Hey everyone, Cornshoe here. I just returned from Miami and the Orange Bowl and of course the first thing I did was to sit down and read BHGP for the past hour (including ALL of the game thread posts) to get caught up on everything. Here are thoughts, comments and a couple of pictures from the trip.
1) Iowa fans out-numbered Tech fans by a wide margin.
In fact, there were several sections of the stadium which had large tarps over the seats in the upper deck which were not in use. But even around town on Monday, you were pretty much guaranteed that you would spot someone in black and gold.
2) The (few) Georgia Tech fans encountered were quite pleasant.
I know the fur had been flying between us and the fellas over at Rumble Seat, but all the Tech fans I talked to were cautiously optomistic before the game and extremely gracious in defeat following.
3) While at the game, it never felt like we weren't in total control.
I understood the anxiety which was prevailant on the game threads from watching on TV, but sitting in the stands, you always had the feeling that the defense was going to keep shutting them down.
4) Everyone MUST attend an Iowa bowl game in their life.
Tailgating before Iowa games is fun. Tailgating for the Bowl game is Fun x 100.
This is what Fun x 100 looks like.
5) Waiting for the team to show up and cheer them into the stadium is awesome.
Not only did I get to talk with Pat Angerer's dad while waiting for the team to arrive (instead of going directly into the stadium, Pat came over, found his dad and gave him a pre-game hug, it was pretty cool.) I also got to have my picture taken with Ed Podolak.
This is going up right next to the photo of me and Hawkeye State.
6) Giving credit where credit is due.
After the game (after having moved down to the front row so I could cheer even louder) I saw Ken O'Keefe standing in the end zone. When he looked up into the stands, I told him, "Great job!" But he just shook his head at me and pointed to Norm Parker who was nearby.
7) Finally, and frankly, most importantly....
IT'S GREAT TO BE A HAWKEYE!!!!!
Let's do this again next year in say, Pasadena? (Or perhaps even Glendale!)
