Not having seen freshman basketball player Melsahn Basabe play yet (thanks for lying to us, BTN), I'm still intrigued enough to have a mancrush on him. (That term seems even creepier to me, since I'm old enough to be his dad.) But as another poster on BHGP suggested, he probably could use a good nickname.
First and foremost, according to the Iowa basketball media guide, his last name is pronounced buh-SAH-bee.
Here are some nickname suggestions, and I apologize if they've already been brought up elsewhere on BHGP:Mr. Mel — A play on his formal Japanese-sounding first name, Mel-san, translated back into English.
Scary or Scary Spice — Mel B. Please don't make me explain that any further or my balls will shrivel up and fall off.
Japanese Horseradish — Technically, a nickname shouldn't be longer than the person's actual name. So maybe we could just go with Wasabi here. Or we could shorten this nickname to Horseradish or Radish.
Haw-Haw — Must be said as if you were The Simpsons character Nelson Muntz. Yeah, I'm reaching.
Malaysian Bazaar — My personal favorite. This was a suggestion my computer's spellchecker came up with for his name.
OK, so there you have it. My contribution. Please to improve upon.
