, and Angerer made a big difference to the defense.

Look at it this way: leaving out defensive linemen, would anyone on Iowa’s defense start for Ohio State?

by taliesin on Nov 14, 2010 3:21 PM CST up reply actions

If you want to say there’s “a team full of talent” that’s been coached into the middle of the pack, then you must think there’s a bunch of elite talent on the field that’s being underutilized. That’s clearly not the case if none of the players would start for an elite team.

by taliesin on Nov 14, 2010 7:19 PM CST up reply actions

Morris and Hyde are young.

And they wouldn’t start for an elite team right now, but maybe in the future. Prater might start for an elite team, and he has played well for us this year and most of last.

Sash and Greenwood have played quite well for us for two years, so it really doesn’t matter if they would start for OSU or not. OSU usually has better athletes, but some of those guys play like complete idiots at times. Sash and Greenwood haven’t been idiots lately.

Our defense is very talented, but I think this season shows how important healthy, quality linebacker play is. It would have been interesting to see (if he had not transferred) if a motivated Jacody Coleman would have made much difference at MLB.

I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.

-- Judge Smails

by WaterlooChazz on Nov 14, 2010 11:49 PM CST up reply actions

I don't disagree with any of that

There are obviously some good players on the defense, especially the safeties and the line, but a lot of the guys are young and/or middling talents. My point was, in essence, that saying the team was “coached into the middle of the pack” grossly overstates the overall talent level of the team. The problem (in retrospect) is not underachievement but inflated expectations. We all thought they could just reload at the linebacking position and it turns out it just isn’t that easy for a middle-class team like Iowa.

by taliesin on Nov 15, 2010 1:08 AM CST up reply actions

You're forgetting that...

A bowl game results in money to the conference, and each participating school gets an allotment for travel to the bowl game. If a B10 school turns down the game, the B10 does not get this money, and therefore, the money that gets split amongst each school goes down.

In the eyes of the admin of the B10, cash is king. And besides, I’d rather see Iowa go to a bowl game than turn it down.

Do me a favor and don’t ever insinuate that Iowa should turn down a bowl game if they finish their season better than .500. Come on. Have some dignity and pride in your school.

then your entire argument is highly speculative given that it’s based on hypothetically losing money on a bowl game that hasn’t been determined yet. Given that, at worst, Iowa probably falls to the Gator Bowl, I find it unlikely that Iowa loses $$ on this arrangement (we may only break even, but won’t be behind the ledger).

Further, there would be pressure on Iowa to accept whichever bowl bid it receives from the Big Ten which wants to maximize the revenue it would receive from placing more teams in bowls.

A lot of people...

talk about turning down bowl games. I know Gopher fans and media up there used to talk that stuff when they kept going to the Insight Bowl for about 3 out of 5 years.

But SpartanDan is correct, teams don’t turn down bowls unless they have an easy scapegoat reason not to go (like So Carolina and Clemson above.)

If you don’t go to the bowl game, then you don’t belong in division I/FBS football. Sometimes, teams go even when they lose money, because they know it is a celebration of their team and their university. For example:
see the link below for when Central Michigan still went to a bowl despite the fact that it cost them $200k.

http://ncaafootball.fanhouse.com/2010/10/13/dollars-and-nonsense-losing-money-for-priceless-exposure/?ncid=edlinkusspor00000003

If you turn down a bowl, you will never be invited to that bowl again, and your school and your conference look like bad cheapskates. It might even violate contracts/agreements that have been signed between the conference and the bowl. This is why nobody ever declines.

And while you may not see the hit it puts on recruiting, imagine the message it does send to recruits about your football team. “They don’t care enough about football to go to a bowl they have been invited to. They don’t want me to have a celebration as an athlete at their school. I’m not going there, I can just go to Wisconsin/Michigan State/Purdue.”

And right now,

Iowa is still in the running for a CapOne bowl, and (more probably) an Outback, a Gator, or maybe an Insight Bowl. I don’t foresee us being passed over to the point that we have to settle for a Dallas Bowl, or a Houston Bowl, or a Detroit Bowl.

Here is how I would say it will shake out right now:

1) Rose Bowl: Wisky/OSU/MSU.
(also, it is still posible Wisky or OSU could play in a national title game, or if we are not in the national title game that we could still get a second BCS bowl).

2) Cap One: OSU/MSU/Iowa

3) Outback: MSU/Iowa/PSU

4) Gator: Iowa/PSU/Michigan

5) Insight: Iowa/Michigan

6) Texas Bowl (Houston): Michigan/Northwestern

7) Ticket City Bowl (Dallas): Northwestern/Illinois

8) Little Caesar’s Bowl: Illinois

Totally agree

Twin Cities COMPLETELY echoes my thoughts. It’s important to lose (and win) with some dignity. Some here seem to confuse dignity (and outdated concepts like sportsmanship) as weakness and take up the call for ‘swagger.’

Take the idiotic and petulance-driven idea that we turn down a ‘shit’ bowl. If we turned a bowl down because we thought it was beneath us, we’d be the only ones looking like shit (sorry, I don’t buy the ‘losing money’ justification because it was argued in tandem with the ‘we need to swagger our dicks around’ argument). I lived for 30 years in So Cal and spent the past decade observing creatures with disgustingly ego-inflated and absurdly self-entitled attitudes — otherwise known as Trojan Fans — and it’s a pretty ugly sight. I’ll take a National Championship any day, but not at the expense of humor, humility and dignity.

Completely and utterly wrong. Clayborn, Binns, Ballard, Klug, and Daniels are the only reason we stayed in the game. These guys were on the field for 3/4 of the damned game, our coaching staff did nothing to help them out. Ferentz and O’keefe were much too conservative in the first half and in the fourth quarter they did absolutely nothing offensively to keep the defense off the field.

You have to get your defense breaks. You can’t expect the defensive lineman to single handedly generate a pass rush. It’s amazing that the guys were generating a pass rush up and until the fourth quarter. Norm never blitzes and never sends anyone else to blitz either. The first time they blitzed in the game they sent Morris up the middle and he got a -9 yard sack. Imagine if they had sprinkled that in a bit more throughout the game. Blitzes are high risk but they generate pressure and cause mistakes. Dan Persa was allowed to sit back in the pocket and throw 5yd completions all over the field because we didn’t blitz until the end of the third quarter.

by Zachary Scott Clary on Nov 13, 2010 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

He sat in the pocket quite a bit. Yes he did make a lot of throws on the run and scramble quite a bit. He wouldn’t have been making those runs though if an extra linebacker is set up to spy him. Instead we play the same defense we do against every other team we’ve played and Northwestern took advantage of it.

