Orange Bowl Prediction Thread: This One's For All The Oranges

It's money time, chockos! Get your predictions in here.

OPS: 34-21, Georgia Tech (sorry.)

HS: 31-20, Iowa

Ross: 27-17, Iowa

HFMR: 27-16, Iowa

StoopsMyAss: 27-14, Iowa

I notice a theme amongst my colleagues (especially the last three). You guys really don't think Georgia Tech will move the ball on Iowa? Um, really?

Anyway, here's where you all leave your predictions. Winner wins... nothing probably. Nothing but bragging rights, pride, and everything else that requires none of our time and/or money.

87-10 Iowa. Booya.

Also, is Iowa wearing their black jerseys since GA Tech is wearing white? That would be sweetness.

I forget

When you win the Orange Bowl, do you pick up the entire trophy or just pick out an orange in celebration?

The Orange Bowl, it’s trophy is what it is.

Do you get to eat the oranges?

1 Point safety

happened in a Texas game. It happens if the defense blocks a PAT, then tries to return it. They have to run out of the end zone with the ball but then run back into it. The offense then tackles them in the end zone for a one point safety. Confusing as Hell but I remember it happening a couple years ago.

Tech wins 21-20.

You are a sad, strange little man, and you have my pity.

by BirdGT on Jan 5, 2010 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

Look back at the 2002 Purdue game.

Jovon Johnson returned a blocked kick 98 yards to the endzone and was promptly rewarded with two points for the effort.

by Abbas_Cincinnatus on Jan 5, 2010 2:34 PM CST up reply actions

I believe that was the Penn State game,

and it came on a PAT. In the Purdue game, he returned a blocked field goal for a TD right before halftime.

On a side note, it’s good to see the resident Negative Nancy picking against his team. Iowa hasn’t given up 30 points to anyone in two years, and GT is going to score 34?

It's exactly why

In the Michigan State game, we had to line up, snap the ball, and kneel down, after scoring a touchdown that put us ahead by 2 as the clock expired.

If we’d tried to kick it, and they blocked it and returned it, they’d have tied the game. If we’d been up by 3, the game would have ended right there.

Tied 24-24 up until the 4:45 mark, the TMFS picks one and returns it to the Iowa 45 and SDS methodically moves the ball to the GT 16 with 0:03 left on the clock and Murray kicks a GW Field Goal while he thinks back to this day:

I don't believe in predicting scores.

Because I’m a pretentious dickbag. But really, I’m superstitious about jinxing and what not. We all know we this team needs to do to win so here’s a semi-prediction if everything happens correctly. If Iowa…

  • maintains gap presence and assignments…
  • sheds blocks on stretches and counters to the outside…
  • prevents Demaryius Thomas from large gains and subsequently forces GT to move the ball in the exact way they expect them to…
  • forces Nesbitt into making poor reads and decisions…
  • takes care of the football on offense (DUH)…
  • establishes the running game, opening up the passing game and allowing quick scores…
  • which in turn will keep GT’s offense on the field, allowing the disciplined and extremely well conditioned Hawkeyes D to wear them down…
  • doesn’t lose points because of missed chip shots by Murray…

… Iowa wins this game. Not all of these have to happen of course, but most are required in order for a decisive Iowa victory.

34-17 Iowa

The fighting Stanzi’s are going to start off slow and hang on (down a TD at the half) until midway through the third quarter when they begin to wrangle the GT offense and shred the GT defense.

Once the Iowa players get used to the wacky GT offense, there’s going to be a lot of short sputtered drives by GT that results in good field position for Stanzi. I bet Moeaki gets 2 TD’s and 120 yards, because ACC defensive coordinators have never seen a tight end before.

27 - 19 Iowa

But it won’t be as close as the score would indicate. Much like OSU/Oregon, we’re going to be much bigger and more physical. They’ll move the ball, and kick a lot of field goals, then tack on a meaningless touchdown at the end, but Iowa’s D will dominate for vast stretches of the game. I’m thinking very very similar to Wisconsin/Miami.

I'm sorry OPS

But I re-read your intro to this, and I hear where you’re coming from — do people really think Iowa will keep the most potent rushing offense off the scoreboard? Or hold them to 16 points? Maybe, but that’s not likely to happen.

Similarly, do you truly believe GT can put up 34 on this defense? Personally, I don’t know if there’s an offense in the country that could do that, let alone one which is as one-dimensional as GT’s.

I see something in the middle somewhere, with Iowa doing just enough to pull out a win. End of the day, Iowa went 10-2 in a MUCH harder slate than GT did. We’ll go with 28-24, Iowa.

I temper that with

I know the back-ups at the O-line spots, the TE spot, and the LB spots are also very good.

30-28

Hawks. Final of 3 FGs booted with under 5 minutes remaining to seal the deal. Ferentz puts the stamp on the big FU from the BXI to the world. Time to get drunk.

31 -10 Iowa

No turnover in the first quarter and they will deliver a sweet victory to cap off a great fucking year.

That’s some cold weather in Miami by GT standards. I’m expecting the same sort of physical game Wiscy and PSU brought. 28 – 10 Iowa.

Lot’s of field goals and a decent amount of yards. Iowa wins in the last minute somehow and the entire country will go how the hell did that happen….