Ricky Stanzi’s end game management was suspect? Are you fucking kidding me. He threw one bad pick and he gets called out for the coaching staffs atrocious play calling and horrible gameplan? On the last drive of the game Stanzi hit three or four people right in the hands or chest and they dropped the damn ball. I believe he hit Koulianos, Cheney, and Robinson who were all open and still dropped the ball.

This game is NOT Stanzi’s fault. Northwestern matches up against us so well because they use the up tempo no huddle offense and throw nothing but 5 yard completions all game long. Our defense is set up to allow this kind of thing. We waited until it was too little too late to try and send extra linebackers to blitz. It doesn’t help either that our CB’s are playing 5yds off of receivers so the 5 yard completions turn into 5-10 yards completions after the catch and run. The gameplan for jNW was so atrocious it’s amazing to me. They do this same shit every time they play us, and we continue to allow it to happen. Sometimes the offense has got to be given the chance to put away games early.

This coaching staff has been outstanding overall and its just seems crazy when we are in the middle of a decent season (which could be better) to start calling for heads.

I am critical of this game but their coaching was suspect at Arizona and against Wisconsin also. Clock management has been an issue, and so has situational playcalling. As far as today’s game I would have to call them out for the overall gameplan. They played the game right into Northwestern’s hands.

by Zachary Scott Clary on Nov 13, 2010 3:47 PM CST up reply actions

its so easy to sit here and say

that we played right into their hands.. Give me a specific example.. We are Iowa, we set up the pass through the run on offense.. its good for 8 wins per year and we are in every game giving as an opportunity to run the table when the kids execute right. this is the strategy that has produced good winning teams for years and today the 18-22 year olds we depend on did not execute well enough…

I will say

that our defensive scheme/philosophy needs some adjustment when playing pass-spread teams like Northwestern. Bend-but-don’t break works really well when we have top-level LBs who can cover WRs coming across the middle. But it really works against us when we don’t. This was a problem versus Arizona and Indiana and obviously today. The dink and dunk passes get first downs, which keeps the defense on teh field, which wore us out by the end.

All that said, I freely admit I don’t know what the answer is. I just know that continuing to do the same thing against teams like Northwestern is not working.

Disappointed

I will not complain about the game, I only saw the 2nd half. I will just complain about this season as a whole. I feel like it is a borderline disappointment. Now if we beat Ohio State which we rarely do, then maybe that salvages it to some extent.

Coming into this season, I thought we would lose @ Arizona and @ Michigan going 10-2 on the way to the Rose Bowl. We beat Michigan which was a nice surprise to me but we lose to Wisconsin which makes me still sick to my stomach.

All I can hope for is we win out the reg season and our bowl game and I guess I just have to be happy that I didn’t have to spend 2k to go to the Rose Bowl. I will still think it is a disappointment, but I guess our Hawks will never be able to win with high expectations.

I'm sick over this...

This is the most talent we’ve had in a long time. Certainly the most on offense in years. They just absolutely ran and hid that last half of the 4th. And to NW again, that makes it 1,000 times worse.

PERSA, was the entire difference in the game, He went rope-a-dope on us in the 4th and absolutely gassed us. I knew it was over as soon as we punted it back to them up 17-14. We haven’t gotten a big stop in the 4th all year (Indiana was a gift). Imagine if Belcher catches that ball last week?

by RodgersHasAHose on Nov 13, 2010 2:48 PM CST reply actions

Dan Persa is the most overrated QB I have ever seen in my life. The announcers were gushing over him so much I wanted to punch each and every one of them square in their stupid faces. The guy has no arm. They talk about him being accurate… all he does is thrown dink and dunk high percentage passes all game long to guys that are wide open. Our defense made him look more like Dan Marino than Dan Persa. The CBs were giving their receivers huge cushions all game long and they let Persa do what he does best, and that’s run around and throw girly little 5 yard completions.

by Zachary Scott Clary on Nov 13, 2010 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

by Third Generation Hawk on Nov 13, 2010 2:57 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, he does suck,

He just got out of about 5 sacks, picked up about 6 first downs scrambling, and hit the winning touchdown throwing off his back foot to the outside shoulder of his receiver. If they don’t have Persa, we win 17-7

by RodgersHasAHose on Nov 13, 2010 2:59 PM CST up reply actions

He gets away because he’s so damned small, and when he runs he generally has huge holes to go through because Iowa is trying to either defend the pass, or they don’t having anyone spying him because they refuse to do anything but play straight up cover 2 most of the game.

by Zachary Scott Clary on Nov 13, 2010 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

The reason I know that Clayborn didn’t injure their QB’s foot, is because Clayborn didn’t touch him. In fact, Clayborn didn’t touch anything all afternoon.
And if I was KF I’d tell everyone on our O-line and D-line to find their own way home. Because they sure as hell didn’t show up to the game. And I’d make KOK ride home on Greyhound.

by Zachary Letzring on Nov 13, 2010 2:55 PM CST reply actions

Didn’t show up. Are you fucking blind? Clayborn, Binns, Ballard, Klug, and Daniels were the defense most of the game. The linebackers didn’t do shit. Hunter made one good play and got dekleated two times by a running back named fucking “Trumpy”. I would love to see you go out and play d-line for Iowa. Those guys are expected to single handedly generate the pass rush for the defense and the coaches never give them any help. This is the first game this year that I have seen them get substituted for any substantial amount of time.

The coaching staff played this game right into jNW’s gameplan. They wanted to play dink and dunk all game and to control the clock and they got their wish. Ken O’Keefe was too conservative for the entirety of the first half and Norm Parker and Phil Parker failed to dial up blitzes early in the game to give the defensive line some help.

It sure sounds like he is assuming he could. He fucking said they didn’t show up. I thought it was the best game I saw the d-line play all year. They generated a pass rush up until the beginning of the fourth quarter and got winded because the Parkers didn’t bother to give them some blitz help until Northwestern was already in scoring position.

Neither of those things really translates to equity on the field.

I disagree. Clayborn is getting double and triple teamed throughout games. Obviously he isn’t going to get the numbers he did last year but in watching him he still is consistently getting penetration and pushing blockers back into the QB. He isn’t getting the numbers but despite being double and triple teamed by every team we have played he still is generating pressure. On top of that you have to factor in that because Clayborn is getting all of the extra attention guys like Klug, Ballard, Binns, and Daniels are getting more one on one situations.

Try being the star without Daniels, Ballard, and Klug next to you.

Ryan Kerrigan is the only player of note on OMHR’s defense. He gets the same amount of attention as Clayborn and his numbers have been outstanding. The best players on every team get the most attention, but the best players also rise to the challenge. This is not to say that Clayborn isn’t a special player, but he has not performed to the hype that was bestowed upon him before the season started.

You can’t question Norm’s ability to produce a high quality unit year in and year out…. But because of his health and the demands of this job, it’s a fair question.

KOK has run the “score when you can and don’t make mistakes” offense for 12 years. No one on this thread can argue that we just don’t put teams away like we should, aren’t as aggressive as we should be and don’t exploit opponent Defenses like we should.

Ken O’Keefe needs to go. He’s the weak link in the coaching chain. Norm Parker is solid despite his health issues and Ferentz is a great head coach. Ken O’Keefe though is too conservative when he doesn’t need to be and is in my opinion on of the worst situational play callers I have ever seen.

by Zachary Scott Clary on Nov 13, 2010 3:19 PM CST up reply actions

KF is a good head coach

Sorry to blaspheme, but a GREAT head coach can see deficiencies and address them. This has not happened in twelve fucking years. A GREAT head coach can adapt and change as the situation requires – again, this hasn’t happened, either.

He does have a GREAT head coach’s salary, though. (I know, I know)

Life is hard. It's really hard if you're stupid.

by Bluzmn on Nov 13, 2010 3:58 PM CST up reply actions

Ferentz...

I don’t normally whine about him. And I know that he is more calm and collected than the average human. But I was a bit frustrated that he didn’t seem more ticked off today. We had an awful first quarter and a worse fourth quarter, and he stood there and watched. We all knew Persa was jNWs main/only weapon, and we let him get 300 passing yards, and several key first downs rushing.

Last week, we had a pretty-bad first 3 quarters, and an IU mistake gave us the game.

I don’t want a jerk or an idiot for our head coach (sorry, Bielema, Urban, Saban, Miles, Mack, Carroll, etc). But the best coaches usually don’t let their best teams play flat for two weeks in a row. And if we make it three weeks in a row, we will get roasted at Kinnick by those OSUcrooks just like the bad old days.

Kirk, I like you, but inspire your team and get them to clean up some mistakes if you want me not to call you overpaid.

I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.

I'm not sure what the answer is

But I definitely like the way you’re approaching this. Generally we just see the “X MUST GO” people come through. I do agree it is a discussion worth having, and just because there were no changes after 06 doesn’t mean maybe there shouldn’t be. I agree that the biggest problem with Norm is simply his health. I don’t question his coaching ability at all, but at this point it may be best for him to give up coaching so he can tend to his health a bit, much as I would hate to see him go.

I'm not disagreeing with that

I’m just saying his health seems to be going downhill ever quicker. I think we are definitely a different defense without him around, even if he’s still involved (see Wisconsin).

I think

this season has been disappointing but to look at coaches who have ultimately produced excellent results with mediocre talent over ten years and say after a few VERY CLOSE losses that they don’t have what it takes to get it done is a bit too fast for me… I will say again what I have said ten times in this thread, when you depend on 18-22 year old’s to “be perfect” prepare yourself to be disappointed. It is college football and it is tough to stay perfect, see TEXAS and FLORIDA who are both underachieving this year with far better talent.

Oh I'm not calling for heads

I just said I agree that the discussion is worth having. Not going overboard about, but having. However, I will also say I do think our defensive gameplans against these dink-and-dunk teams is not very good. Our defense in general is very good, but against the Indianas and jNWs of the world, we have to do something different.

by Brock8144 on Nov 13, 2010 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

I'm unsure if I should contribute to this discussion . . .

but I think that everyone would agree that among our coaching staff’s many strengths, player development is prominent. Whether adjusting or situational management could be better is the subject for debate, right?

Talking to a friend today, I said that Ferentz and company spend months and months developing great chess pieces, and then insist on playing checkers.

But let’s not talk about the salary, okay? We’re clearly getting more than Iowa, historically and talent-wise, should expect. Whether our coaching could make an over-performing team over-perform even more is the question, not whether our coaches are good. I would like Iowa to take a step to the next level, but even if we don’t, having a perennial top fifteen team is awesome . . . and paying what it takes to keep the coach responsible for that around is money well spent.

by The Final Gun on Nov 13, 2010 10:18 PM CST up reply actions

We won't talk about salary

because it’s irrelevant. But there is a troubling tendency developing. KF’s philosophy, as has been noted ad infitum, is based on execution, i.e. he doesn’t believe that another team, comprised of college kids, can reliably out-execute a well-disciplined team for 15-20 plays in a row. And, in general, this is correct. But this philosophy meets its match in a team like Northwestern, one that is perfectly suited to countering our overall philosophy. Offensively, Northwestern is not a home-run team, they look to get 4-5 yards per play. The only difference between us and them, is that they look to do it through short, controlled passes rather than power runs. Northwestern faces many of the same hurdles Iowa faces, and Fitzgerald is aware of that and he tends to redshirt a lot of his players and develop them slowly, they only see the field (usually) after a number of years learning his system. As a result, Northwestern’s offense is well-tuned to beat our defensive, and general team, philosophy: they have players well-schooled in a philosophy that emphasizes patience and taking what’s given, not going for a kill-shot too soon. It is an indictment of KF – and I am not calling for scalps – that he does not realize this and seems unwilling to adapt to the realities of the teams he faces, instead he tends to treat every team we face as variation on a theme, regardless of the differences between ISU, Penn State, OSU, Michigan and Northwestern, etc. More often than not, KF’s philosophy/approach works, but when it doesn’t, it seems like we are left high and dry with no back-up plan to compensate.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

by HoyaGoon on Nov 14, 2010 1:58 AM CST up reply actions

Why can't we run a two minute offense?

I haven’t seen Iowa handle time management well since Ferentz took over. Love Kirk, but is this so hard to learn? Stanzi turfs the ball late in the first half with :39 left and two timeouts, costing Iowa another chance at a touchdown. That four points would have looked pretty good at the end of the game, wouldn’t it?

Ah, the sweet taste of victory.

A familiar flavor when Northwestern and IOA meet on the gridiron.

Why do I spell the name of your university without its “W,” you ask?

Because the W, once again, belongs to Northwestern.

After listening, as usual, to you IOA fans getting too big for your britches, making designs on the Big Ten title you don’t come close to deserving, your team lays yet another egg against the Wildcats of Northwestern.

Your quarterback is once again exposed as a never-will-be, your defense as lacking the tenacity to focus every week, your team as incredibly overrated.

I really hope we didn’t hurt your boys.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I understand Ferentz’s philosophy. These are 20 year old kids, and we can only practice 20 hours a week. So we are going to play a fairly basic offense and defense, execute it well, and capitalize on the inevitable mistakes from the other team. But it doesn’t work against NWU. We are 1 and 5 against them. At some point you have to evaluate yourself and make some changes.

I think that we are all disappointed.

Hopefully calmer heads will prevail (mine included). Here is what I saw.

1) A metric ton of missed (or disregarded) holding penalties by the NW Oline.

2) A defense that isn’t what we thought it was. Clayborn is either getting doubled, or has regressed…and if he is getting doubled, I thought the rest of the line was good enough to make teams pay for it. A linebacker core that is very average…and admittedly hurt (losing Tarp really really hurt). A secondary that plays so much predictable zone cushion that opposing offenses know EXACTLY what to do with it.

3) Ricky. My opinion is that the coaches know that he has some magic when it counts, and that he has the arm to get it done. Somehow, someway, he makes crucial mistakes that are hard to overcome, at terrible moments. He often misses his man, sails balls, holds on too the ball too long, stares down receivers, etc…Playing DI big ten QB is incredibly tough, and his record is pretty damn kick ass. It seems to me that the coaching staff is afraid of the Stanziball (stanziscramble, stanziballslipoutofhand, stanzietc.), and as a result, they make their playcalls accordingly.

4) Aforementioned playcalls. I would need to rewatch the game (which sounds flat out masochistic) to see if this is truly the case, but when we get a few good runs, and then follow it with a PA, then the results are pretty nice. Problem is, is doesn’t seem like we run the PA very much at all. What is the point of having a top notch running game, if we can’t use it for misdirection?

5) Clock Management…nuff said.

6) Dumb luck. That went our way lots of times last year, not so much this year. Of course, the NW game last year was when that seasons dumb luck wore off, eh?

There, my 18 cents.

by persecuted hawk on Nov 13, 2010 3:26 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Look on the bright side. Instead of getting barely any credit for beating an overrated team from the ACC with a gimmicky offense, this year we’ll get to pound on a top 25 team from the SEC in the Gator Bowl, since the SEC is sooo deep and doesn’t have overly inflated records from only playing high school teams and the ACC.

If Kirk Ferentz and Norm Parker are such great coaches

Then why the hell does there defense always play 10 yards off of there receivers, that is why they lost today, and that is why they should of lost last week against Indiana, and that is why Iowa will never be a championsip team!!! They are great practice coaches, but horrible game time coaches when they need to make adjustments. New coaching staff is needed immediatley if Iowa ever wants to play in the national championship game, these coaches will never get it done!!! And these are all facts!!!

by Hawkeye23 on Nov 13, 2010 4:26 PM CST reply actions

Dude

This is the most successful coaching staff in Iowa history. Will we never play for the NC? Perhaps. However, it will not be because of these coaches. There are far worse coaches that have won NCs (see: Les Miles). Maybe Iowa just isn’t in the top tier of college football. So be it. These are good coaches.

I can see

you are very emotional about this. I will just leave it at this. Ferentz has taken us to multiple Jan. 1 bowl games, 2 BCS bowls and resurrected a program that was at rock bottom by the end of the Fry era. The losses to NW are tough on the stomach for sure, but do you really think with the end results of most years being a New Years bowl we could be doing better? I honestly don’t. Ferentz is one of the most respected coaches in the country for a reason. The team just laid an egg today.

by Quinn Early: Motivational Speaker on Nov 13, 2010 4:53 PM CST up reply actions

And last week

and 5 of the last 6 against jNW. His point is valid. Just because “this is how we do things” does not mean we can’t make adjustments. Something about repeating the same behavior and getting the same results.

I agree with you...mostly...

but while it was cool to sit back and say “here is our defense…no tricks, no surprises…we are just gonna do our thing…and do it so well that you will fail” when it was working, it appears to be stupid when it isn’t. Good coaches will find a way to scheme against a defense and set up an opportunity for their players to win. I am not completely agreeing with 23, as while I think that they really aren’t making adjustments…it is out of stubbornness, not stupidity or lack of coaching skill.

@ Nytewind

I think Ferentz kept a Fry assistant or two. Carl Jackson. Maybe one more.

Certainly, Ferentz has work to do to overtake Hayden in many peoples’ minds, and he did take us to the #1 ranking for awhile. But Ferentz has taken the program to some great heights (the Orange Bowl win, and three straight years of top-ten finishes). Their overall winning percentages are very close (within about 2%). Ferentz is 88-57 at Iowa, and Fry was 143-89-6.

It is difficult to pick one. Fry was more flamboyant/lovable, but I remember more of the Ferentz years.

The sudden disappearance of our offense

has been the most disturbing part of the past two weeks. Whatever else happened, up until the Indiana game, we were putting points on the board, but we seem to have gone inexplicably conservative lately. And, while I’m not calling for KOK’s head, his playcalling at times seems perplexing. Take the first half today. In the first quarter, when going into the wind, it seemed like the passes we were callling were almost all deep throws that are more difficult in the rain; then, in the 2nd quarter, we start throwing check-down and shorter passes, even though we have the wind. I understand having to alter gameplan/play for weather conditions, but it seems like ours were the EXACT OPPPOSITE of what one would think were coming given conditions.

The 4th-qtr pick, however, was entirely on Stanzi as he really seemed hellbent on going for it all on that play despite having options open underneath.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

Maybe Bad Rick decided to not make himself so obvious?

Or, I could just point out that there is a startling inability to develop QBs once they hit the field. They win the 1st season, then regress after each progressive off-season with possible exception to McCann. Stanzi’s L column has increased every year. Look at JC and Tate. Maybe we should be thankful that Banks had that one great year and Chandler only started for a year.

Yes, Stanzi has improved on TD-INT and completion, but the game management and je ne sais qoui have dropped off.

@Kurthy

KOK and Ferentz don’t make huge changes in the offense, and so when we have a QB who starts for more than a year, other schools (especially Big Ten schools) make adjustments. I don’t know why it seems like the lesser schools (jNW, Indiana) seem to play us closer than the others, but…

The offense is not to blame

could they have sealed up this win? Sure. But that is true in every game. For 1/4 of this game the conditions were awful no matter which way you were going. Then, it turns out, the wind made a huge difference. Today we learned why KF always wants the best O-line and running game he can create. Passing in the weather than can sometimes crop up in the Big Ten is a crap shoot on some days.

But, defensively, we run the perfect scheme for jNU’s offense. We played heroically from middle first through early 4th quarter. But, We never left base D and by the time we did, it was too late. We are very short on the depth chart with DBs it now appears, and throw in the thininig LB corp and you got a disaster in Evanston.

Having said all that, I think KF has had a bad year of Xs and Os. It happens. He was caught off guard on the faked punt. He got away with a too-early shut down against Penn State IMO. He played that Arizona game with too few seniors on special teams, and that can be debated but I would have gone that route to stabilize things. But today, he did what he has done in every close game he has coached in the past three years…he handed the game to the defense. I was okay with it today. We had a 10 point lead with 10 min. left. We should be able to shut that down. We couldn’t and that is that.

I belive we are capable of anything next week. We could destroy Ohio State or get destroyed or win close or lose close. That is this team’s identity. Unpredicatable. At this point, you live with the Outback Bowl, hope for a good opponent and clobber them to create momentum for the young guns. That’s the revloving world of college football.

Agree mostly...

But the Stanzi(noun) has to be accountable for at least a portion of the fail pie. The drive killing sack (get rid of the ball), the ball falling out of his hands (who does that happen to?), and the terrible INT (blind spot much), killed three drives. If one of those drives results in points (or at least more time off of the clock) then I think our defense isn’t put into such a pressure spot.

by persecuted hawk on Nov 13, 2010 5:14 PM CST up reply actions

but then you have to also look at missed blocks and dropped passes. Those might shift the blame off Rick and onto someone else, if we’re going to assign blame to individuals.

by rupertj on Nov 13, 2010 5:16 PM CST up reply actions

Well, to say it was a team loss, really makes it hard to make adjustments...

Coaching was a big part of it…but those are individuals too. I didn’t see too many bad missed blocks. And there were a number of dropped passes (especially late). However, the QB always has to also share in dropped passes. If the receivers are not accustomed to getting the ball in predictable spots, then it makes it harder to catch. I think that DJK and McNutt (and Reisner) are better receivers than many, many teams. I don’t think that Stanzi is in the same echelon as the best QBs…comparatively. Not saying that he is bad, but he is essentially a three year starter, and we use the term “stanziball” for a reason.

by persecuted hawk on Nov 13, 2010 5:37 PM CST up reply actions

I read just a tiny bit of the pregame thread...

SMA predicted that we would make some surprises with the D game plan (like DE’s dropping into coverage).

We must establish a game-time red phone hot-line from SMA to Norm and KF.

Defensive adjustments were just not there. The LB’s were in serious trouble. The nickel play put in Q4 was too little too late.

by iowabeakster on Nov 13, 2010 5:32 PM CST up reply actions

to thier credit

we did drop Klug into coverage on at least two occasions that I noticed. One time, Persa scrambled and Klug tripped in an effort to chase him…it was inside the red zone. The other, they threw wide.

by StoopsMyAss on Nov 13, 2010 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

Stoops, I love ya

But you seem to have a blind spot to the idea that KF is adaptable, in-season. The unfortunate truth is, there is no evidence to date that this happens. Every week, it seems, we sit here in the comments and expect KF to understand that this year’s team is different from the past few years, that we no longer have an elite defense and spotty offense. We confidently expect offensive innovation, five-wide sets and an open playbook, only to be left bewildered when it doesn’t happen, when Ferentz plays it “safe”, turtles up the offense and asks the defense to win the game. We’re ten games into the season and, regrettably, the defense has shown that it cannot accomplish this. It’s not a question of fault, we’re decimated and young in the LB position and the Dline hasn’t quite performed up to expectations. But, at a certain point, it is a failure of coaching to acknowledge where our particular strengths and weaknesses are. Sadly, Ferentz seems too determined to play 2010 like it was 2009, ignoring the reality we see on the field every week.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

by HoyaGoon on Nov 14, 2010 2:16 AM CST up reply actions

This is my number one criticism of the coaching staff

There is a clear lack of adaptation from year-to-year. KF and company just keep trying to force everything into their preconceived box from week-to-week, year-to-year regardless of the players they have available. Maybe that works at fOSU or Texas where you just reload with your pick of the litter every year, but at IOWA it clearly doesn’t.

Fuck it, I am so frustrated………………..

That check down to ARob (which he fortunately dropped) was perplexing. If he catches it, the clock runs out before we run another play. But he has been struggling much more on the deep ball this year and Stanzi just hasn’t had it to bring every game this year. While the defense hasn’t shown up at the end of games, those games should have never been in question if Stanzi and the rest of the offense had been on their games (see jNW, Indiana, Wisconsin, UM, and UA).

On the one hand, I want to agree with you.

On the other hand, A-Rob has just enough game-breaking ability to possibly turn a short pass into a long gain to a sideline. While an FB might be a better blocking option in the backfield, Morse can’t release and move as easy. It really depends on if the other team will send more than 4.

-- Judge Smails

by WaterlooChazz on Nov 13, 2010 9:11 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe.

If ARob is headed to the sideline, or up the sideline (the wheel route thing Marshall Faulk used to run), I would be OK with it. But he essentially ran a 4-yard hook. we are at the 50. But he was going to get tackled in the middle of the field by two guys, time was going to run out, and we were going to lose three games this year where we had the ball with a chance to tie or win and didn’t get a shot at the end zone in any of them.

At that point in the game, you have to take risks down field. Hell, run a hook and ladder with ARob. I think that throwing down field is less risky than throwing a four yard pass and hoping your back can make a bunch of people miss heading toward the sideline.

by Ratface McDougal on Nov 13, 2010 9:19 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, not a great route.

But I think they want him to block first if needed, and then release. And by the time he does all that, he can only run about 5 to 10 yards and look for the ball before the pocket closes in and Ricky has to throw it.

Plus, I think A-Rob is the final option, and the defenses (who know we are throwing it) are just doing a good job of covering the WRs and Reisner.

I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.

-- Judge Smails

by WaterlooChazz on Nov 13, 2010 9:30 PM CST up reply actions

Sure, I just think at that point in the game

you are better off to throw it away, rather than risk having the clock run out. The four to six yard gain is not worth the risk of having the game end without even a shot to the endzone.

by Ratface McDougal on Nov 13, 2010 9:33 PM CST up reply actions

by Ratface McDougal on Nov 13, 2010 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

Stanzi has been checking down a lot this year

Part of his new-found accuracy and mistakelessness (made up word alert) has been a tendency to check-down to the safe throw. More often than not, this is for the best; but on a depressing frequency, this has meant short throws that have no hope of going for big gains when we’re behind the sticks. I don’t know what the answer is, but a dump-down pass on 3rd-15 with little time left is not the answer.

I'm sad to see people blaming the offense

we gave up a 91 yard and 85 yard drive inside the 10:56 minute mark with a 10-point lead and it is the offense that is to blame? The two drives took 24 PLAYS! So there were a lot of chances for defense to make “plays”.

I think Stanzi’s INT was a mistake he did not need to make, but it was 2nd and 11 and he tried to make a play. It was tthe kind of agression everyone begs for around here. But i realize the offense, and the QB in particular, always takes the blame. But our problems have not been the offense this year.

We had a 4th quarter lead in the two BT losses and could not hold them. I blame in-game coaching decisions and a failure of defensive playmaking in both games. Wisky and jNU went on death marches of many plays to win these two games. The opportunities were there to stop them. Multiple 4th down plays in Wisky final drive and jNU converted a 2nd and 19 on their penultimate drive, after which we did not force another 3rd down that whole drive.

We just got whipped when the game was on the line by their offense against our vaunted defense.

If we actually have the type of talent that most of think we do...

on offense (a good-to-great QB, a good RB, one of the best WRs ever to play at Iowa, another good WR, and a good TE), then we would hope to score more than 6 offensive points against IU and 12 offensive points against NW (yes, I deducted Meyer’s kicking points).

IU and NW are not exactly fearsome defenses. NW has allowed the opponent to score more than 20 points in all but four games this year. Those 4 games were Illinois State, Rice, IU, and us.

IU has allowed all but two opponents to score 20 points or more. The 2 that did not were Towson and us.

Yes, the weather slowed us down some today. And certainly, NW gears up to play us. But that doesn’t really change the fact that our offensive talent has played way worse than most people expect in the last two weeks.

Yes, the defense looked bad at times today, especially with Persa running all over the place and throwing for 300 yards.

But, I think we should be able to expect 21 points from this set of offensive players against middling-to-weak Big Ten teams. I still love Ricky, but today is on the offense (3 points in the first half?)

Hyde has done a decent (not great) job this year, but I’d almost “go Auburn” and pay Spievey $150k to have him around this year.

But after last season if anyone had told me that this year Stanzi would only have thrown four picks after 10 games I would have been elated. Really, only two of them have been significant, and the first wasn’t even completely his fault.

Decent, for the most part.

NW somehow managed to run on us a bit, and absolutely nothing went well against Iowa in any phase of the game (except maybe our punter), but we managed to shut down Wisconsin reasonably well, at least as much as it’s possible to shut down Wisconsin.

Every time we’ve been any good, the game’s been in EL. Except for two years ago, but Penn State was a great team that year and we were just good.

I’m nervous about it, but for the moment I get the feeling the offensive renaissance under McGloin was more a “hey, we’re playing two of the worst pass defenses in the league” than anything else.

Reaons Why I Hate Northwestern

I thought I would get over losing to these guys again but I haven’t, and it is seeming to piss me off more and more. I hate losing to a team that can’t even fill its stadium, even when they are good. Evidently there aren’t enough Northwestern fans and alums in the town of Chicago to fill the 49,000 seats at Ryan Field.

And the whole bit about Nortwestern being “SUCH a good school” that they are somehow a little bit “above” athletics (but try to win anyway) and the chant “we don’t care about our losses because someday we’ll be your bosses”. ..look at the rankings for Medicine, Business, Law, and Engineering and you will find Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin right there with them, so they are no better than any other Big Ten school.

They have no tradition other than pretentiousness, their colors are ugly, they have a dreary stadium by the lake, and what fans and alums they do have don’t care enough to come and watch them play, even at home. Now that’s a Big Ten team that I would like to see succeed and represent the conference in a bowl. Barf.

“The biggest problem I see with Iowa if I was looking to defend them…they don’t have enough speed to really stretch the entire field. Consequently most of their passes are within 10-12 yards and they don’t threaten anybody deep.”

He’s old, senial and wrong, but I like making fun of him. Here’s what he should of said in my opinion:
Iowa plays up for big games and finds a way to play down to bad teams. Iowa has no killer instinct to close out games. The coaches are some of the best in the Big Ten and the team has been one of the most consistent in the nation for the past 10 years or so. Being consistent can hurt you in football though if it means you are predictable and Iowa has proven it. As is becomming the norm, Hawk fans are again all wondering how they could “bend but don’t break” themselves to another loss. Iowa could have been something special this year, but a lack of focus and some poor plays at key times and pathetic special teams have relegated them to another respectable but not great season.

In my view, our coaches are what take our 2 and 3 star recruits and put them in the NFL. The coaches keep us towards the top of the Big Ten every year and have put us in the National discussions very few teams are fortunate enough to be in. They deserve a lot of credit and to call for their heads is ignorant. I am proud to have them and of the job they do. BUT there are a couple things that need to be adjusted and it’s amazing they don’t adjust these obvious things that hurt us every year. Giving unlimited free 5 yard passes to anyone willing to take them needs to end. Not keeping the hammer down and playing too conservative with a lead needs to end. For jebushchrist’s sake, please practice some of those late game clock management scenarios and be prepared! It’s embarrassing how clueless they’ve looked this year in those fundamental situations. Overall, the coaches do a great job, please just make these adjustments and we can get to the next level one of these years. Maybe 2012? I hate to see potential like this wasted over a few small things and I don’t want this feeling again next year and the next year, etc.

Sorry for the long rant. Thanks again for the fun week of posts and giving me a chance to vent here. On the bright side it was funny to see jNW rush the field with all 45 of their fans.

We should put in two or three...

new plays per week, perhaps plays that we could easily use twice if we reverse their orientation (I didn’t just want to say “reverse them”).

We need to find some ways to get DJK, and ARob, and maybe some of the younger receivers the ball without one or two guys right there to clobber them. I’m not sure exactly what those plays are.

And while the special teams made no big mistakes today, they didn’t contribute a darn thing either (0 yards on kickoff returns, and -1 on punts). Yes, that was smart to not try returning while it was raining, and I’m sure Sandeman’s absence played into it also, but we must have a little something from this phase of the game.

Very typical of our kind of luck with NW...

….that our star QB gets hurt in the first half of a close game—that we are ahead in at the time—but theirs gets hurt on the LAST fucking play that guts us to basically win the game for them.

Not the second to last play. Not in the late 4th qtr, I’m talking the TOUCHDOWN play.

Imagine if that pass is incomplete, Demos makes the FG, and we go to OT—without Persa.

Nope! Not gonna happen to the Hawks. The Hawks get nothing and like it! By God, if the NW star QB is going to get hurt it’s going to be on the TD pass that wins the game.

Of course, watch NW tank the rest of their season, just to reduce our strength of schedule, with Persa hurt.

Par for the “jNW” course for us Hawks, though.

I was at the game and the weather didn't do us any favors

Compounding our lack of execution….1st and 4th Quarter we were driving into the wind—it was nasty. I’m not positive, but I don’t think either team scored going that direction. Stanzi threw two long passes going into that wind—the first was off target and sailed right at a JNU secondary but he didn’t come up with it but Stanzi gave them another chance and they picked it.

So when we change direction 2nd quarter and get the killer wind at our back it starts pouring rain. Like, Noah and the Ark pouring. Those early penalties killed us too, both the ones we committed and all the crazy holding that WASN’T called against our defense.

Yeah, I mean that's clearly a problem, but leaving guys a 10-yard cushion

when there is no way they can run past you is a problem. Particularly against a 73% passer. They could have simply watched tape from last week, called the exact same plays, and won.

Perhaps my best years are gone... but I wouldn't want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn't want them back.

by jebushchrist on Nov 13, 2010 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

Two problems I've seen since, oh, about 2005:

One is that we KNOW they’re likely to pass, yet we don’t have a nickel back in much at all. And when they run, it’s usually the QB anyway.

Two is that we lay so far off the receiver, that we’re basically conceding 5-8 yards on first down. If this were run-plays we’re talking about, people would say we’re CRAZY to concede 5-8 yards on first down. I say you can’t concede that much either from runs or passes. With a QB like Persa, hitting 75+% of his passes, that’s a losing strategy.

We need to watch tape of how OTHER teams beat NW—was shocked to hear they’re only 3-3 in the Big Ten now—and do what THEY do, not what WE do!

It’s no coincidence that we play pro-style Wisky teams tough, and get beat by NW all the time. Why we don’t adjust is the only mystery to me.

Which, when playing teams like NW, executes only us.

On offense, my question is this:

Where were the screen passes? PSU killed the ‘Cats with screens, I recall. Why so many long passes? Slants and passes to the TE’s down the seam and on the sideline are our bread and butter this season. Ricky hasn’t been as accurate with the deep ball, for whatever reason.

When we need 6, we throw 25 yard passes. When we need 20, we throw for 8. I think some of this is Stanzi, but our lack of screens—admittedly, I am addicted to screen passes—has to fall on KO or KF.

"Apparently, riding Joe Paterno like a small horse is FROWNED UPON IN THIS ESTABLISHMENT!"

by The Director on Nov 13, 2010 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

With a wet field...

it is tough for O-Linemen to get out in front of screen passes and stay on their feet.

That can also affect us in pass coverage: the refs were calling nothing. So, if a WR can push off of our CBs with a sloppy field underneath, you could be talking TDs. The cushion makes a tad bit of sense. But it does get tired after we fans see it so often.

He apparently still thinks if the players execute, we'll win

Most teams can’t do what Wisky and NWU did. They don’t have the patience and they’ll make a mistake, a la Cousins a couple of weeks ago.

But NWU is perfectly fine taking 5 yards at a time, and that O-Line for Wisky is great.

Our D last year got a number of TOs, and the statheads will tell you that TOs are mostly luck and tend to average out. Sash and Greenwood haven’t had nearly as many INT this year. I don’t know if offenses are more aware of them, if they are having to play closer to the line because of the youth of the backers or what.

Maybe it is the ultimate accountability.

While I’m sure the Iowa players spend plenty of time lifting weights, and at least some time watching film, Ferentz also isn’t going to kiss their butts and tell them that every loss is the coaching staff’s fault.

Maybe these guys (especially the younger ones) start watching more film and lift a ton of weights from here until next September. Maybe the older players come out next week and give some super-human effort to beat OSU.

Let’s face it. Northwestern has a decent football team, and our coaches need to get us readjusted vs. them as they’ve done with Iowa State. We need to take this game seriously, and we didn’t (as we almost didn’t Indiana either). It looks like we are sinking back into our old pattern of blowing close games that we reversed with PSU 2008.

There is simply nothing meaningful left for this team to accomplish. They had a number of goals at the beginning of the season, and they accomplished none of them. This will be the real test of Iowa fans and bowls, because if they can get any meaningful number of fans to a means-nothing bowl game, then they might as well go to Detroit from now on. I am not at practice each week

But Ferentz doesn’t seem like the kind of guy that changes his approach week to week based on the quality of the opponent. My bet would be that the approach from him is the game this week is the most important game of the season. The problem is a stubborn refusal to change the defense when it has been shown again and again that NWU will beat that system.

Now I don’t know if there is a lack of player leadership on this team. I remember reading some articles about how Bob Sanders changed the culture at Iowa, and it seems Ferentz really relies on players like Sanders for the emotional, fire’em up sort of stuff. I would have guessed with AC and Stanzi this would not be a problem, but this team has come out inexcusably flat in three games this year.

understandable

but disagree…

I have always been a Hawkeye fan. Last year, I just fell in love, again, with the Iowa football team. Madly, mancrushingly in love with the effort of this team. The reason was… they totally over-achieved. It was a ton of fun.

This is the same team as last year (well kinda y’know). I think it is inaccurate to say that this year’s performance is poor. I think the hype this year… was just hype. It’s just not the constant over-achievement that last year was, and therefore not nearly as fun. For this team to have the same success as last year was truly a long-shot.

I can’t think back two weeks ago against MSU, and give up on this year’s team. We’re out of race for a major bowl… yes… but there still might be some fun left in this team (thinking OSU next week).

Eh they may beat us

But their style is not nearly the problem for our D that NWU is. Pryor is not accurate enough to hit those 5 yard slants at a 78% clip. However, needing our LBs to make plays as he gallops around the corner……

gulp.

Every time I see him on TV, he always seems positive towards his players even when they mess up and just seems thrilled to be there.

Same here.

I haven’t seen him even act interested in other, bigger jobs, either. Certainly, Colorado has a nearly 0% shot to get him since they just canned his former boss. I’m not sure what other program could actually pry him.

If the geography weren’t so wildly different, I’d like to see Penn State or Michigan bring him in. It might be bad for Iowa, but it would be cool to see what he could do with a real stadium/recruiting budget/fanbase.

If I were the Minnesota AD, I’d offer Peterson about $4 million per year.

Not posted in a while, but...

My heart hurts after today. I was in Boulder for CU-Iowa State (I go to grad school at CU, but my heart is still in Iowa City) when the Iowa game went final. I watched all but about the last six minutes before I headed to Folsom, and we were still winning when I left. When I refreshed my phone and saw that we lost, I could barely see and my head was spinning. To make it worse, I was there with one of those guys who loves to trash-talk his friends’ teams for no reason, so he was giddy for the rest of the game. Yea, a CU fan, despite having attended CU during the most miserable stretch their program has seen in decades, was trash-talking a freaking Northwestern victory. It was brutal, but thankfully I kept mostly cool. Anyway, since this is the venting thread, and that really, really sucked today, I had to get it out somewhere.

Go Hawks! Believe.

And I’m sad to hear that you are forced to watch Colorado football for the last year or two.

I have a cousin who is a TA/grad student at CU. He is from western Iowa, and not the biggest sports fan in history, but I still wish he had better football to enjoy.

Yea, it’s certainly a bit of a change. The stadium today was probably 3/4 full and the fans in the student section are just awful. Of course, as you alluded to, the quality (or lack thereof) of CU’s football has probably not helped any. But hearing an 18 year-old who knows nothing about CU football screaming obscenities about how he could call a better game because of his Madden skills is embarrassing. But I guess bad college football is better than none. I rep my Hawkeyes regardless.

And one other thing.

I love Clayborn and the D-Line as much as anyone else but this is getting pathetic with all the little “breathers” at key points in the games. Come on! I’ve watched a ton of college football this year while stuck in Oklahoma with nothing better to do. I haven’t seen any other teams that “rest” their star players at key points of games like we do. It’s football. You get a break every 15 seconds or so anyway between plays and then you get all the TV timeouts and team timeouts on top of that. Is our cardio training really that bad? WTF? Unless our best guys are hurt, I don’t want to see them on the sideline watching the key plays. If Jared from Subway can run a marathon, I would think our young NFL-bound linemen can play for 5 minutes straight without a “breather”. Suck it up!

love it or leave it.

Here is a question that nobody here will be able to answer...

and it will probably start too much dumb reckless speculation, but whatever.

Do you think Clayborn and others smoke weed much or at all? I probably can’t blame all of our conditioning issues on it, but today’s repeated rest-stops did make me wonder a bit.

by WaterlooChazz on Nov 14, 2010 12:21 AM CST up reply actions

speculative shmeculative

I doubt that’s the problem… weed is the answer… bronchiodialator BABY!

Those lineman are conditioned for short bursts of extreme power, with substantial rest between bursts. They had to deal with a “hurry-up-no-huddle” offense all game… and couldn’t get off the field. There were some horrendously long (down laden) drives.

I don’t remember which drive it was (one of the 4th quarter TD drives)… but NW averaged about 2.5 yards per down, for about 14 plays in a row. Against a hurry up offense… that’ll kick the crap out of any D lineman in college or pro ball.

by iowabeakster on Nov 14, 2010 12:54 AM CST up reply actions

major stat fail

It was Iowa’s failed last drive that averaged 2.5 y/d.

anyway… I don’t think the conditioning was suspect given the situation.

Not to go all science-y and shit

but running a marathon and running repeated sprints while pushing against people and changing direction are not the same things. At all. Like, really, at all.

Thank you Captain obvious.

For both the science lesson and missing the point.

If our linemen are “conditioned” to do short bursts of extreme power, then maybe they need to be conditioned to do a few more short bursts at a time before sitting on the sidelines. I don’t remember seeing stupid Knomdongongongokiokng Suh on the sidelines for Nebraska last year for “breathers”. Somehow all the other teams I watch on TV manage to keep their starters in for most of the games and certainly the key series’ at the end. If you think their conditioning is at the normal level for college D-Linemen, then you are the one smoking beakster’s weed bronchiodialator.

love it or leave it.

I'm ready to trun the page

on this season. I am loyal, so will follow this team the rest of the way, but with no passion. Stanzi never matured. The defense, which was supposed to be freaking awesome, is not as good as last year. The sight of “quite possibly the best defensive line in the nation”(not) sucking wind on the sidelines while the purple people cruised down the field was embarrassing. I will tune into basketball this afternoon and hopefully be impressed and enjoy it. I have a feeling Vandenberg is going to be a great one, but we shall see. I don’t think we should sack the coaching staff, but I hope some adjustments could take place. Most players get better in this system, except quarterback….why is that?

by docted on Nov 14, 2010 8:46 AM CST reply actions

In fairness to Stanzi...

he has gotten better in terms of stats. And he still is a great leader for the offense (perhaps with the exception of two minutes versus Wisconsin).

You can’t really pin the Arizona loss on him. While he had a bad last couple minutes against Wisky, his numbers were quite good for that game (no INTs). And if you want to pin the NW loss on him, that’s fine, but several commentors on here have been blaming the defense a bit more.

If the weather for the OSU game is fine (no rain/snow, and around 35 to 45 degrees), then I’d like to see our special teams let it all hang out and really make OSU think about what they are doing.

While I am certainly bummed about the NW loss, I am also hopeful about what Stanzi and DJK might have in store for an OSU program that never really showed them much attention. And I’d have to think that Clayborn, Ballard, Klug, Greenwood, Reisner, Vandervelde, Johnson, Hunter, Morse, Tarpinian, Sandeman, and Donohue all want to go out in their last game at Kinnick and leave it all on the field.

Ricky

I agree with most of what you said here. Yes, his interceptions are down. Many times, however, his passes continue to sail away over receiver’s heads-like the entire Indiana game until the last drive. My main complaint is consistency and end of game clock management. He has a deer-in-the-headlights look about him as he comes to the line at the end of games when they are driving. I thought he would be calm and in control this year in those situations.

I think they figured out our weakness, because every game i have to sit and watch them pass to a wide open guy for 5 yards. no long passes, not real running from jNW, even the QB was contained relatively well after a while. they 5 yard passed us to death the whole damn game, just like everyone else has. that and the rediculiously bad timing of some penalties. felt like every time the offense did somethin good it was pulled back.

Well, here's something to think about:

If Iowa wins out and Wisconsin loses to UM (wouldn’t be all that surprising, all things considered) and MSU loses to PSU (again, same thing), that would give us a 4-way tie for the conference. Although it would take a second Badger loss to jNW (without Persa) to send us to the Rose Bowl.

The biggest problem with this projection, Iowa has to beat OSU first. All three of those teams face their own personal demon in the next few weeks. Wisconsin gets UM, Iowa gets OSU, and MSU gets PSU. If only OSU was playing USC or an SEC team not named Kentucky or Vandy in the next two weeks.

On two separate occasions I saw them both on the sidelines on a 3rd and 1. Our “Big Stars” aren’t conditioned. I don’t know who is to blame, but with the kind of shape they are in, if we played against a team like Oregon they would be out half the game. We need to pull our shit together.
